How I would start selling now and thoughts on how to price your creations.
I have automata and plans on my website www.lowbot.co.uk
I have been selling craftwork since 1985. If I started now would be easier to offer my work for sale but not necessary easier to actually get a sale. I talk about low cost strategies and the need for an integrated approach encompassing a sales channel, ways of raising awareness and also offering background "proof" about your work.
You can find further discussion on this video • I SOLD OUT! I know how...

i’ve been hoping you would do a video on pricing. So thank you very much. I would love for you to tell us about the TIME. The time takes you to come up with idea, design, prototype, how much time it takes you to make one and many you make in a run to make it all worthwhile. Thanks again Philip Brett from made in Dungog

Hi Philip... Thanks again for an excellent video. The way that you share with the automata community is to be applauded. I have accidentally stumbled onto another form of sales: I call it Performance Automata. Others would call it street performing, or busking. I've got a 20 pipe street organ onto which I've attached automata that I have created (a mini carnival and some musicians). I perform in public. Some folks leave tips. For me, it is a very rewarding experience...and I get lots of automata feedback. I also must design and create reliability...my little mechanized stories are expected to perform flawlessly for hundreds of hours a year. Anyway, thanks for your insights, thanks for your videos. I am learning from you and I appreciate it. Cheers

Thanks Jim. The first time you tried that must have been quite an excitement, like doing a craft show on steroids. I have noticed that public exhibitions of automata are popular. Something a bit out of the ordinary I suppose and enjoyable for all ages.

Enlightening video as usual! :) Etsy now charges $15 to start a new store - still very low barrier to entry but enough to reduce much of the spammy automated stores.

Another consideration for pricing . . . My mother was a photographer in her golden years, but did have a few items for sale in coffee shops, etc., and another photographer advised her not to price herself too cheaply. Basically, the idea is, if you price it low, then the quality must be low, but if you price it high, they will see the quality as high. And she sold more when she asked $150 than when she only asked $25.

Thank you for the contribution. Yes, perceived value is a fascinating topic. Particularly so with artworks.
