Uncut Onyx can be achieved from a few different bosses and methods as well, so the item itself is still very obtainable but getting it via gem bags is what is so rare.

@@LinkLich the only reason it dropped was because Molten Core was made literally one week before WoW was released in 2004. The loot tables on the bosses were messed up so that you could get most of tier 2 for like four months of all the MC bosses, not just Ragnoros. Noktyn got it because it was basically viewed as trash despite being a one of a kind legendary. Blizzard even hot fixed the bosses and removed it from all loot tables within hours of him getting that necklace.
I dont think developers put any real thought in just how tough their drop chance percentages actually are...they just throw a number in there and think "yeah that seems pretty low but doable"
Oh for sure. It’s becoming more apparent than ever that most devs don’t even play their own games. Which I can understand I suppose. I mean you work on the game for a living, all day, which makes me imagine their drive to play is minimal at best
Exactly, for example 4% is a low drop rate, but when you have dozens of OTHER things and that all have their own seperate chances and each can appear multiple time sin the same loot drop....that 4% becomes more like
I love the random stats of how I could die sprinkled throughout this. It reminds me of that chaos theory? Like the calculation of an unbound book being thrown in the air lands perfectly in order in a stack.
Not sure if the onyx for OSRS counts since you can get it pretty commonly from many sources. Sure the gem bag method is mega rare but that doesn’t make it an item that people “never unlock”
The point of that entry is specifically getting it from the gem bag, he’s not counting any of the other methods (like if it were terraria calamity he’d only be counting getting the rod of discord from a chaos elemental and not buying it from the wizard in the hallow.
Feebas from gen 3? It's only available in a small number of random water tiles on a long river and waterfall. Oh, and even on the right spot its odds are low enough you might miss it anyways.
3:02 Wait, the Axe was that rare?! My goodness, I was such a noob back in WotLK, I could have sold that on the Auction house for more than enough gold to purchase my riding skill, yet instead I had it vendored for a couple gold thinking I was rich! >_
In old school Runescape you can get onyx by trading tokkul, which can be grinded slowly pretty AFk, or you have to beat jad which was Runescapes hardest boss for a long time.
When I saw the title I didn't think it would be on this list, but Final Fantasy 11's Excalibur sword is up there. Thank you Gameranx. FYI, there's many other weapons and items in that game that have chances to obtain that are so low, it's damn demoralising 😂
No kidding. I was one of the lucky ones to have a Kraken Club in the level 75 era. If you add the odds of also having on the same character: Leaping Boots, Empress Hairpin, Defending Ring, Vivian Ring, Vilma's Ring, Assault Jerkin, Joyeuse, Ochiudo's Kote, entire sky and sea drop sets, about a dozen rema weapons, most of the aforementioned were pre-99, the statistical odds of having all on one character were extremely low.
One guy was casually trying to sell a crate-o-matic in swtor a few months back in fleet chat, only for the steep price of 10 billion credits. No surprize it didnt sell but still. If you do manage to get one it's worth it's weight in gold if only for the rarity.
I just finished a Final Fantasy game and watched this video to calm down and it has two Final Fantasy games in the first four entries... I mean, it's not surprising. Final Fantasy has always been great in making things ridiculously rare and / or grindy. And as with all of the things in this video, you can shrug or laugh about it because they are not necessary at all. Also, the jokes in this video were HILARIOUS. :D Great one.
100% Agree. Been playing thru all 3 of the Final Fantasy 4 games on Steam; and in each game, you need to find 4 items with a Drop Rate of "0.4%" for an Achievement... on top of the 5% chance that an Enemy would even drop an Item in that Encounter; AND dpending on the game, having other enemies in the Encounter lowers the odds if they don't share the same drop pool... which makes them take many, many Hours to get...
@@yeetmachine1973 and yet i have been playing since launch and have probably over 20k hours in it and have NEVER found anything over JAH runes doing trav barb stuff lol.
Over 15yrs ago I played FFXI and it's the only MMO I raid grinded hardcore, peak endgame (6hr+ Kirin fights n whatnot), and a couple people in my dynamis linkshell had their classes relic weapon gained the way your ment to. Literal years of coin and other material collecting. One of them being Excalibur. I remember when our tank got his sword and used the weapon skill attached to the sword for the first time we as a collective whole were somewhat disapointed with it lol. Low damage and not very flashy. If you wanted your classes final weapon skill back when the lvlcap was 75 you had to get your relic weapon which back then they took years running dymanis 3 times a week to gain the materials, unless people helped you by giving you the materials they gained. I still consider my time on FFXI to be the most memorable MMO experience, esspecially when it was at its peak in the mid-late 2000s. Even though you had a 1/20000 chance from fishing to get it at that time, getting it the correct way was no small feat. My dynamis had 3 maybe 4 people who had their relic weapon and there were less than 10 on the hole server including the JP players.
