I always romance kaiden as from the first game I loved his character and was upset to find I’d have to wait till the third game to romance him but at least I could. Would have been nice to have the gay option in the 2nd game I never knew Jacob was supposed be one but then wasn’t. Maybe if he was maybe his character could have been liked more by everyone
Very late to find your vid, but I absolutely agree. Also worth mentioning that there are mods now that let you play the FULLY VOICED AND COMPLETELY ANIMATED m/m Kaidan romance for ME:1!! Even now for some reason queer male characters are being left WAY behind in most games. It's extremely frustrating. It's also incredibly frustrating that SO many queer female and gender queer relationships in games - the VERY few that exist - are so obviously written with the cis het male gaze in mind. As much as I loved it, Dragon Age Origins is also extremely uncomfortable to play in 2024. I played as a male HOF a while back and I couldn't play past the first act. It was SO bad. 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀
And some of the love making scene has your character seem like they are over layered of a female role. Like Jaal and your character in Mass Effect Andromeda.
i just finished the ME3 in the legendary edition and i'm so at odd ends right now lmao i keep watching videos like this because i want to keep talking about it. i'm non-binary and bi, so even though i technically played as bro Shep in my mind they were too, and i also headcanoned that she had waaaay more love interests than the game acknowledges he did. i really appreciate this video breaking down the reality of what actually was programmed for the game beyond the personal stories fans make up to make things make sense
I romanced Tali in 2 as well! But Kaiden's confession in 3 made my heart melt, so I of course, had to go for him. I thought he was a good fit for Shep. A calming, stable presence in the wake of all the chaos of the story.

Personally, Hero factory and the later reboot of bionicle were extremely lacking. they felt way more... limiting than og Bionicle was. Bionicle integrated so much with Technic that you could just integrate technic parts into it seamlessly, creating a new creation that is entirely your own. Hero factory and the Bionicle reboot however had way fewer technic connections. it was mostly ball, joint and the tiny pins, which made creating more interesting creations with them extremely difficult, without just using them alongside older bionicle pieces (which is what i've mostly used them for) I have never been satisfied by a custom CCBS build. But i have been by custom og Bionicle builds i've made Even so, yes, if i had known about the bionicle reboot, i would have probably gone out to get some of them

I'll be real.... I deeply resent Lego becoming so laser-focused on The Brick, as if other forms of building are "unclean," especially given technic is integrated into almost every medium-larger set these days. Lego isn't just "the brick," or at least in my view, it shouldn't be. It's a cryin' shame.
Kaidan is my only romance as male shep. Disappointed at first that it took 5 years for gay romance to be in the game but the slow development and wholesomeness when you finally get to romance him made it so worth it (only for BioWare to tear it apart with that ending lol thanks a lot for the many heartbreaks in the game). Now that the next Mass Effect is under development, I hope there will be more representation and knowing how they do their job, I have high hopes that they won’t make it look “forced” just for face value.
Really liked your outlook on the game. Being gay and older, (not that old), and love being a gamer I really want more relationships with representation and not based on a conservative bias. When are people going to realize that if the game is a good one everyone will buy it and not care what characters are doing to other characters in a different storyline. ❤

I totally agree with everything you said. If you want your Sheppard to be a gay male, you need to intentionally (and constantly) reject female advances ALL THE TIME. It gets very annoying. Also. For people who enjoy gay romances in their games, I just recently found out about modded fully voice-acted companions in Skyrim. There's this one also called Kaidan, which, and I'm not exaggerating, blew me away with how well-written it is. Bioware should hire the mod creator to improve their own romance stories. If you like Bioware's romances, just give this a try, it's 10 times more immersive and enjoyable.

13:57 so, I can’t speak for all translations, but I did play this game in german, and it’s just… well, impossible to perfectly use Chaos’ correct pronouns, because we just do not have gender-neutral pronouns that are used for people. We have "es", which is just "it", and I hope I don’t have to explain why people don’t want to use it for enby people; as "they", we’ve got "Sie", which is just "she" with plurl forms of verbs; and when speaking about an unidentified person, we usually resort to "er", "he". So the german "Hades" dialogues use alternatively "er" or "sie" (pl.) and exclusively gender neutral substantives, like "elternteil" (parent) to refer to Chaos. And it’s clunky, but it’s an attempt to respect such an identity in the confines of what we are capable of… saying. This is something I feel english-speakers have trouble understanding, other languages are just built different, and CAN’T PULL OFF all the things you do. And of course the absence of such ways to refer to non-binary people comes from the historic erasure of such people, but just wanting to represent and be represented does not automatically give you the ability to do it. Linguistic reforms are HARD, and LONG. There have been attempts, and there are attempts to add elements to languages like german or spanish (god, I haven’t even talked about the whole thing with romanic languages, and how it affects nb people, like here in Italy) but it’s taken years, and IT WILL take more years, before we come to some agreeable conclusion. Sorry for the long comment, but I want to talk to my friends in a way that respects their gender identity, and it makes me angry that sometimes I just CAN’T.

I had a similar issue in Mass Effect 2 (game forcing you to be straight) with Jacob. My Femshep continuously flirted with him. I had to download a mod to stop her from flirting. Anyways, the Jaal romance was a copy-paste of the female romance, fyi. Everything is the same except the pronouns.
