LESSON SUMMARY
Learning to improvise is both exhilarating and frustrating for jazz students. The exhilarating part is that as jazz musicians, we get to go beyond merely listening to jazz. We get to participate in making it! However, the frustration often creeps in when our improv lines lack an authentic jazz sound. In today’s Quick Tip, 10 Jazz Licks from Beginner to Pro, Jonny teaches 10 amazing jazz licks for students of all levels. Not only can you use these licks straight “off the shelf” in your playing-you’ll also discover why they sound so good! That way, you can apply the same techniques that the pros use to create your own authentic lines.

Hi Jonny. Thanks for these excellent tips and licks. I have played the piano all my life (over 50 years), and still I learn so much from you. Jazz has always eluded me, but I think I can do this with your help. Do you have these licks available to print? Backing tracks are where?

What's not intuitive is that your playing your licks in a scale (C scale) that's not always in the scale of the chord (Dm7). Can u explain?

I don’t understand how the second chord could be a G7 : I read F natural, A, B and E. Only B is part of G7. A could be a 9th, but the other notes don’t belong to G7.
@jeztaylor6055
@jeztaylor6055 7 месяцев назад
F and B are the guide/essential tones of G7, i.e. the 7th and 3rd. The A and E are the 9th and 13th respectively, so the colour tones. This is a common left hand voicing, guide tones + colour tones

7:11 - I assume you made a huge mistake in this video right? In your description for beginner 1, you clearly show the correct chords being played, D minor7, to start. yet, when you do a play through, you start on an F7 chord? Huh?
@dylan2926
@dylan2926 10 месяцев назад
You can think of it as Fmaj7, however, he's actually playing a rootless voicing of Dm7, more specifically it's Dm9 because of the E.
@pesto12601
@pesto12601 10 месяцев назад
@@dylan2926 well.. THAT is awfully confusing for a beginner lick and a bit unfortunate that he didn't explain that in the video. Thx for taking the time to educate me... this stuff isn't rocket science.. but hard to grasp for beginners!

@@pesto12601 It is rocket science actually, I've met Calculus majors that would rather do high end math than learn music theory

I refuse to play licks. I play a melody. I practice and just learn this for whatever. I am bored. I make my own melody. You don't have to know any of this. Just call on your inner Wes Montgomery.
@jordn1
@jordn1 26 дней назад
So you're saying rhat when he was a kid Wes Montgomery DID NOT copy everthing and everything he heard and could pick out on the guitar? Just want to confirm this addition to the 120 plus years of how the greats learned to play.
