HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANIMAL CROSSING!
That's right, it's been a year since Animal Crossing hit the shelves, which means we've now been in quarantine a whole year. Isn't that crazy? It also means this week was the anniversary of the channel, so woohoo for that!
Animal Crossing is a universally loved game, but it's had plenty of criticism it's whole life too. Today I'm going to talk though what I loved about all the things I LOVED about Animal Crossing, sandwiched with some things I... hm... didn't so much love about animal crossing....

Animal Crossing: New Horizons[a] is a 2020 life simulation game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch; it is the fifth main game in the Animal Crossing series. In New Horizons, the player controls a customizable character who moves to a deserted island after purchasing a package from Tom Nook, a tanuki character who has appeared in every entry in the Animal Crossing series. I was angry when my villagers don't even remember that it was 1 year I made ago and they still repeat the same topics again and again. Not even Isabelle mentions it and she ONLY talks about her personal life in the announcements. I really don't like Isabelle in this game. She used to do so much more in New Leaf and now she is just stuck in Resident Services repeating her personal life. She does say things like having a visitor on the campsite or comment about the upcoming event that is happening and when the month is coming to and end then mentions about the seasonal change. Other than that, thats pretty much all she does.

She could take over the role of both tom and herself. She needs a night shift replacement. Maybe Tom or digby. I’d say Tom should do something else and I have ideas but It’s part of a much bigger picture, so I won’t go “prattling” on about that lol. She could announce weather throughout the day, announce Non villager characters that visit. She had potential.

That last quote hits hard. "I love Animal Crossing, but also, Animal Crossing - sort your shit out." I love and hate ACNH at the same time. I want to play it, but I also feel pushed away from playing it. Nintendo can do better, they just need to get their thumbs out of their asses.

There's just so many silly things there aren't excuses for anymore that it becomes hard not to turn your eye to where they ARE spending time, and even that's far from perfect... but I still had SO much fun with New Horizons!!!

@@JTurn Definitely. I enjoyed it a ton. It's definitely one of my most played and most favorite Switch game aside from Breath of the Wild. But Nintendo can do better, they've proven so in the past. They just aren't showing us that they want to do better for New Horizons.

At this point I feel like Nintendo will have to add a whole new set of bugs/fish/deep sea critters to find. Or add full farming and cooking with another list of things to collect like recipes for dishes. I'd even take a new friend of CJ and Flick that makes models of the deep sea critters. Essentially, if they make more things for me to collect I'll be there. Honestly I only do my daily chores now and flower breeding the last rare flower colours.

Maybe it was secretly always just about collecting, but this is the first Animal Crossing that made me really feel like I was just hoarding and polishing, you know? Villagers included!

This was a really fair and honest review of this game. I tend to be harsh on it because I'm butthurt they left behind meaningful or interesting personalities with villagers/NPC and other activities/features/npcs. I feel let down that I bought two copies of the game and a second switch because of this game believing they would be giving us those missing things back only for it to feel shallow for me now. It's not a horrible game and you did mention positive things. It just could have been miles better. It really helped many people during that time and im grateful it did. It is definitely something we will remember about that time. Great video will definitely subscribe 👍😀🎊 Edit: typo

Thank you so much Emily! I totally agree also. WHERE is my little daily coffee slowly bringing Brewster out of his shell?? I think that's half the reason I picked up my Nintendo DS every day 😂 I think that the 'missed potential' element really is Animal Crossing: New Horizon's worst enemy. The fact the online features are about 10 years out of date, the fact there's so much omitted content. I agree, it could have been MILES better. But I feel like (and a similar thing happened with Pokemon Sword/Shield) it's one of those games that has committed the crime of just being good, rather than GREAT!, because we've all come to expect GREAT! 😂

@@JTurn I'd say New Horizons commited the crime of allowing New Leaf to be the better game. We expected a complete game to be released; the updates were content that should have been in it upon release, then Nintendo kinda just abandoned the game. It looks very pretty, we can decorate outside to a degree, but that's about it. Great video, though, very well balanced.

This week I decided to go back to new leaf and make a new town. Also loved that since I was missing for a year all my NL residents just assumed I died and kept calling me a ghost, I missed such charming interactions! I like the life improvements in horizons but it feels like the game lacks soul and just cares more for visual appeal and design..

16:40 it also doesn't account for people who don't/can't have nintendo online accounts. They're just left at the mercy of the RNG, meaning that if they want a piece of furniture for a particular theme, they have to wait for that recipe either via balloons, pascal, villagers, or the daily bottle. Waiting for balloons or visiting each villager's house in hopes of getting that one specific recipe is bonkers.

Very chill and natural review of ACNH. Great presentation of what worked and what didn't for you, and I pretty much agree on all points. I'm so glad that I'm not the only one deeply annoyed at the Dodo Airlines dialogue tree. It is like some sort of horrible mini-game.

When New Horizons first came out I was so close to buying Switch just to play the game lol. By now I'm rather glad I didn't. I enjoy seeing what others have created with their islands but I think I wouldn't get the same enjoyment actually playing :( I don't like playing online a lot and NH seems almost lackluster in single player. On another note, great video! I love the editing, especially the intro.

