It's been a long time coming but I finally got around to doing my PSP Battery mod with a massive 10,000 mAh batttery upgrade! Just like my previous mod with the AAA batteries this is a non invasive mod, meaning we won't be opening up the PSP at all and it can still be considered stock and won't effect its value as a collectible...not that PSPs are worth a ton of money but hey I like to be able to modular I suppose =D Enjoy!
I couple of parts I picked up for this other than the basic tools and the PSP hardcase which I just had lying around (I am sure they can be found on eBay easy enough).
Male/Female JST Connectors (eBay) $2.00
PSP Battery (eBay) $3.00
3.7V 10000mAH 8870129/8873130 LiPo Li-ion Polymer Rechargeable Battery (eBay) $8.00
PSP 2000 Traveller Case (Looks like it was a OEM Case) Looks like eBay has them going between $5.00 and $15.00.

No prob. Actually, I had the same problem with my PSP. So, I am currently testing a 2400mAh power pack. So far it is doing ok but I will keep your idea as plan B. Cheers!

I just love that you do not permanently alter the PSP shell itself. I cringe when I see people fuck up the body of the PSP for a mod. I guess you also love and respect the PSP like we do.

Absolute Longplay Absolutely! Sure you can make it prettier by putting it all inside but you can never undue it (without a crazy amount of effort anyways).

You could probably fit a 4kmah in there as well. Mod it with a JST plug and USBC port so you can change the battery without having to desolder it

Very cool! I still have 2 old model PSPs and one of those cases. Good solution for those old swollen batteries. My pspgo is the only one running on the original battery. The other two haven't been powered on in years

Hey hows it going, im in the process of doing just this however a non invasive type only adding a new cell to a stock battery, when im complete i plan on making a video to show how to rebuild using a new cell, i plan on removing the charge/read circuit board from the original battery and applying it to the new, ill be sure to make a video after its completed hopefully

Mark Payando awesome! I was thinking about doing an internal mod before this but I just couldn’t bring myself to tear out the umd drive on my god of war edition. Maybe if I find a cheap one at a yard sale or something I’ll go into some internals =D

Would you please provide the link to this battery? I removed the umd drive and I'm looking for a battery to fill that space, never did any soldering so I was looking for one that fits so I don't need to do a lot of cutting in the plastic

I wonder how long it would last if you hooked it up to a car battery? Then you could put a shoulder strap on the car battery to carry it with you. Or you could mount the psp and the car battery to a dolly and then connect a harbor freight generator hmmmmm but then where to put the gas can? First world problems! smh

Car batteries are 12v so they will destroy it, but if you got a cigarette lighter charger and ran it with that untill the battery was flat on the car that would tell you

Hey what's up dude! Was just curious about the part where you finally crack the battery open and reach the pcb. Does it matter which connection you snipped (cut) first? Positive or negative?

Nope. Just cut them both it doesn’t really matter which order. 👍

It is possible that it could occur if it was overcharged and the separation between the positive and negative was bridged. Cut one at a time and not the same time and you will be fine ✌️. Good luck bud.

@@CanadianZangief no problem! Your a cool dude! Hey I got another question man, sorry for buggin'. Would it be best to tear apart the original psp battery fully drained? Or any tips before hand? When it comes to the battery part haha. I'm afraid of cutting the battery in the first place but it needs to be done X) Sorry I am fairly new to soldering, but from what I hear it's super easy and intimidating at first. But I plan on tackling this fairly soon, I've ordered basically everything I need:D

i've done this 10-12 years ago.mine was using 18650 battery and just stick it with duct tape lol i have plan to redo this using 3d printed battery holder

How many hours does it take to full charge and discharge?

I usually just leave it plugged in overnight and I get a full charge. I don’t think it should take that much time and would probably closer to about 5-6 hours. As for idle discharge I seem to lose on average 1 bar of power every 3-5 weeks which is pretty decent. I get a good 30 hours of playing time from a full charge =D Results will obviously vary depending on battery condition and quality.

Hi, would you be able ot recommend a smaller battery that would fit within the PSP? I was thinking that if the UMD were removed it could fit in there. Thanks for the videos!

PhilExile well you should be able to fit in a 3.7v 3000 mAh LiPo battery inside. Most of them around about 110x60mm which should fit just fine once you take out the umd drive. I always go for cheap on eBay when it comes to those kinds of batteries just check the dimensions before you buy. Good luck with true mod bud 👍

I recently bought a battery for my PSP and after i charged it 100% it said i had about 6 hours of playtime but after 10 minutes of playtime it said i had 4:22 minutes remaining ..I had to order myself another one and that one will work as the 2nd one cost a bit more than the first and i had to get imported from the States

Is it possible to use this battery inside the psp 200o considering how thick this perticular battery is !? Will it fit inside without having to do a extreme amount of cutting? Let me know please?

DarkKokoro84 it’s to big to fit inside the psp. Internal battery mods that remove the UMD drive are usually limited to about 3,000-4,000 mAh.

amazing, all im missing is the lipo battery to give this a try. Any other kind of battery won't work? like 3 AA batteries ? i would get a smaller lipo tho, so it's more easily concealed maybe where the UMD reader is (im not too happy about taking it away but i've never used it, it's been like 10 years... it can go)

I did a video on using AA disposables for the PSP. You don’t get a huge amount of play time out of them but are great for pick up and play once in a blue moon. It is nice to have it all internal. Next PSP I think at a garage sale I might mod it that way just for fun =D Good luck with the mod and thanks for watching!

