I think the ignorance of getting back deceased mother back through alchemy cost both boys alot . In the end Al learned to trust his brother with life (somewhere within him he felt as if his human body existence was a lie , or they couldn't bring his body back ) and for Ed he learns that alchemy was not able to fix all life disasters/situations the one important reason he started learning alchemy . In the end both boys realise this truth and did take appropriate choice to get Al's body back.

Lust dies satisfied. Gluttony gets eaten. Envy commits suicide at the reveal that he's jealous. Sloth dies after giving his all in a long, hard fight. Wrath dies at peace. Pride lives on in a way, but with his own pride cast aside and being dependent on others. Greed sacrifices himself for others, feeling he has everything he could ever want.

Seeing Truth happily concede to Ed as they admit to their defeat is one of my favorite moments of the show. It made it feel like they’d been secretly rooting for him the whole time. The last scene with Truth and father can be summed up pretty well with this quote by A. Giloni: "Without factual truth you cannot have moral clarity. Without moral clarity you will never have factual truth.” Notice how Truth didn’t respond when father asked “what’s wrong with craving knowledge?”. And that’s because there *isn’t* anything wrong with wanting to pursue truth and perfection. It’s a natural desire most living things have. However it’s the way you pursue your truth that determines your character and what you actually learn/obtain in the end. Father tried to take the shortcut because of his hubris and was humbled by the truth; dragged back into the portal just as ignorant as he was the first day he came to existence. Ironically he achieves his wish at the price of the one thing he valued the most. The dwarf’s story also reminds me of Icarus and his wings of wax.
@Kashi_Mochibean
@Kashi_Mochibean 10 месяцев назад
Oh wow. That's amazing. Somehow this never fully registered to me until reading your comment. Thank you. The dwarf said "I think I could be happy if I could just leave this flask". And the portal of truth is the fount of all knowledge, and where he was dragged back to at the end. So he actually achieved what he was after at the cost of what really mattered. Dang. Of course the dwarf acted wrongly to get out of the flask to begin with, so it wouldn't necessarily be right for me to say things would be fine if he were just satisfied by that. But it does make me wonder if maybe there was possibly a more moral method that could be used for such a creature to find freedom.

@MysteriMustacheToast
@MysteriMustacheToast 10 месяцев назад
@@Kashi_Mochibean thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed reading it :) In response to your thoughts, I think the path he should have taken was exactly as Truth suggested. Instead of casting out all of the deadly sins and simply trying to avoid them, he should’ve learned to do what all humans do; set aside his hubris and humble himself enough to be willing to put himself through all of the major and minor inconveniences that naturally come with having each of the 7 deadly sins. The right thing to do would have been trying to further himself through that instead of obsessing over this grand delusion of surpassing what he perceives to be God, through deceit and acts of violence. He was basically a textbook narcissist. Indulged his id like a selfish ass while showing zilch signs of even remotely having a functioning superego. It’s just a little sad though because even if it was the cause of all his mistakes, his original dream was blameless and pretty understandable. Born from a Hohenheim when he was still a slave, naturally what he wanted the most was freedom. It’s unfortunate that he became incredibly misguided and came to believe that omniscience/omnipotence would somehow give it to him.

@@benjamintherogue2421 yes, in the show as a character, there is only one ‘Truth’. But in real life not really and that’s very visually well represented in fmab as well. Why do you think ‘Truth’ always takes on the shape of the silhouette of whoever is facing it? Truth is different for everyone and that’s pretty cut and dry lol not even a takeaway lesson of the show just real life logic. The existence of objective truths is still very much debated in the field of philosophy today.