I never looked up drop rates for Czerka-crate-o'matic in SWTOR, but I knew it was really rare. I am doubting that 1 in billion chance though, as there were plenty of them back in the day sold in games own market. I found one myself in 2017, I still remember the exact mob it dropped from. Got the achievement too.
I think the difference is the crate-o'matic "billion" encompasses several different things. You could get it from mobs, treasure hunting and a few others. So the original 1 in a billion was based on 2 people finding it in 2 billion loot checks, which is still rare, but is more common than it sounds because a single perso could easily get 500+ loot checks in an hour of gaming. So if a server had an average of 500 active people all day long (not the same ones, but consistently 500 players), you'd expect one to drop every 23 weeks on that server.
Regarding Excalibur from FFXI...............depending on which of the Arhturian legends you read the sword was returned to the Lady of the Lake, so getting it by fishing isn't that far fetched.
Not sure if the chances have changed in resurrected, but I did end up finding a Zod rune. The reason people want it is not because it makes things indestructible, but because it is used in some OP runewords.
@@Shreepsy I wonder if if it was part of the stuff my neighbor gave me. He'd been playing it since it released and convinced me to buy the battlechest.
Pretty sure the Crate-O-Matic drop rate was raised at some point. Yes, it's rare, It's just not THAT rare lol. I knew of two seperate people who had it. You could even trade it, use it to get the achievement and trade it again.
The only thing to be noted is in Diablo 2 you can craft runes from 3 of the tier below it. This only works up about 1/3 of the way the rarity but in ladder all runes can be crafted. At the end of ladder when characters moved to the normal server they would just dump their gear and then start a new ladder character. Finding a zod rune may be difficult but the gear you’re trying to make with it is much easier to find. Non ladder was pretty saturated when I stopped played a few years ago.
it may be nitpicking, but research a little more some of this stuff.. D2's Zod Rune - no one used it to make things indestructible lol (i know some ethereal items with it can be good) but 99% of time it was used for some broken runewords Breath of the Dying and Obsession or simply traded because it was so rare.
@TheZoenGaming says he wasted it on a regular sword because he didn't know it was rare. He's in the comments somewhere (2 above you on my screen.) I'm sure he's not the only one.
Getting an Angeling card in Ragnarok Online is probably the rarest thing I ever got in a game (0.01% drop rate from a boss that only spawns in a handful of places and only once every 60-90 minutes)
Man so many fond memories of playing old school runescape with my siblings. We only had one computer at home between 4 kids so most days we went to the local library so we could all play together i vividly remember geting my character dem n slayer from the beginning lvl 3 all the way to lvl 68 and this took my at least 2 years of playing in my free time in middle school
“You got a better chance of being eaten by a shark, being killed by falling furniture, and winning the lottery at the same time”. Idk why I thought this was so funny 😂
10^312 is such a ridiculous number you cant even imagine it. Not even close. For comparison I believe the amount of atoms in the observable universe is like 10^80. Our minds did not develop to be able to comprehend numbers even at the level of 10^80. Hell a lot of people can't fully grasp numbers like 100 billion or a trillion.
The special cosmetics that are in the final chest received for completing map meta events in Guild Wars 2. I have been playing since launch, the cosmetics are from the second expansion, and I have only seen them drop twice. Thousands of runs of the events with 100 players per map and I have seen it twice.
I only just found my first Zod after 20 years of D2. I have had them before from trading online and for weapons and what not. But finally found it myself running my FoH pally on single player through hell in a tomb of Tal Rasha. (Play through not farm.)
IDK what you are talking about man, I did a quick calculation for all of these and it came out to a 50/50 chance every time. Either you get the drop or you dont on all of them. You're welcome.
Sword of Kings in Earthbound is the one that comes to mind for me. Even that one playthrough ages ago I actually got it still feels like a fake memory. Putzing around Stonehenge like an insane person.
This is why I like mods. Games are supposed to be enjoyable and not a waste of ridiculous volumes of lifetime by way too many individuals, over some pixels.
I agree. It's like trophies in video games. They're designed to make you play a game longer than necessary because devs feed off of people's narcissism. Look how many platinums I have. It's always a look at me type of thing.