Haha I'm glad you liked it :D Now the community has died off a little, I considered starting again so that compare and despair wouldn't rule me so much and I could just enjoy playing a little every day and savour my own progress. But to be honest, I've picked Stardew Valley back up and that's MORE than feeding my 'homesteading' hunger!

i'm sure someone's already said this somewhere to you but the cutscene thing is (or at least was originally) an anti-cheat and anti-griefing measure, as well as an anti-data-corruption measure. the cutscene essentially hides a process the game does where it snapshots the entirety of the island as a frozen save state and all players on it so that if the host ends the multiplayer session without using the airport or a player disconnects due to network issues, it just reverts back to that save state for everyone involved to make sure no data was corrupted by the force-quit and/or to undo any change that was done that the host didn't want.

i want to be clear, there are WAAAAAAAY better ways to do this that nintendo is perfectly capable of and could implement with little to no trouble, the lengthy cutscenes and irritating dialogue is a choice they made and stuck with, but i just wanted to let you know what nintendo said about the flying-in cutscenes lol

Come on really now. For a person villager hunting it pure nuts that we have to go back to airport after each island and sit through that dialogue and cut scene over and over and over again. How much would it have taken to offer a package tour of 5 islands for 5 tickets.

@@serge9786 considering some of the online features other, smaller games have used successfully, it would've taken very little, ESPECIALLY for a company with the resources that nintendo is working with for their main exclusive series games like this. like i said, this is absolutely a choice they made not something they were forced into

Its sad but ACNH has become stale. New fashion & furniture have become boring. I say bring back the coffee shop. Expand the museum & store. Fix the boring airport. I would love to see a soul put back into villagers too.

3:49, nah mate, they're gonna get the Jim Henson company to do it. To make uncanny-valley puppet versions of all the villagers. They'll probably star a teenage girl as the main character (the mayor) of the series. (They did that in Labyrinth and Mirror Mask.)

That intro was beyond beautiful, amazing job! It really makes me wonder why there are no philosophical animals in Animal Crossing (as far as I know). I would love to just go up to an animal and have them spout bits of existentialism, or comment on the idea of time being a human construct like in the intro, etc. It’d probably get uncomfortably deep, but I feel Animal Crossing as a series could honestly help people appreciate the gift of life and the value of human friendships. That’d most likely be very odd to anyone who reads this comment, but I feel the series can have a greater reach beyond the repetitious nature of the animals’ normally wholesome exposition. These are just my thoughts. I’ve only gotten through the intro thus far, but just from that I’ve got high hopes for this video! 👍🏿😊

1. We should be able to buy bulk clothing at Able Sisters and if we don't want to wear the product, we should be able to keep it on our pockets and not have it sent home. 2. Nooks Cranny needs to have more items. For the only place in the game where you can buy furniture, they need more than 5 items when the items on the little table are always really small too. 3. When you talk to people like Saharrah or Gulliver, you shouldn't have to sit through the dialogue, or with Saharrah you should be able to buy multiple things at once and not have to go through dialogue because you already know I'm buying all 5 things. 4. Crafting should be made easier, we should be able to put a number to how many we want to craft. 5. I love this game so much but those are some improvements I can think of that would make me less annoyed! Oh also I hate how I have to sit through dialogue when the villagers are giving me a DIY I already have. I don't like having all these useless DIYs in my pocket all the time :( But yeah!!

Why did they make online play tedious? Well even though they stopped being a life sim near completely with the new premise of the game, they still want to insist it’s a life sim. They think making things tedious and slow somehow replicates life. There are more enjoyable life sim elements that they could add. Or, ya know, could’ve KEPT.

That's why I don't HATE parts of the communication with NPCs being conversational and cutesy but it just feels like lack of playtesting when they lean in SO hard on making the most heavily used parts of the game so TEDIOUS 😭😂

i do actually like how the nook miles replaced the achievements and badges from phineas in new leaf because at least nook miles are useful edit: this is just pure speculation but i feel like corporate pushed the game out before it was ready and that’s why the game feels so half/unfinished. i think this because they already had to push back the release from late 2019 to early 2020 which is not that long really. i think they should have taken longer to make it a more complete game on release

I bet your speculation isn't FAR off, I also kinda wonder if they had more complex DLC planned rather than just items. The absence of so much really felt like a substantial update was coming, but it was only ever really like... cosmetics and swimming? I wonder if the game doing so CRAZILY unexpectedly well because of the pandemic caused a SHARP drop-off in player numbers that made them apprehensive to keep supporting...

I got scammed out of nook tickets one time trying to do a turnip trade - they said their store was buying turnips for 400+ bells, and the admission to their island was like 2 or 4 tickets, and then they let you in. They even had another friend running right by their admission line saying stuff like "oh wow I just made 1 million bells!!"

Thank you for your comment Mina! For my backgrounds I used the Switch's native share feature to get 30 minute clips. For the footage, I used my own old RU-vid videos from last year. I recorded gameplay for those by streaming it to youtube using an Elgato Live Gamer Mini capture card, which is a little USB device that connects your TV, computer and Switch. I used a program called OBS for streaming. I hope this helps!

I think one thing that I couldn't handle with ACNH was the pressure to go every day if you missed a day villagers would say something if you missed a week it was like you slighted people-- people are passive aggressive in real life I don't need that in my fantasy space plus if your internet is shit the annoyance that is people flying into your island sucked. I would spend FIVE MINUTES watching that supid flying aimation only to find out it failed; I get it, the game is made in japan where there's wifi coming out of everyone's asshole. Just make a game for us poors for once?

the only reason i would be mad at this game was if they didn’t keep pushing updates. ultimately the developers are listening to the fans so i feel like batch crafting for example will be added to the game eventually

Hopefully you're right, I'd love if that kind of thing is added in the future but it's such an intuitive quality of life feature I think it's wild that it wasn't in there in the first place! At the very least for stuff you carry in stacks like fishing bait at least haha
