Started playing 2 months ago. Looked at several “starter sets” online and in person. Ended up buying a used set of Strata’s and was pretty happy with the set as a whole. Definitely a good enough set to learn the fundamentals of the game before I move up to a new set.

My dad is a great golfer. You could give him the most ancient beat up thrift store clubs, and he could beat most people at a round. If you are just learning, spend the money on lessons, ranges, and rounds at a quiet course, not clubs. This guy gives great advice.

Anything that gets people out there enjoying the game is good in my book. You can always upgrade later once you get more experience or try out a friend's driver that gives you better distance, or you find a deal on someone selling used clubs because they got a new set. Enjoying the game doesn't have to cost a small fortune especially when you are just starting out.

When you can buy a whole set for the cost of one “good” driver. Yes, it’s absolutely worth it. Most people just need something that they can go out and have fun with. Very few people need tour level power, speed, and accuracy. If you can get a low handicap with a cheap set, you’re also a better golfer than somebody who achieves the same thing with an expensive set.

Great video. I started with the strata and have been slowly upgrading. But not even a year into owning the set I broke the 3 wood and banged up the driver. I’d be really upset if I had spent $3k on a set and did that and probably would of quit. Also I find that one brand doesn’t always suit my liking. So I mix and match what I like.

Absolutely agree with the final points here, I bought a relatively cheap set, Macgregor DCT 2000, starting off your going to top balls and even hit the ground before the ball! I broke my 3 wood this way. Definitely worth using a cheaper or starter set when learning the game, the clubs work and when you mess up and damage one its not a big of a deal, downside is replacing that one club, usually I buy a branded one.

We were out the door each with a complete set of clubs and a glove for $1150 including tax. I'm turning 29 and just getting back into it, and I had a tough time making a decision on which clubs to buy over the weekend. Dick's had a Cobra set for 899, and I almost bought them but it didn't make sense. I decided on the Strata 16 piece tour set for 539 online. There are a few different Strata sets, the tour are the best. I've been looking for a solid review on them and haven't been able to find one. It would be really cool if you could do a review on the tour set. It really seems like a great deal for the money. Awesome video!

Finally!! I've been asking these questions (what actually makes these clubs different, given the price - especially the irons) for a few months, and this is best answer I've seen. Thank you. What a clear description. Now, I don't want to put you in an awkward position, but I've heard some club makers (Maltby, Gigagolf) indicate that their stuff is as good as the OEMs, but since they don't charge for advertising or sponsorship, they can offer an iron set for around $150. Reading about the Maltby clubs, it looks like they put a lot of technology into it (silicon cushion, multiple pieces, variable face technology, perimeter weighting, etc.). Do you think someone like Maltby can produce a set of clubs for $150 that approaches the quality of an $800 set?
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 3 года назад
I have bought numerous component heads over the years and some are definitely better than others. The Maltby heads I have bought have been of a quality comparable to the OEMs. I think it's fair to say that they run a couple cycles behind the OEMs as far as the latest tech but the worthwhile technology seems to make it into their heads within a year or so. I have some of the forged heads (more classic design and tech) and they are beautiful. I think if you are okay not having Callaway, Taylormade, etc stamped on your clubs, you can be just as happy with the Maltby stuff. And it's all a la carte so you can pick whatever shaft and grip you want to build and not pay extra up charges.

@@EFGMC thanks. BTW, I got the Strata 12 piece set 2 years ago for $159!! They have been wonderful, but as I improve, it’s time to upgrade the irons. Got used eBay driver (Razr Fit), 3w (TM Aeroburner), and 3/5 hybrids (TM Rescue) for really cheap. But those clubs are definitely better than the Stratas, so I assume newer irons will perform better. Great channel.

My clubs are 25 years old and were fairly cheap when I got them. I assume new irons would be more forgiving and provide better performance overall? Would you say I would get more distance with new clubs and if so about how much? I was thinking about an upgrade to Callaway Mavriks or the Sim2s.
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 3 года назад
I would guess that you should see a noticeable difference with clubs that old. Between stronger lofts, hotter faces, and lighter shafts, you should see a pretty good jump in distance once you get used to them. Either of those listed are great clubs.

@EFGMC
@EFGMC Год назад
The shorter irons probably won't be much different. The longer clubs will be harder to hit because they are heavier, and don't offer any help getting the ball up in the air. Might want to just pick up a couple hybrids or utility irons to cover the longer distances and start out with the Hogan's until your swing gets grooved.

I take my friends unwanted clubs and find old clubs at second hand stores. Until I can really play constantly, I am going to wait on buying high costing clubs.

I like that idea. Not to mention there are plenty of great performing old clubs to be found.

I have an 18* King Cobra 5 wood from the early 2000's and its my go to club! Smaller head with rails on it so it's easy to hit off the fairway and great in the rough, pretty much versatile anywhere, and no adjustment needed so it's good from the get-go. It hits the ball straight with the perfect amount of loft for distance, and is reliable for solid hits everytime, unlike the occasional bad hit with my newer Cobra 3 wood. Maybe it doesn't carry as far as some newer 5 woods, but its accurate, and I'll take accuracy over a few extra yards anyday. So I disagree with the common myth that you need new clubs every 5 to 6 years, as long as it's in decent condition and the grooves aren't worn out, it's still just as playable.

My take is that it depends on what is your limiting factor. If you are a beginner, and your limiting factor is poor technique, then getting an expensive set of irons won't do you much. If you are already an intermediate player, and your limiting factor are the clubs (weight distribution, forgiveness, distance etc.), then perhaps its time to move on from these clubs.

For context, started learning with the Strata set. It's been 1.5 years, and my technique has gotten a lot better (even though not quite consistent), and thinking of upgrading soon. They served me really really well, and I still love the feel of them. (Except the driver and hybrid, those are horrible)

Sorry if I accidentally said that in the video. You are correct. Callaway owns the Strata name after they bought Top Flite years back. Sold Top Flite, but kept Strata name.

From what I've seen/heard irons will be passable, but the woods/top end of the bag will be meh.
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 3 года назад
That is probably fair with most of these sets. The carbon fiber shafts will be of low quality, and there won't be much tech if any in the heads. That being said, for a beginner who is likely to beat those clubs up pretty good as they learn, it's probably what they need. They would be the first thing to upgrade though as someone improves.

Callaway did own Top Flite. They sold it to Dicks Sporting Goods about 5 to 8 years ago. Callaway did however keep the Strata brand, which is what they use for their starter sets.

What makes no sense is the cost of blades. Except for the grooves, the technology, lofts, lies and one piece construction haven't changed in 70 years, yet are often the most expensive club in any given line up.

get a beginners set and you too can lose your golf balls all day long, they will promise you control and all kinds of stuff, but they will all suck, and you will be frustrated you will not enjoy the game lol
@Handletaken4

Buy the set, go take lessons, get some distance balls, find out how far you hit a 5i in the air and multiply that by 36 (150x36=5400) and play those tees! Do not let your friends drag you back to the tips (morons)! Golf is a game of strategy, it is not a long-drive exercise in futility. I shoot 65-69 from 5400. I shoot 70-76 from 5900 and 76-95 from 6700. Go shoot par from 5400 before moving back. I hit a modern 5i about 178