@@emilybaxterthecartoonywitc1805 I agree... I used to be some sort of a trophy hunter and there really are lots of people that don't care about enjoying the game at all, they just want the platinum; they don't even go for the 100% 🤦 I still care about completion, but it's more like a chore than a challenge for most games nowadays
I'll watch the list first. But I agree on both sides. I actually like this hard rare unlock if they are not mandatory, because then the dopamine rush that hits you is incredible. On the other side, if something is mandatory/required and has that low of a drop rate, then they can f off.
Many of these are online games so you can’t do that. The whole point is for them to be rare and the mindset of “it’s in the game so therefore I must be guaranteed to get it with little effort” is incorrect
As a Diablo2 enjoyer the facts about the zod rune drop rates are extremele overexaggerated. And its not as powerful as people say and its cheap in the "gray market". I got multiple zod rune drops and i have never used a bot in my life because i just love the game. Also you can target farm runes in some spots where the chance is 1 in 3.5k (thats small but not 1 in 3mln) ^ ^ P.S. I have never been struck by lightning ^^
I tried getting that bow for a few hours. If you have the switch version just play the bonus dungeons until u pop off. It takes like an hour it’s worth it
Used to play phantasy Star online so much when it came out that I believe i had over 1000 hours playing it. Went through every difficulty and I think I leveled up to 150 at one point. I do remember getting that wand and since I couldn’t use it I sold it or stored it. Didn’t know it was rare.
If I remember correctly, something like 213 riddler’s trophies to be found. Less than 50 of them can be found throughout the main campaign, and it’s awful to search for the trophies with unhelpful tips and the dark setting.
Yeah I actually found the trophies and the secret ending wasn’t worth it smdh not gonna lie I used a guide got tired of looking for them but in every other Arkham game I found them all even origins so felt obligated to smdh
Excalibur in FF XI feels like a tongue-in-cheek stab at WoW from a contemporary standpoint, and the ridiculous crap some fanatics (myself included) came up with on obtaining Ashbringer prior to its official introduction. One such red herring thwt was found in some REALLY obscure in-game lore implied the chance of finding more clues or starting a quest by fishing in a very specific pond in Eastern Plaguelands foe a very rare bit of obtainable loot, which would ultimately lead to the sword. This would have coincided about with the timeline he's talking in the video
Excaliber being level 70 while cap is 50 is another joke, saying you're not worthy, if you were to try pulling from the stone it wouldnt budge. Brilliant!
There was never a documented time of it happening, and I read that a developer stated that the files said noone ever pulled it out of the fishing spot (northern lake in Jugner Forest I think?), but I'd like to imagine the first few months or so when FFXI was new a Japanese player randomly fishing and got it.
Ah yes. Pendulum of Doom. The item I am always reminded of in these types of lists. I've had 3 total and I vendored all 3. Never occurred to me that it had any value cause it was ugly as sin. That's my luck though. I have lost count of how many times I've been in a dungeon transmog farming/making gold by vendoring drops (I don't care how bad that money making is, I did it cause I enjoyed it while listening to stuff in the background) and a mount that I didn't know existed/didn't know came from that dungeon or raid dropped. In one case I mentioned it off hand in guild voice chat, "Huh, I didn't know a mount dropped from this boss." and when I said which one a guildy who had been counting his attempts said he was on attempt 2500 something. I got it on my 5th run. Hurricane was the one bow I found like 9 times in Vanilla while just killing stuff in Plaguelands, I believe, near the cauldrons. But I didn't know it had any value and just vendored them, I rarely used the AH in Vanilla and BC and was clueless. But I spent over 12 hours farming bears to get the one Epic BoE axe to drop and never got a single worthwhile drop the entire time, cause I wanted it too much. But if I know that it exists and want it? Not happening. Will never get it. I also torment one of my friends in EVERY fucking videogame we play. He will be off doing something, I'll ask what he's up to cause I'm bored and he'll tell me he is faming this or that item. I will ask where and how to get it and then will go and get it within 10-15 minutes after he has spent 4+ hours farming it. Terraria rare drops are a prime example of that happening. But it happens in anything and everything that has rare drops of an equivalent.
When I was taking biology in college, I learned about the chances of sentient life evolving (eventually) from single-celled organisms and the only thing on this list that even comes close was the guy describing 40 onyx gotten from 40 bags. I believe she said "it's a more reliable chance to set your laundry to dry in a dryer and open it to find every piece perfectly folded exactly the way you want it." I liked this video, it was really interesting.
