In a series so well known for diversity - why can’t you be gay in Mass Effect?
Heterosexual, bisexual and lesbian Shepards were possible from the very first game, but it took much longer to portray Shepard as gay. The story of being gay in Mass Effect is a long journey full of drama! Full of subterfuge! Full of sexy sci fi weapons!! Kaidan was so great that it didn't matter to me that I was limited in my options. They could have made the entire roster available for romance for my Shepard and he would have still picked Kaidan.

It's cause the devs only care about things that appeal to them. This is why you rarely see gay men in most media just in general. Cause it's done for themselves, not the audience.

When I heard about Kaidan I totally bum-rushed (pun absolutely intended) the trilogy in June 2016, in 1 and 2 accidentally romanced Liara and Jack because I just thought I was being nice 😭 but the second half of 3 with Kaidan made it so worth it 😌 also 🚀

What bothers me is why Kaidan romance scene in ME3 with broShep is shorter than with femShep. They cut one scene with cute dialogue from gay romance for no reason. I've read that in ME2 Jack, Jacob, Thane and Miranda were supposed to be romancable by both genders but they cut everything out only because they were scared of media. But now, in 2021, media aren't homophobic anymore vice versa they actually support diversity. They could restore the content to Legendary Edition ffs. Nobody forces str8 people to have same sex romance, it's just adds more options for people to have fun...

They weren't scared of the media, they just needed an excuse not to add male on male. After all Thane and Jacob were scrapped before development officially began while Jack and Miranda were cut late in development since they have recorded lines meaning it had to be approved by someone in charge to get to that point.

yeah, but imagine if jacob and thane were mlm, and in the third game one of them dies and the other cheats on shepard with a woman. cool representation 😭. i would probably prefer garrus to be bi because his romance is actually legendary and i think everyone should be able to experience it, but i'm not a gay man so i can't speak for them ofc.

My Shep had to go through the 2 games without romancing anyone, except for Kelly (for the fish). I basically rushed through ME2 so I can finally romance Kaidan. A bit disappointed that some animations were not included for the BroShep romance, like Kaidan holding Shep's hand during their Citadel date, or their love confession while Shep is sitting on Kaidan's lap before the final battle. Still, I'm grateful to be able to romance Kaidan with my BroShep. Made ME3 my favorite, despite the crappy ending.

I remember being so disappointed with Gil's romance. he was such a blink and you miss it character and his romance, and the storyline didn't even mesh well with what was happening in the story. Also fun fact part of the reason why they added a third romance in Andromeda so quickly was cause they had planned it to be in originally but cut it out

Yep. They cut it out right before release,but it was still in the game files and then the "Make Jaal Bi" hashtag on Twitter happened where we collectively yelled at BioWare to restore it ASAP.

Cut dialogue doesn't always mean intended. In ME2 for example there are fully voiced scenes for Femshep with Jack, Miranda, and Tali. And exactly one line for MShep/Garrus. What it means is that it was abandoned at some point late in development. Like with Ash and Kaidan. It's possible they believed gay men wouldn't like Jaal since Angarans are intended to be gender fluid.

Especially your humour and light-hearted approach ☺ As a huge Mass Effect fan and a major Kaidan enthusiast (see what I did there), I'm always interested in other gaymers' take on this. I'm still butthurt with BioWare cutting out all juicy gay content in 1 and 2, but Kaidan and Steve in 3 are very well written and portrayed. I was so happy when I finally could romance Kaidan in ME3. I hoped the legendary edition would include the romance from the start. That they would have added it cuz they spent so much time and work on remastering ME1. But alas... my head canon is still the slow burn romance. Hopefully the next ME game will have more options! I am a gay man myself, I'm a very avid gaymer, and I believe in diversity as much as everyone, but I don't play games for the protagonist's sex or sexuality, I'm only interested in their characterization and the story of the game. Besides, even if there was only one gay romance option in Mass Effect and Andromeda, I'd still be happy because it would still be better than none at all, and I f*cking love to romance Kaiden Alenko and Reyes Vidal

I’m a bi girl and I was so happy to discover that Shepard and Kaiden shared my sexual orientation, I like them both a lot and personally feel very protective over bi guys bc of biphobia and misandry within the lgbt+ community that they can deal with. Bi women are often more accepted by men bc many hetero men fetishized them (which isn’t good either ofc) and bi men often make hetero men uncomfortable. Bi boys: ily (/plat) and you’re valid, no matter what biphobic straights or gays say

I romanced Tali in 2 as well! But Kaiden's confession in 3 made my heart melt, so I of course, had to go for him. I thought he was a good fit for Shep. A calming, stable presence in the wake of all the chaos of the story.

