10 CRUISE SHIPS VS BIG WAVES 

Despite all modern technology, every so often, the ocean likes to remind everyone who is in charge.

I have great respect for the captains and sailers of the old sailships who explored the world ; they were really brave.

To think hundreds of years ago our ancestors crossed oceans on wood fairing ships , with cloth sails. They had guts , and immense courage.

The MTS Oceanos story is another good one. In 1991 the captain and crew abandoned the ship and its passengers during a bad storm! Only due to the ships onboard entertainers, who radioed the coast guard for help, did everyone get airlifted to safety. The one man who figured out how to use the radio and saved everyone because of it, was Moss Hills a true legend!

I'm a retired Helicopter Aircrewman and Rescue Swimmer with the U.S. Navy. In 1985 returning from a 7 month Med deployment, we hit the tail end of a hurricane. We were detached to the au.S.S. Kids DDG 993, the sea was so rough we were consistently being pounded by waves and at times we were listing up 40°. We were part of the U.S.S. Eisenhower CVN-69. The Ike was on n our starboard side about 4-5 miles away and she was playing submarine. You know it's rough when an nuclear aircraft carrier was being hit with seas so high, the flight deck was being submergered.

Original clips, no annoying music, no annoying ranting over the top of what's happening, just the clip, even if it's long, no interruptions. LOVE IT!! Thank you. The second clip, the 2019 Viking Cruise off the coast of Norway, perfect example of why all furnishings on a ship should be secured in place while underway. There are systems to lock the furniture down and release it for moving to a different position.

For some reason I don't expect that the experience of vacationing with 4500 strangers on a boat will ever be on my bucket list.

Stuff like this are among the few things I can watch on a tiny phone screen and still feel my stomach lurch.

The ocean terrifies me. Never underestimate it.

I once traveled from L.A. to Catalina Island with family aboard a small ship. Halfway there, the waves intensified to the point that it was near impossible to walk around. The only thing we could do was stay in one place and hold on. On the way back, I went up to the highest deck, grabbed the rail, and held on tightly while looking over the side. The ship rocked so hard that I could see either all ship or all ocean.

Every sixty seconds you spend angry, upset or mad, is a full minute of happiness you will never get back.

On a Navy ship I was officer of the deck on, crossing the North Atlantic in December we were taking green water over the bridge, 80 ft above the water. I have a great appreciation for the power of the sea

I don't know how you're not on TV narrating shows like this. The production quality and narration is as good as any shock reality show that's ever aired on network television.

It's strange that ships don't bolt the furniture down just in case something happens. Seems like it would be a good idea.

There was a bad storm once when we on a Viking Line (Finland, not Viking Cruises) ship between Helsinki and Stockholm. It was in December, so there was also ice in the water, and the crew told us in the morning that the captain stayed up all night for that one. They stayed in visual contact all night with a Siljaline ship as well, you could see it from the windows. It was definitely rocking and rolling, and then that sick feeling when you hear the ice grate against the hull.

This is why I do not go on cruise ships, or boats for that matter. I love the ocean, but I rather be safe on dry land. 😅😊

"...the worst cruise ship disaster of all time?" No mention then of the Costa Concordia on which 32 died, after which the ship was scrapped.

On a Hurtigruten journey around the Norwegian coast, we experienced 15metre waves. It was utterly terrifying and we thought we would die. However, we survived and were given a certified photo of the ship with the height of the waves as a commemorative reminder. Haven't been on a ship since.

I want to applaud the engineers who designed ships that can stay afloat without breaking apart or capsizing under such conditions!

Seeing a gigantic eye underwater is both my dream and nightmare

Critical point....someone should tell the ship builders and furnishing crews that all furniture is supposed to be SECURED !!

I swear TUGBOATS are such under appreciated vessels of the seas. They come to big expensive ships and peoples rescue all the time.

11:00 Hidious looking ship. It looks like a floating block of flats.

They survived, didn’t they? If you’ve never seen this before, it is pretty scary. Most ships will survive, but if there is loss of control due to engine or electrical failure things can get lifethreatening very fast.

Imagine being in the toilet while the waves tilts the ship.

