My life has become so much better since deconstructing from religion. Instead I now focus on the incredible gift of life, and knowing that the odds of us even being here and being conscious thinking animals is so incredibly rare in this universe, and yet we waste our time on fear and anger and and power, never giving thought to the inevitable reality that we will not be around forever. Enjoy your lives and deal with the reality presented to you every day. It's okay.

The idea that Christianity is a religion is a misconception on the part of secular people. Christianity consists of a very real and personal relationship with the living Jesus Christ, via the Person of the Holy Spirit. A religion, on the other hand, consists of a superstitious blind belief in a deity without any personal connection to that deity, and commensurately entails adherence to certain rules and requirements. There are no rule or requirements in Christianity as it consists of a personal relationship with God, spontaneously led by the Holy Spirit. So it's simply not a religion and has nothing to do with religion. If you are unsure of what I am pointing out here, you'll need to read your New Testament, and in particular the Pauline epistles.

Of a family of six three of us believed in a god and three did not. I don't know why that was so, but it was. From My perspective going to Sunday school and then church with my mother and brothers gave me no feeling comfort or purpose of why I existed. It actually threw up many questions that I increasingly saw as not being answered to my satisfaction by the religion. Once I became aware of all the other different religions with man being different derivatives of the type we followed. I formed the opinion than religion was made by humans for humans in the sphere where they lived and was taken to other places when they travelled. At this time, I also began learning more scientific content and, in my mind, fitted much better with the natural world I saw. We are but another species of animal and our destiny is up to us and nature. We have evolved so far in a short space of time when looked at from the geological history of our planet or even more so if we include the universe. Each organism on this planet or anywhere else is dependent on the environment they live in at that point in geologic time and if that environment shift to far and is outside our ability to adapt then we go to where every other organism goes that this happened to in the past and it is not heaven. I see believing in a savior as being a disadvantage because it may make people think that it does not matter if things go pear shaped, we will be saved in the end by the one I believe in and so we don't look to adapt to make our life and the life of future generations more sustainable. As I said we are like any other organism and we are in plague proportions now and it is damaging our habitat, but we are the only ones that can fix that. When a plague consumes all the resources it needs to exist nature deals with it and not in a kind way because nature does not have a conscious being, it does not know what fair or moral is, only we know that.

I think the basic problem and paradox for all human made religions - and all our other human made "hierarchical" master and minion systems, ideologies, groups and pyramid schemes ....is the notion of there being either (1) some form or need for hierarchical order, meaning and purpose for this unstable dipolar reality, cosmos and life..or (2) not! Which of course the latter (option 2) is almost impossible for many hierarchically conditioned, aspirarional or delusional humans to even consider, accept or want! Because lets face it most humans either want to be living or eternal gods and devils, or children of invisble gods and devils, or even artificially created mud minion servants or diposable toys of invisible gods and devils....All rather than accept that they are just tempory biological critters...that have no more real purpose or meaning than all other biology trying to exist! So of course many humans will always adamantly reject natural selection and evolution.... and instead pick, create and make up all kinds of prefered "master and minion" bullshit, fantasies, and fictions! Where they will have a higher or greater purpose, meaning, importance or significnce and alway be the centre or stars of their shows! ... or alternatively their conned and subjugated minions subjects and servants - used and exploited to build, maintin and defend different puppetmasters and their pyramid fantasies! While others also rival, plot, fight and compete to rise up, take over or detroy them! As for the moral argument, I believe that it is (barely) arguable that morals come from empathy, sympathy, and compassion. Is there an "objective" morality? No. Morals are subjective by definition. I think some people argue against that statement because they think that subjectivity is somehow inferior to objectivity. This couldn't be further from the truth. Subjectivity is how we _FEEL_ about things, it gives us strength and motivation. It grounds us to reality. When something is objectively true, it is pitiless. Reality doesn't give a crap about how you _feel._ But if something is subjective, it gives us passion to make things better. A morality that is based on compassion is boundless in our need to create a better society for everyone and everything. An "objective" morality, especially one based on the edicts of a bloodthirsty tribal war gawd is without pity, without mercy, and divides and destroys society.
@oldpossum57

