FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF TEXAS, AMERICA: as a Scottish person who's been fascinated by America - the USA - since childhood, it was so amazing to be invited by the US Embassy to the UK for my first ever visit. SUBSCRIBE to my channel for more Scottish reactions: / @shaunvlog
It's awesome to see so many people from America who celebrate their Scottish and Irish ancestry so keenly, and come on to RU-vid to seek out people celebrating these cultural nuances. You only have to look at the success of the Try channel or Facts channel to see how people love seeing Irish People trying American things for example.
I feel sad that, for our part, so few in Scotland celebrate this amazing connection between Scotland and America, and I want to change that. So to start, here are 10 of my first impressions of TEXAS.

Surprising to most though - we hardly ever have to use 'em. They're meant for defense. It sounds kinda crazy to people who don't feel that way about guns, but the best way to stop a crazy shooter at a concert or event is for prepared and well-trained citizens to stop them, as they don't have to wait for the police to show up. Texas is big. Police have a ways to go sometimes and a lot of people can be hurt or killed fast if the shooter is the only one packing. Personally, I feel the most safe at a concert with a seasoned grey hair with a gun in their holster scanning the room around me.

As a Texan who spent a couple of weeks in Scotland, I have to say that I, too, felt a kinship between myself and the Scots with whom my wife and I interacted. As with Texas, there seems to be a great deal of pride associated with being Scottish, and the attitude towards that pride is very similar; it is kind of a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement that you're from and/or live in a place that's a bit more special than most people perceive it to be. It's very hard to describe, but it is absolutely palpable and 100% unapologetic. My wife and I are both anxious to get back to Scotland as soon as possible so that we can continue exploring the wonderful place that we found it to be.

@@hamilt55467 Self-loathing much? American agriculture and animal husbandry has transformed the world's food supply. One of the biggest problems of the world, through huge amounts on history has been starvation. We shoved the pendulum the other direction. Yep, we pushed a bit too far and now we have too much food. We overeat. Big f*cking deal! We'll figure it out, eventually. Show a little gratitude. You will (most likely) live three times longer than most of past humanity and you may die of a problem of "too much" maybe diabetes or some such. When you come back to Texas you need to spend about a month. Spend a week on the coast in places like Galveston and Corpus Christi with a couple of days in Houston for good measure. Next spend a couple of days in San Antonio and a couple of days in California East.... I mean Austin. You should also spend some time in West Texas exploring the geography and small town culture between San Antonio and El Paso. Then, traveling from the desert to the forest, so to speak, go explore East Texas and maybe go fishing on one of the many reservoirs like Toledo Bend on the Texas/Louisiana borders. And you've got to enjoy the many different cuisines in each area. Might want to buy some pants a size bigger in the waist.

I thought that if I left Texas then I’d never want to go back, but Texas is my home and everywhere else just pails in comparison. Not saying that other places aren’t worth living in, but everything about Texas was just so comfortable. Even the things I did find uncomfortable, feel heavenly now. @@timesthree5757 Some years ago I got interested in American Indian folk lore and read as many collections of it as i could find. I noticed something interesting about their creation myths. Although they were as varied as you could imagine, every single one of them had one detail in common, people were not created with the world. In every single Indian creation story I have ever read, people are, somehow, already living before the world is created and are taken from wherever they were, the Happy Hunting Ground, the sky, asleep in a cave, and *put* into the Earth. I think this indicates that, as diverse as the different tales are, they all go back to common original, and that the first settlers were aware of the fact that they had come from one distinct place to another distinct place, and that initial understanding got incorporated into their mythology.

The people of Scotland have a strong connection to Texas history. Scots and Scottish-Americans helped map the state in the early 1800s, many fought in the Texas Revolution, and the Scottish Society of Texas (sponsors of the Texas Highland Games) even developed the Texas Bluebonnet Tartan, which was adopted as an official state symbol in 1989.

I know I am a bit late to the show, but loved this video. Texas is an amazing place, though I agree with people that Dallas doesn't showcase it the best. One thing...PLEASE don't handle your cowboy hat by the brim! It made me cringe every time. It should only be handled by the crown/dent area. :) I have to say that I visited Scotland on my honeymoon 10 years ago and felt the same way about Scotland that you feel about Texas. It is an amazing place with amazing people. Also, Whataburger beats In and Out any day of the week!

Waterburger? Lol. I've never heard anyone say it like that. I've heard whuttaburger and waddaburger. Ive never heard it with an R except british or australians who put an r at the end of names like instead of "eliza" they say "elizer". Thank you for sharing. That brightened my day with a giggle :)

Welcome Shaun! I'm from Texas, but have lived temporarily in Colorada for about 30 years. Scots are all over and well liked. Next time you're here be sure to visit the Scottish Fesitval in Estes, Colorado. It is always around Labor Day, September 1st. Bagpipe bands and competitions, pole throwing, every historical skill and trade, Border Collie competitions, Scotch sampling bars, one time we even saw the Royal Scotush Highlanders Bagpipe Band. And each clan has their colors or tartans or whatever you call them, you'd feel right at home I think. Good Luck.

I live in the Houston outskirts. I recommend you check out these areas, as well as San Antonio. We are even more friendly with even better food. You need to see some country lands too. The hill country is beautiful. My dads side is Scots/Irish...he traced us back to the year 1135 or something in Edinburgh. We descended from Princess Margaret. You are always welcome here!

I'm part Polish and there was a big Polish community there in Michigan but were chased out by Muslims just like a Jewish community not far from where I lived before. Can you say Dearborn and a few cities nearby? White flight from them. There were a lot of Italians in Detroit and it's suburbs. Gone now. White flight again.

Please see the hill country when you come back. Also take some of the famous scenic drives in Texas. So glad you enjoyed your time in Texas. I love my state and our people. My mom and my husband are from Scotland. I love my Scottish heritage. I love the beauty of Scotland and the hospitality of their people too. I went and found the house my mom grew up in. The people that lived there when I visited didn’t know me, my husband and in laws. Amazingly the lady of the house invited us in, served us a cup of tea, swapped stories and even gave us a tour of the house! My mom had described her room with a fireplace and how papa would sing her to sleep. I nearly cried on the house tour. Texans and Scots share love of where they’re from and the hospitality trait. Thank you for sharing your experience here.
