Notice how so many franchises seemed to peaked around the mid 2000's. I think it's because gaming was a growing industry but not quite as large as it is now. It was more about building and growing franchises than appeasing shareholders. I consider myself lucky that I was a teenager at that time and got to experience that era at that age.
@wtfiswiththosehandles
@wtfiswiththosehandles 6 месяцев назад
I think it's because gaming was for enthusiasts until 2010 or so, then it became mainstream and casual. Games used to be hard and interesting, now they're mostly bland and easy. At least the ones from major developers. Lucky for us we have a huge indie game market these days, thanks to holy Gaben.
@contramundi1
@contramundi1 6 месяцев назад
guess what became popular around that time... social media. gaming was a relatively niche market that didn't have a huge following aside from actual gamers. then social media became a thing and all the casuals were introduced to gaming. it went from niche to mainstream in a few years. the thing with niche markets is that quality is paramount. selling bad quallity to a small audience has huge reprecusions. selling bad quality to a massive audience not as much. I think that is why gaming sucks these days.
@Scribz1212
@Scribz1212 6 месяцев назад
Maybe you and Jake are just similar in age and are both the same level of jaded? Honestly even the "bad games" that release these days are more fun than the games of our youth, nostalgia is just a powerful thing
@Scribz1212
@Scribz1212 6 месяцев назад
@@contramundi1 except 2o23 was probably the best year of gaming the industry has every had. Hogwarts legacy, Jedi survivor, tears of the kingdom, starfield, resident evil 4, Alan Wake 2, balfurs gate 3, spiderman 2, etc and I know I'm forgetting several great games from last year. The people that complain about the state of the gaming industry today vs 30 years ago is just an anhedonic curmudgeon wearing rose covered glasses and disillusioning themselves with the nostalgia. video games were not a niche market in the 90s and 00s, there's a reason the PS2 is still the best selling console of all time even though it was the PS3 generation that was introduced with social media. It only seemed niche to you at the time because you were a child. Gaming doesn't suck today, your ability to enjoy things in life does though

In a world where a franchise like Dark Souls has taken off and become so beloved, I'm genuinely surprised that Ninja Gaiden hasn't re-emerged. The controls for that game felt a little clunky and the enemies and level design were incredibly unforgiving, but much like dark souls, once you kind of figured things out and stuff clicked into place you were like "Actually, this has to be one of the best action games I've ever played."

Because the creator was out and the team left were the ones that made Ninja Gaiden 3 and that was trash. Since then they made Nioh and that is way more successful than Ninja Gaiden ever was. Now they are making Rise of the Ronin. So Ninja Gaiden is probably a low priority for them.

tbh I don't feel sorry for Volition at all. When the announced the new Saints Row nearly all of their fan base literally said "Oh wait, this looks like its gonna suck". Then they went on a years long campaign of fighting and making fun of their fans on Twitter and other socials, so they kinda got what they deserved. Also Medal of Honor Rising Sun was phenomenal. Agreed. It's not like Volition put that game out without knowing what people were saying about it. It got badmouthed from the very start and they persisted in "no, you are all wrong, this will be awesome, shut up" then were surprised when everyone who said they thought it would suck said it sucked. Different from even something like Aliens: Colonial Marines or even The Last of Us 2, which faced backlash for the opposite reason (devs outright lied in trailers to make the game look better or different to what it was), so players were taken by surprise when they got something they didn't like. Nobody was surprised the Saints Row remake sucked, except Volition.

I'm surprised Command & Conquer wasn't on this list. My favorite campaign was Red Alert 2, and favorite Skirmish mode was Generals Zero Hour. After C&C 3: Tiberium Wars, it went downhill fast. If you follow the development of fear 2 and 3 it will make some more sense. The companies that made the original fear split and both had the rights to the title and they both started working in fear 2 simultaneously. The fear 2 we know came out first and then the other company completely bought the rights and made their fear 2 into "f3ar". Fear 3 is a reworked game forced to be a sequel to 2 instead of 1.

Carbon was okay, but the lack of car variety made it suffer a little bit, Shift was a wrong turn for the franchise but was good enough, the only thing that saved Undercover is the fact that it was one of the first arcade racing games to have both the Koenigsegg CCX and the Bugatti Veyron, which any car enthusiast knows that those two companies were at war in the 2000’s for both the top speed record and space in our hearts, and then it just went downhill from there. EA honestly should’ve did what Rockstar Games did with Midnight Club did and left on a high note after Carbon

For me, for the Saints Row games it was the fourth one, I'd get quite far but it doesn't matter how many times I start over, I end up losing complete interest in the game, I think it was because there were way too many side missions, with some getting really hard and the red door story mission being glitched so I could never get all the achievements. The insane amount blue lights you had to go to and the false sense of security it gave you that the game might be broken in this area too so you always feel it might end up being impossible to get them all.

At the time it was beyond scary, and really stood out to me as weird and fun since I had no precedence for what makes a good Silent Hill game. They're probably just some personal opinions, but... -Dead Rising 4 didn't feel like a "back to origin" at all. It completely watered down the psychos which were considered a major attraction point of past games. -Tony Hawk suffered from Activision having coughed up a TON of cash to purchase the licence for 15(to check) years because they thought they had something intemporal on their hands. Except interest in the genre died off but they still had to get some payback on the licence, so they invested in development as little as they could to get some sales from possible die-hard fans. -Medal of Honor is one of the numerous game that was caught in the "modern military shooter" trend started by Call of Duty where everyone tried to copy that. It's just a bad case of some suits thinking that any CoD clone would sell just as well.