Very succinctly put! Please note that, while à huma-designed ethical code should produce inner contradictions and moral quandaries (and in practice does so), a divinely-ordained system should be easy to follow and never result in qualms or quandaries. Yet clearly, folks following the dictates of religion are faced with moral quandaries. Of course, you do get nutbars like W. L. Craig. He defends the massacre of innocent Canaanite children by the Israelites because they were commanded by Yahweh to do so. It doesn’t bother him in the least that we can’t be sure Yahweh exists, that we only have the Israelites’ word that the Canaanites were wicket, thatwe don’t have any record of how the Canaanites felt about the invading Israelites, nor what their god thought of matters. WLC “assumes” that Yahweh accepts the Canaanite children into heaven, so their horrible terrifying deaths are actually a good thing. Yahweh could have calmly ascended them into heaven instead of the horrific murder, but I guess the Israelites benefitted from killing children? Anyway, nut bars like WLC exist.

No question that morality based on some rigid “divinely inspired” code is rigid, merciless, anti-social. Examples. Christian professor of Bible studies William Lane Craig defending genocide of Canaanites (using only one side’s account of the dispute), including the horrific, terrifying butchery of innocent children with edged weapons. Christian science parents allowing children to die agonizing deaths, refusing them medical care, even painkillers. Jehovahs Witnesses choosing death for children over transfusions. Moral codes all originated from cultural practices, and were later sanctified y religious mythology. The roots are in the instincts and emotions of the ape species H. sapiens. Culture refines them. Rational analysis can create law codes that are pretty fair. There will always be quandaries. We can hold two opposing opinions firmly. In practice, though, one has to give.

@@johnheaton5058 I have to say, as an outsider, the arguments that if ethics are relative, not absolute, there are no ethics, or that if the universe, life and specifically human life has no creator, then it is meaningless, have never seemed convincing to me. I would like you to admit that the idea that your faith and god(s) is the only one of thousands invented over the last ten or so millennia to be “true” is unlikely. Much more likely is that it is one of the more successful faiths and gods ones, though I note in decline everywhere but Africa. The Christian religion is one that requires the faithful to believe in absurdly implausible events like the resurrection of two-day corpses. Both you and I depend daily on the second law of thermodynamics, and I can’t accept your suspending it when it is convenient to you.For then the Muslims, Buddhists, and John Frum-ists can suspend it at will also. You know the term, “God of the Gaps”: your moral arguments for god(s) might have carried more weight at one time, but as we learn more about the functioning of the human brain and mind, more about animal behaviour, it appears to the scientific and philosophical communities that a far more accurate and useful model of human ethical behaviour can be developed within materialism…methodological or metaphysical. Not surprisingly, materialism predicts that different societies will tend to agree on basic ethical principles. There are not huge differences between the Quran and the Bible, for example. All tribal societies, like the biblical Jews and christians and the 7th century muslims will have ethical positions we now find repulsive: we no longer condone slavery, subjugation of women, or divinely-commanded genocides. (Your Wesleyan-Arminian friend, Wm. Lane Craig, does defend mass genocide if commanded by one’s god. His bible doesn’t tell us what the victims felt about it, or whether their god felt they should be subjected to genocide. Suspicious!) Now, modern evangelical Christians are in a bit of a bind: they claim that the Bible is inerrant, but they care selective about what ethics too follow. Clearly, christians all revise, selectively, which means their ethics is not absolute. Materialism also predicts that societies will have differences, and also that people can be reasoned with to expand the sphere of ethical equality. So, whereas your OT has different rules for Jewish slaves and non-Jewish slaves, and the NT seems to accept slavery, in most cultures today slavery is discountenanced, and international organizations are trying to end indentured labour. The sphere of ethical concern has expanded to include both men and women of all “races”, and all sexual orientations II the most advanced societies. It includes many animals , even the planet itself. Because ethics systems have their foundation in our instinctive life, it is no wonder that our principles come into conflict: we have moral quandaries where it is not easy to decide. But the religious, supposedly following a divinely appointed ethics, have the same quandaries. That case of the 10 year old rape victim who had to travel to a different state to have an abortion after her home state outlawed all abortion is a case in point. I don’t think many Christians felt good about condemning an innocent raped child to carrying a pregnancy to term at risk to her life as well as the fetuses. Certainly GOP leaders like Noem were squirming, trying to avoid questions.

