Snake plants are also known as mother's in law tongue, sansiveria and it's been reclassified as Dracenea.
Snake plants are often sold as low maintenance, drought tolerant and low light plants. The perfect plant for the set and forget gardener.
Snake plants , like all plants will show you signs of destress. Early intervention will allow your plant to thrive. Today's video l will explain all the signs that indicate a sick snake plant and what to do about it.
Let's answer the elephant question in the room. Do Snake plants thrive in low light?
Snake plants can tolerate low light but no, they don't thrive in low light. If there is not enough light this beauty will become stagnant and you will notice little to no growth. This includes the leaves not growing wider and no new leaves growing. If there is growth in the leaves the leaves will tend to be thin and leggy as the plant tries to seek more light.
As humans, most people don't like to sit in a dark and dingy corner of the home. Same as Snake plants. Setting this plant it in a dark corner means is not getting what it actually wants. Snake plants originate from Africa where they receive lots of sunlight and even direct sunlight. This plant is a sun loving plant not a low light plant. Placing the snake plant in your home or outside where it can receives the most sunlight possible is the best to allow the plant to capture enough sunlight to grow bushy.
Droopy/CurledLeaves
If you have one or two leaves drooping it's usually it can that the snake plant doesn't have enough of a root system to supply water to the leaves. This can sometimes occur after repotting when too many of the roots have been disturbed or damaged. Not to worry just give your plant time to establish more roots.
If multiple leaves are droopy then it's the first sign of over watering your plant. Over watering is a snake plants arch enemy. They like to be completely dry , like bone dry between watering. They also like a well draining soil mixture so the soil days fairly quickly and it's roots doesn't sit in moist soil for too long.
A well draining soil mixture l use is 50% cactus soil and 50% potting mix. I add in about a few pieces like
Snake plants are one of the best plants for gardeners who are underwaters. The leaves hold alot of water in them allowing them to not require water for a long time and they do they the soil to completely dry between watering.
This lovely beauty likes well draining soil and doesn't like their roots to stay soggy for long time otherwise this can cause root rot. The well draining soil mixture l use is 50% potting mixt, 50% cactus mix and l throw in a few pieces of Horticultural charcoal to increase drainage and help reduce bacteria and fungus in the soil as Horticultural charcoal cleans the water. I water mine once every 3 weeks in spring and summer and once a month in winter. I do this as l have been growing snake plants for many years and learnt and become use to my plants needs. How often you water your snake plant depends on the size of the plant, pot size, pot type, soil mixture and home and outdoor conditions. If your new to growing this beauty the check the soil is completely dry before watering. Over time you will learn and become use to your plants needs without even having to