Also, cant ignore that, good message aside, Ed and Al are dumb as fuck😂 They know what losing this war means. And yet they still refuse to use the philosopher stone. People already died to make it, and there is no way to bring them back, and more can come if the bad guys win. And yet they refuse the biggest advantage they have. Even worst when you think that in a way the souls are still there and suffering, so you let them go to waste instead of using it to avoid more people to suffer that fate. I love the anime with all my heart, easily one of my favorites, but cant help but see this in a logical way.😂

If you would like a more in depth explanation on the Alex and Hohenheim conversation. It started with Hohenheim relating with Father, how none of them got to fulfill their dreams. Then as to counteract that notion, Alex comes in exclaiming how grateful he is that Hohenheim decided to start a family with Trisha and had two sons. Because if it wasn't for Ed and Al a huge bunch of these events would have gone unnoticed. Ed and Al were the primary catalyst for the entire main cast looking into the corrupt system they were in. That is when Hohenheim realized that even if he had to make the hard choice and leave his family(for obvious good reasons), Trisha helped him fulfill his dreams. His family is great, his family is thriving, his family is doing wonderful things, he had sons that would go on to great things with or without Alchemy. Hohenheim in the end, achieved his dreams thanks to Trisha. Unlike Father. This entire story is so well written

I absolutely love Hoenheim's character, I always shed a tear or two at his final speech. The idea that he spent so long being unwillingly immortal, searching for death, living a hollow, meaningless life - and it was Trisha and his sons that gave his life any sense of purpose, that made it a life worth living. It's such a simple but beautiful message that really hits home because of just how long Hoenheim has lived for. I think that's a huge running theme in this show, life is about the bonds we make with each other. You can hoard money, power, knowledge, live unnaturally long, but it's all empty without other people.

As always, one of the greatest joys of watching someone experience FMA for the first time is seeing how their feelings towards Hohenheim change over time. What many people don't know however, is that this isn't where his story ends. In the manga there's a scene of him reuniting with Trisha in the afterlife. It's a shame that it was never adapted to the anime, but I understand that with only one episode left they wanted to focus on tying up loose ends more than anything else.

I really like your reaction. I've watched a lot of these reactions and no one ever gets how selfish Hoeinheim's request is. Asking a child to sacrifice their parent (which completely goes against the child's wishes of not making other people pay for their mistakes) just to feel better about his choice to not be in their life (which was totally necessary not faulting him for that) is incredibly selfish. He realizes that while he is talking to him and backs down. Fantastic writing and a truly amazing and tragic character from start to finish. Thanks for the reaction.

This is how you do an ending: The threat was dealt with halfway through the episode already. The show can end here and be fine. But that wasn't the plan: The writer wanted to tell a complete story. So we got all this already, and then we get a full episode tying up loose ends and giving glimpses at the future for the main cast. That's how you end an anime: You take your victory lap.

Ed’s Door: Sephirothic Tree of Life, representing how he had studied how to transmute human life and souls, via both transmuting his mother and brother. Al’s Door: stylized take on George Ripley’s text called “The Marrow or Alchemy”, which conveys that Al was more focused on the transmuting of the body for their mother when they performed the transmutation. It’s why his whole body was taken, a body for a body, versus Edward losing a limb for each time he transmuted a soul, first into the body Al made and then into the armor. Mustang’s Door: a design of the flame alchemy that was tattooed on Hawkeye’s back. Father’s Door: blank, because to our knowledge, he had never opened the portal or door of truth, never sought to learn anything of alchemy, just blindly trying to get power and control. He never really was after knowledge, he was after energy and power to use for himself. Like a small endless black void/hole.

What made the Dwarf/Father's fate so terrible was the fact he will never understand, or bring himself to understand, where he went wrong. He will live in that despair for all eternity. Edward, by contrast, did what the Dwarf could never have done. He was willing to sacrifice his ability to use alchemy because he realized the truth: that in the end all he was is a simple human being....but that wasn't bad at all. And Hoenheim after helping to setting right what his "brother" did with the help of his boys was finally able to rest in peace with his wife, something he truly deserved.

