Because the original is a mess design-wise? As good as people make the game out to be, the compass system is awful, even though you can spin the map it does nothing to help you find out where your supposed to go, you can miss guaranteed jumps forcing you to redo entire puzzles. And then there's the last disc, which everyone points out.
Anybody who loves jrpg’s should absolutely play final fantasy 6. My favorite game of all time. The story, characters, themes, world and especially the MUSIC is unmatched.
@@itkirk It's orchestrated but I feel like they also improved the songs. You'll notice they changed the arrangement a little bit, but not too much. Check out all the pixel remaster soundtracks. It's some of the best music I've ever heard
For the first 3/4ths...sadly. One of my favorite games of all time, never beat it because of that last part. I really need to go back. Actually, even the last 3rd is good story, it's just presented poorly.
All 5 of these games are in my Top 10 VideoGames of All Time 5. Persona 4 Golden 4. Fire Emblem Three Houses 3. XenoBlade Chronicles Definitive Edition 2. XenoBlade Chronicles 3 with Future Redeemed DLC 1. Persona 5 Royal
so, you have included 1st and 3rd Xenoblade, but didn't include Xenoblade 2, which is, objectively, has the most unique developed characters, a great story with twists, and where 90% of the game is not about "killing another mechon" people are strange creatures sometimes
@@no_bs_science haha brother its. Or that different from the others, I just didn’t like the character designs and it just wasn’t as engaging to me as the others
My Top 5 JRPG’s 1. Suikoden 1 & 2 2. Final Fantasy 7 3. Octopath Traveler 1 & 2 4. Dragon Ball Z: Attack Of The Saiyan’s 5. Star Ocean: 1st Departure & 2nd Story
I was gonna say suikoden 2 and the suikoden series as a whole needs to be top 3 if not number 1 for most everyone who's ever played it! It's a bold claim but I haven't met anyone who doest rank it top 3 of all time
Xenoblade is one of the greatest trilogies of any piece of media I have ever experienced. The definition of a piece of art masterpiece. Absolutely one of the greatest stories every told
@@mitch20003 I disagree. The "health sponge" quality of enemies really detracts from the enjoyability of many of the battles. Arise gives up difficulty in favor of long health bars, making for tedious combat even against trash mobs after grinding.
Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age If anyone has a GBA or is comfortable with emulation, I highly recommend playing through these 2. These are 2 of the greatest JRPG games I’ve ever played. Give them a Quick Look up even if you’ve never heard of them. Any Final Fantasy or Square fan would absolutely love these gems of the past. They are also available on the Nintendo Switch GBA software. Amazing games made by a team that clearly had a deep passion for JRPG story telling and mechanic. I’ve replayed them both probably 10+ times, the music, pixel art style and level design, puzzle mechanics, battle system.. summons.. everything is top notch in my book.
Why in the holy fook has Chrono Trigger not been remade with a face lift?!? It's one of the best stories/ rpg games ever written. It sold well and was always given amazing reviews from everyone right away and is STILL LOVED. It makes ZERO sense.
I strongly nominate ni no kuni wrath of the white witch, this is the one of its kind JRPG. I don't think there will be another Ghibli game ever, seriously, ever!
@@jellalfernandes9820 I'm very interested in which game you could rate as 10/10 Mario? Lego? Xenoblade and Trails are the best story-heavy series I've played so far and there're a ton of people who would agree with this point of view Trails have their issues like the guy above mentioned too easy difficulty (which can be dealt with mods), and inconsistent tempo of the story (you can have 10 hours of slow-paced investigation and quests, followed by 3 hours of constant action/cutscenes) Trails in the Sky 1-2, all Crossbell ark, Trails of the Cold Steel 1-4, and Trails into the Daybreak 1 are excellent. I'm not fond of Sky 3rd, as it's the only game I found a bit boring for me, and by far not impressed with Daybreak 2 (but I'm like 10 hours in, so who knows) but to say that Azure is the pinnacle of the Trails series, and rate it 8/10...
Good list. If I'll change anything, I'll replace FF7 with FF6, which is a superior game. Also, I'll replace DQ5 with Final Fantasy Tactics WotL. That's the second best game in the list behind Chrono Trigger.
Never played many jrpgs growing up, besides Pokemon. But now I'm eager to delve into the genre, mainly into the Persona series. These lists are great to make a backlog of games to play
Persona is definitely one of the most consistent JRPG series, P5 Royal specifically is a very beginner friendly game and great for newcomers to the series.
If you like it then you should check out Shin Megami Tensei, it's the origin of persona and a really good series, pretty different setting though, since SMT is almost always set in a post-apocalyptic world, at least the mainline ones
Breath of Fire 1, 2, and 3 Suikuden 1, 2, and 3 Xenogears and Xenosaga Grandia Fire Emblem FF 1 through 12 Tales of Vesperia StarOcean And the TOP #1 is.... Mario RPG lol. Seriously this game is fun.