It can be a bit intimidating at first but once you actually get into its easy peasy and pretty cheap to do if you can get the parts cheap from ordering from China and i think I got my psp from a garage sale lol. I don’t got a lot of money either so that was pretty much my incentive to just jumping in, I’m a total beginner. sephirot7 Bj do you mean the regular psp charger cable? It is set up to charge normally. If you mean to use the batteries own charger it would be difficult since I have it wired up into the stock battery leads. It is possible but not without difficulty and a lot of swapping around each time.

hmm.. your 10000mah battery says 3,4wh, my 20000mah is 74wh

Good eye. I don’t know Wh as much as mAh and V but I seems to me that it’s 32 wh and becomes 62 wh in series. The standard calculation is Wh divided by V times 1000 which is less than the 20,000 mAh for me and is correct on your battery. Either way your battery will work just fine. 👍

Although this vid is old, I might try my luck. Do you know the exact function of this battery board you got out of that battery case? Sadly, my original broke and I was thinking if I could just use any other LiPo Battery Charging Board, hook it up directly to PSP (without the special connector, just solder it directly with some wires) and then the battery onto it. With that setup, it should be possible to charge the battery directly through the PSP with the USB or normal power supply, or am I wrong? Just using a small 1800 mAh battery, so no biggies there. Hope you can help me :) Thanks for your vid!

Kyuar I believe it mostly acts as a protection circuit to prevent overpowering. As long as you can control the charge with another board it should be fine. 👍

@@CanadianZangief Thanks for your fast response :) So I'm assuming the PSP does not have any internal charging pcbs? I was always wondering what the third pin on the PSP is for, two of them are +/-, and I always thought the third is a kind of signal pin for battery capacity check. Measuring the pins while being hooked to the original power supply outputs something like 1,9V on +/-, which got me curious. I don't wanna break my PSP with this experiment, so just hooking up another battery and disconnect it for charging would be the safest way I guess... Sadly, I found nothing about using any other battery board for the PSP on the internet.

Kyuar No the PSP does not. Without the battery inserted there is no need for a protection circuit since using the plug in without a battery already has the current supply and demand voltage regulated in the charge cable. I’m certainly no expert on the subject though, but when I was thinking this mod up I wanted to follow the easiest path that wouldn’t involve damaging or permanently modding it. Harvesting a battery was just the easiest way to do it for me.

But having to invest 10+€ in my case for a chinese battery just for the PCB seems a bit expensive, compared to those charging protection boards for a few cents. Plus, knowing and having that option for further consoles is a "nice to know" :) Always wanted to get deeper knowledge in that kind of stuff. I'm just a bit scared of hooking up a different PCB onto battery and PSP, connecting power plug for charging and then anything in the PSP could blow, you know? ^^"

Kyuar I think your generally pretty safe on the explosion but as long as you don’t overcharge or bridge a positive and negative. Let me know how you do I’m interested and like I said I am no expert and experimentation is how we all learn!

Diego Deotti you can certainly do smaller batteries, but these ones are to big to fit inside. You would probably be stuck with 5,000 mAh for internal.

Most voltage ratings have a slight amount of play 0.1-0.3 is a very acceptable level of variance that won’t impact the device operation 👍

Yes that should be fine as long as it’s the same type of battery. Lithium Polymer battery. You can usually go 0.1 or 0.2 in ether direction and be fine.

paulo magcalas I looked it up and those are Lithium Ion batteries they would work in theory but are known for instability and can explode because of the density which makes them smaller than LiPo batteries. I think if you wanted to try and use Lions you would need to build a different protection circuit and possibly even charge them independently from the PSP. You know all those stories about cellphones blowing up on people? Ya that’s due to poor Lithium Ion battery management.

I got a "3600" mAh battery, brand fucking new and can't even play battlefront 2 for more than 45mins. Tried a few different batteries and have the same problem... If this is a problem with the console and not the batteries, will this mod fix it? I'm assuming not but I'm hoping for a yes?

S WITTON well all I can say is buyer beware. There are lots of problems with battery suppliers mislabeling products. If it seems to cheap then there is probably a reason. I doubt it’s the console itself. I’m sure it would have stopped working already from such a major problem.

@@CanadianZangief sweet. To be honest I didn't pay a lot for it, it was around £10 which I know is cheaper than the Sony original ones. I have a couple psp consoles so may give this ago, its a great idea dude. Have you recorded the battery life to get a proper reading? & if so, how many hours of gameplay can i expect? Sorry for the long winded reply.

I want to mod my PSP 1000. Can I use original PSP battery board for battery mod? Board pic i.imgur.com/lBAQJxU.jpg Update I tried to connect new battery to the board but it won't charge. Red light blinks for like 100 ms and the goes away. Any thoughts?

ahmad hakimi the 18650 is it 4 AA lithium battery cells? Each of those batteries should be around 3.5-3.7V. The most the psp can handle is about 4.1v and that’s kind of the top end and probably won’t change properly.

I don’t think so since the battery compartment isn’t as easily accessible with the rear touch screen being accessible. You would probably need to just use external power banks and keep them separated.

Yes and no. The psp needs 3.7V to power it and the charging circuit is for 3.7V LiPo batteries. As long as it is 3.7V or close you can use other batteries but you would need to externally charge them.