My luck is so bad, when i see the odds of getting something i multiply it by 250% that usually tells me how long it will take to get it. it's pretty accurate. for me at least
THe monster hunter grind is actually one of the reasons I started to stop playing Monster hunter.. To go through a 15-30 minute run to NOT get the item your looking for, for an upgrade to a weapon... It was mentally exhausting. I can understand maybe 2 or 3 times, but there's a limit...
The seitengrat was my first thought upon seeing the thumbnail. I grinded for that thing for countless hours, and even attempted a crazy RNG manipulation glitch, and ended up messing up my save file because I forgot to manually save. I lost over 20 hours of progress. I just quit playing after that.
The luckiest drop i ever had was a Hexhunter bow in Rs3. You have a chance of a Soulgazer spawning an Elite version after killing it which then has a small chance to spawn a unique version after killing that which has a 100% chance of dropping the bow. Normally it takes around 30k Soulgazer kills for this to happen. I managed to luck out and a regular spawn droped it. The chances were around 1/1m, which happend around 3.5k kc.
LFG!!! An Old School RuneScape clip!! lol Yes, although the Uncut Onyx from a gem bag is a 1/100,000,000 chance, there are bosses that drop it at like a 1/3000 rate luckily!
I had a Czerka crate-o-matic in SWTOR. I believe I actually had two, but I'd have to reinstall the game to check. I purchased it from the market board though, I didn't actually loot it. It cost some amount of millions of credits at the time.
so fcking happy you put diablo 2 on here. SOO MANY people either dont know about or dont understand it. Zod is insanely rare but there are items in this game (non-legendary non-rune) items that can roll tons of different stuff and people look for VERY specific mods. Also some of the more rare items like tyreal's might or whatever can roll Ethereal AND have ranges on def and other mods. (maybe not Tyreal's specifically but yeah) there are items that people have found that are worth like 30k+ irl money based on exchange rates from places like JSP.
Rarest thing I ever found in a video game was Deathcharger's Reins in WoW. 0.9% chance of it dropping. I farmed Stratholme as a Hunter, solo, for about a week and a half.
@4:14 FFXI was before my time but when i did play the game for like a year i heard of people spending IRL money on getting that sword. Then shortly getting banned for breaking TOS rules 🙃
Curious to see the Zod rune in the list, when I was playing d2, I was very young, and for me the most impossible rare thing to get (in my head, no maths involved) was the Anihilus.
For me, It was trying to get the BIS Druid Bear tank Trinket, the "Badge of Tenacity" in Blades Edge. I spent 5-6 Hours a day for 3 months trying to get that f*****r to drop. Even Alliance players would come and visit me, emoting to ask how it was going! I eventually had to quit playing for my sanity and the risk to my actual marriage, I was that obsessed. But if you needed the best Bear you could get (I think it was almost essential for Gruuls Lair), then you needed that item. WIth full raid buffs, food and procs, I could temporarily get my armor above 80 thousand, for all that there was no need to do so, but it was tenacious and so was I. Sods law, I came back to WoW 8 years later, and tried a Druid again, the sodding thing dropped in the first half an hour. I cried.
THe 40 Onyx ... Can't remember where I got this, but I think that there's a better change of a random high-energy particle emission corrupting your computers memory and transmuting into that bag, then it dropping... As a dev myself, I get the fun of such things, but as a (albeit self-inflicted) victim or such obsession, I worry that it hurts people far more than any joy it brings...
I didn't expect too actually have unlocked anything on any of these kind of lists but I actually had a lvl 39 Pendulum of Doom twink, so that gave me a nice nostalgia hit. Edit: And I've looted a Zod aswell! Ngl luck with RNG might be my one strenght in gaming, that BotD rolled a perfect 400% (which then made me a bit sadge I didn't splurge on a sup eth but whatchagunnado).
If you ever want to unlock the ff12 bow, fuzz finger gaming has an awesome video guide on how to do it. Unlocked it for each character. Absolutely devastating at the beginning of the game
FFXIV AND PSO references, this video was made for me FFXI is still kicking. I recently had to do the "Lilith" rematch fight 320 times to get even one piece of the "Malignance" armor she's supposed to drop (there are five pieces of the armor set) 😢😢😢😢
For additional context: The cost to do the rematch fight is 10 merit points. Each merit point costs 10,000 limit points, which you start to earn after reaching the maximum level. So, each fight is 100,000 limit points and I fought her 320 times for one piece of armor. That's 32 million exp 😫
