Showing the refinements that I have learnt over 15 years of making this automaton. I started with basic materials and tiling and gradually built up my skills and equipment. This video shows that even basic builds can result in reliable work. The modern version isn't necessarily better, just different.

This is an extensive site built over the years showing all my automata and details of how I build them. I also sell plans and automata.

Thanks Philip! I sure am enjoying all your recent videos. It's amazing what a difference 15 years make. In another 15 years, you will probably be able to fly to the moon with your contraption. Warm greetings from Wishram.

Philip, I am a new automata maker. My first 4 are under construction. (It's too cold to work in my shop and I don't want dust/fumes in the house. So I have been unable to completely finish any.) I have been devouring your videos (you may have noticed your "Likes" numbers increasing! LOL!) Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Please know your work has had a huge positive impact and has given me great happiness and direction in my efforts. Thank you so very much.

Hi Denise, my workshop is pretty cold at the moment as well. It certainly slows things down! Thank you for watching my videos and your kind comments.

Hi Philip...I admire your work...and I appreciate the energy that it takes to create these videos. Thank you for sharing. It is interesting to see the differences in these two automatons. It's not really possible to create the same thing over and over, is it? As we create things we learn. And it would be irresponsible to create something not using our best abilities, wouldn't it? I am a great fan of your eyes! Perhaps one of these days I'll try to make a pair. I also appreciate that you just purchased a lathe. I'm in the process of considering a lathe. I'm questioning where I "want one" or "need one". As time flows I'm getting closer to "need one". Anyway...your videos and energy are appreciated. Cheers from San Diego. -Jim Coffee-

Hi Jim, I think a lathe is a tool that you don’t know how you managed without it once you have one. They open up so many possibilities in automata making. I originally bought a Sherline to replace a wood lathe. These are super little machines and you can find fantastic work on the internet that people have done with them. I had a phase of making steam engines though and in my hands the Sherline struggled with steel so I invested in a Wabeco 4000. I converted the Sherline to CNC and still use it to make batched of eyes, brass axle ends and crank handles. I now make quite a lot of smaller automata with tiny parts and the Wabeco is overkill for this so I now have a Proxxon 250e. I use the Wabeco for thicker stock as it has a 20mm capacity through the spindle. The Proxxon, with a quick change tool post, is a fantastic machine for most of what I do and I probably spend more time on it than any other tool. Whether it is making washers and bushings, boring through dowel, making threads and axle pins, etc. I am turning (excuse the pun) to it all the time. At the time of buying the Proxxon I also looked at Taig which look very functional machines.
