Perhaps what you're curious on is how you feel. And if you feed it it might revolutionize psychology. Or perhaps you go into a field to study that which makes up the basic building of senses, how is taste taste kind of stuff. Or maybe you find a way to best that emotional overtaking and keep going. I often fantasize about this, going back to the past and doing wacky shit with 21th century knowledge take over the world like exurb1a suggested, make a business out of food preservatives in the third century, do a tech speedrun where I'd try to get humanity nukes before internal combustion engines plus it's actually feasible, tech and science and mechanics really is my thing, and I have lots of experience with making things too, so if I could convince a monarch or lord to give me an allowance and two or three assistants to help me find the resources I need, I'm pretty sure I could build a 8th century nuke in under five years

Yes, it's both. Mostly we know that if "x" happens then "y" will follow, but we don't know why that is the case. And when we learn more it's usually that "x" causes "w", then "z" happens which causes "y", but we don't know why "w"causes "z". So basically we understand most things at a low level of complexity, but if you dig down into the details there's always a point at which we don't really know anymore. Personally I think that will probably always be the case. For every answer we get we have two new questions.

It made me think of a short story I read once about a world where mankind invented a way for doctors to directly monitor and control patients immune system in order to better fight the infections and diseases. In the story, it led to underground deathmatches where people would infect themselves with deadly diseases and stream their battle against it for entertainment just like some kind of e-sport.

It's always just felt like one of those things you should know to be a well-adjusted, professional adult, you know?

I totally agree. That's actually why, in most of my stories (mostly fanfiction), there are some characters who can use the underlying laws of their world to their advantage, often being more powerful than others their age as a result. In my RWBY fanfiction, for example, I came up with the idea of ambient aura (aura being the manifestation of a person's soul, which protects them from harm and heals small wounds), which is the result of people using their aura for centuries and it slowly radiating off into the environment to reach an equilibrium. I further theorized that, through training, one could sense this ambient aura, effectively gaining a sixth sense that allowed the person to detect movement all around them, even when something is invisible or otherwise hidden. And sure, in RWBY, people have what's called a semblance, which is already a super power, and there are a few fan characters who have a spider sense of sorts, and a canon character also has a similar ability, which lets her know when life forms near her are in danger. However, using aura to emulate this kind of sensory ability means that the character in question has an ability that would classify as a semblance in most other cases, and also has their semblance. Many characters in my fanfiction have aura-based abilities (note: Plural) that would be semblances in any other case, simply because they understand how to manipulate their aura to affect the world around them in the ways they want. And they got these abilities through focus, training, and by understanding how the world around them works. Instead of telekinesis, they manipulate the residual aura they left in objects to generate momentum, instead of firing lasers from their palms, they send air molecules or dust particles flying with aura shockwaves, and so on. Also, once I start writing my book, I'll make this a recurring theme. I'll have a group of antagonists who are essentially normal people as far as their magical abilities are concerned, but understand the laws of their world enough to seemingly break them. But they don't. It'll be like when you cool a fluid down so much that it moves up the sides of the bowl, or dribbles through microscopic holes in the bowl. To the average person, it looks like the fluid is breaking the laws of physics, but in reality, it is just following lesser known laws.

In Japanese aesthetics there's this term "Yugen" which might, or might not, describe that same sentiment you're talking about.
