For me, having simple finances is a part of my minimalist lifestyle: one credit card which is paid in full with every pay, automatic savings which are deducted with every pay, and bills which are paid as soon as they are received. I appreciate the encouragement to start investing. Many thanks for another great video!

Thank you. Really great tips. 1. Invest $50 in stock market 2. Review CC statement for surprise charges 3. Unsubscribe from email newsletters 4. Sell something on market place, clutter into cash 5. Run an Amazon order history report to see how much you spent in the year 6. Empty you Amazon cart 7. Pay $100 to your highest interest rate debt, to pay it down 8. Cancel one (or more) subscription 9. Pack a lunch for work tomorrow, save 10. Decide to spend no money for the next week

Last february was my no spend month. I made sure i had all my non perishables like tp, toothpaste etc and gave myself a $50 bill to spend on fresh produce and eggs etc and locked away my credit card for the month. I spent less than my 50 and came out will a cleaner pantry, a smaller waistline, and a huge savings account deposit. I will be doing it again this February and I'm going to try it again in August as well.

This is so encouraging! I’m doing a no spend challenge starting tomorrow! I’m only doing $100 for milk and fresh produces for the kids, but we are doing home meals and I am cloth diapering again (stopped because I couldn’t keep up, and got a bit lazy TBH). I’m excited to get this rolling!
@Sunnyflower67
@Sunnyflower67 2 года назад
@@alifewithluna4134 Good luck with everything! I wanted to throw you a little comment about the diapers, if I may. Remember when he talked about buying experiences. Or, to remove negative experiences? I used cloth for awhile years ago, with my 1st. I found that the set up supplies were quite expensive, but you already have that taken care of. I found that the cloth added lots of work to my day, was appearingly uncomfortable to my son, (6-8 mths) cuz he got lots more rashes from having wetness against his skin more than he would with the disposable. So, if my opinion is welcome at all seeing as I just jumped in, this may not be worth including in your money-saving month. I found too that trying to save money by buying generic was a total waste. I had to use twice as many. There's just some things you can buy generics and some just aren't worth it. 😃

Bought my grandparents place in 1995 and kept their same phone number. For 10 years, i had a $3.00 monthly fee on my phone bill, but assumed it was an admin fee. Finally found out that fee was for a rental rotary phone stored in the basement. The rental started in 1956! Couldn't get a refund, not even keep the phone! I had to send it back! 🙉🤷🏼‍♀️

After watching your video yesterday Joshua I decided to spend 5 minutes unsubscribing from and deleting emails. After my timer went off I decided to add a further 5 minutes as I was making progress and 5 more minutes deleting emails was better than 5 minutes scrolling socials. In ten minutes my inbox went from 27,000 to 11,000 😮😮. Still more work to do but very proud of my efforts. Also I read the guest post on your page about digital minimalism and I’m planning on implementing some of her tips. Thanks for what you do.

I’d suggest being careful when buying stocks, it isn’t as easy as putting $50 in and then getting profit. Research who to invest in, understand common terms I.e: efts, mutual funds, dividends etc etc
@exantiuse497
@exantiuse497 2 года назад
Yes. In fact, for the majority of people, investing in index funds is much more proftable than buying individual stocks. The exeption is people who can spend hours each day analysing the market to figure out what stocks are going to beat the market, i.e. people who basically (or literally) do it for a living. If you don't know what you're doing, spending five minutes looking up an interesting stock and buying it for 50 dollars is equivalent to playing blackjack on a casino for $50

Warren Buffet used to tell people, women in particular, buy what you know. Like shares of Proctor and Gamble. I bought 75 shares of Apple a few years ago at $98/share (worth about $7k). It split 4 ways, and increased in value/share. My 75 shares are now worth about $49k. Also, if you don’t understand it, don’t invest in it. I have no clue about bitcoin, cryptocurrency, and the like. One other secret to making money in the stock market is patience. Ride out the ups and downs.

Reviewing your monthly credit card statement is also important to make sure all the charges are legit. Scammers will often make small charges, often for only a few dollars, on your card to see if you notice. If you don't, it either paves the way for a larger purchase down the road or they continue to make small, fraudulent charges on your card which add up over time, esp. since they are doing it to so many people.

