I've seen RU-vid’s "glow up diaries", "that girl", and "this is my _____ era" but I'm pretty sure those aren't what moms need for next year.

Husband just got me a kindle so I can redeem the time I'm spending nursing our newborn. Much better than endlessly scrolling Instagram to keep myself awake at 3am!

I got so much reading done in my years of nursing babies. I also downloaded the kindle app on my phone so I don't have to remember my kindle when it's 2am and the baby is screaming haha

I have to say that I call my home life " The Ministry of Interruptions" and this has strangely become more of a reality with grown children and grandchildren. I say it with genuine love of those who interrupt and my 'domestic monastery' and no sarcasm.

Reminds me of that C.S. Lewis quote that we often think our lives are being interrupted but those interruptions are our real lives.

It's a sneaky vice because it comes out of such a good thing: love of reading/learning. (I guess all vices are sneaky like that but books are life, you know?) Enjoy spending some time thinking of YOUR books. It's just as much a gift to you as it is for your kids!

This was the encouragement I needed to plan out my reading in a realistic way this year (have a 2 year old and a 1 year old). I really appreciate the content you put out, it has been deeply encouraging to me. You have spurred me on in my faith and desire to home educate. Thank you.

GIIIIRRLLL!!! My husband and I read Brave New World together over the summer, per your recommendation. We can’t even see a commercial without that yucky materialism pit in our stomachs! Especially those commercials for the cars that drive themselves! Can we not even be bothered to drive for ourselves anymore?!? So disturbing, but in an eye opening and necessary way. Anyway, I read it to be able to read Amusing Ourselves to Death, but currently still just sitting with the ideas in Brave New World 🤪

We used to use trains. A car centered world and materialism go hand in hand. Cars give a false sense of freedom because we can't buy houses, or work for ourselves, grow our own food, etc. It's essentially feeding the ego. Which is why America is so pro-car. Without our cars we are nothing.

This is why i like Well-Read Mom - I don't have to think about planning what to read, and they introduce me to plenty of new stuff that I would otherwise never read but have gotten plenty of benefit from. And because I pay for it, I'm more motivated to actually read the books - I have to show up prepared for meetings and get my money's worth!

I too have always been a jack-of-all-trades, and thought it was actually a weakness of mine until a few years ago. Now I lean into it and even encourage it in my children! Also - I’m swooning over your green cabinets and I don’t know if it was intentional, but I appreciated the slower pace of this video. My brain can only keep up with so many words per minute!

I painted those right before the school year started as my final project of the summer. Benjamin Moore, Palmer Green. And I'm glad the pacing was better! I'm a fast talker but I really am trying to slow down, per the comments!

Hello from Australia and an older Mum of grown children and a 5 year old grand daughter who we have been helping to raise. I was moaning about this very topic last weekend when my sweet husband of 26 years said he thought it was a beautiful thing and that all my reading and acquired knowledge had led me to this and he loved it. That really shocked me and like you, I am trying to lean into it. This is an excellent approach and appeals to me as a way to read all the TBR books as well as new ones. Thank you so much!

I don't know why I watch these types of videos. I'm not even a mom. (Not by my choice.) I'm 50+. I love reading. But I can't get over my relentless guilt about enjoying it. I did not grow up in a reading family. (I don't blame my parents. They're good people.) I'm not even sure if they ever directly said anything about it. But somehow or other, I always got the message that reading was a waste of time - time that could be used for something useful. Something productive. So even now, even after I've done my work, cleaned my apartment, spent time with family, done everything "productive" that I can think to do... I still feel guilty when I sit down to read. Even when it's my Bible. It doesn't help that I have no one in my real life who's much of a reader either. I'm not expecting anyone to solve this. It's my own problem. I just wish I could resolve it. I have SO MANY books piled around my house that I want to get to! But every time I start, so does the guilt. You would think it's getting better as I get older and hopefully wiser? No. If anything, it's getting worse. And now it's mingled with fear/anxiety, because I realize my years on this earth are getting closer to the end.

While I focus on homeschool moms, everything I talk about is for persons and you are completely welcome. Let yourself read this year! Believe it's your duty and your inheritance. I 100% do.

