There are quite a lot of differences between Steel Division 2 and Wargame Red Dragon. Here are the 10 most important ones.
I will have undoubtedly missed differences, so let me know what you consider critical differences between the games in the comments.

WG:RD is one of the best strategy games I've ever played. If they would release a version that was easier to modify, that would really open the door for increased sales and customization. I hope SD will help them to embrace the mod community. The foundation is very solid, now provide some mod tools to help the community to diversify the game to be flexible and interesting to many different customers. It's rare that a company can profit from other's labors, but a good game with creator supported mods can really be a force multiplier for sales.

Would be great to create custom campaigns instead of modifying the existing ones that most times result in bugs crashes and disappointments - unfortunately so many conflicts happened since the 1990 - plenty of room for creativity

In SD2 your infantry can also surrender if they lose all their morale and there's no friendly command units nearby.

yea, same with tanks. As a result, you could just panic enemy superheavy and force it to surrender even to your non-at infantry.

This is the single most important difference IMO, very surprised he didn't put it up top. Your tanks may not have HP, but you can 'destroy' any vehicle in the game with basic infantry mortars if you just keep fire on them until the crew bails for lunch. As for infantry, call in arty or airstrike, and rush with a transport and there goes half the enemy frontline surrendered
@yesyes-om1po
@yesyes-om1po 2 года назад
@@fortusvictus8297 most modern engagements are super long range, so the odds of you in an abrams being able to wave to someone with an ATGM miles away that you "surrender" isn't very viable, and its likely you won't even know your fucked until you are, I'd say surrender only applies when you jump the gun on someone in an ambush and they have little chance to react, kind of like catching a tank crew on their lunch break.

As to the unit icons and the confusion, it's purely down to habit. It's very easy to see at a glance if something is a tank, an APC or a truck (so, the broad categories) Think about it in WG... If you're new to it, what the hell is a Nana-Yon Shiki or an AMOS? You'll have more people who are knowledgeable about WW2 vehicles than modern ones in general

I find the "standard" Icons ins SD2 easier to read, unlike in W:RD, there I always used Nato symbols. The only reason I left the gamey Icons on in SD2 is because I can see straight away what Tank the enemy has, not just that it is a tank, otherwise I would use Nato symbols there as well.

Vehicles do have HP but it is hidden (and can't be repaired). HE damage that happens close enough, and AP crits do inflict HP damage to the vehicle (heavy tanks have more HP than medium tanks , who have more than light tanks, who have more than Half-tracks. Not sure about tank destroyers' position in this). Eventually, too many crits or massive HE damage will destroy anything. If you zoom in on a tank that has been through a lot, it will look blackened and battered compared to a brand new one, indicating it's low on HP.

I like objectives mechanic of Steel Division more. No need command vehicles to capture sector, and you dont lose sector by losing 1 commander unit. I would like wargame with frontlin (or at least any unit can capture sector, without commanders)

correction to the first point the vehicles have hitpoints you just cant see them and cant repair them simple to know since king tigers have to pen twice to kill another heavy tank (which has 12 hp) while the is2 and kv2 only need 1 penetrating shot. they will just simply stay on that hp till they die and cant restore their hp at supply trucks. if an is2 gets penetrated by a tiger for example and kills the tiger afterwards the next tiger it encounters will kill it with 1 shot if the shot penetrates the armor

Dude, the scout plane you brought is probably the slowest plane in the whole WW2, at least on soviet side. Of course planes are much slower in this game because ww2 piston engined planes are no match for jets. But the thing you brought is remarkably slow even by ww2 standarts. It's also known for killing jet in Korean war by being too slow: jet just stall while trying to get aim on this thing.

I think 1 more major difference is the Frontline (the red & blue thing). In Wargame you need recon to see where the enemy is moving, but in SD i think you only need it to identify what enemy is pushing. Personally, this is something i kinda hate because you can't do suprise attacks on the flanks or something like that.

Scout units do not push frontline - you still can make spec-ops teams and infiltrate enemy lines. Frontline gives some info, yes, but only general one "something is pushing" or "someone is defending here"
@lithentondanarian8982
@lithentondanarian8982 4 года назад
There are quite a few Recon based decks in SD2, Recon units dont push the frontline and arent also subjected to surrender to my knowledge, though I could be wrong on the surrender part. There is one deck specifically that comes to mind for the Russians, it's an early version of Spetznaz and they get some seriously nasty Recon units that can sneak through your lines if unguarded swoop around and bite you in the ass, to say it only works against noobs would not be an accurate statement, I have seen these things done in 10v10's. Also when you consider that most of the people saying these kinds of games have usually come from the previous title or similair games like Wargame, the term "noob" should probably be used sparingly because anyone with a good tactical sense and basic knowledge of mechanics is quite capable of kicking anyone else's ass, it purely depends on how they utilize their forces against whoever they are facing.
@willemvandendolder2556
@willemvandendolder2556 3 года назад
Steel division tanks have hitpoints, they aren't shown, but it's the overall integrity of the armour so that it can still die to high explosive weapons even though they technically have zero penetration. It also counts when it is hit by any anti tank gun, even if it doesn't penetrate. This means that it takes damage over time due to the structural integrity being reduced as it gets hit more. This is so that you don't just sit tanks indefinitely under enemy fire, and have a proper reason to move them
@tiagodagostini
@tiagodagostini 2 года назад
But the damage is not binary like in RD. in RD any AP weapon effectively will deal at least 1 damage, so chepa units have a too easy time.

