Can't sleep so I guess it's time for a mod. In this video I gut a cheap ebay psp 2400mAh (yeah right!) replacement battery that is pretty crap and rewire it to a legit 2500mAh lithium polymer batter from a usb power bank. Since permamodding my psp 2000 slim with cfw and a huge 64gb micro sd card I've no need for the internal umd drive so I figure the space is better utilized by a huge battery so I set out to reversibly mod my psp (that means no permanent cuts or modifications to the psp itself!) to do just that. Let's see if I run into any problems with this hack that should yield more than double the stock battery life!
Update: I've been playing the psp for around 4 to 5 hours and the meter still reads at 68%! Looks like I should conservatively surpass 12 hours of gaming at this rate.
As for selecting a battery, by my measurements the maximum size is around 65mmx73mmx10mm inside the umd bay so stay under those dimensions or the door wont shut.
I've posted a link for Ebay purchase referrals. Full disclosure: I'm trying out something new, if you use the link below then I get a small kickback from your purchase (it will cost you nothing, I just get paid for referring customers).

I have a "no experience" question: I just bought an LG battery to use for this mod, but it doesn't have those two long wire-type things sticking out of it (that you bent over and taped down). Do I just solder the wires directly to the + and - contacts on the battery then?

Oops really delayed reply, youtube didnt notify me of your reply. Yes you would just solder little wires onto the pads marked + and -. Just be quick since the plastic tends to melt.

@@sjm4306 how is it holding up now? I have a 3010 and I have removed the umd drive, I was looking for a battery that would fit perfectly in that spot so I don't need to do much plastic cutting, I never soldered anything, and since I'm Brazil and will be probably importing the battery, I have to be sure it will all work out, was looking for 3k/4k mah batteries, would you care to suggest some? There apparently is a NoUMD mod you can install with a homebrew firmware which can aid this setup. Personally having made the error to keep a lithium battery in a small space I would suggest a custom door with a grill and go ahead and cut a small opening for the wire for a more comfortable fit just for the temperature worries. Great idea in general and excellent video quality. Funny how the video quality feels like it may be the last thing viewers would care about but as it turns out you could be talking about the digestive system of dartfrogs ... incorrectly... but if it's well lit, edited properly and has an unnecessary amount of pixels people will watch it. 😄

Hi sjm. I discovered your video yesterday and I'm amazed. I bought a used PSP 3000 last year, but the original battery is dying out, so I tried the same battery you used to begin your mod; obviously, I expected poor results from that knockoff, but wanted to try it out. Instead of throwing it away, now thanks to you I have hope that I can still take advantage of the circuit board for the PSP. Now I won't have to worry about batteries for it for the rest of my life. So just for that, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. But since it's been more than a year, I wanted to hear if you have experienced any issues with your mod: heat, voltage, the PSP turning off without warning, etc. Best regards.

I used a 2500mAh lipo battery I pulled from a battery bank. I made this video years ago and put hundreds and hundreds of hours of play on the battery so it's pretty weak now compared to when I first installed it so it could use a replacement now. Lipos unfortunately have a limited lifespan even if you take care of them.