Maybe try writing down your"why" for reading and tuck it into whatever book you're reading and read it before you start in on the book to be in the right frame of mind. Also, if you're a scheduler, try putting reading time on the schedule, that way it might feel more like an intentional use of time and less like guilty pleasure. Best wishes and I hope over time you are able to enjoy reading more minutes the guilt.
@catherinenunan3584
@catherinenunan3584 8 месяцев назад
I agree with @thecommonplacehomeschool that the best thing any person can do is read. You may not be a mother physically but I am sure that you provide maternal love to others and may be what I call a spiritual mother to others. So it is vital to read. We are old enough now to gently allow that guilt and anxiety to go, no matter what we are reading. God would not want you to feel that way, or to fret. Take it one book at a time and take it slowly.

Remember, reading is a worthy pursuit. It's worthwhile because it enables us to understand the world around us, God, and our fellow human beings. I like the suggestion to put reading time on your schedule so you aren't always trying to somehow get to it. I have done that with things myself and it worked!

Ah, actually I was in a bad car accident right after I graduated from college and broke my bone in my right hand pointer finger! Being frugal and "I can figure this out!", I did not go for my follow-up appointment to have it reset, so my finger healed with the bones still unaligned and I can't bend the finger enough to properly hold my pen. I was wondering if anyone would comment on my weird adult-fix to keep writing. It looks weird but, I will say, my handwriting is still tops. ;)

Everytime I start I stop. I subscribed to common house but got overwhelmed. I am pretty illiterate. I grew up in public school and really just memorized stuff to pass a test and than boom, gone. I’m pretty lost on where to start with reading. Chronicles of Narnia? 🤣 I really want to fulfill myself. I want the good life, and most importantly want it for my children. ❤️

Public school kid here too! Excellent memorizer for tests (and quick forgetter), if I do say so myself. Narnia is a great place to start. I also recommend John Senior's One Thousand Good Books list. Find where you've read up to and then keep going from there! Pay no attention to the "grade levels", it's the path of the literary life! seascs.net/documents/2017/10/John%20Senior%20The%20Thousand%20Good%20Books%20List.pdf

This may sound silly, but it's okay to start with children's books! Build your stamina and appetite. Beatrix Potter or Winnie the Pooh. Even Thornton Burgess. Just wet your appetite with something and then dive in.

I appreciate all your videos! How do you balance reading new books with old ones you want to reread? Also, what do you do if you can't get into the book?
@thecommonplacehomeschool
@thecommonplacehomeschool 8 месяцев назад
Thank you! Admittedly, I don't read a lot of new books so when I find one I do want to read, I just toss it in. I like the "read three old books for every one new book" type of principle, so I recommend that. If I can't get into a book (it's boring, too difficult, or the wrong season), I'll shelve it with the hope of returning to it one day IF it's traditionally considered a good or great book. When it's a classic, the problem is probably with me, and I can try again at a later time. When it's a newer book, I assume I don't like it and just let it go.
@Kodutee
@Kodutee 8 месяцев назад
How do you physically organize the books you plan to read over the next year? For the first time in my life instead of just making lists that never realize I have separated piles of books I would like to read over the next year. But all the other books are still around and calling for my attention. I have definitely been a book glutton my whole life and the most difficult thing about planning a year of reading is not choosing what to read, it`s deciding that I`m probably not going to read this book this year, hundreds of times. I`m not going to give away most of my books just because I don`t plan on reading them this year, but their visual presence in a small apartment does distract me from sticking to the choices I`ve made.
@thecommonplacehomeschool
@thecommonplacehomeschool 8 месяцев назад
I'm so glad you asked this and I just read a Common House member's plan for the year that includes a separate bookshelf for her 2024 reads. Rather than leaving them among her other books (always tempting her to change course and "overeat"), she emptied an entire shelf just for this upcoming year's books. I think this is genius. It makes the habit you want (sticking to a literary plan) easier, or, as she said, it's the literary version of packing your lunch so you don't end up at Chipotle at noon. Since you said you have a smaller apartment, maybe you have less options for book storage. Could you pick-from your list-the books you expect to read that month and stick them on your nightstand or on the floor by your bed? Just rotate the months so you're not grabbing your book from your shelves?
@Kodutee
@Kodutee 8 месяцев назад
@@thecommonplacehomeschool Thank you! Yes, a separate shelf for the year would be great! I dream of a separate library room for the books not in this year's plan and keeping only selected books around everyday living areas. When I have my own house it's a top priority to not be surrounded by literal piles of books and to still be able to have a vast home library... At the moment the books I chose are in piles on the floor. While selecting them I did rearrange piles and shelves but the place is clearly too small for all the books I have. I'm not willing to go minimalist with books and will probably just have to live with it until my living space corresponds to my home library needs.