I agree with all of these except cancelling your home phone if you have a cell phone. If you have to call 911, and you don't have a strong cell signal, you will be in trouble. Also, if someone is visiting your house and has to call 911 for you; their phone is registered to their address. We keep our land line for this reason. Hopefully never need it but......

I'm pretty good at the money saving tips you mentioned since I strive to lead a simple life. I rexentky upcycled to 5 black blouses that I've had for ages and donated others. But living on a meager pension means I'm always watchful of my spending and I have to live without many things i wish i could have. For example, buy more books and tools for my craft. Thank goodness I always see the bright side of it since one added benefit of less consumption is giving the planet a break. I always thought that investing was for people who had lots of money and could afford to hire financial advisors. I'll look up your suggestion. Thanks.

Making coffee at home has been a consistent money saver for me. I always drink iced coffee, so I bought an insulated 24-ounce stainless steel travel mug with stainless steel straw. I also bought a glass pitcher. My wife likes hot coffee, so she makes a fresh pot daily but makes more than she needs. We pour the leftover into my pitcher and put it in the fridge, so I have iced coffee every day. We set up the coffee machine at night and use it's "Delay Brew" function to start the machine in the morning. I was spending ~ $4 / day on coffee. Now coffee out is a once-in-a-while treat.

I like the one week without spending idea. Anybody can do that even if they have never tried something like that before. Personally, I have been doing 1 or 2 no.spend months per year. But sometimes I avoid doing them because a month seems long. If I did more no.spend weeks, it could do the same thing as my no.spend months. I am going to aim for 1 no.spend month per year and at least 5 no.spend weeks. Thank you!

How about "ten things you can do to get your spouse onboard"? I appreciate and agree with much of your content, and have actually been a minimalist for several years, and before I found your channel. But my lovely and gracious wife is comfortable with lots of stuff, lots of clutter, clothes that are never worn, shoes that don't fit and so forth. She has good intentions but always says she is "too busy" to go through her stuff. I send her links to your videos so she has the content, sees (presumably) the advantages, but can't seem to take action. Could you address this?
@ErikHaanVincent
@ErikHaanVincent 2 года назад
If your wife is anything like mine, she doesn't like to be preached to. (I actually think that's true of most people). I recommend being gracious and allowing them space to be inspired - on their own - to a minimalist approach. If you just do your minimalist thing and don't push she might see something you're doing which she sees is working for you and might apply to her, too. Sit back, be comfortable in being a minimalist yourself, and let her come to you with questions.

They want to make money, but they don't want anyone else to. Basically cancelling or shutting down every possible service or purchase seems like a great strategy for YOU to cut costs, but what about everyone else trying to live within our Capitalist economy ? Again, I think the better answer is a balance and middle ground for savings vs expenditures. Challenging or opposing every possible $1 of every transaction every day is no way to go thru life, and not a recipe for a healthy economy for EVERYONE (rich/poor/diminished middle class).

How do you recommend transfer of payment and item when selling the item on Facebook Marketplace?

If you’re not comfortable giving your address you can do a meet up at a public place like a shopping centre or the police station parking lot. I often receive money through e-transfer and can leave the item out for porch pickup-we live in a very safe area with no porch pirates mind you.

@@rhondahoffman3719 it’s just through our banks. I give the buyer my email and they send an electronic transfer from their bank. I get an email to either initiate or confirm deposit into my account.

After seeing my unread messages grow and grow… I started slowly unsubscribing… what a difference! Now, I get less email alerts, don’t miss important things (Appt reminders) and when I do get a ad, I open and unsubscribe quickly. Mentally it feels soooo good! Facebook is the EASIEST way to sell things. I’ve gotten rid of so much stuff- baby stuff sells best/fastest. I’ll even flip things I find on the side of the road on trash day.

I disagree that if you are struggling to save you should invest $50 instead. It's more important to have cash money in savings to access in an emergency first rather than money in the stock market which is more at risk of being lost.

I don't know why stocks seem like 'gambling $' to me!

It kind of is because there's no guarantee that you will get your money back. If you're very risk adverse, stocks are not a good idea.

Investing in stocks = investing in consumerism and everything you advocate against... Hope that too many people will not find this channel and still overspend so you can get a good ROI... Or am I the one misunderstanding something here 🤔

I have one to hide gift purchases from my wife. And my wife and I have a joint one to accrue rewards points with. But we pay off the balance, in full, each month.