A scientist bloke invents a time machine and goes back in time to kill his grandfather. Granddad wasn't a bad chap mind you, the bloke was a scientist you see and wanted to find out if he'd suddenly cease to exist once G.D. was no more. He did it like a proper scientific experiment, even killing a "control" subject before he gave Granddad the chop. (Mad scientist obviously, but let's carry on.) He hypothesized one of three things would happen. 1/ Nothing would happen because Grandma had been a naughty girl when young and G.D. wasn't his actual G.D.. His mother was genetically generous too. 2/ He'd come back slightly changed in appearance without G.D.'s genes because he still had enough genes from the unknown grandparent. 3/ he'd snuff out of existence with a loud "WHUMP" as the air rushed in to fill the gap where he'd been. He discounted this third possibility because it meant the future family photo albums also disappeared, along with his student loan records, birth certificate, passport and so on. Not very likely. From behind a bush he points the gun at granddad. "Sorry young chap", he says, "you're about to become a martyr for sc-----". He never heard the loud WHUMP. Good art is like a parable that makes you think. It doesn't end the thought process, it begins it. Keep up the good work. Cheers, P.R.

We have the same number of vertebrae as a giraffe for the same reason: we evolved from a distant common ancestor. In the giraffe, the vagus nerve travels 18+ feet to achieve its goal. Likewise there are 12 pairs of nerves with different destinations from the central nervous system, the vagus splits off in various places, some go to regulate the heart - so they need to go there anyway. It's a lot more efficient and robust to bundle these nerves together, than re-route individual ones Same design principles can be seen in plumbing and highway design. I'm a scientist, and agree with Leplace.. if you have no need of that hypothesis, that's fine. Personally I feel most people do. We know that everything we think is a model of reality.. nothing we conceptualise is real, it's a method of visualising an external reality (that appears consistent). Imagine a chair. But is it a chair?It's fire wood; it's a weapon; it's a dead tree; it's a door stop; infinately more but ALSO, not really just any of these things.. because we categorise things in our brain, usually based on function. Everything is a model but there is an external reality out there. Religion, especially that which has been politically co-opted, can be problematic in society. However, we can accept that religion is simply another model of reality BUT many religions accept that God is not definable and that what we imagine and see is not completely 'real' but simply a model. Reality, God, is something behind this reality that we experience. I read a great book (Christianity from the Ground Up) which really opened my eyes in terms of how a belief in God is actually quite a logical approach to life and (more importantly) is a good model. Can't explain it all here, but read this book - it is very logical, and an excellent read.

@@fibonacimike4110 Well, if you define faith like that, I and many an educated or academic Christian does not have such baseless or blind faith either. In fact all scientific research is conducted on the basis of faith, faith in constancy of natural laws, faith in voluminous previous research results or research results of related disciplines. This is done as a matter of pragmatism, just as we do in everyday life. Prof John Lennox, Dr Stephen Meyer, Dr William Lane Craig and Dr Frank Turek are all decent academics whose explanations on this topic are readily accessible. Sometimes faith in a scientific theory may be justifiable on available evidence but with increasing evidence to the contrary, maintaining belief in such a theory becomes blind faith. It is my assessment that within the last couple of decades abiogenesis has shifted into this category due in part to advanced knowledge of the interdependent vast complexity of the "simplest" single celled organism but more so the knowledge that life is information and code based, and at extraordinarily complex levels. Abiogenesis had some justifiable traction in Darwin's day but not now. Much of the scientific community resisted the evidence of the universe having a beginning because it gave credence to the bible. We are wise to be more explorative and balanced or multidisciplinary in our life just as the early scientific founders were. The God given discipline of science has worked wonders for us in discovering the mechanics of nature. Ultimate origins and purpose necessarily involve broader disciplines than physical sciences.

