So many of my friends had this question of why and how we decided to move back to India from the US. A few I got to talk to, others I didn't get a chance to talk to, and that's why, HERE I AM with a video of WHY WE DECIDED TO MOVE TO INDIA.
Initially, the above was the inspiration to work on this video, but later I thought why not extend it to people whom I might not even know, but who are on the verge of making the decision, or have even decided to move back, and want to hear someone else's story. Hence, I decided to not limit it to one video, but make a mini-series, to share our experience, making good use of the time in lockdown, and hopefully helping someone while doing it :-)
Hope you enjoy watching it.
P.S: I am new to youtube, so please excuse the rawness in setting up the frame, lighting, sound, editing, make up, thumbnail making. Phew!!! No one told me, it's going to be so difficult. BUT, I LOVE challenges, and being a one woman army, I am teaching myself ALL OF IT! You are very welcome to offer suggestions. Please leave them in the comments below. Ciao!

I returned to India as a US citizen after being abroad for 20 odd years. One thing I would recommend is that don't judge others, make your own decisions. One place is not better than the other. It all depends on multiple factors and where you are in life, what is your priority etc. Above all, have courage to take decisions. Don't sit on the fence for too long otherwise, life will pass by. I moved back primarily to spend more time with parents and experience India's rich spiritual traditions. It's so worth it. Jahan bhi raho, khush raho....and don't compare. You are unique and you need to make your own decisions.

Can it be called "returning" or just making the best of all the worlds one can get ?? Atleast one can appreciate you revealed you are not an Indian. Others like this video maker and several in comments are creating a false sense (i say fooling) of "returning" without telling if they surrendered GC and citizenship or not. Hiding this can only be for one obvious reason, otherwise they would have shown Indian passport from a roof top.

My cousin and her husband moved back to India from the US and live in Goa. It will take brave people to move back to India, after living in a society which is so different. Indians have too many children and their culture does not change much wherever they go. It is about money. Most Indians who manage to immigrate have language, skills and money.

Your story is so much inspiring, leaving a settled career and lifestyle of 11 years and suddenly transition to different lifestyle. You need courage to do something like that. Hats Off to you. I also lived in US . But, I wasn't able to adjust myself there. After 2-3 months of moving in US, I started feeing lonely. I didn't had any friend and relatives there during my bad times and my health started deteriorating. One day I called my maa and said I am coming back to India. She was like happiest person on the earth. And, then after 6 month living in US I came back to India. For me life in US was good but not the life I wanted to live. Now I am really happy with my decision.

I can imagine the happiness of your mother when she heard that you are coming back.. Mostly it's the old parents who suffer the most when young children leave them for settling in Canada, australia, usa etc... In my area (Haryana and Punjab) people are crazy for leaving India to go to Canada, Australia .. It's so depressing to see their old parents left behind crying most of the times specially mothers when they miss their sons daughters... Even if parents go to foreign after 4-5 years most of them come back after spending 2-3 months most of them saying " Wahan mann nhi lagta" because there is no one to talk with them ... It's a kind of disguised slavery specially in Canada which noone talks ( I know these thinks because my brother is there )😔

Thanks for sharing and you presented the reasons for you to move back to India very well. I have to admire the bold decision you took rather than wavering. As a working woman, I have to admire that you are bringing up two children and thus you give importance to family values. Most married Indian Professionals are limiting to one child these days. Hindu TFR going down to 1.5 or lower shall adversely affect demographics like in China and Europe in a decade. I had health and career problems in my late 20's to 30's as I finished PhD only at age 34 and then children's births were delayed but we still have two children. We could not relocate to India as I settled down in life only by late 40's as I had additional burden to financially support my parents and siblings in India but we are able to bring up our children in USA with Hindu values and family values.

The comment section is filled with so much haters and critics like who the hell are these people to judge someone? Its her life. Leave her alone. If she wants to live in India great and not wanted to in USA it is her right and her life. I have many family members who live abroad. I know domestic help is not an issue for anyone. My uncle even purchased this huge property, yet he moved back because his mother died last year in February, he got into three brain surgeries, then lockdown in India happened and his dad has to move to his sister's place who herself had a newborn grandchild and let just say his father and his brother-in-law could not adjust under same roof. Look long story short his parents never wanted to move from India and for approximately twenty five years he stayed abroad now that their were family problems arising he moved back this year to India. I am saying that everyone has personal issues they don't want to share. Some people are happy to let their parents stay in elderly homes some don't.

