DESCRIPTION
There's a TON of misinformation floating around about guitar strings, so we compiled the top 10 guitar string myths we hear most often, and went through them each point-by-point. I think a lot of this misinformation is due to the big string brands really not offering players a ton of insight into their strings, and as such players have had to fend for themselves. Well, that's a problem we're excited to help solve.

is a .68 string stronger than any string smaller than a .68 string?
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy 6 лет назад
Great question! No, not necessarily. Core thickness has a lot more to do with strength than anything, so it all depends on the core to cover ratio employed. For us, our .060 would be strong than our .068 as it has a thicker core, do there being only one wrap around it, where our .068 has two.

"Stainless steel strings eat your frets" I use stainless strings on my Rickenbacker basses and see no unusual string wear. Perhaps it's just the brand or the string vs. fret material? I know there are different grades of stainless and different compositions of fretwire. Maybe some are less compatible than others?

Just thinking of playing .13s in E Standard seriously made me wonder if just chopping my fingers off would be worse! Great info, guys! I really appreciated the heavy strings tuned lower thing. It doesn't put any more tension on a neck than usual, yet people always think it does and when you're neck deep in the metal community forums it is a horrible thing to have to try and explain!

That's something I've been having issues for about a year or so. I feel like truss rod and saddle height only helps in string height and scale length of a guitar and moving saddle front and back helps a little bit in string tension.

"Silk & Steel" strings have silver plating on them, that's the only different between plain strings I know of(that I didn't see mentioned here). I used the 11.5 from an old "Silk & Steel" set I have(for my acoustic) to replace a broken one on my electric, and I don't think there was any difference in sound, but there was minute difference in feel.
@Stringjoy

@@Stringjoy On my Martin & Co. Silk and Steel M130 package, the description on the back for plain strings is "Silver plated Steel" and for the wound "Silver plated Copper on Nylon & Steel". One set I have I opened years ago to use a string out of, and they've all tarnished in that same distinctive silver oxide manner. As someone very familiar with metals, I can guarantee that these Silk & Steel strings are all coated in silver. Again, as to sound, it doesn't really make a difference.

Scott, in your general experience, how heavy of strings gauges can you go before nut slots should be modified/widened? I don't want to modify them on my Les Pauls. I know every guitar is different, but do you find that Gibson Les Pauls can accept, say, 11.5-54 naturally?
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy Год назад
It all depends on what they're cut for! I know I have put 10-52s on my Les Pauls and seen the string push up just a tad (but not an unacceptable level) out of the nut slot. Ultimately though, you can get some tools from Stewmac and mod your nuts very easily!

What would you recommend for an acoustic guitar where I have a hand full of songs that are in D, and Eb Tuning? At this time I tune to D, then use a Capo to play the rest in Eb. Currently have 2 Acoustics... 1 is in Standard, which most songs are played, then 12+ songs are either played in D or Eb. Really do not want another guitar for just 4 or 5 songs. Play Acoustic Electrics, Takamine & Taylor. Takamine is the one I tune down.

Yes, but does the gargantuan spool you build your strings come from the same foundry?
@Stringjoy
@Stringjoy 2 года назад
I think our heaviest spools weigh about 22 lbs so not quite gargantuan 🤣. Tracing back materials, before it lands to us steel is made into rod stock, then broken down into thick wire, then drawn into very fine wire, which we then use to make strings. Like we talk about in these videos, ultimately there are not huge differences in plain strings between the US-based manufacturers, except for how the manufacturer QCs, stores, and ball-ends their wire which do matter a fair bit. Wound strings are where the larger differences lie between US-based string makers.

If anyone believes taking off all the strings will cause neck problems, either need to watch a guitar built, and learn how to adjust the neck for proper feel across the neck, and how to set intonation, or…. Quit playing…. It is far too dangerous of a hobby for those who would not even understand good tuning and stretching habits prior to ever playing….

interesting..good to know...I ask this only to hopefully put this rumour to rest...So Stringjoy owns their own manufacturing/machines etc and manufactures all their own strings. Stings are not made by a 3rd party? Sorry to be so specific, but I know the response will be something along those lines.

While I appreciate the effort to put the rumor to bed, it doesn't really matter. I get people that email me about this every single day and no matter what I tell them, they're convinced they know far more about it than me. Come with me to a trade show sometime and watch as I am regaled by older dudes who *know everything about everything* telling me about how there "ain't but one company who makes strings" or that they heard so and so makes our strings from their cousin so and so. I'm being a bit more forthcoming here than I probably should be, but honestly it gets really, really old. Please know I don't blame you for any of this of course, I'm just venting a bit, haha.
@pacificnwboy
@pacificnwboy 6 лет назад
i think part of the response you get may come from the fact that it's ambiguous on your website where/how/who manufactures the strings. if you go on GHS/DR/D'Addario/Pyramid etc...they use the fact of in-house manufacturing as a selling/marketing point. They are proud of it and put it out there. It doesn't seem to be addressed by your site at all, at least that I could see, and it raises questions. When you are paying $12 a set for nickel alloy strings (not pure nickel, which command a higher price due to materials) you want to know what separates them from $4 D'Addario's. If you are making all your own strings, that would seem to me, to be a selling/marketing point that would be prominently displayed/talked about etc... I think in general people would feel good about paying $12 a set if they are getting handmade strings by your company, not so much if they are rebranded/sourced strings. Just my .02

There’s 200 pounds pressure on a guitar neck under playing tension of a440 E tuning. The truss rod counteracts that with an equal force to keep the neck from bowing . To suddenly release that is not good , especially for any older guitars . I’m assuming your. Or a touring professional tech . Chinese cheap strings are made of some different kind of steel. Acceptable for chords but not for bending... My questions is about old strings. How does old string affect frets. Are they wearing fret more than the new strings and how bad it is? (when you bend a lot etc) Are there any string which wear fret less or more? Thanks for the video!
@Stringjoy

That's certainly possible-I don't know what sort of steel they would use, but it wouldn't surprise me to hear they were cutting corners one way or another to make them that cheap. As for the old strings part, great question! In general it wouldn't be any different *until* you wore down the nickel plating on the wound string wrap wire and got down to the steel, at which point your wound strings would begin to wear your frets more like your plain strings do.
