Great video! All aspiring au pairs need to watch this. I did a year in The Netherlands a few years ago and was the host parents bedroom not across from mine!!?!? The pits 🫣😭 so that’s a great question to ask. I know this video was for 10 questions but another thing to ask is if the family expects you to have meals with them and go on vacation with them to work. Oh and also how they feel about drinking and smoking in general, even if you don’t

Yes good questions too! Although I honestly wouldn’t ask about alcohol and smoking. That also sounds like a red flag. Unless if they ask you that. But no one necessarily wants a smoker around their kids or someone concerned about alcohol to the point where they want to ask about the families thoughts you know?

@@KaraboMareka absolutely, yes. Maybe wait until they bring it up because giving up smoking for example would be a deal breaker for some au pairs, and vice versa x

@@laurenphillips2785 lol at this point the Au Pairs really don’t have a choice but to be discrete about it. Otherwise their chances of finding a host family might be close to 0. I know Au Pairs who lied and said they don’t smoke and do it secretly behind the host family or they get caught and go straight into rematch. So I’d advice them to try take a break while applying. If they can’t you better be good at hiding your smoking habits during your Au pair term 😩

Hi Karabo, in terms of matching with a family, say now you get an interview with your first family but are also waiting to interview more families, how does that work? Do you continue skyping with the first family and let them know you also still talking to other families? Also totally weird question but how did you address the host moms and dad when interviewing, did you call them by their first names or like Mr and Mrs lol

You can interview as many families as you want. I think you’re allowed up to 3 families a time. Be open and transparent and tell them you’re talking to other families too No need to be formal as well … calling them by their names is okay

Hi Karabo, 11 months later and I just came across this video. Thank you so so much for sharing!! I’m currently working in marketing but have decided to take the au pairing route. Do you think or know whether there are any chances of getting a job opportunity after au pairing? Or how does it work?

That’s a very long discussion sis… it’s not easy getting a job here. Green card or work permit would be needed which aren’t easy to get.

Yeah they shouldn't ask how much they'll get paid but if you're with Aupaircare the amount has changed, you get paid $215 now

Some host parents are very very nice. When I matched with my last family they offered me $300 a week because they felt having 2 infants was a lot of work. So families can be generous shame

Hey sis! Unfortunately it’s taking months now and others have been waiting for like a year! After Covid things pretty much changed and slowed down. There’s also so many Au pair applicants now compared to the number of families available 😩😩 so you’re not alone, I receive this question everyday 🥹
