Here's a hot, controversial opinion: stuff costs too much nowadays. Even video games are affected, with price tags forcing many players to wait for an eventual sale before they pick up the newest releases. But things have gotten particularly out of hand with the rise of downloadable content and microtransactions as companies now have all-new ways to try to grab our hard-earned dollarydoos. It's not so bad if you're at least getting your money's worth, but far too often games are trying to charge us for things we don't even want-or worse, things that should have been included in the game that already drained our bank account in the first place. Here are 10 Games That Charged Players Real Money for Stupid Things.

Need for Speed: Undercover doesn't get enough stick for having microtransactions for a single player game in 2008. I feel it needs to be called out more for EA's greed and relatedly the downfall of Need for Speed as a franchise and into a service to take money off consumers.

The majority of money that can be spent in game is stupid and it's just that most people are used to it because they've grown up with it. One of the 2K executives said of people criticising monetisation a few years ago in the NBA games that 'people want stuff for free and we don't have anything to offer them' or words to that effect, completely ignoring that the game isn't free to play and that people who've bought the game and don't spend extra are customers as well....

The biggest disappointment with Asura's Wrath isn't that they added a true ending only a couple months after the game launched. It's that they never gave us a way to just have the game in a complete state. Hopefully in their remake happy state lately they'll look kindly at that generation of games in a couple years. Street fighter being the cash cow it is got some kindness but even that series had dlc hanging out after the third version came out.

The Dragons Dogma 2 one was blown way out of proportion. Port crystals are not that scarce in the game and are not at all difficult to come by. Plus you're only able to buy 1 with real money, so it's not like the idea is to trick you into buying tons of them. You're also only able to place 10 in the game and you can get 6 per playthrough, and you can get more as gifts from other players.
@ruekurei88

So hold on....are you saying that the purpose of the DLC for BOTW was to sell the QOL features via 'sweetening the deal' with the extra content? They don't even mention the QOL features in the ad though and Master Trials and the extra armour seemed the whole point of those packs. They at least mentioned the horse saddle for the DLC. I figured it was a joke, but it's at number 1, which is kinda weird. I guess they could have given free updates for those features tho, I dunno.

There is nothing wrong with microtransactions. If you don't want to pay them, you don't have to, and if you don't like their presence, you don't have to buy the game itself. Not to mention that the games are the property of investors who actually put their money into the production, so they can price them however they want, because they are the ones who made the game get produced in the first place, not some redditor nobodies.

#1) Every fucking Ubisoft game ever. Pretty much every AC, Far Cry and Watch Dogs game have charged money for DLC "Legendary" pieces of armour and weapons that have no better stats that what you get for free in game. Now while they are purchased using whatever form of special currency is in each particular franchise, usually the only way to gain the forms of currency is by purchasing it.

When you think about it, arcade games were the first, and possibly the biggest, form of micro-transactions. How well you did on a game, and how many Continues you needed to use to finish said game, depended not only on personal skill, but also on how much you were able to shell out to keep going when you didn’t do so well. And personal skill was also dependent on the trial-and-error of, again, how much you could afford to put in any arcade game that you wanted to excel at. Ah, well. It was fun. 👍👍 Still is, for any retro arcades out there. (There is also the free arcades, where you just pay an entrance fee and play free arcade machines for as long as you want. Not sure if they’re still around, but that form of arcade business is another story.)
@savage751
@savage751 Месяц назад
Hmm never thought of it that way...there is a big difference though you don't OWN the arcade game so I would consider it more of a rental then a microtransaction

Zelda: Breath of the Wild was NOT the first Zelda game to include proper voice acting. Fact check please guys, your slip-ups with video game information is really amassing recently (and no, I still haven't forgotten about the whole FF III / VI thing). Admittedly, "The Legend of Zelda: Faces of Evil" might not be THAT famous (though with RU-vid nowadays and that game being the original source of many YTP's...) on a console forgotten by time, the Phillips CDi, it already HAD proper voice acting. Even Link was speaking there (and many assume the reason why he doesn't anymore is because he is so ashamed of his performance there....)
