Sting was really the only other person doing that entrance. He stopped doing it for a year then after talking to Bret (who discussed it with the rest of the family) he bought it back. Although Sting always wore a very hefty harness under his coat while Owen was wearing a hidden harness with a quick release (it was the release that failed) if you go back and watch after Sting lands the camera normally cuts to a reaction shot (a lot of the time an overreaction from Hogan) while Sting gets rid of his harness. Sting stopped doing the drop in TNA because there was less space to land safely and WWE have banned most all high work.
+Don Rhemy I'm pretty sure that was the initial idea. I remember reading about talks of including the "WWE Network" as part od sports packages for different cable companies and stuff like that. But with the increase of streaming services they ended up going their current route and I, for one, love it.
Andrews Diaz-WWE attendance and ratings are down. The company thrives because of lucrative television deals. The product is garbage now. Until they change several issues they’ll continue to fall. What they need is a true competitor with enough financial backing to force them to improve like WCW did.
Benoit's death hit me really hard. He had been a favorite of mine for years. Then when the news of what happened came out I was in shock for a good week. I haven't felt such a wide range of emotions in such a short period ever since
Still a few things I would've like to have seen in this list: - Owen Hart's death (May 23rd, 1999) - 'Taker's Streak (April 6th, 2014) - The whole CM Punk breaking the 4th Wall speech (June something 2011) - Taker vs Mick Foley's HIAC match (June 28th 1998)
I don’t know how much the Undertaker Mankind HIAC match change things. But it was probably the greatest wrestling match I’ve ever seen. Right up there with Flair/Steamboat’s marathon
i just cant with the pg era. i hate it, its because of that era that i havent seen it in years. my heros are either retired, semi, dead, or very old. i miss the good old days of wwf-wwe
Truth B. Told I loved pre PG WWE(yes I didn't understand the sexual moments of it, I was like 5, 6 maybe seven years old when I got into wrestling) but it was so much better! It feels like it's dumbed down for the younger generation of wrestling fans and I really hate the corporate pandering from USA's parent company during Raw and Smackdown, like we get it: You're owned by NBC Universal
January 4, 1999. For 2 reasons. #1: WCW used to enjoy giving away Raw results on Nitro. Raw was taped and Nitro was live. On that day, Mankind has won his 1st WWF title. WCW decided to leak that result while trying to make it sound like the worst thing ever. But it caused half a million WCW viewers to change the channel to WWF. And WCW has never beat WWF since then. #2: Because WCW knew of The Rock vs Mankind title match, they decided to do a title match of their own to counteract It. Not only that, it was booked to appear as a HUGE you-don't-want-to-miss match. It was Kevin Nash as champ vs Hollywood Hulk Hogan. And what was the result of this HUGE you-don't-want-to-miss match? The Fingerpoke of Doom. Fans felt extremely slated. And WCW would never top WWF in ratings again.
Yo Adam, thanks for the sympathetic take on Chris Benoit. A lot of people can't get past the "what" he did to see the "why". I'm by no means excusing it, but it's important that people remember the circumstances surrounding the whole incident, and it's a whole lot easier to just bury the man than it is to ask questions. Good on ya.
I don’t excuse what he did- but I can’t forget how much I loved his matches. His royal rumble matches against Jericho and angle are among my favourites
beau jacobs I like to think it wasn’t *Benoit* doing the murdering, but instead it was the effects of those concussions and drugs who murdered the family. Benoit himself, if his brain was 100%, he wouldn’t do that. I hope.
Bats RULE I personally don’t even think he remembered doing it. Brain damage plus xanax plus steroids. Watch the video on Paul Kariya one of the best hockey players in my time. Scored the game winner in game 6 of the stanley cup finals. Biggest goal in his career and he never remembered it. To this day he doesn’t.
It's a good list. And man, did it surprisingly hit me hard. Benoit and Guerrero were my favorites as a teen, and as an adult. Heroes to me. I'm shocked by how hard my emotions are manly leaking from my face right now, just from thinking about both losses of my heroes. I can't even adequately describe why I'm writing a comment on a many months old list video now. But I felt compelled to. Thank you for the content you provide, WhatCulture Wrestling. And thanks to my heroes. No matter how it ended, you guys changed the industry I love in two of the best ways. RIP.
@@ryanredmond87 Benoit wasnt a hero, he was a slefish peace of shit who took the lives of his 7 year old son and wife. One of the best wrestlers ever, and one of the worst human beings ever.
MickyAvStickyHands yeah a business super genius? Need I remind you of the XFL, and the WBF? The only reason he beat out Ted Turner is because Ted sold TBS to Time-Warner. And they didn’t want to be in the wrestling business.
