Pete I think the hardest thing about fitting a completely new beginner (someone who has virtually no golfing experience) is the fact that they do not have typical strike patterns on the face. I usually suggest buying a cheap hand me down set to try and get a feel for striking the ball before getting a fitting myself, a former master club fitter.
@bgreenup4311
@bgreenup4311 Год назад
I’m just getting into golf. Got a hand me down set that were custom for a 6’3” big guy and I’m like 5” shorter and not a big guy. They are also extra stiff flex. I was told I need fitting because it’s doing me no good learning on things that are not comparable to my body style or swing. What do I do?
@joshlynch5676
@joshlynch5676 Год назад
@@bgreenup4311 If the clubs are longer than standard you can just have them cut down by a technician to standard lengths. You still probably don't need to be fit, I would just have your clubs cut to normal lengths for you if they are extended.

@@bgreenup4311yeah it just sounds like you got unlucky. I’ve had a pair of hand me downs for like 9 years now and their still going strong haha I just now considered buying/getting fitted for another set the beginning of this season. I’d say just do what he said and find a technician that can shave the club down for your height

I want to give golf another shot after I tried it as a teenager 15 years ago. I don't like the idea of buying multiple sets of clubs to suit my experience level. Do you think it might work buying some mid-level or even pro-level clubs as beginner, even though it'll take more time/lessons to learn the craft? Learning piano as a young adult, starting with a cheaper instrument and then upgrading to a top-end instrument, I really struggled with habits/techniques that worked on the lower model but don't on the pro. I'd rather start with the harder model and develop the correct technique from the very start
@yokiweyy4770
@yokiweyy4770 Год назад
@@fnherzog i have the same doubt. i started this group class a couple of months ago, and i'm still totally clueless about this game. i have this doubt because i experienced it with playing drums. at first i always bought cheap cymbals because i didn't want to spend too much money, and they always broke sooner or later. then i bought this more expensive cymbal almost 10 years ago and it's still there, like it's indestructible. so maybe i think i'd lean towards something more mid quality if and when i'll buy my first clubs. not something extremely expensive, but also not something cheap with a horrible quality

A few years ago I was custom fit for some new Mizuno irons and they really helped bring my game on, gave me confidence. I also took the time to understand what worked with them, the set up, and when it was time for a change I could do a bit of research and look for second hand that would suit me. I have had a set of second hand callaway maverick pro irons in the bag for a couple of years now and I love them!

Don't care about ego. I buy what I think is pretty and what I like looking at. It's my money, and I'll spend it on exactly what I want. REGARDLESS of what anybody says or recommends. Which is why I bought a full set of the PING Blueprint irons. 2-PW. Literally the smallest blades on the market right now. An oh so beautiful to look at!

I still play my Ping Eye2 BeCu 3-LW purchased new in 1986 and they still do the job. New grips when needed and still get comments on these. Woods and hybrids are currently G30 which were purchased used over the last few years. At 71 years old, I can't really justify new clubs since other than a lose of distance, a solid strike produces a quality shot.

I bought a whole set of used Ping Eye2 irons off of Ebay last June after taking up the game last April. The whole set cost about $200, and they have been just perfect for me as I learn the game. My Dad (still playing at the age of 84) still uses a set of Ping irons from around that time, and I knew I wanted Ping irons from hitting with his cubs. Now that I am getting my ball striking down and swinging more consistently (after about 20 lessons with a pro and a lot of practice), I am going to invest in a custom set of Ping 710s (when they become available again - supposedly in April).

Played the Wilson Ci7 irons for years. Just upgraded to Mizuno JPX 800 Pro (yes I know they are 10 years old) and the feeling of the forged vs cast is amazing. I’m not a good enough ball striker for blades but a little better than the game improvement level too. I think the Mizunos are what I need as a mid-handicapper. Just got them so time will tell. I play the TaylorMade r9 TP Irons since 2010 and I still love them and they perform superb. In terms of feel and performance I haven't found anything else that I like that much. And they also are traditional lofted, what I do prefer most. So many modern irons are strong lofted and when you find something traditional it's mostly the players irons with less forgiveness. So, no point to switch to newer ones, just make sure that you care about your stuff, clean them and from time to time replace the grips.

I kept the Putter of course and the 5 wood, 3 wood & a nice Taylor made 54 degree wedge.I bought the LCG's new for about 700$ fitted at golf town. LCG MEANING: Low Center of Gravity (LCG) creates shots that get airborne easily • Trajectory programmed for high flight and soft landings , they have extra metal on the back side near the toe of the irons wight help with miss hits.

Great content, as always!! Got fitted for Mizuno JPX 850 forged about 7 years ago, and absolutely love them. Fitting made a HUGE difference. One recommendation I would make to most amateur golfers such as myself, if you invest the $ in forged clubs, spend the $ on a good set of head covers. It wil certainly pay dividends in ensuring your clubs stay pristine, avoiding the denting and scuffing from bag clatter. It may not seem the “cool” thing to do, your clubs will last far longer, saving you $ from having to purchase new ones when yours look beat up. Great video Pete!!!