Kudos to your family for this decision. I moved back to India after 13 yrs in US. You won't regret the move and you haven't mentioned the social issues of US. Second gen Indians ending up not married, late marriage, interracial marriage, too independent and getting lost, high divorce rate, step parenting etc.., our kids don't have to go through all that non sense. Think about these too if you want to move back to US. I believe Indian parents inadvertently pawned the future of their children for the sake of money and comfort in US. Many plans this way, coz it’s difficult to survive during old age, it’s difficult to drive during health emergency. Your kids won’t be around…. Difficult to manage your household in your 80s, moving snow, move your lawns, payment towards mortgages etc etc ( just to pay home tax people work in their old age in US) . list goes on. So few r smart enough to move back to home country so that they get to live life like a king n queen size. Coz they can afford all workers. 😂 Many hidden stuff which we never know. 😅 I worked, stayed here n got relatives who lived many years and they don’t want to move back but they know the reality of their old age. Still America is fantasy to so many. But as a women I feel our kids must grow in our country and learn our culture more than being behind money all the time. It’s the fact….

No domestic help in US. Extremely expensive medical treatment. No freedom to change employers or do own business. Sometimes, racial abuse, especially children in school. Folks file litigation on flimsy grounds. Too many folks carry personal weapons. Moving around without own vehicle is expensive. Vegetarian food not readily available in restaurants. House rent quite high. Loneliness. If you make reasonably good amount in India, life is very comfortable for family. More comfortable than even an American earning a million dollars an year, because even that American cannot afford to hire a full time chauffeur, cook, domestic help. In India, very common for reasonably well off families to have one or more domestic help. An Indian family earning 150,000 dollars yearly is likely to hire 3 or more full time domestic help.
@mulay1rv

Agree with you on some issues you’ve mentioned; but there are few other things to consider. As you’ve said: 1) Yes, there is no freedom to move jobs or start business on H1/L1 visas, but with GC, that is possible ! Yes, I understand the waiting time for India born citizens for GC though, technically impossible under the current system which sucks ! 2) India has its advantages like domestic help, but if you see closely, getting one also has become increasingly difficult or expensive too 3) Needless to mention, major Indian cities and physical infrastructure sucks, especially in Mumbai/ Thane area and mainly in monsoon. Air pollution is the major problem here. 4) Agree about the family bonding issues as she has mentioned, but there is no way to predict that kids will continue to maintain forever when they grow( even things in India like family values are bit declining). Madam, Please do not take this as an offence or like; my personal observation. 4) Again education in India ( as per current era) is fine till grade 12th; again rat race starts post that ! Yea , her kids can circumvent that since they are American by birth! Even good quality education from KG in India is an expensive thing 5) Other issues which matter most to me are corruption, filthy roads , unregulated traffic, hooligans etc. Certain things also exist in the US or other developed nations too; I’m not denying but too minuscule to consider.

"Chauffeur, cook, domestic help" is not a valid reason to move back to India. It just reveals how people want to keep people working in such roles and refuse to bring them out of such professions. How about learning to drive and make your own food so that the chauffeur and cook can get an education and come up in life??

Most things liked is, 1) Self discipline. 2) Cleanliness. 3) Respect to senior citizens. 4) Respect to pedestrian . 6) Everybody is living their own lives. No interference to anyone's personal life. 8) Very good support of Police. These are some of them. This is my personal opinion. See there are always two sides of every things. Hi Prerna, Thanks for your detailed video! I (26 Age) am also Maharashtrian Punekar who earns better salary here as a software engineer. Just married with slightly better together family income. We dont have plan for kids for next 2 years. I have an offer from Ireland and I am still thinking on it. I wont earn good money there in Ireland but would get a chance to explore abroad with work life balance. Plus point is Ireland gives PR after 2 years. I am thinking on decision, where I will stay for 3 years there in Ireland, if everything suits there I will take my parents or comeback after 3 years with PR in hand. Why I am considering PR of Ireland is because I strongly feel that future/schooling of kids is far better there than in India. I don't have very extended huge family with us here in India, where we celebrate festivals largely. Flights from Ireland to India are also faster than US. But parents in India are heavily dependent on me. What is your thought on this, I would like to know your opinion (based on experience) if you are ok to share? Is there any medium I can discuss with you?