When Eddie died I was both shocked and heartbroken!! When Chris Benoit killed his family then himself it totally devastated me knowing that these two tragic events would change WWE FOREVER!!! Eddie (Latino Heat) lives on in WWE Sasha Banks pays tribute to Eddie every chance she gets!!!! THANK YOU SASHA BANKS FOR KEEPING EDDIE'S SPIRIT ALIVE IN WWE!!!!!!! They need to bring back Attitude Era all this PG CRAP is getting old!! Like if you AGREE!!!!!!!
@@darrenbarnes8669 the "guy" that Eddie was fighting was JBL and they were good friends backstage. When Eddie collapsed, JBL obviously knew smth was wrong because that wasn't in the script, so he pinned him quickly to end the match and for the paramedics rush in and do their job.
no one fucking cares about you whining about WWE not being the way u want it also eddies dead benoit killed himself and his family WWE wii never be TV-14 again.
Celt04 - WWE & UFC Gaming and More that whole situation was sketchy. Alot of the "evidence" didn't line up. Alot of questions unanswered b4 they closed the case. Also he had severe CTE it wasn't roid rage like alot of people thought
Funky Rooster yeah i was watching more about Benoit’s death and him killing his family I felt Beniot was innocent, and according to everybody on most of the Beniot matches i watch they all say he’s innocent So I apologize for that reply
And he beat out WCW in the end when all was said and done. I hate his approach to a lot of things nowadays but love him or hate him he's earned respect.
+Arthur Brown well look at how things have changed in just over 10 years, at WrestleMania 20, a full MSG chanted "Thank you Vince" people had signs with love for Vince. Now people hate things just because it was something Vince put out there (and yes some of it is asinine ridiculous bullshit).
I still remember the story when Benoit died. Vince had "blown up in his limo" on raw beforehand, then Chris, and Vince came out and was like "you're probably wondering why I'm here since I blew up last week." Benoit's death hits me more than Eddie's.
I hate to say it but Owens death resulted in damn near nothing for WWE. The rooftop entrances like his were banned but that's a tiny change and affected no one.
And a couple weeks later, the birth of Hollywood Hogan Both of those events pretty much ushered in the Attitude Era, which was the second big explosion of wrestling (the first being in the mid 80's)
Cool Hand Luke Please, Everyone, always treat Everyone and Everything with kindness, love and respect. Please always remember, Jesus is always there for you no matter what. Please open your hearts to love and please find Jesus!!!!!!!
Considering Raw still hasn't had a 3.0 Nielson rating since last year after Wrestlemania, it looks like WWE may be in trouble with the USA Network soon.
+live2rock13 actually No... they're still Top 10 Cable on Mondays, USA's Number One each week regularly...and it is USA not WWE that keeps Raw at 3 hours (adding SD! is also a vote of confidence)... if USA was upset with them, they certainly wouldn't give them that much air time...
On the plus side, it gave us yet another amazing Wrestlemania match after Michaels was caught for doping, forced to relinquish the title, giving it to Razor Ramon, which would ultimately lead to THAT Ladder Match
+Bryan Merrill II - Same here man, you never hear what good things Benoit did, unfortunately just the horrific incident. Dude obviously had some issues.
no, Vince's inability to evolve with recent times although he could do that in the 80s and 90s killed WWE wresting is fine though, we have NXT, ROH and NJPW
Nick Lawrence Please, Everyone, always treat Everyone and Everything with kindness, love and respect. Please always remember, Jesus is always there for you no matter what. Please open your hearts to love and please find Jesus!!!!!!!
It was Fall of 1989 when they went in front of the Maryland athletic commission and said its all fake. They are Sports Entertainment. Thus do not need a doctor at ringside, so they can save money.
what about the night mankind won the title? it's the same night that the fingerpoke of doom happened, the infamous "butts in the seats comment, and it was the last time wcw beat raw in ratings. wwe had won.
me8657 Please, Everyone, always treat Everyone and Everything with kindness, love and respect. Please always remember, Jesus is always there for you no matter what. Please open your hearts to love and please find Jesus!!!!!!!
Owen Hart was really tough for me to come to terms with. I was young, I was a fan, I didn’t know what to believe, and it truly just made me sad. The first time reality hit me like a train as a wrestling fan.
Some people ask"Oh,why are chair shots to the head banned and why are they censored in videos that include them(on WWE 's main channel)"well #3 that's why RIP Chris Benoit
The one thing that will always forever bug me (And I'm not the only one that will always be bugged by this) is why didn't WWE have a drug and concussion testing program in the first place since day one? I mean, think about it: the Benoit Family would still be alive to this day and Eddie Guerrero would still be alive to this day. Thumbs up if you agree.