I'm trying to do a mod like this, but want a larger capacity than 2500 mAh (just because). I did buy a few batteries, but I was an idiot and didn't fully measure as some were WAY too big. I'm working to buy a new battery that will flawlessly fit, and these are my findings on how I'm picking it. Here are the max battery measurements that I'd recommend when looking for a battery As long as it's UNDER all these parameters, then it should fit. With a larger capacity battery (longer length), it does have to meet a stricter measurement (due to the left part). -- Battery thickness (height) I'd say under 7mm, preferred as close to 6mm as possible. I bought a 4,200 mAh battery that was 8.5mm thick, and the UMD door will NOT close. It's sticking out so it's too tall in height. That's why I'd recommend a 6mm. -- For Width from the top to bottom where the UMD was, that area is around a very tight 70mm (probably 68mm). HOWEVER, the left side where the battery normally goes is just under 55mm. So I'd say the max Width should be 50mm (you will have very small room to spare). -- For Length, if you go from the left to the right all the way across, that distance is about 110mm. Now, that would be a very "tight" fit so I'd recommend a max of 105mm to give some room to spare. So, for a recap: My estimated max room to play with when coming up with a battery for the back (if you want to take up all the room): Height: 6mm would be ideal. Not sure if 6.5 or 7.0mm will work. All I know is 8.5mm is way too much. Width (If only using UMD Section): Under 70mm for sure. I'd say 65mm to be safe. Length (using only the UMD Section): This will only give you around 70 to 73mm in length to play with for the UMD section only. Width (using the whole section, from left and UMD): The width is around 54mm. Max should be 50mm to give some wiggle room. Length (using the whole section, from left and UMD): Measures about 110mm across. Estimate a 105mm max to avoid a super tight fit. ======================= The super, TL;DR version, going by Height x Width x Length (maximum range and should fit): For only UMD Section: 6mm x 65mm x 70mm. For whole back section: 6mm x 50mm x 105mm. NOTE: You may have to cut some plastic parts off, especially the section that divides UMD and Battery.

Thank you for an informative video. Helps a lot as I am going to try it on my psp3000. It looks like you used a battery with 5.0 mm thickness, but as you mentioned the height inside (no UMD drive) is around 10 mm. In the video it looks snug already when all is closed. Is a 6.8 mm thick battery gonna cut it?
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 6 лет назад
Abraham De Santiago From what I remember there was plenty of room in the thickness department, the issue for the battery I had was the width was a tight fit.

I tried with an old official Sony one that was bulging. Unfortunately the Sony ones have much bigger boards and are more delicate. The little metal bit that join to the plastic connector snapped. I removed it and tried soldering 3 little wires to reconnect everything. I had a bit of success and managed to turn my psp on but while trying to setup everything more permanently, one of the soldering I did pulled out the entire trace and snapped it. I spotted a couple areas where I could try soldering new wires but they are so small and I am out of flux. Now I don't know what to do. Those batteries with the white text with boards that look sturdier would cost me 10$CAN to buy. I bough a 15$ battery before that was actually good. Says Ostent os on it. 1200mah and it seem pretty accurate. I already invested 6$ in the 2000mah cell. My Ostent actually work so I don't dare opening that one up.

Hi! I hope you can see this comment. I have some questions. Using a battery with 3.8v would minimize the lifespan of the psp? And, the circuit board of the psp battery differs from model to model? Like, a 1800mAh is different from the circuit of a battery with 2000mAh? I'm planning to install a galaxy s4 battery in my psp, but i don't have so much knowledge in electrical area :) Btw, nice video! One of the most informatives that i saw of this mod :)
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 6 лет назад
Luís Felipe Marconi Thanks for watching. The psp doesn't run directly off the battery, but rather uses a dc dc converter to generate the necessary voltages so being 0.1V off has little to no effect. In fact the 3.7v or 3.8v naming has little bearing since termination voltages for lithium rechargeables are actually around 4.2v. The psp batteries have a small circuit board that also tell the psp what size battery is attached so it can calculate remaining charge so when you do this mod the battery meter icon will no longer be accurate but the low battery warning will still work. I've heard that there is a way to change the reported capacity in some Chinese batteries but have yet to verify that.

This is great. I see that the protection circuit from the new battery is removed. I doubt you need it anyway because the knockoff circuit is the protection circuit itself. I wonder how the charging would be affected if the new battery's circuit was kept on.

BronxShots Charging would minisculy be slowed by having two protection boards on. The self discharge would be increased as well. Overall wouldn't hurt anything having two protection circuits cascaded but it won't help anything either.

