His english is very good,but some people seems to think the opposite..And thats crazy. English speaking people understand all without problem-I guess..And i'ts not like some speakers who make it like torture to listen to them..I'm from sweden and even if we have good knowledge of english overall,my english are worse than his. (or in the same ballpark..) And I listen and read english books,radio and so on every day. He is better than approximately 65% of the population..(based on my gut-knowledge..) In short: I agree with you.

Ok, I'm Dutch. Almost every word you just said is almost similar to Nederlands. Fart/Vaart, Fack/Vakje, Kackerlacka/Kakkerlak, Gift/Gif, Farthinder would be Vaarthinder. We understand this but it relates to the action related to the subject. In Holland we usually describe the shape, rather than its utillity. So its Drempel. We don't know the word Klämdag, but we would understand it, because Klemmen (e = Dutch ä) means to put something so, that it can't move. I have never heard of the word Buikzwager.

I find it interesting that the meaning of these words is somewhat intuitive for me after having studied German a few years. "Gift" means poison in German as well. "Farthinder" was understandable, and "Kakerlake" is the German form of cockroach. I'm learning bits of Swedish here or there, but thinking of returning to German first to help me understand better =)

You had right until the Klämdag and klämdag means it is a red-day (no work) and a non red day and as it is a klämdag its a holiday. Kläm does not mean hug, it means like you got between something and cant out of there and then you are stuck withs means kläm. IF you didn´t understand im gonna tell you that stuck and kläm means the same thing. Nice of him thinking of hugs ^^ You said the words good and the other translation was very good so i have no more opinion of that.

These words look alot like dutch words! Similarities are in the numbers: 2. Swedish: Gift. Dutch: Gif. English: Poison. 3a. Swedish: Fart. Dutch: Vaart. English: Speed. 3b. Swedish: Hinder, in farthinder. Dutch: Hinder. English: Obstacle 4a. Swedish: Klem. Dutch: Klem. English: Clamp 4b. Swedish: Dag. Dutch: Dag. English: Day 5. As he said, buikzwager. 6. Swedish: Fack. Dutch: Vak. English: Tray, Job 7. Swedish: Kackerlacka. Dutch: Kakkerlak. English: Cockroach 10. Swedish: Slut. Dutch: Sluit. English: End, Closure

Swedish and Dutch both descend from the tongues spoken by the germanic tribes, before europe was taken by the roman empire, so they have a lot in common. German also has very similar words, naturally.

***** German and Dutch are kinda the same as Portuguese and Spanish. They have some similarities in words, alot of words look a lot like eachother and they have almost the same grammar. I do think that German and Dutch sound a bit different from eachother that Porturgese and Spanish but maybe that's just because I am Dutch.
@AzureKite
@AzureKite 9 лет назад
Chris That's a good comparison, but portugeuse and spanish have fairly different grammar. And honestly, for me (a brazilian) portuguese and spanish are very different but german and dutch would sound almost the same to me lol

Somehow Swedish and Dutch have a lot in common. Gift = poison = Gif in Dutch, only we pronounce the G like the sound a goose makes. Fart = Speed = Vaart Hinder = obstacle (?) we use the word 'hinder', but also 'obstakel'. We have even made it into a verb: hinderen. Which means to bother. But with buksvager, its sounded more like our 'geluksvogel' (luckybird, you say this when someone is lucky) but i've never heard of 'buikzwager' xD Fack = vak. In Dutch we also say vak to a compartment in a box or closet, if we mean workersunion we say 'vakbond'. Bond is union. Vak can also be translated as school subject. But vak does not mean work or job. Logics. kackerlacka, we use kakerlak. But I prefer kackerlacka now. Slut, we say 'slet' to sluths, but we also know the word 'Sluit' which mean something like close.

The word "gift" actually do mean something you give or a gift, look at words like avgift, medgift/hemgift, tilgift, the word for marriage too(gift as in marriage refers to having been given in marriage). The word gift when referring to poison was probably a euphemism for giving someone a "gift" of inheritance powder, that later came to refer to the thing itself.