I remember in 1999 I bought a copy of the Sims. At one point I tried to see what would happen if I got two guys to try to kiss, assuming there would be no way it would work. But it did work and I remember thinking huh, neato. Media backlash to the Sims? Zero. Turns out when nobody makes a fuss nobody cares. Funnily enough 15 or so years later the Sims 4 got a load of backlash for the exact same content which is an interesting anthropology study in its own right. Anyway for mass effect I played them on release and you're right that the romantic content felt like it wasn't for us. I wanted a homosexual pursuit and it wasn't available so I just ignored those parts of the game and rejected all the advances from the female crew mates. I'd run through 1 with Kaidan and Garrus as the regular team so was very happy that they brought Kaidan back with a homosexual option. And you're right it was very sweet and handled well, especially compared to Cortez who came over (to me) as an insert for representations sake (in the sense that he didn't have much to his character beyond "I used to have a same sex partner who is now dead"). A point in your video about Kaidan, I do believe that he was intended to be a male romance option in the first one. The dialogue is fully voiced and it's very clearly Kaidan's voice actor reading romantic dialogue to a male Shepherd. I don't think it was a mistake in pronouns at all I think it was deliberate, just removed due to corporate pressure.

the clickbait worked mostly because i went "wft is he talking about? don't you dare touch my all time favourite canadian love interest!" but alas you are correct, management cancelled the ever-loving shyte out of gay romances. the mod with the cut / or mistakenly recorded lines is great and saved my enjoyment of the first game, especially since it is next to impossible not to romance liara by mistake unless you treat her like shit. being able to have my male shep stop her advances in her tracks by saying "i am only interestet in men!" was just great.

Awesome video! Love the channel and how you present! It’s all so good! It always bums me out a little that I have to wait so long to be able to romance Kaidan in 3! However I do find something so cute about Kaidan discovering his sexuality and feelings for M/Shep. That’s how I view it anyway, so that I can justify having zero romance options until 1/3 of the way through ME3. A lot of people hate Kaidan as he’s “boring” but I find him to be a really complex and interesting character compared to most! Obviously the romance side opens him up even more, but I’ve always enjoyed Kaidan even before I knew I could romance him. 🚀

Another note on that 'defined character' non-answer: There's this great GDC talk that explains how you need to make it very clear to the player whether they're creating a character or inhabiting a character. Very late to find your vid, but I absolutely agree. Also worth mentioning that there are mods now that let you play the FULLY VOICED AND COMPLETELY ANIMATED m/m Kaidan romance for ME:1!! Even now for some reason queer male characters are being left WAY behind in most games. It's extremely frustrating. It's also incredibly frustrating that SO many queer female and gender queer relationships in games - the VERY few that exist - are so obviously written with the cis het male gaze in mind. As much as I loved it, Dragon Age Origins is also extremely uncomfortable to play in 2024. I played as a male HOF a while back and I couldn't play past the first act. It was SO bad. 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀

I’m a female gamer who prefers to play as mshep (it just makes more sense story wise) and I LOVE romancing Kaidan. I absolutely hate all the interactions mshep has with women in the game. Sexual harassment anyone? I wish there was an option in the game to say “Sorry, not interested, I’m gay”.

I avoid playing female characters as well. Femshep flirts with everyone, and her voice gets all flirty, and I absolutely hate it. She also has that weird walk in Mass Effect 2-3. Female characters are usually less developed too.

I had a similar issue in Mass Effect 2 (game forcing you to be straight) with Jacob. My Femshep continuously flirted with him. I had to download a mod to stop her from flirting. Anyways, the Jaal romance was a copy-paste of the female romance, fyi. Everything is the same except the pronouns.

Kaidan is my only romance as male shep. Disappointed at first that it took 5 years for gay romance to be in the game but the slow development and wholesomeness when you finally get to romance him made it so worth it (only for BioWare to tear it apart with that ending lol thanks a lot for the many heartbreaks in the game). Now that the next Mass Effect is under development, I hope there will be more representation and knowing how they do their job, I have high hopes that they won’t make it look “forced” just for face value.

