This is a Monstera Standleyana. Unlike is relative Monstera Deliciosa it's a little more temperamental and slower to propagate. Today l'm going to show easier way l propagate this beauty.
Firstly let's find some aerial root. You might be thinking, what the heck is a aerial root. Aerial roots are roots the grow on the vinning stem of a monstera Standleyana rater the roots that grow underneath the soil/ growing medium. In the tropical rainforest where Monstera grow these aerial grows will grow and attach the plant to nearby trees so it can grow upwards to receive more sunlight.
Ariel roots look like little brown bumps on the stem. We want these as it will make propagation faster. The aerial roots will activate and new roots will grow and the will becoming the new roots for the plant.
If your Standleyana doesn't have aerial roots, no to worry you can still propagate your Monstera. It will just take a little more time and patience for the new roots to grow.
Secondly we want to locate the nodes. You might be thinking, Minh what the heck are nodes? Nodes are where new leaves and new roots grow out from. The easiest way to find a node is to look at the stem where leaves are growing from that is the location of the node. If the stem doesn't have many leaves and you see brown area that circulates around the stem, that's a node as well.
The best cutting is a stem cutting with aerial roots and 2- 3 nodes and 3-4 mature leaves. Aerial roots will grow faster then a cutting with no roots. 2-3 nodes is good just in case one node dies there is 1-2 spare nodes that can activate. Mature leaves can can capture sunlight better and thus produce more energy for the cutting to grow roots Time immature leaves that are still developing.
The growing medium l'm using is moist sphagnum Moss. I have tried water propagation and directly into soil before but haven't been successful. I haven't tried leca yet and formyself l find Sphagnum Moss works the best for me. I find water propagation the cuttings then to rot and also if roots grow they grow water roots that are use to having easy access to water. Once these cutting are transferred into the soil it is harder to acclimate the plant as soil is drier and harder for water rooted cutting to adapt. Using Sphagnum moss avoids water roots from growing and normal roots which are tougher and easier to adapt to soil.