Well, he did say that he prioritises visuals, that his tastes were shallow, and said that he liked Final Fantasy 10 DESPITE its out of date graphics. He also lumped FF7R and FF7 classic together which, no.... just.... no....
If you love jrpgs, the legend of heroes games should also be considered. It’s like the mcu. There are like 11-13 games right now I think all inter connected. Honestly you don’t need to play all of them to understand the story. Either jump into the newest ones, the daybreak ones or where I started is cold steel 1. I am fully caught up from cold steel 1. I am currently working through the crossbell games. Super cool after already playing cold steel 1 and 2
1-Legend of Zelda Manjora's Mask 2-Final Fantasy 10 3-Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time 4-Final Fantasy 7 5-Final Fantasy 9 6-Radiata Stories 7-Shadow of the colossus 8-Lord of the rings, return of the king 9-Suikoden 4 10- The Bard's Tale
Damn so many amazing JPRGS left out, i think its just so hard to make a top 10 list. You cant leave out games like Legend Of The Dragoon, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, Tales Of Vesperia, Kingdom Hearts 2. So so many haha.
You had me at takes of arise I'm not afraid to admit I beat it 3 times and it's the only tales of game I've played more than once it hits all the right places.
JRPG from Falcom is great as well. My first YS series was YS 8. Tried it a few years ago and got hooked. Ended up finishing both 8 and 9. Currently waiting for YS X release. For Trails, I started with Cold Steel. Managed to finish Cold Steel I - IV. I am now a fan of Falcom games.
Terranigma. Which can be played via a hacked PAL SNES copy, or you can just Emulate, which is what most people do to play it, because North America never got an official release due to Nintendo switching their focus to the N64 at the time.
NA didn't get it because Enix America closed down. It got released in PAL territories because it was published by Nintendo directly. Publishers like Enix, Atlus and Squaresoft weren't big enough to have European publishing divisions and required third party companies to publish for them (usually Nintendo for SNES games) which is why very few SNES RPGs actually got PAL releases.
Ok if you haven't played Xenogears you were probably all "uggh another amnesiac protagonist" but this is in fact one of the greates scifi stories ever told in any medium.
Atlus did a great job with the Persona series and I hope they do even better with Metaphor in October. Dragon Quest has confirmed excellent standards with the latest chapter, but it is Xenoblade that takes the crown as the best JRPG of this era. Monolith, with its Xenoblade series, is what Square was with Final Fantasy, for me it is the real point of reference. Unfortunately, Xenoblade's weakness is being a Nintendo exclusive; if it were a multiplatform game it would be unanimously recognized as the undisputed ruler of JRPGs.
My personal top 10: 01. Suikoden II 02. Xenogears 03. Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time 04. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky 05. Persona 5 Royal 06. Final Fantasy XII 07. Octopath Traveler II 08. Chrono Trigger 09. Shadow Hearts 10. Valkyrie Profile
Sad x good list. Though for me suikoden should be on the list, dragon quest 8, ffx,ff6,ff9, valk profile sylmeria, persona 3 fes, persona 4, wild arms 3 4, rogue galaxy, shadow hearts, breath of fire.xeno saga. Damn a lot of games not enough for top 10 xD
The legend of heroes trails from zero. I'm still getting into the trails series now but i played 0 first and it quickly shot up to one of my favorite rpgs ever. That's gotta be my recommendation
Cheating with the amount but not in any order: Tales of Xillia (1&2) Xenoblade Chronicles Xenogears Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology (Sleeper) Legend of Dragoon Star Ocean: The Last Hope Trails of Cold Steel (1-4) Chrono Trigger Magna Carta 2 (Also a Sleeper!) Xenosaga 1 Legend of Legaia Grandia 2&3 Scarlet Nexus Final Fantasy 13 (yeah I said it!) Fire Emblem Three Houses
Persona 4 crawled so that P5 could fly. Too bad it'll never get the glow-up that P3 got, but it's a great game nonetheless, with a fantastic set of characters, and well worth your time.
You forgot to point that a lot of the games from your list are on PC too. You only did it for Chrono Trigger and FF10. Dq 11 - PC, FF7 - PC, Persona 5 -PC, Tales of Arise - PC
that was the golden era of jrpgs, I cant do random battles anymore though, thats why im a big fan of bravery default, you can shut off battles and then turn on when youre ready to grind.
"I wanna spend more time highlighting the other less talked about games" Proceeds to talk about the game regarded by many as the best one out of the golden age of jrpg 😂
Great recommendation, only game i‘d add would be any version of persona 3, for convenience and quality of life changes personally 3 reload. Best Persona game IMO, followed closely by persona 4 golden and then 5
I think that from a Story Point, Tales of Symphonya is still the best tales game out there. Aside from that, i think Grandia 2, Shadow hearts 1+2 and Skies of Arcadia come to my mind when thinking about good underated JRPGs. But they have not aged so well with their Graphics. Fire Emblem Path of Radiance+Radiant Dawn are also must plays in my opinion.
