Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

50 years ago my dad and uncles were always wound tight. grandpa was laid back. It is a right of passage to whip you into shape. In a few years you'll have a problem and he will ask if you have it handled that when you know he trusts you and respects your decisions. The bad part is then your also are responsible for the families success. Unfortunate that human best path to learning is thur pain. When I was 10-12 my uncle jumps up on the tractor and starts reading me the riot act. I said I could learn without him yelling at me. He grabs me by the scruff and tosses me in the field and yells NO YOU CANT. Your gonna hate it now but in 20 years it will mean more to you than you know.

@@deaddoll1361 Well depends what you call earned. If its at least 10 hours a day 24/7 365 until you find them slumped over on the back 9. There are many I have seen ground to dust but love of family and god keeps them moving with an occasional laugh and smile. Fact farming and ranching is a tough life even with fancy tractors. You have to raise kids with toughness of spirit in the very least. You suggest what exactly? that parents who are farmer and ranchers are shitty parents or do you believe they just beneath you? Sure I was raised to be tough but in retrospect when I left the rural life that toughness I humbly submit was the driving force that made me very successful all these years later.
@GarrethandPipa
@GarrethandPipa Год назад
@@flybywire5866 Maybe we were both right but for different reasons. He wasn't treating me like dirt. he was treating me like I was a fuckup. I was popping wheelies on the tractor when I should have been ploughing or planting. I really only remember the wheelies. If I were anyone else I would have been run off. When your business is either feast or famine and mostly just enough to get by. You can't have a whole bunch of screwing up. Everyone has to carry the load. Should I have been giving that responsibility? I don't know but in high school when my peers were doing harvest I was playing football. It was my uncle who volunteered so I could play. I hope I haven't presented him as a evil dictator I only remember getting a chewing out twice. He took the heat for me when he really shouldn't have a few times. He treated me like his own son. I expect the grace he gave was because he wanted me to have what responsibility denied him when he was young. My mentors could on occasion be strict but they weren't cruel. They taught me about honor and living up to your word. That working hard and doing a job well can make a man happy even when times are rough.

Even today at nearly 70 years old I still help my brother during planting and harvest, tillage and grain cart. His equipment is very similar to yours so it all looks familiar. As a therapist who spends all day hearing stories of bad parenting, you have no idea how healing it is to see the results of good parenting. Thank you to both of you for building strong and balanced and loved kids, and reducing my workload in 20 years! I never got to do farm equipment as a kid, but I think I first pushed dirt with a D9 (very large) bulldozer when I was 12, so I approve and slightly envy Rihannon getting to learn to drive at 10! In later years as a youth group instructor and working construction I always enjoyed teaching the kids skills that most people would say they were way too young for, welding to 11 year olds, driving my pickup to 8 year olds, etc, but it activates different parts of their brains and gives them confidence later in life. And whenever I am operating construction equipment and I see the kid watching intently, when possible I invite the parents to bring them over and at least sit in the seat, maybe even move the levers if it's safe, because that's what got me started! Lol But thank you Zach and Becky for bringing some hope and light back into the world, especially after the strip tiller fiasco! ;) lol

This episode brought two things to mind. First a song written by Allen Jackson remembering his youth and his kids when “ Daddy let me drive…” The impact that had on his confidence and his and their future. Great song! Second is my own personal experience when Dad said get in the truck and drive. In your case and the other examples Dads took time to train, mentor and love their kids. The world would be so much better if this was done more often. This training is the next step on what already has been years of dedicated work by parents. Enjoy your video games next fall! God Bless all of you (including Josh).

This is the true essence of family farming. There will be those out there who were never part of family farming that will be horrified at this. But for those of us who grew up in or participated in family farming, this is a perfect example of getting the kids involved early and developing responsibility and skills!

Cool to see the kids out there . Brings back some memories. When I was 13 my dad had a heart attack and my mom and I took the crop off . Lot of hours sitting out there , 830 jd tractor, 96 combine , 1500 acres . I can still remember the frost on the combine pickup, keeping one set of mitts under my butt warming up while I wore one pair . My mom would keep a pair over the defroster of the truck and trade me every round . Her and I were always closer after that fall
