I'm happy they didn't do a sequel, I think it would have spoilt it. Elf is a great film on its own and wrapped up the story in one film. I can't see what possible story they could have for a sequel.
Same here. Sometimes a film doesn't need a sequel, even if it's a good movie and does well at the box office (*especially* if it does well at the box office), and it's refreshing to know that at least some people in Hollywood understand that.
Plus it’s hard to do a sequel with the deaths of James Caan (Walter Hobbs) and Ed Asner (Santa). Sure, it’d be easy to kill off Walter Hobbs and say he passed away during the time skip between the first film and sequel, but there’s no way you can get a great Santa like Ed Asner. No one could play him as great as the late Ed Asner did.
1. Jon Favreau also directed the live-action remake of "The Jungle Book". 2. Funny how you mentioned that "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" inspired the look of "Elf" because Buddy's outfit looks exactly like the Head Elf from "Rudolph"'s outfit.
My favorite part of the movie is instead of doing the usual "gets tricked into thinking the mall Santa is the real Santa" bit, instead Buddy isn't fooled for a moment, because as he put it, he actually knows Santa. As for Jim Carrey almost being Buddy, I think Will Ferrell plays the "innocent guy" role better as Jim is more wacky and vulgar.
I was just a little kid when I first saw it in theaters it was one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time.. until this day my family and I still watch it including the Polar Express too..
bonus fact, the actor who tells Buddy he's no good at toy making is played by peter billingsley. Most famously known for playing Ralphie in a Christmas story.
I just learned an amazing fact that Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) is good friends with director Jon Favreau, and is listed as an executive producer on “Iron Man.” There are quite a few movie tie-ins betwixt the duo, and actor Vince Vaughn as well, but it's a real treat to know the Elf that I thought kinda looked familiar is insofacto the man, the myth, the legendary ... Peter Billingsley! He's the Elf Foreman called Ming Ming (uncredited) who -whilst venting to another Elf, Foom Foom, unaware that Buddy was in the room just behind them, inadvertently lets the cat out of the bag about Buddy's true identity. Apparently Billingsley's enjoyed an impressive showing in a variety of Christmas pictures over the years. "You'll shoot your eye out, kid! Ho, ho, ho!"
John Favrough actually has directed and produced movies before Iron Man. He's been credited as a director and producer for a movie back in 1998 called Bad cop, bad cop.
USA Network was obsessed with this movie. It was impossible to go a month without USA Network playing this movie, 40 Year Old Virgin or National Treasure.

I don't understand how Will never got nominated for an Oscar, or Golden Globe, for this movie???? I know a lot of people who were raised by elves at the North Pole and Will NAILED IT, with his portrayal!
You know another reason with why Jim Carrey didn’t get the role in Elf was because when Elf really went into production in the early 2000’s, Jim Carrey had already starred in another Christmas Classic The Grinch

Actually, I recall there being an episode from Pinky and the Brain where Pinky does the burp. So, I wouldn't doubt it that all they did was take the recording and extended it.
I remember the essay in 1990 that David Sedaris wrote that some of this movie is based on. I laughed so hard I cut it out of the paper, Village Voice? New York Press? and mailed it to a friend back in Boston. Four years later I ended up working with Amy Sedaris (plays the secretary) at Comedy Central. Fun times.
kind of hypocritical how Peter Dinklage criticizes filmmakers who use little people just for comedy gags, but he himself has no problem taking roles where his height is the joke
On a December trip to NYC, I took all my kids on an “Elf Tour” and took them to all the famous spots in the movie. Rockefeller Center, the Worlds Best Cup of Coffee place, where he threw up after the revolving door scene and Central Park. They still talk about it.
You forgot to mention how Peter Billingsley who played Ralphie in A Christmas Story was in Elf. He was the Elf to whom Buddy called himself a "Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins" he also served as executive producer for Elf. I Also have to point out how one of the movie's Jon Favreau was known for prior to Elf was as D-Bob in Rudy one of the most iconic sports films ever made.
If they made the musical, and a special all based on this movie than that's a clear sign that it's good. I reckon they should have created merchandising toys etc...for it like the old days. It would have made a tonne more money. Plus I think Elf 2 would be amazing. There is still room for the plot to grow.. however now that James Caan has passed away.. not sure who could fill that role.

Its the tourists who act like that. We are either totally unfazed by their presence or unimpressed. Its Louie CK i see the most often. Just so u know ive never reacted except ive run back to verify it wS jack lsbourne and stephen king on the occassions ive seen them. And ove been in conversations w katie perry and blew pot smoke in heidi klums face once whaen she was exiting her car and crossing a red carpet. Im sure the paparazzi who were there haved pics of that someplace
They should have left that ice hockey bit in, it looks great. Brilliant film, only watched it recently for the first time and really glad I did. The bit with the jack in the box is awesome. I love the cat's face at the end, funny stuff =P Hope everyone's Christmas time is very lovely.