I always romance kaiden as from the first game I loved his character and was upset to find I’d have to wait till the third game to romance him but at least I could. Would have been nice to have the gay option in the 2nd game I never knew Jacob was supposed be one but then wasn’t. Maybe if he was maybe his character could have been liked more by everyone

i just finished the ME3 in the legendary edition and i'm so at odd ends right now lmao i keep watching videos like this because i want to keep talking about it. i'm non-binary and bi, so even though i technically played as bro Shep in my mind they were too, and i also headcanoned that she had waaaay more love interests than the game acknowledges he did. i really appreciate this video breaking down the reality of what actually was programmed for the game beyond the personal stories fans make up to make things make sense

Also, the sad thing is that in the few gay male romance options we got, you can tell in a lot of the scenes Shepard’s animation in certain intimate moments was meant for female Shepard, but just with the male model slapped on it. It’s pretty lazy 😩

I remember having to play ME3 without my saves, and that their "default" world state is you choosing Miranda in ME1. Therefore I never had Kaidan in 3 at all. Not even got the crumb of gay, me. Although if we're being real, what I actually wanted was Wrex (sorry about it)

But I had played Mass Effect 2 which gives you a little 'visual novel' to cover your choices in ME1 so that actually meant I always got Kaidan which I was very pleased with 😍 I'm sorry you never got Kaidan though, I should have really mentioned in this video how easy it is to end up with only one gay option when you reach ME3. It's 2022 and to think how far gaming has come concerning LGBTQ Inclusion is confounding , insulting and just ignorant. I am significantly more likely to play a game if you can be gay and is one of the reasons I originally gravitated toward this series. Little did I know at the time it would take 3 games but I too am a sucker for a slow burn ❤️🚀🛸

I did go back and play the Jaal romance, and... It just never really clicked for me. I know some people who loved it, but there's a lot of little stuff that just make it not click. And it really, REALLY bothers me that this was the only "fix" they offered for that game, because... Gil's story is a homophobic mess and Reyes is a walking bad trope of the shady bisexual bad boy. Both these characters really needed a ground up overhaul. But that never happened, and they just left things for them as they were. But that history makes me refuse to buy the remaster. It just... With this history, bringing the homophobia of the past is just perpetuating it, saying that representing gay people doesn't really matter to them. Like yeah, I do love the slow burn of the Kaidan romance, and Steve is a nice character, but I still want to feel like I'm a part of this universe, and I don't feel that way in two out of the three games of the trilogy, and... I don't want to pay in 2021 for the homophobia of 2007/2010. It also makes me VERY skeptical of the next Mass Effect game - if they've had to be shamed into including this content before, why should I believe they'll just include it on their own in the future? If they're not taking the chance to offer this olive branch of "we've messed up, we want to make things better" here and now, why should I just expect that the followup is going to include that better treatment? As much as I love this franchise, I've been burned enough to not just run up to the fire.

Loved it! Tbh I’ve always had a hard time getting into ME because I have to choose either to put up with women constantly flirting with me for being nice or playing as a woman. (And tbh, when I play a female character in Bioware games I usually prefer to set them up with a girlfriend.) I think that’s why I’ve always preferred the Dragon Age games. I got to make out with Zevran, who is totally not a rip-off of Shrek’s Puss n Boots, right from the start, and my female Warden got to be with the future Divine, and then DA2 is just a pack of bisexuals in a trench coat.

I totally agree with everything you said. If you want your Sheppard to be a gay male, you need to intentionally (and constantly) reject female advances ALL THE TIME. It gets very annoying. Also. For people who enjoy gay romances in their games, I just recently found out about modded fully voice-acted companions in Skyrim. There's this one also called Kaidan, which, and I'm not exaggerating, blew me away with how well-written it is. Bioware should hire the mod creator to improve their own romance stories. If you like Bioware's romances, just give this a try, it's 10 times more immersive and enjoyable.

Could use some more diversity too, not just humans (why not a krogan? even for the giggles, lol). And more bisexual characters if they don't want to create more of them. It was dissapointing Garrus was exclusively for femshep and Tali for maleshep. Like, why? I'm a woman, playing male char and I demand more sexy guys in my game lol.

Jaal’s romance is very very good and the scenes they have are some of my favorite in the series. But what’s painful is that it was intended to be straight which meant the writers put real effort into it, whereas the gay male romances where just there or very disconnected. I mean Reyes is barely a romance (he’s basically a hookup) and Gil is great but so freaking generic! It’s just harsh to see that mass effect doesn’t put as much effort into gay men than everyone else.
