Moving to another country for educational or job purpose is a great deal that we look forward to but deciding to come back to your home country when the purpose is done is a critical choice that we all get stuck with. I have been at this situation too when I finally decided to come back to India after staying in US for almost 7 years. In this video, I'm talking about my personal reasons and the pros and cons. Came back to India from UK after 9 years, with two children under 5. Never regretted it. It is important to be financially stable.... that helps.

I was in England for my MBA IN 2011-2014.And then came back to india and started my own business which was doing amazing until my business partner looted 10 crores from me. I panicked and realized I'll never be able to make that money again. In 2019 moved to Canada as a permanent resident. It's been 3 years here and I realized recently that it took away more from me than it gave me. Finally made a decision to move back and am flying back on 11 January 2023. I'm not saying it's a bad country, it's my personal experience and I realized I cannot stay away from my family and India. Everything she's saying is true and real life experience. The countdown is on for me and am very excited. I would just suggest you guys to enjoy life, take it easy and stay where you will be happy. Thank you

It’s all personal choice, if you move back to India without any expectations you will be fine, if you start comparing selective things you can never be happy. It’s all mindset, happiness is the ultimate thing for anyone in the life, money doesn’t guarantee happiness.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts through this video. Me and my husband are doctors and we came to Canada to do a fellowship with our small baby who was 6 months old then. It’s been about a year and a half after working here and I don’t think I belong here. When someone asks me why we are not applying for PR in Canada as we can get it easily with in a year, I think it’s my priorities now. May be now I want to have more time with my family and more social support which is lacking in these countries. If I would have come 5 years back my priorities would be different that time. And I terribly miss India. We will be heading back to home by this year end. As rightly said home is where your heart is.

Great pointers, thank you so much. I would love to add, once you come back to India, give your self some time to settle down. Do not just panic at every little problem coming at you. It may take few months to a year to fully embrace life in India. Longer run it gets much better and fulfilling, trust me. Also another big drawback of living aboard for long is that your children starts to convert into west, completely lose ties with anything Indian, relationships, language, faith, culture, heritage, you name it. I've yet to find a 3rd or 4th generation immigrant who's still any Indian. Its like our people get so eager to migrates to foreign countries only to get their future generations converted, that's it, and that sucks. All you really need to gain from these countries is money, knowledge and experience, nothing more.

Same situation returned for good after 7 yrs last month. Can completely relate to what you are saying

I read many years ago that emigration means you become a stranger in 2 countries: the country you emigrate TO, and the country you emigrate FROM. Think about this BEFORE emigrating!

Without realising Indians study here with huge govt subsidies and then move to a foreign location spending lakhs of rupees. Then pay lakhs in taxes in that country, fight racism, takes years to settle down albeit loneliness. Better stay in your country and help in making it a better place

For a family deciding to move back,the only best time is when they are quite young ,under 6.i personally moved back when my child was 3.i never regretted.

Thank you for sharing your experience! Definitely contemplating it myself, after becoming a citizen a decade ago. It served it’s purpose for the time being but it somehow is losing it’s appeal. I saw myself becoming close minded, materialistic and individualistic and it’s been hard to relate to my family, to my culture over time. After my recent trip, I came to realize how truly free being in India is and I’m planning to move back😊 So excited to fall in love with India for the first time!

Apart from the fact whether you made a good or bad decision about leaving US, the most important thing impressed me about you is that you hold an independent opinion about yourself. What I mean by that is that fortunately your life is not influenced by marriage, kids, parents, our so-called Indian society, etc. You are so clear in your head that what you needs to do with your life and that's where we (as Indian) are affected by and confused about mostly. (and on top of that being a female in India is an another challenge you know what I mean)

After watching many videos on the 'return to india' topic, which seemed to be covered by only NRIs who returned to India after working in the US, I felt a bit irritated. The reason being, I am a single Indian aged 28 who has been studying in Copenhagen (denmark) since 2.5 years and now working as a waiter to sustain myself in the job search period. I am incredibly homesick and need the liberty of time to upskill myself, amongst other concerns of peak self-doubt levels and a massive load of indecisiveness due to a conflict between deciding for myself and to please others who's regard for other individuals increases depending on their superficial levels. And also my education and employable skillsets are mixed and mismatched (Computer Science + Audio Engineering specialization + Content Writing internships upto 2 years), which makes it much tougher to get a job here in Denmark. There are hardly any videos of Indian students living abroad in Scandinavia who returned home on their own personal choice. Thank you so much for this video and very gradually illustrating the pros and cons of your experience. Much needed. tagging myself as a 'failure' for returning to homegrounds after completing my masters here felt like a purely futile experience to have. I am considering returning home coming late August or September to reorient myself and get upgraded on homeground.