Closest I’ve come to this is returning to NYC from Bermuda and sailing through the tail end of a hurricane. Actually, it was kind of fun but there were a lot of passengers in the mid-ship lounges puking their guts out. We lost a couple of windows in the fancy dining room in the stern. I have a great picture of my wife with her hair standing on end out on the deck.

Those poor people.The seas are not always friendly. As much as I love the ocean. I wouldn't want to go through that. Big respect for those who work out on the Ocean. GOD Bless.

The big problem on Viking Sky was that the oil level for all the engines was at the minimum mark, apparently that was quite normal at the time of the incident in the company. That did not go well when the ship encountered rough weather, making all engines (4 of them, if I remember correctly) fail.

Earlier this year in June I was aboard the carnival Mardi Gras, one of the largest ships in the carnival line. We were going through the Caribbean, and remember the seas being super rough during the entirety of this 10 day trip. My butt was clenching so hard, I’m pretty sure it got muscle built lol… if I was on such a large ship and IT was getting rocked around, I can’t imagine being on anything smaller without actually crapping myself. Anyway, I’m going on another cruise this upcoming summer along Mexico!

Wow when that one ship's window blew that must have been a hell of a blow to the window. The power of water is kind of terrifying when you think about it.

My late father was a WWII veteran, and when returning home from Europe on a Liberty ship, the vessel encountered a fierce winter storm on the North Atlantic. Many is the time that I listened with fascination to his account of the ship being tossed in this terrible storm, causing the passengers to wonder if they had survived the war only to drown on the way home. Thankfully, they made it back home- but watching videos such as this causes me to have at least some idea of how frightening that experience must have been for my dad and the other people. Thanks for this presentation; it was interesting.

Anthem of the seas clip is normal, the cabin is on the lowest deck of the passenger cabins way below the lifeboat deck as can be seen on the image of it, the square windows are passenger cabins and are roughly 15 to 20 feet above the waterline so waves hitting them happens all the time.

Love watching these. I’m on Ovation of the Seas right now bound for Sydney and the Pacific is so smooth it’s easy to forget you’re on a ship!

I love how on the first video the cameraman was safe and even developed flying powers.

7:30 those men are immune to roller coasters

The Viking Cruise problems outside the coast of Norway was the result of the captain’s/ crew’s very poor judgement. While all the Norwegian coastal liners stayed in harbour when the storm warning came (it wasn’t sudden) to wait out the worst weather, the Viking Cruise ship chose to go out to sea. And what do you know - after a while in the storm, they got engine problems, leaving them more or less dead in the water, or rather the horrendous waves, thus illustrating why the captain should have stayed in harbour instead of “assuming” and gambling with the lives of the passengers.

Was on Royal Caribbean's Fantasy in the Gulf of Mexico in 2008. The cold front that caused snow in New Orleans moved into the Gulf and hit us on the way to Cancun with 30 foot waves. Half of the passengers were sea sick and didn't show up for several meals. The swimming pool lost a lot of its water. Took me two days once we got back to lose my "sea legs".

Not being a fan of seasickness, my only cruise was back in 1982. A few times since then, I’ve been asked to give cruises another chance. My answer was usually “no” or “hell no.” I have plenty of reasons to stay on land, but if I ever needed another, this video will take care of it nicely.

I work for a cruise line travel agent, and it’s safe to say that I probably shouldn’t mention any of these events 😂

The main reason why people are sent to their cabins in modern ships is that the ships can stay afloat but just like the second clip, staff are more concerned about furniture rolling around and hit you. In your cabin there is very little furniture that can hit you.

why is furniture not attached?

The power of the ocean is something you have to see to truly understand and believe. Just watching a video of it is not enough. Until you are on the deck of a ship and looking up to a wall of water as tall as high rise office building, you just don't get it. It is *awesome* in the most literal definition of that word.

In 2000 or 2001, a cruise ship out of one of the European countries ran aground off the coast of my island home. Came to a halt about 300 yards off-shore almost parallel to the shore, listing sharply to starboard. A local scuba master told me later that over 7 miles of coral was damaged. The government did not allow the passengers off the boat as the island population was just 7000 people at the time and the nearly 3000 people on board would overwhelmed the island amenities. We all held beach parties and waved at the passengers. The Captain must have felt pretty foolish. It took days for the cruise line to rescue them and weeks to have the ship tugged away. I'm sure the Captain had some 'splaining to do.