You gotta think of it this way; WWE, like any company that involves physical contact like the MLB or the NFL has had to adapt based on situation. Whenever the MLB began getting mass steroid scandals in the 80's drug testing became more mandatory. Just like WWE. In the past 10-20 years the NFL has started doing more research/ taken steps to prevent concussions due to the amount of deaths and suicides from it. Just like WWE.
Wasn't one of the reasons Eddie got fired from WWE in his early run with them for refusing to go to rehab after finding about his drug use? I could be wrong... Can't remember?
One has to appreciate WWE's ability to withstand so many blows, from so many different directions, and still keeps going. Not exactly soaring the high heavens as they used to, but they march on nonetheless.
Owen Hart's death changed wrestling as well. Since then WWE has had no entrances involving a cable as far as I know, and Sting would refuse to do it on WCW until Bret Hart told him to do it.
+Zskillit Well in all honesty it didn't really change the WWE like these moments did. Surely it was one of, if not the most shocking and saddening moment in WWE but it didn't bring change like the wellness policy with Eddie's death and the increased medical restrictions with Benoit's death.
Adam Bartlett Please, Everyone, always treat Everyone and Everything with kindness, love and respect. Please always remember, Jesus is always there for you no matter what. Please open your hearts to love and please find Jesus!!!!!!!
I don't actually have an issue with PG like a lot of people do. I agree with what was said in the Pipebomb video about it. It's not the rating that's the problem, it's the booking
I really wish they would just abandon the steel chair entirely. Without the head shot it is a pretty pointless and silly looking weapon. Especially considering they are allowed to do other "headshots" with many different weapons.
The steel chair is one of wrestling's biggest icons, you cant think about wrestling without thinking about chairs. There's no way they are going to retire such iconic weapon.
+Cronic Fuze He will be back sooner or later..I don't think anyone cares to see him fight in the UFC anymore. He will be one and done more than likely.
Unless you're Chris Benoit or Hulk Hogan (etc) then WWE sporodically featuring their past wrestlers means nothing. They owned them during that time and have the rights to distribute those images. They don't do it too much because what's the point of showcasing talent you no longer have? CM Punk is still prepping for UFC.
IMO.... you forgot a few pivotal dates in wwe history..... 10/17/83 - Snuka jumps off the Cage on Muraco - MSG, NY 1/23/84 - the birth of Hulkamania - MSG, NY 5/19/96 - The Kliq Incident - MSG, NY 5/23/99 - Death Of Owen Hart - Kemper Arena, MO
applepitz All right, except Owen's death. Yes, it was a tragedy, and a really shocking one. But absolutely nothing changed for WWE. The Curtain Call did, it turned a Triple H King of the Ring victory into a Steve Austin one, and with his victory, the legendary Austin 3:16 promo. Snuka diving off the Cage was also important (and overlooked). And Hulkamania explains itself. But Owen's death changed nothing for WWE...
we still have one of the greatest triple h i have a little respect for john cena i think chris jericho still wresltles but other then that everything is shitty
+MOI it isn't because it's PG, if that was the case then NXT, ROH, NJPW, Lucha Underground, Dragon Gate etc. would all suck since they are PG. WWE's booking may be awful but that's not cause it's PG, it's because it's bad regardless. Some things in the Attitude Era, if they happened today everybody would be saying fuck PG that was so stupid... It's just the booking itself that is bad sometimes... Personally I'd rather have what we have now with NXT than revert back to TV-14. It's just safer for the performers and it's a lot more of a serious product IMO
UPDATES: April 3, 2023 - WWE was sold to Endeavor, which was completed on September 12, 2023, making WrestleMania 39 as the last event which was owned and controlled by the McMahon Family January 26, 2024 - Vince McMahon resigns from TKO after allegations of sexual misconduct, taking away authority of WWE from the McMahon Family. January 25, 2025 - WWE Network will shut down all its operations, and WWE content will be transferred to Netflix
#11 Owen Hart fucking dying. Didn't change the business, but that's some serious shit right there. You can be sure it affected Vince. #12 The entire year of 2000. Legendary performances from The Rock, Mankind, Triple H, Rikishi and Scottie and Grandmaster.
Yeah but his reign lasted more than 25 hours, therefore you could have taken you 24 hours and 59 seconds to click on his video which is quite slow contradicting your point...
Vince didn't really step up in the death of Chris Benoit. He totally danced around the brain scans on Chris in an interview about it. He even flat out said they were wrong.
ND Cross no one entered the ring from the rafters anymore after that night Even Sting who did it for years in the WCW only did it once after that night.
September 13, 2001. The first public mass gathering of any kind in the US after 9/11, was a live episode of Smackdown. I wouldn't say it changed wrestling, but it's still a notable date.
3:10 haha i remember watching 2 tvs at the same time, one wwf and the other wcw, whichever one looked more interesting i watched with sound on and muted the other but tapped both