I spent 6 years in the US and I know what you mean :) Very balanced views. I really appreciate the emotional aspects you talked about. Some people are emotional and social, and the distance from my family got to me. I didn't face racism but something didn't feel right. My brother on the other hand didn't experience that to the same degree as I did. Sometimes I wonder if its gender related or personality related. Either ways, I loved my experience there but I knew it wasn't my home. :)

Hello mam i just came to Australia in the month of march to settle my life here with my husband and my daughter,but from the very next day when I landed here i was started thinking I cannot spend rest of my life here without my family and friends and i was still confused but today your video suddenly flash on my youtube and Now i am happy that i took the good decision as we have already booked our tickets to India , thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and opinions with all of us. I am also feeling very lonely here though we have lots of friends here but still i am suffering to feel the emotional connection with this country.

I applied to FIT newyork and got an admission in 2016, how ever i couldnt go due to some reasons but got opportunity to work out side of India. Now, when i look back, I am wondering what made me take that decision? I never thought of what would be my life after I graduate. Not a regular NRI and I don't have any wish to return home just yet or maybe ever. I don't live in the UK or USA though...I have lived and worked in different countries (not all of them were western countries). My child grew up in 5 different countries, goes to an international school with kids from 60 different countries, and feels at home in different cultures. His best friends are British and Colombian. A true third culture kid. He speaks his Indian mother tongue fluently at home, English with an accent, and Spanish. He plans to study in Europe after school and doesn't want to settle in India either. I find the quality of life to be much, much higher abroad and you get to be who you are. Yes, we miss our families back home but they visit and they understand and respect our choices. Not all NRIs go abroad just to make money (I am an educator, so definitely not in for the money) or work in IT:-) I love my life and I know I privileged to have lived in some amazing places and have met some amazing people along the way. Won't trade this life for anything. We are good here.

Many people join Big IT firms like Amazon, Google and take transfer to India. It helps them in 2 ways. First they have job. Second, their stocks will be vested in India according to USA package

HI, your videos are really informative and provides insights about one goes through the dilemma when living aboard life as Foreigner..!!! I have couple of questions related to same topic with an extension..! - In most cases its comes out like indians from US but however did you have any feedback or call from any indians living in germany or Europe and thinking about moving back to india ..? what were there challenges..? - secondly it would be great if you make videos on OCI card holders childrens education in india, its understood that OCI card holders children should pay more fees than indian citizens (for undergraduate....etc), if this is the case then only parents can have citizens and excempting children from giving up indian citizenship, in these cases will it make any sense to take any other citizenship..apart from having luxury of free visa travel across world..!!!

Awesome! Very well explained... I think it is always better to return back with a company transfer or home-country relocation, if possible. Even if you want to start your own venture back in India. Starting new ventures in India can takes an enormous amount of planning, execution & time - with many more obstacles to navigate. Systems and clearances here are not as streamlined or easy. Multiple review of plans & budget for your venture is very often required. Another very important decision to take is where you will stay after coming back. Would you move in with your parents? Would you move into an independent apartment in the same city as your parents? Or will it be a different city? Because at this age (between 25-30) you are reaching a stage in life where your need to finalise a location for life and will probably marry and settle down sooner than later. By this time after completing your education and after 3-4 years of professional work experience... you already know what career opportunities you will pursue. Third point, I feel is, if you are exiting US because your Visa has expired... then it makes sense to seek a transfer to Singapore or Dubai (3-4 hr flight from India) or even UK/Europe (7-8 hr flight from India) instead of coming back to India. But if you are NOT compelled to exit US... then Dubai or Singapre does not make sense! Then you are returning back to your roots as your primary motivator and only a return to India makes sense. Singapore or Dubai is neither here nor there!

My kids and wife have settled well, although i feel we should go back.. Worried also abt the NRI fees post 12th here in India and UK. Thnx again

This is a wonderful video for those grappling with this dilemma. We have stayed in US for 33 yrs now. My hubby is emotional, and kept struggling with this decision, but we ended up staying and now it seems v difficult to move back. I have always loved it here as I am more practical and less emotional. So, ultimately it depends on each individual.

hi Nisthaji, thanx so much for giving us such an informative & useful video!! looking forward to watching more such awesome videos!!👍 as u told, many students who belong to middle class take huge education loans in order to follow their dream of pursuing their studies abroad!! how will they repay their loans if they come back to India ? they won't get equal salary in India to repay the loan ; more so , if they have to start something on their own ; they can't take another loan which will be a huge burden on them ; how to manage this financial problem ?? by that time , they may have their family & kid also ; their parents would have become old & they have to support them also ; it's a very difficult decision to make & not possible for everybody ;😇

If you have children born o/seas, don't even think of moving back to India. Neither you, or your children, will ever belong there again. It s a harrowing choice for people who immigrate. They escape poverty, only to find themselves strangers in their new home forever.