I don't think they have the license for it, I think the IP stayed with Focus Home Interactive, though yeah I'd love to see a not-wargame wargame with larger scope and more consideration for the nuance that's included in the SD games to be in, not just more arbitrary hitpoints based systems for something as cut and dry as, for example: modern tank engagements.

@@Donuthan If what you said is true then they should make their own ip(with hookers and blackjack :D). And in that ip use modern war or ww2 as inspiration not source in an alternate world. For me, there is one massive difference that just about kills Steel Division for me, and it's related to the unit icons. I am actually far more familiar with the weapons of WWII than modern. But I unfortunately can't really utilize that knowledge, because the unit icons don't include their dang names. I have to mouse over a unit to see what it is, and I just don't want to spend all my time looking for the one IS-2 I have in my sea of M4A1's. I also have a ton of difficulty seeing what unit I have selected. I'll click on a unit, and not even be sure he's listening, because the contrast in color between selected and unselected is so subtle. These two things come together to make the overall commanding my force such a frustrating mess, and it really degrades my enjoyment of the game.

in wargame red dragon you can chose more unit cards in steel division 2 no, in wargame red dragon you can make your own division from a variety of choices and this apply for every nation also you can add a bonification if your choices an specialization (armored, airforce, infantry, mechanized, spec ops) and increase the unit cars if you choice a early era (1985 or 1980) in steel division they limited all ze fund limiting the choices of units in "divisions" instead of putting all units for every nations and divide the choices in countrys. but why they do that i have no idea also they dont put the mighty pershing :v for the USA :v. but hey "new generations games are better" (not all the new generations are better), the game is nice but they can do better job with it.

Well, a BIG, BIG diference in Steel Division is that you can turn off that damned haze emanating from the contact lines so that you can see the battle field better even when you are zoomed out. A feature wich i dont know why was not patched into Wargame aswell? That haze ( shadow, whatever you want to call it ) that fills the capture zones in Wargame makes the game a strain on the eyes plus its hard to see the battlefield properly whilst you are zoomed out, game just looks ugly in a sense, you cant enjoy the grafics with that haze on. I see also that the forum on Eugen Systems went off, maybe someone can push the idea to the devs, i posted some time ago in the forum, but i see it was to no effect. A shame, i would have loved to play some cold war era games. Maybe some of you can contact them and have a better result regarding the issue. I hope someone else can see the problem i see.

Technically, helicopters as well as the related autogyros were used during WWII. However, I doubt we will see them used in Steel Division 2 as they were not widely used in Europe and I don't think the Soviets had any. The ABC decktypes are not a good way to balance. It might give a hint as to why if you realise that the wermacht categorised its unit readiness the following way: suitable for all operations, suitable for defensive operations, not suitable for frontline operations. Any formation that is capable of offense is also capable of an elastic defence. C decks are straight up worse than B or A.

Recon units don't impact the frontline and infantry combat is a pivotal point in SDN44 and SD2, you basically have to make educate guess on what type of unit you are up against since FoV plays a major role in SD titles which adds a layer of strategic depth to it. Also in SD2, the objective is to capture objectives (basically the RTS version of capture the flag similar to Battlefield games) rather than having the majority percentage of the frontline.

@@williamhutt2588 1. So your solution is to just guess and waste bombers on potentially nothing? That's also assuming that someone went to the extreme to just put a single unit to hold a frontline (no one does this unless they are playing against the most passive of passive players). 2. Making a bluff that you arent at a place is easy. Take an imposing unit like a panther and park it somewhere that's visible to the enemy but out of range of possible AT locations. It looks like you are prepping for an attack but you are not. You can also drop HE and smoke on known strong points to give the impression that you are moving to hit that location then hit a different are. Or you can get a breakthrough and send a very fast unit like a jeep to stretch the frontline but instead of moving units where the jeep past you hit the flanks of the front. It just sounds like you didnt actually play the game or you played stuff like 10v10 on a 4v4 map because all the same mind games you can do in wargame are possible.