I love the little detail that when Homunculus asks “What’s wrong with seeking knowledge, what’s wrong with seeking perfection?!”, truth says nothing. Not only in a moment of silence for the lack of self-awareness and reflection from Homunculus, but also as a perfect answer to the question. Nothing. There’s nothing wrong with seeking perfection or craving knowledge, but it is wrong to steal everything from others and claim it as your own, to believe that you can gain any experience or knowledge or happiness or perfection from that.

They really needed to make an entire episode as an afterword to tie up all the loose ends. It's so happy and so sad.

Hey, I loved the watch through so far but let me just add some detail on this episode: Earlier Father specifically pointed out that the Homonculus crew are his sins given form, and expressly that Greed is his own greed. The thing that then goes on to fulfil Greed was friendship, something Father was expressly missing and unable to obtain. It makes us wonder how the others acted and how that reflects on Father, this lets us learn about Father, our ultimate villain, without him having to even be on screen. Then finally, when the nameless homonculus that was Father was getting sucked into the Truth, he asked what he did wrong, because that knowledge was one of the things he lacked. Feeding the ironic deaths of the sins, the being seeking all knowledge completely ignored and didn't learn about morals and dies ignorant of what he did wrong.

In a way, Father and Hoenheim's deaths mirrored how they lived, just like the homunculi. Father lived believing he was destined to be all-powerful and knew better than all, but "died" powerless and being shown that he was the most ignorant of all. Hoenheim lived with regret and hating the immortality that was forced upon him, but died with relief and wishing he could continue on (fully understanding and appreciating what he had in the end). Beautiful series from beginning to end!

Here's a sort of hidden fun fact for those who haven't yet made the connection; So, Truth takes a shape like whoever he is interacting with. When Ed first goes there Truth has child like proportions, but when we see Izumi go through, Truth looks more like an adult. This becomes much more blatant with dwarf in the flask seeing truth as just a ball with a mouth. This is where it gets interesting. Father talks about the earth as being a life form before using the eclipse to open his super portal to claim god, right? So if when truth stands at someone's door it takes their form but all white, then what looks like the earth, a globe, but all white? That's right, the moon itself is basically implied to be the earths "truth being". And I think that's awesome. And I think the idea that, if you think about it, the writer used a piece of nature that no one would ever question being in the story as a sort of foreshadowing, is pure genius.

All of the immortals have fitting deaths. Wrath with a calm smile, Greed feeling satisfied, Gluttony being consumed, even Father screaming that he just wanted knowledge but he never wanted to *learn* (hence his door of truth being blank), etc. But of all of them Hoenheim is my favorite. Earlier, we see Trisha telling Hoenheim that he’s not a monster. He saw himself as something inhuman - but what could possibly be more human than reaching the end of a long life & realizing that there’s still more to see and do?

I like Hohenheim's death because it felt like a human natural death. Something FATHER had originally robbed him of. An "immortal" can sacrifice ( if he gave his life for his sons) but only a human (the part of him he missed) can die naturally.

And with that, we have reached the end of Father and the Homunculi. And as you pointed out, the pattern still holds; Greed, the embodiment of selfish desire, dies making a selfless sacrifice to protect others. Not his possessions, but his friends. And as he dies, knowing what he found, his desire is finally satisfied. It's beautiful, and just one of the many reasons I absolutely love this story. Other people have definitely brought this up, but one of my favorite details in this episode is Father's door. Everyone who's passed through the Portal of Truth has their own door, inscribed with different symbols depicting the breadth of their knowledge of alchemy, the world, and the Truth. And as Father is drawn back into the Truth, we see that his door is entirely blank. Despite his intelligence, alchemical ability, and raw power, in all his centuries of life, he has learned absolutely nothing. Father attempted to surpass humanity and achieve perfection by removing his flaws, but he's completely missed the point, the lesson that the Truth is trying to teach; that we aren't meant to be gods. Our flaws are what make us human, and they're what make life worth living.
