Jordan, thanks, but can you show how to grip the paddle from not having it in your hand. That will step by step show how to place the handle in your hand.

Thanks Jordan. I always wondered what grip most top taking players use. I do use continental because it felt the most comfortable grip. Thank you! H

Suggest showing close up how to get into a continental grip....and into eastern through western variations ...before showing shot making on next video. Thanks!

Jordan, nice video as always. I have a question that I have asked several 3/5-5.0 Players and would like your feedback. During the game do you use or change grips to hit different types of shots? Cheers Vito

I've been playing a year or two, come from tennis and use a semi-western on my forehand as well as backhand top spin stroke. I don't like brushing up on the ball so much and would like to hit it flatter. On my backhand, I drop my shoulder hitting up on the ball and it's usually a bit weak. I use a continental or eastern at the net and have trouble pronating my hand to hit a good forehand volley often hitting the ball ball to the left side (I'm right handed) and catching it too deep on my body. I'm going to start trying to use one grip and hit both ground strokes and volleys with it. Where I play, no one is interested in drilling so I'll have to try it in the heat of the battle which won't be fun. Do you have any videos for the forehand groundstroke with this grip? And you said you'll have a video for when you go away from the continental. Is it published yet?

@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
Hey Keith, stay tuned. We should have it out sometime this month. In the meantime here’s my recommendation: At the net when battling in fast exchanges, stay continental. Also, anytime your on the defense, stay continental so that you can hit forehands and backhands effectively. Anytime I’m trying to impart a lot of topspin on the ball I will change my grip to an eastern forehand for forehands, and to an eastern backhand for backhands. This is only when I have the time to switch grips. Also, I have to make sure to be quick to change it back to continental right after I hit that shot, just in case I need to defend.

I would generally not recommend the semi western or western grip.

Mentally I understand the advantage but many, many years of tennis (Eastern grip) keep the muscle memory kicking in. Maybe someday I will drill it into my game. When I help a brand new player learn the game I do ask if they have a tennis or other paddle/racquet sport background.
@terryjordan7276
@terryjordan7276 2 года назад
Eastern is fine and maybe better especially at net on forehands. In tennis you should have been using a continental for your serve and at net unless you were a 3.5 or lower.
@eh4236
@eh4236 2 года назад
@@terryjordan7276 I totally agree. I enjoy your videos. I come from 35+ years of tennis. Can no longer play tennis because of injuries. My muscle memory from tennis is strong is and is quite helpful to a relatively quick transition to PB. I have played PB 10 months. In tennis as in PB, I used eastern forehand/eastern background on groundstrokes. In PB, I use that grip for drives from the baseline. Like in tennis, I use the continental grip on serves, overheads, dinking, volleys. On windy days, I use the eastern grip off both sides, to impart topspin or slice to help keep the ball in the court.

Sooo, if one of the advantages of an Eastern/semi-Western grip is to impart more topspin, why not use it regularly on the serve? Thanks!

Continental is the closest you can get. If they target your hitting side armpit that’s tough but still make-able if you’re quick.

Can you revisit this subject (grip). I feel like with the new Raw Carbon Fiber paddles (especially these new 2nd gen thermoformed RCF) that a lot of high level players and pros are moving to an Eastern grip... even at the NVZ. Instead of holding the paddle in a traditional "ready position... they are holding it lower for a wrist flick volley return, rather than a swinging volley return. John Cincola's comments @ 10:50 are interesting ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--tCvbHktXMc.html One of my questions for you, is are you still doing a lot of grip switching... do Pro's do a lot of grip switching. Your older videos seem to indicate that you did. But I feel like people are using more wrist deflection/angling to compensate and stick with one grip (these days eastern over continental)...but hey, what do I know??! lol. Thanks.
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball Год назад
There is more of a move to Eastern on the forehand now and continental is taking a back seat, for sure. There is still grip switching, especially with respect to a forehand vs. a backhand. On the same side (only forehand or only backhand), there is still slight changes happening all the time. Primarily, there is less switching when playing from up at the NVZ line and yes, the more you can stay in one grip or in a narrow range on your grip and still be effective with all your shots, the better.

I find that I can't use the paddle without my index finger being on it. It's like I don't have stability...any good grip to "unlearn" this? And is having a finger on the paddle even a bad thing?
@c_m_b_3110
@c_m_b_3110 3 года назад
Hey, I’m a table tennis player as well as pickleball and tennis, and it seems you are holding like a shake-hand grip in table tennis. While it is not a bad grip, it is unorthodox and I don’t know if it’s absolutely necessary to lose it, but having some tennis experience does help to get more comfortable with a continental grip.
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
Yes Zach, the grip that you are talking about is ok, but it’s not the best all around grip for pickleball. The only thing I would suggest is forcing yourself to use the continental grip, and practice with that.
@BL-nice
@BL-nice 3 года назад
That grip is fine and many people choke up high on the handle for extra support. They have paddles with shorter handles designed for that type of grip. It's a solid grip if you know how to use it properly.
@gabeanderson8816
@gabeanderson8816 3 года назад
Hey Zach, it’s a good grip, but it comes with a big risk. Namely, tendonitis in your elbow. I used to keep a finger up and what got me to stop was getting tennis elbow so bad that I couldn’t take my phone out of my pocket. Like Jordan says, you just have to force yourself to keep the finger down. It’s hard to play at your normal skill level with a grip change, so I suggest you start drilling with the finger down. Dinks, then drops, then serves/returns/ground strokes, and finally volleys and attacks, and overheads. Go through the progression a couple times a week for a few weeks, and then make a commitment to leave it down forever.
@BL-nice
@BL-nice 3 года назад
@Jeff Bartlett Yup the shakehand grip provides support and stability for people with weak hands and wrists plus provides stability forehand and backhand for lack of paddle mass. Keep in mind I'm referring to the shakehand grip and not the Eastern Forehand with the finger on the face of paddle that's a really bad grip style. The shakehand grip is a continental grip chocked up high on paddle.
