In the era of one and done, first-year players rarely dominate the NBA anymore. Even the generational talents like Lebron, Kobe, or Doncic need a year or two to get accustomed to pro basketball, and become the top players in the league. However, there are exceptions to this, and we’re going to discuss players who dominated the NBA in their first year.

I avg more points than Wilt in his Rookie Season I averaged 40.9 PPG 10.5 RPG and 23.9 APG 6.7 SPG and 0.9 it helps when your playing with good scorers and the best scorer is injured for 72 of 82 games EDIT: I was MVP ROY DPOY Al Star MVP 3 point contest champ #1 Pick and a scoring high of 68 points and a Finals MVP and Champ on the Knicks who acquired Damian Lillard in a trade before the season started but had a torn ACL in 10 games after the season started so I lead my team to a 64-18 Record and 16-0 Record in the Playoffs with Lillard who recovered in time for the semi finals but averaged only 15.9 PPG I avg 39.7 PPG during the Playoffs as a Shoting Guard/Small Forward

@Nuvendil
@Nuvendil 3 года назад
Fun fact: when Wilt entered the league, he immediately shattered the single season ppg, rpg, and mpg records with 37.6 ppg, 27 rpg, and 46.4 mpg. No one has ever surpassed these numbers in any season - except Wilt, who beat all three his very next season. Bonus: by the end of his rookie season he already had more 30-30 (30 in two categories) games than anyone has ever had in a career. The second most in a career is Walt Bellamy with 4 and then Russell and Pettit are tied with 3. Outside of Chamberlain, only 31 30-30s have been achieved. Wilt had 25 in his rookie season alone. He also achieved the 40-40 - which no one else has done - 4 times that year. In other words, Wilt could have died in the off-season and he would still hold multiple unbroken - and some outright unbreakable - records.

5:38 Actually, both Wilt AND Nate Thurmond COULD "defend his sky hook" - Nate by keeping Kareem out of his comfort zone more than blocking it, Wilt by BLOCKING it occasionally AND keeping Kareem out of his comfort zone. There were others that also blocked it - but usually only once or twice ever other than Wilt.
@idkaname5860
@idkaname5860 3 года назад
Yes have you seen the clip where he blocks his skyhook twice in a row
@bricefleckenstein9666
@bricefleckenstein9666 3 года назад
@@idkaname5860 The first block was on a jump hook, not the Skyhook - which was impressive for how HIGH Wilt had to go to reach it, but the ball goes right back to Kareem making it a not very effective block. It was also arguably uncalled goaltending, but was right on the borderline of being so making the possibly missed call very understandable.. The second block DID appear to be of a Skyhook - and went 50 feet downcourt and apparently out of bounds, again impressive but NOT all that effective as the Lakers got the ball back AGAIN. Why yes, I have seen - and cited before - that clip. I prefer the various clips where Happy got hammered by Kareem on a block, then Wilt got ticked and WENT FULL ACTIVE WITHOUT HOLDING BACK for one of the very few times in his career - and SCHOOLED Kareem and the rest of the Lakers for the rest of the game.

7:34 I believe that 32 game turnaround is STILL #4 on the all time list (behind the Spurs twice and the Celtics 2007-8 team that improved by 42 in one year, after a MAJOR multi-player shakeup) - but the Celtics did it pretty much only with Bird, the other teams had multiple "name" players involved.

Thanks for the unbiased, informative, take on the 10 bet rookies. I just watched another video on the same subject, where Jordan was placed number 1 over Wilt, at number 2. They gave each player's rookie stats, before their highlights and descriptions. Jordan had 28 ppg and 6.5 rpg. Wilt had 37 ppg and 27 rpg. How about that???

@@reuvenroslynesq8954 Jordan's rookie season Bulls were no contenders, if I remember correctly. Rebounds matter, whoever gets them. The more rebounds, the more possessions. 0:54 If blocks were counted during Wilt and Bill's era, Wilt would PROBABLY be the all time leader - but Bill would have been arguing the point, just like on rebounds and MIGHT have been #1. They'd probably own almost the entire "20 best seasons" list for BPG though - kind of like they own that list for RPG (Nate Thurmond did sneak in ONE entry, and might have managed the same on BPG). The REAL all time blocks list would probably be Wilt, Bill, Kareem, then Nate Thurmond and Hakeem fighting it out for 5'th (and Nate MIGHT be as high as 3'd). On the other hand, Wilt's rookie year is STILL #4 on the all time list for POINTS per game - and the top 3 are ALSO his, along with one other entry in the Top 10 (I think MJ and Hardin might have dropped that one as low as 8'th).

Larry Bird however got overlooked for Mr Basketball - a really bad decision in 20/20 hindsight, but in fairness he WAS somewhat of a late bloomer.

The REAL debate was between #1 and #3 that year - Hakeem vs MJ ALONE made that one of the most "stacked" drafts of all time, and Houston needed a great center enough that Hakeem was the RIGHT choice for them even in retrospect. Hmm, the "more folks call him the GOAT" vs the only player to take a team to a Championship with NO other future Hall of Fame members? Both generally considered Top 10 all time players? No he didn't - as he mentioned, Larry Legend and Magic had careers that were pretty intertwined. Did you even watch the whole video? Larry is THERE.

I'd call it a tough choice overall, but probably would agree - having seen both of them play.

You are correct, all of the centers back then were 6-5 or less, midgets like Willis Reed, Nate Thurmond, Walt Bellamy, Zelmo Beaty, Felton Russell, and then later Elvin Hayes, Bob Lanier, Lew Alcindor, and the shortest of them all, Wes Unseld was only 6-2.
