I am so lucky as I live 20 miles south of Boston and the MFA is a true treasure. It is just so amazing to have a museum that considers quilts as an art form in my back yard. And the Harriet Powers quilt is nothing short of AMAZING.❤

Gwen Marston is one of my heroes in quilting (Freddy Moran too) But the book Liberated Quiltmaking by Gwen Marston really kicked me into finding my "wild piecing" style. I saw an interview with Freddy, when she was making faces, and I have made lots of face quilts that are mounted on canvas. They are so fun. Once upon a time, I took a little class on improv pineapple blocks. I dove deep into that and made a number of "weird" pineapple blocks, with the intention of making an entire quilt from them. Now they show up randomly in my wild mix quilts.

Hi Amy! Great to see you again and I hope you’re feeling like a kid again!! I love love love quilt books too!! I had the great fortune to find someone in a local penny saver magazine, who was getting rid of everything from her quilting journey. I am the proud owner of Quilt books from the 60s 70s and 80s. I have looked at these books and poured over the pages for the last five years and I love every page!! They definitely bring inspiration ….. as do you! Nice to see you spark again!!

I had the great honor and blessing of participating in a 3-day retreat with Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran. Gwen was a delight! And funny - every morning she would share a joke before we started sewing. Those 3 days changed my quilting life. They showed me that Yes, I can do that, Yes, let’s try that, Yes, use that color. Gwen’s motto was if it’s too short, add to, and if it’s too long, cut it off. Freddy would say, when you think you have too much color - ADD MORE COLOR. I am a totally different quilter today and have made several “liberated” quilts. Before the class we got a list of “parts” to make and bring (you’ll know what I mean since you have both of their books😉) and the first day of the class, after introductions, Gwen said, “Okay, start”! I was flummoxed - start what? Start how? But that is the wonderful thing about their style, just start, you don’t need a pattern or to be told by someone else what to make and how you should make it. My husband is always thrilled with my liberated quilts - he knows I am finally FREE as a quilter to make what my heart desires.

I recently went to an estate sale where I purchased a banker’s box full of quilting and crocheting books for $5. I was so excited I couldn’t pay for it fast enough! I’ve spent hours browsing through them for ideas and have begun a list of possible projects! Now, to get going and make them a reality! I still have more books to browse! So many things to do and so little time to get them done!❤️

Thanks Amy! I just spent less than $10 on a used "Quilts, A Living Tradition" and now have "The Dressmakers of Auschwitz" on my tablet. For some reason, I've been drawn to stories about Auschwitz since my high school years in the mid-late 70s. Hope you are mending well, and thanks again for a different take on quilting inspirations!

I read The Dressmakers of Auschwitz a few months ago ... humbling and thought provoking on so many levels and a testament to finding common threads (pun not intended) in our lives with those around us.

Thank you for reminding me of Gwen and Freddy! They both inspired me to become a quilter back in the early nineties. All those gorgeous bright colors and somewhat lax quilty rules made me believe that I could do it. I would love to recommend Ellen Anne Eddy's Thread Magic. Her work is amazing and the book is chocked FULL of beautiful writing and poignant life lessons. You can read my review over on Goodreads. Nice to see you back and looking so well. I read the Dressmakers of Auschwitz when it first came out, it’s an excellent book showing courage, compassion, love, kindness and strength in the midst of unmistakable horrors.

I enjoy your book reviews, I went right to my library app and put a hold on several of the books you mentioned, I do own the Freddie and Gwen books and I think I have the Jean Ray Laury as well. I am surprised by how many " Modern" quilters (yeah I get it, don't vibe with labels) have not heard of Nancy Crow! She's a icon! If you haven't seen it you should check out a fab improve book called Cultural Fusion Quilts by Sujata Shah. Sujata is originally from India and her patterns reflect the rich textile history of that country.

When I was in high school I found “The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics Vol. 1&2” ~Alan Aldridge at my local library and it greatly inspired my developing art style. Then several years ago I found “Inspired by the Beatles: An Art Quilt Challenge” ~Donna Desoto and it completed my world! These both I highly recommend!

I, too, watched Karen's You Tube Interview on "The Dressmakers of Auschwitz" and a trip to the library the very next day to read this haunting book. Excellent, heart felt, learning, and life changing. As I sew, quilt, and make stitching mistakes, I often think, "What if my very survival depended on my stitches?" I am lucky. .

I love books. However, I don't have room for every book I want. I am weeding my book collection again. I gave away a book yesterday. It has become hard to find places to give my books to. The recycle center doesn't want them anymore. Most consignment shops don't carry many anymore. The second hand shops may take them, if they have room. Even the Public Library doesn't want them if they are over two years old.

I love dc, though its been a hot min since I was there.... Bus Boyes and Poets is a great place to eat ... There are several = the original is on 7th NW between U and V 😁