Dimitris Loufakis If the cell inside the original battery were good quality then yes, but since the one I had was absolute crap with a high self discharge it would only drain both cells faster while not in use so I decided I didn't need the extra likely ~500mAh. HatterAndHare Thanks. A ~4000mAh battery will be just fine so long as it fits, just be aware that it will take quite awhile to fully charge (around four times as long as the stock battery). I can't imagine how long that battery would last, but with my 2500mAh battery I am getting upwards of 12 hours.
@TJTheDinosaurVideos
@TJTheDinosaurVideos 7 лет назад
sjm4306 sweet, thanks for the quick reply. I can totally deal with longer charge times, if it's going to last me all day I may as well charge it overnight! scrolling through the comments section I noticed mention of a timer? I'm not a tech wiz but I assume this is referring to the chip in the battery only accepting charge for the stock size (ie it would only charge to 1200mah if that was the size of the original cell). hoping I've misunderstood and I don't have to do battery gymnastics to get it to fully charge
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 7 лет назад
HatterAndHare The psp will use the full capacity of any battery attached but it uses the size of the stock battery (1200mAh) to calculate the percentage remaining and estimated runtime. In layman's terms the battery meter may not be accurate but the low battery warning which is based off voltage and not estimated capacity will still be fine. Also the first few times you charge it make sure you keep an eye on it for any heating or swelling of the battery just in case.

hi, sjm. Your video inspired me and helped me through a big battery mod installation. I was hoping you could help me with a problem since you seem to be a very knowledgeable tinkerer. Installed a 4000 mah battery in my PSP 3000 a week ago and it was working great. However, just today, the PSP quit mid game while the battery was about half way. At this point it can only be powered on with and AC adapter. With the battery installed and the AC adapter plugged in, the LED glows orange and the battery icon in the upper right of the home screen shows as full. In battery information it only reads "External source" while everything else blank. Also, I used a voltmeter while the battery was installed and it read about 3.9V for the 3.7V 4000 mah lipo. Any ideas what's going on? I would greatly appreciate any tips that you might have.

Probably the percent gauge needing to recalibrate after increasing the battery capacity. Give it a few charge cycles to see if it gets better. If not there's a work around on certain battery protection boards to solder pads to tell the psp the new capacity.

Yeah I guess it's either something wrong with the psp (not likely though if it didn't drain the oem battery) or the battery protection board. I will say though that the psp will drain the battery a bit when put into standby/sleep mode unless you completely shut it off (by holding the power switch for a few seconds till the screen goes black) but if it's completely going flat faster than a month or so while sleeping then it's definitely not normal.

@sjm4306
@sjm4306 Год назад
Battery wasn't from a very high quality powerbank (it was a freebie from a conference) so self discharge was pretty high. I'd estimate letting the fully charged battery sit in a drawer would drain it in a month. However if fully charged and immediately played I got well over 10 hours of runtime on the psp with decent backlight brightness and speaker volume. I didn't time it exactly unfortunately but I'm confident enough in that estimate after a quite few charge/discharge cycles. It's been a few years since this video though and I've moved onto a ps vita as my daily driver so I'm sure the battery in this psp has aged quite badly by now.

I wanna ask since I tear down my old LG Nexus 4 phone and it's battery is still viable (it's a 8.0 watt hour, 3.8v, and 2030mAh to 2100mAh battery), if the watt hour matters for these. Looking online, the replacement batteries that people use for their PSP are 6.6 Wh (cameron sino brands).
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 4 года назад
The watt-hour rating of a battery is simply the battery nominal voltage multiplied by its capacity (so for your nexus battery it'd be 3.8v x 2.1Ah = 7.98Wh). Since you are replacing the psp's stock battery with a higher capacity one then even though the nominal voltage stays the same then of course the Wh rating increases.

@sjm4306

@sjm4306 6 лет назад
If you are using a used battery that is two years old or more then be aware that it might have lost capacity due to age and use depending on many factors such as temperature, charge/discharge cycles, discharge state, storage conditions, etc. Another thing is have you let the battery now in the psp run till it shuts off and then fully charge? This should calibrate the controller and also I've noticed since putting a 2,500mAh battery inside the psp 1,200mAh one that the psp still thinks it is the smaller capacity one. So I run it for 4 hours and the battery meter shows that it is almost empty but I am able to run it for another 10 or so with only 1 bar left. I've heard about a way of soldering some pads on some chinese battery boards that will tell the psp the correct battery capacity but have yet to confirm this for myself.