The best part of this was all the cruise line commercials during this video.

I always say if u can look at the ocean and not feel small.....u think too much of yourself. The ocean humbles all of us

Ah, the Irish crossings will put hair on your chests. As a kid in the 80s we got stuck just 10 miles from Dublin overnight on a very old ferry. Everyone was crying, with no possible rescue as the storm was too bad. Corridors in life jackets and sick bags. There were priests heading up groups of women cracking out novenas. The new fleet brought in through the 90s were game changers. No one even left the bars, regular travellers were like battle hardened sailors. Us Teens like 'this is nothing, we've seen sh!t'.

That second clip gets me every time. The people sitting there define the word stupid. There's literally a one thousand pound piano waiting to break free from the floor and crush everyone in it's path. A lady literally gets hit in the head with a ceiling panel and doesn't move an inch while it's swinging around waiting to hit her again. There's a glass table dancing around the room just begging to remove somebodies legs in a cinematic fashion. The guy filming even says "get that on video", like it's going to be used as evidence of how the cruise liner can control the weather and make people not be absurdly clueless. People, is the worse person to be around when common sense and self preservation will save your life.

5 min mark- lady who For No Good Reason got up from her chair to grab a chair where the ceiling was caving in and then it finally caved in on her head hahaha

Crazy thing is, my grandma was supposed to go on that carnival cruise ship during that time. I am happy AF she didn't 😂😂😂

just goes to show that no matter how big the ship, the ocean is bigger. i still love cruising. :)

I've been on a ferry from France to Ireland in a similar storm like no. 1. and weirdly enough I never get seasick. You could not see anyone at the ferry anymore and the area near the toilets reeked of puke. The sound coming from the cargo decks was really unnerving but other than that we felt safe and nothing major happend to people and no stuff flew around. But I am guessing that they had some damaged cars in the lower decks.

For my wife and I first cruise we ended up sailing through a just reduced hurricane to a tropical storm. Winds were close to 70 mph and the ship was older than I was! It was so old it was riveted together not welded! That was a very nervous Cruise for the both of us!!

Loved the video. Wished we were there also. Today, a cool change at 32c here in Perth....Western Australia, that is.

I been on 3 cruise ships haven’t seen a huge wave yet but I went to the Bermuda Triangle and lived oh and I saw the Atlantis resort I can’t wait to go back there

In Sep 1994 the passanger ship Estonia sank into the Baltic sea on it's way from Tallinn Estonia to Stockholm Sweden. Over 850 persons lost their lives that night.

In the 80's when i was a child we were on a ferry coming back to uk from the hook of holland and encountered a terrible storm. The north sea is definitely no joke.

OMG. I was caught up in a Gale force 9 back from Denmark to the UK, February on the north sea, not good! I have never been so scared and 🤮🤮 in all my days, that was the end of my sea legs adventures! 🌊🌊🌊

I was on the matson liner from Hawaii and the whole trip was like this. Only three people in the dining room me and two more. Mostly people were in their cabins and if they weren't they'd be holding a bag when they ran someplace

Idk how my brain does it, I’ve never been on a big ship before even anywhere near big waves but I had a lucid dream of being inside a big cruise ship and witnessing the feeling and chaotic atmosphere of the ship tilting nearly overboard with gigantic waves crashing, I was in fear thinking this was it, I couldn’t imagine this in real life super scary

This is why cruise lines require everybody to participate in their muster drills!

The passengers are those who have it easy in life, nice wake up call for them that they aren't the centre of the universe and nature is the boss. Good job nature. (Well done to the hard working staff too, very brave) 👍🏻

I wonder why in the world they don't have the furniture secured to the floor? All those moving heavy objects are very very dangerous. Also there should be seat belts or some type of passenger securing devices

I went on one cruise on RCCL's Granduer of the Seas when I was 15 and while it is a 900+ foot long ship, our first night in the Eastern Caribbean we experienced 4-8 foot seas and it gently rocked me to sleep...however these seas are threatening to the ships as well as the passengers. I could never imagine experiencing this on a large vessel!

In cruise ships why dont they make the furniture embedded in the flooring of the ships?

I've been on 5 cruises, 3 during hurricane season, and never encountered anything like this! Scary for sure!
