I tried the the straw into the potato one, and stabbed my hand instead. Now I have a straw through my hand. Fortunately, if I hold it six inches from my face, it looks like I don't. Unfortunately, I poked a hole in my eye with the straw.
+Emy Girl It's not so much seeing a hole in your hand as being able to see through your hand. Normally, you're able to judge distance because you have two perspectives (two eyes) of the same object or visual that your brain can use to calculate how far away it is. When you do the trick, your brain ends up with two conflicting reports: one eye says you can see some object, the other says your hand is in the way. But since your brain doesn't have both perspectives lined up (so that it can properly judge distance), it just sort of gives up and blends the two together, and your hand becomes transparent.
When you pull the pencils out of the bag with water, it brings me to a comparison of pulling out a knife that is sticking through your hand. Same effect - a shower of liquid.