These are all good arguments from the point of view of someone who doesn't understand or even know the deeper teachings of the world's religions. Being a scientist, I had the same point of view. That is, until I decided to check and actually studied what those teachings are. Take on the primitive point of view, that god is some kind of being (maybe even a person-like one) that existed independent of the universe, is all powerful, and some day decided to pull the universe out of nothing. I agree this is a childish view, and has all the logical problems that are pointed out in the video, by this really intelligent man. Now in comparison take on the point of view of the religious teachings, after you have studied them thoroughly: There is no thing, not even a person-like god, that needs a cause to be. Causation is a principle within the physical universe. As is time and space. What's behind all that is "Nirvana", "Eternity" or "Nothing" depending on the cultural type of speech you use to describe it. What it means is the lack of any objective quality. It is pure potential. Like the surface of a mirror has the potential to reflect all shapes and colors, only because it has to shape or color of itself; this potential has the potential to take on any form or quality because it has no form or quality of itself (that's the nature of "potential", it is nothing, but it can be anything). Religions make it clear that this potential is equal to the "being of anything", the "feeling of I-am", or god. Which means that there is no god outside of the world who has created that world, and now there are two independently existing things: God and the world. It means that God and the world (or God and reality) are the same thing. God appears to himself as ourselves and as the world. Where god can be found is in the being of the world, and in the being of ourselves (which means consciousness or awareness), which are ultimately the same. Time, space and matter are just experiences withing that awareness, they have no independent existence of their own. To this point of view, the above arguments don't apply. I'm not trying to convince anyone that this is true. Just saying that it's what religions really tell us when we explore them deeply, and that this is very different from the naive and childish stories about God and the creation that have - for whatever reason - manifested in the heads of most people. And they are right to reject those stories.

Let’s see. There are some 3000 religions. Did you study all of them? A statistically random sample? Or (most likely) the one you grew up with? And studying it, did you ever note the completely implausible elements of it? You must admit, the second law of thermodynamics is pretty unshakeable, but the superstitious, credulous first century peasants* who told the stories gathered into your sacred story books claim on a regular basis that the second law is violated here there and everywhere. I think that there are a great many possible ways that those stories got recorded that do not require us to believe that space-time was violated *Please note that in reading the educated elites of first century Roman civilization, I find them superstitious and credulous as well.

For religion to be considered true, it would need to bear up under rigorous and sustained critical examination. In my opinion, it's seems more likely that humans created different concepts of God within the various locales that were roughly 2000 miles away from each other. By my lights, this seems more likely to be the actual truth than the putative Gods that people have been conditioned cradle to grave, to " believe. " ( belief: from " Lief, " meaning " to wish.") " Wishing makes it so, " is a nice old saying and good enough for many of us, but not for everyone.

@oldpossum57
@oldpossum57 Месяц назад
Not really. We all have to accept the universe, even though we cannot apprehend its realities directly. Gods, on the other hand, are very, very expensive (actually, infinitely expensive) bits of theoretical kit. In fact, if a theory includes an omnigod as part of its machinery, then both (a) theory is infallible and (b) the theory has no explanatory power, as it cannot forbid any phenomenon from occurring if gods wish it. So the two situations are by no means equivalent. One theory has nothing to say about the Realm beyond the universe, but can explain some phenomena in the Universe. The other deistic/theistic theory tells you all about the Realm outside the universe and the nature of (unknowable?) gods, but has no meaning, and explains nothing.
@Shannon-ij1pm
@Shannon-ij1pm Месяц назад
I have been thinking along the same lines as Mr Singer but I want to take it a step further. The universe as we know it is a vast collection of galaxies that radiate out from a single point starting some 13B years ago because we can see that far. But in my mind, our universe maybe only one of many similar universes, because the emptiness of space has no end, literally infinity. We simply can not see any light emanating from something that far away. I think this, because to imply our universe is the only universe because there is nothing beyond that boundary is to suggest the universe is finite. If space is not infinite, then it ends somewhere. So what could there be outside of a finite space? It seems illogical to think that there is an end to the nothing of space. What would that even look like? So if all of those universes exist outside what we can see, I don't see contradiction to say space is infinite as is time. If time is infinite, then it has always been, so no god was necessary to create it.

In physics matter and energy cannot make or direct themselves. So there was a time when matter and energy were made as well as time itself since measurable time can’t exist without a great amount of matter. This means there was a time when time was made in the not too distant past. This shows that every physical thing is the result of a Creation. Has the sun ceased to exist because it's 2024? Truth, especially supernatural truth, doesn't change or disappear with time, unlike scientific facts. I am not an educated person; but I am 76 years old with life experience. I believe that the most significant influence for belief in 'god' is inculcation. Inculcation is the instilling of knowledge or values in someone, usually by repetition. To inculcate is to instill or impress an idea on someone, so inculcation is the process of instilling or impressing ideas. Most people I know grew up in the religion of their parents. And too many were taught to fear 'god' or go to hell. I appreciate this circumstance, but I have evolved into a militant athiest with no regard or respect for ANYONE of "faith". P. S.
