It’s worth pointing out, however, that a lot of them are pronunciation-based rather than meaning-based. For example, Spain (西本呀): “West class tooth” doesn’t mean much, but its Mandarin pronunciation - very roughly “shee ben yah” - is kinda like “España,” arguably as close as you can get within Mandarin pronunciation limitations.

My guess as to why people would be interested in passport and Canada : people in the US trying to find out if a passport is necessary when visiting Canada. I know at one time it was not. But, times have changed. For those interested Canada does not require a tourist visa for stays under 180 days. However if you are transiting Canada en route to Europe, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area.

FYI, the Chinese names of countries is usually just a transliteration into Chinese characters. Ex) Ireland 愛爾蘭 is pronounced "I-er-lan" England 英國 "Ing-guo", etc.

When I came to NZ from britian I was at least able to pronounce Maori correctly...

My great-granduncle was Senator Dwight Whitney Morrow, (father of Anne Morrow Lindbergh), and HAD TO INTERVENE during Mexican oil nationalising, before he became Ambassador to STOP THEM from making a direct MILITARY ACTION on the USA...

Also Maori fought for their language to be brought back, which was easier considering their full scale invasion by Europe was relatively late compared to many other countries.
