How to make a small bookcase. This one is made from Cherry. It is the ideal project for beginning woodworkers, and even experiences woodworkers will enjoy the clean lines and joinery.
I designed it with the golden ratio in mind. that is 1.618 times taller than it is wide, for the most aesthetically pleasing look.
It features dado and rabbet joinery.

I usually find that 11 to 12 inches is a good distance between shelves, it allows you to comfortably place hard back books with a clean space above to tilt them forward and out. I've been making bookshelves of necessity for years to contain my ever growing collection and always start by measuring my tallest book that way if it eventually ends up on that shelf it'll fit comfortably. I hope this helps someone

question for you...... if youre piece of wood can fit on a jointer on all surfaces why do you only joint one side then plane the rest ...im not critiquing im genuinely curious
@KingsFineWoodworking
@KingsFineWoodworking 6 лет назад
Good question. You joint the first face to get it flat. You take it to the planer to make the second face parallel to the one you just jointed. Sometimes boards are thicker on one side than the other. So if you just jointed both sides, then both would be flat but still one side would be thicker than the other.

Hi Josh, here is a link to the glue brush I use: amzn.to/2vzubmP It does have a chisel tip that works good for cleanup. But I like the fact that it's all silicon. When the glue dries on it, you just pop it off, and the bristles are clean and new again. Hey, thanks for watching & subscribing! ~James

Thanks for this informative video. Would this joinery and method of building work with a larger shelving unit, like 36-42" wide and 60-72" tall? Assuming a middle vertical piece would need to be added to avoid sag, so in that case I'd plan on a center piece that's dadoed on both sides? Would a double sided dado center piece have any strength left if I did it that way? That's a fair reduction in thickness.
@KingsFineWoodworking
@KingsFineWoodworking 3 года назад
It positively would. I’ve done very large shelving & entertainment center units that way.
@rachelsmith3398
@rachelsmith3398 3 года назад
@@KingsFineWoodworking Thanks for your speedy reply. That's some responsive support. Are your dadoes 1/4" deep to receive shelving? And if so, on my vertical center piece (on a wider bookshelf) I have dadoes on both sides, meaning I'm removing 1/2" of a 3/4" thick material. Is that remaining 1/4" enough as a center support? Thanks, KFW!
@KingsFineWoodworking
@KingsFineWoodworking 3 года назад
@@rachelsmith3398 In your case, for the dadoes that get cut into boards that go horizontally, I’d make those 1/8” deep. It doesn’t take much to lock in the strength. And the remaining wood will still be plenty strong enough. In the vertical pieces of your unit, you can go 1/4” deep (that what I do).

Kings Fine Woodworking Would you recommend changing anything up? Such as beefing up the bottom somehow? Anything decorative? Anything decorative or something that might provide more stability for the top, the front, or the bottom considering that I’d be taking what you did in this video (the incredible job you did ^_^) and scaling it up?
@KingsFineWoodworking
@KingsFineWoodworking 4 года назад
I think it would hold up no problem unless you tried to put a set of encyclopedias of the shelves. Those are very heavy. If you planned on something like that you might double up the shelf thickness. But otherwise it would work great scaled up as is. As far as decorative, you can get as fancy as you like. You might do a google search and find bookcase ideas you like that you can incorporate. Although, maybe don’t deviate too far away from the basic shape unless you have a little more woodworking experience. Good luck. :-)