Recently fitted for the new Cleveland XLs… needed a lighter easier club to hit after age/injury made my heavy shafted AP2s a struggle to launch. It’s made my iron play so much better again. Adding more hybrids has helped as well. It was hard to go from the sexy clubs I used to be able to play to chunky clubs and hybrids, but performance rules. To be fair I’m not as sexy as I used to be either so I guess it’s apt.

In the last year or two I'm just starting to get to the point in my game where I do believe that new and better clubs will help me tremendously. My handicap is down to 14. I just got fit for a new putter and am waiting for that to come in the mail. I've spent very little on clubs before that purchase. Since I started whacking golf balls around in my back yard, I've had a set of Ram irons (4-9) that have treated me so well, but have to be well over 15 years old at this point. Playing sporadically through high school and college and now to the last two seasons where I have played 50+ rounds in back to back years, I know my gaps from one club to the next. I have a consistent shot shape. Switching my irons scares me so much! I know I want something that will last long and give me super similar distances and gaps from my trusty Ram irons.

I don't even have to hand over funds, the whole magic of this method happens right in your connected account. Beats everything I've been doing prior to this.

Recently picked up a gently used set of 2022 Cobra ForgeTec One Length Irons. As someone who has historically struggled with long irons, I've found them to promote consistency while still being able to move the ball position around to change trajectory, shot shape, etc. They benefit me as a low handicapper but now I'm a firm believer that the concept could definitely benefit anyone.

I started out with a Wilson starter set, served me well the first 2 months. I am limited in my swing due to bad shoulder injury, bought a set of Cobra King F8 single length shafts second hand for a bargain last week, been hitting my irons 25 yards further consistently now. Esp PW, 9 and 8 are even 35 yards better.

i upgraded about 2 years ago to a set (5-sw) of Benross delta irons. they were an ex demo (or whatever the right phrase is) set for about £150. they are working pretty well for me, Handicap is slowly moving in the right directiona nd i've won a couple of socail comps with them. lots of my mates have sppent big bucks on fittings and "better" irons but these are looking top notch for me.

Of course I’m now a senior so I went to a local 2nd hand clubs store where I bought a set of Taylormade Stealths from 2022. 3,4,5 hybrids and 6 thru SW irons all with senior shafts…they are by far the easiest clubs I’ve hit..it’s got me looking forward to getting on the course again…

Bought a set of PXG 0311 irons about 6 years ago. Other than changing grips on a regular basis, last year got new shafts fitted after having a fitting session. Was put into the same make of shafts and stiffness but am now playing 110g shafts. At the time of buying the original irons they were expensive but as I have not changed every 2 - 3 years as I usually do, they have been a great investment

Honma TW 747P. I'm a 17 handicap and I hit these so well. Due to the stronger loft I've gained some extra distance. I also wanted to mention I'm 67 and I hit my 8 iron 160 yds. The reason for my higher handicap is mostly focus and consistency. I love these clubs.

One of the best investments I have made so far is a Ping 3 crossover driving iron that I picked up used on Ebay for $75. I have only been playing for about a year, and have struggled to hit driver consistently. The 3 crossover is really nice off the tee, with consistent straight drives around `175 yards or so. I will take this over 200 yard drives with my driver that spray everywhere. This way, I can still enjoy my rounds, while still working on driver at the range.

I started golfing last year, invested a lot of time and energy. Started with 2009 tour preferreds and moved on to buy a set of 620 cb irons. Went to the simulator and after about 20 shots each to get the hang of them, I started hitting straight and the feel of a good hit is amazing. Everyone told me to stay away from them and go with t300 or whatever because they’re more forgiving but the way I see it. I don’t want to hit straight and clear distance on a miss hit, I want to know my faults and improve my game with better more solid strikes. It has absolutely nothing to do with my ego, I have no “fear” of blades or cb irons. I just have the motivation to learn through them. I’m looking forward to this season. I have someone that wants to trade me my titleist 620 cb 4-P for his apex mb irons 3-P… and I’m contemplating it lol.

I am in the same camp as you. I want to know if I miss hit a club. I started playing with blades and always believed that if you can hit blades then you will become a better player. If you really want to improve your long iron game, learn to hit a 2 iron. Today I still carry a 3 iron and its one of my favourite club, My Shot Scope p-average distance for it is 225 yards and that is at age 60

I started playing golf in July 2020, after borrowing clubs I wanted my own so bought, via a social media site, possibly 3rd hand Wilson x31’s due to availability and cost - £40 with bag and pull trolley. I then bought packages of lessons and eventually allowed my self to replace the Wilson clubs. I set myself a budget of £60 per club and used 2nd hand golf clubs for driver,hybrid and woods, using advice from my coach and making sure I checked reviews from 2017/2018, got myself some adjustable clubs to go with me on my next golfing journey. This year, I treated myself to a set of mizuno irons 2018 hot metal which I lengthened and am now having to adjust to the greater distance that these clubs and my improved swing have given me.. By far though, I value the lessons and the coach player relationship I have, regular lessons mean I can show my stats from arccos and what I see and target the session that I take to the range that see results on the course. Lessons and fitting I think are under valued both in cost and time. 4 sessions a year will improve your game no end compared to no lessons. Great video.

Great video Pete I have a set of AP1 irons which I brought second hand 5 years ago. I like them and given the amount of golf I play they are as good as I can expect.