Been in US for 22 years and worked for US GOVT took VRS and was back to India 3 years ago...Now I am enjoying warm summers and mild winter and able to define my day as I wish every day....In life I set limit to as there is NO LIMIT to earn money and enjoy materialistic life .and living a contend life with what I earned ....Note...In USA I went thru Downturns...Layoffs...Medical issues etc...Anyway enjoyed and experienced life during my Stay in USA ...Only problem felt is WINTER COLD WEATHER...Over here in INDIA I am enjoying life on the BEACH every day and enjoying SUNNY DAYS.....with Family Friends Relatives and help as and when required......

Hey Sirish, did you comeback with a retirement corpus and with a project plan? If somebody 39 years old(middle class guy, couple working in IT) and just not accumulated their corpus, no much complaints here, what is your suggestion? I have an option to move to US on H1B but hating the visa status issues, moving kids there and bringing back here. What is your suggestion as on 2023 situtaions in USA and India today.

It's a good decision to go back to your home country especially if the country gives you good opportunities to grow.

I'm definitely in that same state after staying here for 10 years now. I have always wanted to go back and have 2025 as the year when I have planned to move back but nowadays I feel like I should pack my bags by end of 2023 and sell all stuffs (home, car , land etc) I have with me here. One question that bothers me, how much money one should have (of course there is no upper limit but just as a rough number) to go back, settle, take a break and start fresh in there when that person has a 2 year young?

I came to the UK as a student year 2007, recession hit in 2008 and I lost my part time job, I was dead broke. But I hassled in the cold harsh weather, completed my studies, got a job, saved money, set-up a firm, sold the firm in 2021 and retired. It all happened in 13 years. UK is not for the weak, if you want to be successful here then you have to integrate with British community and also depends on your mindset. Your current situation does not determine your future but your thoughts will. I think I am the only person in the comment section that likes the UK. This is a beautiful country, fresh air (outside London ofcourse), pure water and non gmo food, excellent private healthcare, good transportation networks, best restaurants in the world, best social life, Europe is 45 minutes away, and more importantly great people to socialise with.

My son is an engineer and he he has done his MS in usa. He has filed his green card in 2015 in EB2 process now how many years he will have to wait for it?.

A point to mention is in US there is lot of racism and of course crime everywhere ; you made a good decision, where every you are you should feel happy.

I think it is possible to start a business while on H1B visa. And you said your company was willing to sponsor you for GC. Once you have a green card it is even easier to start your business without having to be in a job if your financials allowed

Great decision your's but ofcourse it does vary on some one's need. I do agree with your decision, when I have made a good bank balance, I can try some new venture at my motherland, after all living far away to USA for ever I will not like also. Once again it does depend on individual's need, accordingly decision to be taken.

People who have property in India can come back, but people who doesn’t have property in India started from zero at foreign countries ,can struggle in India, its better being at abroad, but if you want any medical treatments india is best, personally I would suggest, Jo bhai behen ne bahut struggle kiya hai financially, bahut saari problems dekhi hai india me, mat aana india me woh, yeah for tourism you can come anytime, but financially you will just struggle, jinke parents support karte hain , people who have higher education can do job anywhere in the world, unka toh chal jata hai, but Jo truck par hain usa me stores par hain or even doing freelancing, they can’t come back here , hardly they manage to make money for studying, india me kon truck pe rakhe ga, it’s better at usa, likh lo 2 Aadmi kabhi nahi aayenge vapis ek toh Gujarati aur dusra punjabi, bahut struggle dekha hai nahi ayenge 👀 vapis

I’m planning to move to India in the next 6 years. Currently, I hold an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) status as I obtained Canadian citizenship. Even though I spend most of the year, about 6-8 months, in India, I primarily maintain my Canadian passport to avoid the Permanent Residency (PR) renewal requirement, which necessitates spending 1000 days out of 5 years outside Canada. I earn my income in Canada and invest in agriculture to support my parents in India, even though I’m not making a significant profit from the farming venture. However, farming is a deep-rooted tradition in my family. My plan is to explore opportunities in California, work there for a while, and eventually relinquish my Canadian citizenship to return to Indian citizenship. Many people suggest that I could potentially earn more money in India. However, in practical terms, I believe that my current knowledge and skills may not yield as much income there, and the work environment might be more stressful than working in foreign countries.

My son is having green card, an iitian, did his phd in data science and machine learning from us,working in topmost us company,his wife also an iitian,did her ms in us doing very good job in us company,having two kids both us citizens by birth,six and two years old,doing very good there but wants to come back to India,very firmly planning for it,but we parents me and my wife are confused with their decision although they come to India regularly and we went there three times and spent good time with family. We are in dilemma please advise,thank.

I wish you could reach more people because I feel like people go to the US with the perception that it’s a utopia when in reality it’s almost the exact opposite. There is nothing wrong with studying abroad it’s just the idea that the education and country are going to provide an end all solution when in reality it’s not.

I attended a big university in LA for a masters in engineering program. I met my advisor once and told him "the professor teaches like crap, essentially he is facilitating stealing 10,000usd from me,". He replied back saying "dont talk about these things , i will help you". Please advise how i should proceed after this information.