If you ever revisit this topic: Breath of Fire. 1 though 4 were great, kept on theme while exploring new ideas and other kinds of systems to use. Then you got to 5: Dragon Quarter. Complete shift in from fantasy to post apocalyptic, limited magic, turning into a dragon actually starts a game over timer making you have to restart the game multiple times to get more time as a dragon. Then there's the old RE style of saving, just this time with a payphone and coins. Ugh. Ruined the series. There was a 6, but it was a Japan only MMO kind of deal. I wish they would remake the old games with today's graphics.

I agree with nearly all your points. My only disagreement is your take on Dead Rising. DR1 was groundbreaking, amazingly fun, and frustratingly hard all at the same time. Finding stuff around the mall and discovering how each handles in combat rewarded exploration. Having to keep up on a strict mission schedule was cool but felt overwhelming when coupled with all the side encounters and constant radio calls but honestly the whole time management thing was part of the charm of that entry. The main story being serious with survivor encounters being a grab bag of silly or brutal psycho made meeting them interesting and scary at the same time. Now if you ask me, DR2 did a lot of things right. It introduced the idea of combining weapons to make really cool and fun McGuiver style weapons which was a huge staple in zombie movies that no one realized was lacking in the formula until they had it. Transitioning the time management to focus on zombrex as well as being late helped mantain a sense of urgency while cutting down on the number of encounters to feel more manageable. The story was cool, focusing on a more personal story while also showing off what our society would be like once we became accustomed to the idea that zombies are just apart of everyday life now. DR2 introduced a lot of cool ideas and still maintained this identity of being stuck in a hopeless world, surrounded by tragedy and struggling strangers, where your only means of survival was dependent on your creativity. For me DR3 is where the framchise peaked. It made for an excellent launch title, showing off all sorts of cool ideas like the best smartglass integration of xbox games and vehicle combos. The graphics were amazing without bogging down the system and they introduced so many new weapon combinations with the ability to build them on the fly. The characters were a great balance of memorable, satire, and weird. The story was fun and well paced, had fun beats and was actually engaging. The leveling system was awesome because it actually was given depth beyond level milestone perks. It was just bursting with originality and good ideas. DR4 is where it kind of just gave up. There wasn't really anything new going on at all. No new ideas outside of a limited time exosuit that felt more uninspired than intended. Like they were trying to recapture the first game without understanding what made the series fun in the first place. It straight up has the same feeling as the saints row reboot.

I think the problem with some franchises is the story is written on an arc and in some cases, it was written as a single game, others maybe 2 or 3. The problem is more, the more games became lucrative, the more the business side creeped into the creative side. So a franchise might have 1 - 3 games in it, but the bean counters are like "MORE!" Kind of like, Supernatural, seasons 1 to 5, good. Everything after that is an abortion.

Oh boy, so many to mention: call of duty, battlefield, international superstar soccer, contra, wolfestein, batman arkham, the list never ends. I'm actually impressed how Capcom managed to save Resident Evil out of the abyss it had fallen with 5 and 6, but at the same time I utterly hate Capcom for the treatment they gave to other great franchises like Breath of Fire, MegaMan and Viewtiful Joe, those really deserve better.

Agreed. Shame that they did not mention these huge franchises. As a huge fan of sports games, I'd add Nba, fifa and madden to the list

Capcom is sitting on gold and doing nothing with it. If I was a billionaire I would probably fund a remake of the RE Outbreak series That game came out at the wrong time

@@oldgregg86. I suppose if you count Suicide Squad since it does take place in the Arkhamverse, then yeah that’s a massive step down in quality for sure. I know people were sour on Batman Arkham Knight because of the over reliance on the Batmobile (which is greatly over exaggerated imo) and some elements of the plot like the Arkham Knight’s identity not being completely satisfying, but goddamn if that game wasn’t made with so much heart and passion and otherwise perfects pretty much everything else the Arkham games did up to that point.

The Medal of Honor I thought was incredible when I played it as a child on the PS3. Maybe it’s just the child memory making me think it was an insane game.

People forget Medal of Honor was competing with call of duty for a while. Clearly we know who wins the longevity award, but MoH competed with the big boys at one point. Huge fall off, really disappointing

I think that Perfect Dark Zero had a couple of things going for it to be so disliked. One is that expectations were so high because of the original, but also because as you say it was touted as a next gen experience when in reality it was an original Xbox game that was given higher resolution textures and some lighting effects to be brought to the 360.

Kingdom Hearts deserves a video just for itself... It has so many spinoffs that it's just impossible to know what's the story so far.

mass effect would be a perfect entry to this list considering andromeda basically butchered the reputation that helped the original games established what is regarded to be 1 of the greatest gaming trilogies of all time and while they announced a new game, it's hard to have confidence in the next mass effect game considering just how negative of a reputation bioware has now

Yeah, I thought it'd be in the video. But the problem is, it didn't get worse over time. It was more abrupt. ME1,2,3 all have their fans and are all awesome. And then we got Andromeda... Maybe Dragon Age would fit better for this video. But then again, DA:I wasn't that bad.

One franchise that came to mind were the Spyro games. The first 3 on PS1 were absolutely amazing at the time. Then the PS2 games went very strange by swapping the charge and fire buttons as well as changing the gameplay for the worse

The original PS1 trilogy was developed by Insomniac Games, who later went on to make the Rachet & Clank and Resistance franchises for the PS2 and PS3 area, respectively. That's why that original Spyro trilogy was a masterpiece.

It pained me to hear “Ninja Gaiden started at the top in the early 2000s” when the franchise dates back to the 80s. But hey, who needs facts, right? As for a franchise that got worse, I know most won’t agree, but Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild took too hard of a left turn and killed what the franchise was. I respect them for trying a new direction, but for me personally, it’s a mile away from how enjoyable everything preceding it had been
