Hi! I'm a PLMHP (provisional counselor) out of Omaha, Nebraska. Went straight to agency after graduating last summer and Never envisioned myself going into private practice. I'll start seeing clients under my own practice next week😂 I am fortunate to have a private practice supervisor who coached me through building my own practice from the ground. From the jump, when I was first working under her part time, it was established that I would be able to transition any clients I was seeing under her over to my practice when it was ready to go. I'm not a Latina, but seeing you do your thing as a minority associate provider has been so encouraging, ESPECIALLY in that terrifying phase when I was doubting the probability of success going into private practice.

It depends on the location! My practicum was very, very casual. Everyone in jeans/t shirts and I showed up in business flats and a blazer. It just depends what type of facility and what they want.

I'm working towards an LPC. Was originally going through a military and emergency responder psychology program but they went into teach out. My goal is to prioritize a holistic approach to therapy. I have my personal training and health coaching cert + nutrition etc. But I'd love to provide animal and equine therapy, art therapy, writing, etc for working through trauma. I def want my own practice, so this was nice to watch!

Hi! Love your videos and so thankful I found it. Just graduated from a master's program, waiting on BBS for my Associate's number for AMFT/APCC in the state of California. I currently work at a County clinic in adult outpatient, I've worked as a family specialist with children in the foster system as well which I loved. I would love to do private practice but even with the experience I have, I'm still learning my preferred therapeutic modalities, how to script my expectations/boundaries/informed consent conversations in first sessions, etc. How do you feel confident to be ready to start private practice? I'd love more videos on billing, scheduling, office environments, logistics etc of how you started your private practice!! Thanks for all the work you do! :)

I feel confident because I consulted with another therapist before I started, my EHR program simple practice has all of that built in including all the forms that I just edited to fit my practice, and I have a supervisor who I consult with once a week. Hey! Getting my MFT and LPCC in California . Currently working as a new mental health counselor, and experiencing such burn out! I don’t start practicum for six more months and I feel so overwhelmed. They offered me to step down a position. However, the caseload is so much and we do house calls. Thinking of putting in my resignation this may not be the best time. I want to immerse myself in school and allow myself the time to grow.

Hello, when you say that you see 30-34 clients a month, what is the total number of times you interact with them? I guess I’m asking if you limit yourself to up to 9 clients a week, or is it 30 a week, and you're only counting the client once for the month?

Thanks for asking! 😊 So for me that means 30-34 individual 1 hour sessions with my therapy clients (not counting therapist in training consultation clients). I see 6-12 clients a week so that’s 6-12 individual 1 hour sessions.

Any other interaction is via text, email, and rarely a phone call if needed. Sometimes a session is longer than an hour if it’s a crisis intervention moment but the range I shared is my usual.

With mine it’s just me but you can hire others or do a group practice instead, depending on what you prefer😊

Can you clarify this with your own supervisor (or previous) as well in TX? I think that is where a lot of confusion is coming from is from the wording of this - RULE §681.91 d)An LPC Associate may practice counseling only as part of his or her internship and only under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S). The LPC Associate shall not engage in independent practice. I do not have a private practice I have a non-profit I been running for years prior to all the counseling changes. On all my marketing stuff my supervisor information is there.

100% that’s where a lot of confusion is coming from for many and that’s something to ask the Texas State Board directly and look at the rule book and their faq section. I hope they continue to update the wording. You and your supervisor can choose to proceed with you being self employed under their supervision you just Can not have your own practice as an LPC associate without being supervised by an LPC-S who agrees to it.

I live in West Virginia & have my provisional license. Im sad that I can’t start my own private practice currently because my state doesn’t allow it unless you are fully licensed. So I feel stuck working in a clinical setting. I’m struggling with it.

It also just feels crazy to me that I’ve gone to school for so long to get my masters and now post grad it feels like I still have to “pay my dues” so to speak in order to get fully licensed and get to where I really want to be. It’s discouraging. I’m also 25 weeks pregnant so that makes it even harder.