Now my son took it to his boarding school and somehow got the battery disconnected. The chip is still attached to pcb and is giving orange blinking light when playing directly from the adaptor. @sjm4306
@sjm4306 6 лет назад
It should be alright, just tell your son to keep an eye on the temperature around the battery while he is playing just in case it starts getting hot due to the battery shorting. Sounds like the psp just isn't detecting a voltage even though it detects the chip so it's giving a warning. If your son is comfortable, the safest thing would be to open it and wrap tape around the disconnected battery wires.

I don't really understand what the technician means when he said its a problem with all 3000 models (I have a 3000 and it charges the battery perfectly). One thing to check that gave me a similar issue once is there are three contacts between the psp and battery: positive, battery data and negative. On one of my psps that stopped charging a good battery the middle contact in the battery was loose so I had to carefully open it and bend the metal fingers inwards a bit so it made better contact. It started working after that, since the psp needs to read the data from the battery to even charge or use it (sony's attempt I guess to prevent aftermarket batteries or to have different capacities which the psp could read to estimate remaining life).

Hi. I just modded my psp2000 with 4850mha battery (i looted it from the broken phablet) and it has several problems. First, it keeps turning off by itself. It's OK when I stay in the XMB screen but when I run any game, it goes off by itself. Second, the PSP not showing the exact battery time. The battery time goes around from 0:30 to 7:30. And the charge percentage goes around from 70% to 100% when it's fully charged. Third, I can't turn it on without connect adapter to it. When I try to turn the PSP on, it doesn't working. I have to put the battery charge adapter to the PSP and it goes on. No problem without the adapter once it's turned on. I've checked the battery voltage and the output is about 4V when fully charged. Kartowl Salad If it is a semi-modern phone then it's either a lithium ion or lithium polymer so either way the termination voltage will be 4.1-4.2v irrespective of what the label says. It would be really silly if Sony designed the psp to self destruct just because your battery is 0.2v higher than the nominal voltage.

and how about dropping the output voltage with a Trim Pot? it still could be charged normally because they charge with 5v input am I right? because I really want to use this battery because of its high capacity, or can I just use it with its 4.4 volts max output in the PSP without lowering the voltage, because the PSP takes 5v in for charge and to keep it on without a battery.
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 6 лет назад
Kartowl Salad There must be some sort of mislabelling then as no lithium rechargeable battery chemistry exists that has a termination voltage of 4.4V (in fact charging currently available batteries to that high will likely make them swell, burst, and ingnite). Just wire it as I've shown in the video and the psp charging circuitry will safely charge it to 4.2V. No complicated inefficient stepping down or anything else to worry about.
@kornik9988

why you dint just parallel both of the batteries so it will give you more capacity?
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 6 лет назад
I didnt trust the original battery as it was a dirt cheap impulse buy off ebay. I'd much rather have a solid 2500mAh battery than a 2500mAh plus possibly 300mAh battery that may or may not swell or catch fire.

