@Daniel Hostetler Agreed.. There's a big difference between ultra-light and ultralight. Too bad the script writer hasn't a clue what Part 103 is, because clarification helps. None of these aircraft meet US FAA FAR Part 103. The last one, the Mosquito, stripped down and with piston power plant does meet that regulation.. So, only one 'ultralight' out of 10 'ultra-light' helos. Don't know about you but I don't like being mislead.. And those who don't know are now armed with mis-information. Well, as the name applies.. this vid goes Beyond Facts.

As a professional quality Engineer, one the primary job function from the prototype design to the finished product is to cut cost while maintaining or exceeding the quality and safety expectations/requirements. Even Engineers in the space program have to cut cost, and the business is generally awarded to the suppliers that can manifest the establishments requirements/ specifications at the lowest cost among a few other things.

I loved this video and after seeing the helisport ch-77 I though "I can afford a helicopter" so I started looking for one to buy. First off, the aircraft this video shows is not the charlie, it's the ranabot. And it's not $66,500. It's like $150,000 base price with zero options or avionics. Accuracy is lacking.

You are allowed to fly a helo as long as it is home built or classified as experimental

Get into RC helis, and/or atleast a decent sim. Fact: most RC pilots can easily translate their control skills and fly scale (fixed wing or rotorcraft), but most licensed pilots have issues flying remote. Its all about being able to maintain orientation and "putting yourself into" that tiny cockpit in your mind's eye.

Nice video ! It gives a good understanding on how the market is for the cheapest helicopters available... I just wish we had a more consistent data structure approach.. for instances we know the maxim hight some heli can reach but for some others we don't.. seeing the same data for all of them would have been great :) ( Hight, autonomy, speed, weather capability and price ).

That Robinson 22 and even the 44 are great learning airframes and if you ever looked at flying lessons you usually see these as part of the fleet, great little helicopters. One day I’d love to fly them just for fun.

@@Justforfun-ek7et The Guimbal Cabri G2 would be regarded as the best trainer now. A large part of the R22 and R44 being dangerous is the lack of experience by pilots, but also the type of rotor system allows collision between the rotor and airframe.

@@chippyjohn1 A lot of that issue was solved by SFAR. mainly a training issue pertaining to the two blade teetering rotor. But any two blade helicopter or more blades will be deadly if you get negative g's on the helicopter.

Just get a powered parachute or paramotor and fly when and wherever you want within safe altitudes, it's cheap and affordable to anyone and you only need a short course to master. You can store it in your backyard, takeoff and enjoy your early mornings

If you really want the cheapest way to fly - look away from helicopters, towards motor-driven paga-gliders, and, perhaps, experimental airplanes. Way cheaper to buy, to maintain. Arguably safer, too.

If they could rig a ballistic chute like they have on some ultralight aircraft and small private planes then I would gladly fly the mosquito. Having had to pop a ballistic chute on my beaver ultralight on floats after a elevator cable failure I am a firm believer in chutes . It saved my life and the aircraft. The only damage was to the float struts .

As an apprentice who used to work on R22 and R44, these choppers are not cheap to maintain. An engine overhaul will cost you around 20K with 2600 flying hours. Every 50 hours you need to replace 6 quarts of oil and filter. Every 100 hours you need to check spark plugs not to mention the tail rotors gears box need some real experience on them and the installation could go wrong every easily. At 2013, R22 had problem with their fuel tank and i don’t remember whether the new service bulletin fixed it or not. I love airplane, but just not very confident to buy myself a chopper, if I could afford one, I will go for fix-wings.

@@767dag for engine overhaul, you need a certified workshop which will cost an arm and leg. Fixed wing is my choice.

if you don’t need License to fly at its qualified as experimental. Therefore you can do the engine work yourself

@@767dag what I learn at school is: all the airplanes which can legally fly are under the local aviation authority regulations. E.g. USA is federal aviation administration, in EU is EASA. You could do all the maintenance by yourself in a certified place (not like changing your spark plugs outside the auto zone, doing the same to an aircraft could cause it grounded)but still need someone to sign it off.

The Heli-sport you feature at 6:42 is the Ranabot model, not the Charlie. Big price difference as the Ranabot is $212K US.

That's because every one who had one ,sooner or later died in them. Best bang for your buck is a Safari 400, or a Safari 500. Check it out. AND IF YOUR INTERESTED.. @@TransferAir To answer you question. The Guimbal appears to be a nice bird. A little pricey. I would like to stay close to the supply chain and support group. ALSO MAY be hard to find someone to instruct you in one to get ones ticket punched. As for the Mini 500, I've not followed her for sometime, after it leaked of all deaths. Due to the use of every day hardware from the 5 and dime store. Instead of the real Aviation certified supply chain. As well as BAD best practices in Aviation. A lot of since less lost life. Over gread $$$ or stupidly. Sad.

yeah but the maintenance and operating costs must be sky high . When you look at the cost of acquisition, the fixed cost of ownership, and operating costs, a helicopter like mine costs a heck of a lot more than the $185.10 per hour Robinson estimates. I can tell you exactly how much I spent on insurance, fuel, oil, maintenance, and repairs over the past 6 years: $208,000. Divide that by the 1100 hours I flew during that period and you get $200 per hour. Now add in the reserve for the overhaul that is required at 2,200 hours - roughly $100 per hour. So, after 6 years of operations, I’m seeing an average hourly cost of $300 per hour - not Robinson’s rosy $185.

Thank you for your video. I'm reading comments, and I wonder : what's wrong with the word 'Aircraft'? A helicopter is an aircraft! NASA writes "A helicopter is a type of aircraft. It uses rotating, or spinning, wings called blades to fly. Rotating blades, or a rotor, let helicopters do things airplanes cannot."

Princessuh... you are correct. Anything that flies is considered an aircraft... even RC Models and Quadcopters (aka drones). Then there are categories. Aircraft with motors and wings are called AIRPLANES, Aircraft with wings and no motor are called GLIDERS, Aircraft with rotors are called ROTORCRAFT, That applies to Helicopters and gyroplanes. Aircraft with bulbous bags of helium and engines (think Blimp) are called POWERED LIFT CRAFT, Aircraft with bulbous bags of hot air (think balloons) are LIGHTER THAN AIR craft. So you have it right. The copters are AIRCRAFT... but they are not AIRPLANES. That is probably what prompted someone's comment that your are questioning.

With $400k still can buy either a Bell or Hughes in that price range , a proven design and large availability of parts around the world. There are not reason in the world to buy a 2 seater helicopter from a brand new manufacturer for that kind of money .

If the max weight for an ultralight is 254 pounds, how does the Robinson 22 fit into the category being over 800lbs? It’s over for max fuel capacity also? I’ve been Google searching this for two days and can’t find anything close to an answer.