So supposedly you can set the capacity by shortening the A, B, C pads on these Chinese PCB donor boards. Do you know anything about that? Should be able to set it to 2500mAh. Someone said there is a drawing of how to set it on the back of the PCB?
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 7 лет назад
Andrei Passioukov I'll have to check that and get back to you.
@Duxa_
@Duxa_ 7 лет назад
It appears that yours doesnt have that (judging from the second you show the back side of the PCB) but there are D, G, C, R pads on the front... here is a picture of ones with A, B , C - i.imgur.com/SaPe7Bg.png . Supposedly then the capacity etc will show properly.... also if using a legit SONY donor board from a non working sony battery do you know if desoldering the PCB resets any eeprom counters on there? Because it has been shown that official batteries do count number of cycles, so if reusing same board for batteries over the years and counters get into thousands it will be wildly wrong estimates on battery power.... but by definition eeprom is non volatile... so probably not? So it may actually be way better to use Chinese donor boards where we can set our capacity. lastly... the protection circuitry is not on the PCB right? Its in the Li-po cell itself? When using these bought Lipo cells the protection circuitry can stay intact?
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 7 лет назад
Andrei Passioukov Yeah mine has the ABC pads just under the chip and above the battery terminal. I might just solder one and see what it does. Didn't know OEM Sony batteries kept track of charge cycles but I guess that makes sense. Also protection is handled by the board and the cell is raw.
@Duxa_
@Duxa_ 7 лет назад
So if using another cell, most of them have built in protection in the cell (you can see wires going to a small chip and then from chip to the battery). Then you would have double protection? One in the PSP donor board, and one in the battery? Can that cause issues? For example this one - imgur.com/a/1CNcT As far as those pads, yeah I think none being shorted is default 1200Mah or whatever, then by shorting additional ones you add to that number, like 1200mAh + 1000mAh etc... some of these chinese boards have a diagram on the back of the PCB with the values.
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 7 лет назад
Andrei Passioukov Having double protection shouldn't really make a difference, just one would happen to trip before the other and the standby drain might be slightly more. As for the ABC pads, I am almost absolutely sure all the clone batteries use the same exact chip with the same firmware so if we can find the pic with the settings we could use it for all boards.

why don't let the battery inside of the pack like a extra battery, they could be possible?
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 5 лет назад
I would have done that if the battery cell that came in the original battery was reliable. This one was from China and of questionable quality (another one of these batteries I bought started to swell after a few months of use) so omitting it increased reliability as a whole.

Any update on this? Is the battery still okay or did it bloat or something like that?
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 Год назад
Hasn't bloated yet (thank god), but runtime is only probably half of what it was when I made the video. The secret to preventing batteries from bloating is to partially charge them a bit every few months even if you don't use them (up to ~80%). They bloat because they deplete too far and when charged up from completely dead after a long time a side reaction that consumes the electrolyte to produce hydrogen gas occurs, permanently damaging the cell.

how do you tell which is positive and which is negative on a board? Ive got the s110 battery board and i dont know what side is positive or not
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 2 года назад
It's usually marked, but there are usually other telltale signs like the negative is usually on a large ground plane and any connection to nearby polarized caps can be used to deduce polarity. The easiest way though is if the battery is still attached to just measure the voltage with a multimeter to find the polarity.
@3v068
@3v068 2 года назад
@@sjm4306 um... Slight problem with that. The battery didn't explode per se, but it did expand to an amount that makes it clear the cell is dead. I looked at the cell and there is a positive label, but no negative label. Im making an assumption that the negative lead is the one further from the positive marker, I'm just not entirely sure and don't want to fry the board.
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 2 года назад
For the connection between psp and battery module, yes the negative is the far opposite pad from the positive and the middle is the digital battery identifier signal.

Wallkar Wallkar I haven't had any major problems besides the graphic indicator being off but then again I use a vsh plugin that displays a voltage and percentage overlay in the corner so I just use that to gauge remaining battery life. Since this video a commenter pointed out that the pads labelled A, B, and C are used to tell the psp different capacities and by referencing a chart I was able to short the correct pads to tell the psp I have a ~2500mAh battery.

alphanate75 Thanks. Unfortunately the link is a general affiliate link and not one for the batteries. It is difficult linking to a specific battery because of how quickly stock changes from these Chinese sellers and there is often no easy way to search by battery size other than reading listing descriptions to find out dimensions. I get inundated with requests to constantly update links. So instead I posted the dimensions of the umd bay so that it would be easy enough to check if a battery would fit. I wish I could link the exact battery but I know as soon as I do within a week it would be sold out and I'd be back to square one.
