I actually had a weird experience with this recently, I drove the newest car I've even driven recently, and something about how it's automatic transmission was set up meant that going down hill, it basicially always kept speeding up, there was no engine braking whatsoever in Drive without using manual mode to shift down a gear or two, it was really annoying, but I've found that a lot of people have no idea that you can even shift manually/hold gears in most automatics cars in one way or another, and thus they just always use the brakes to not speed up or go too fast down a hill.

The part about braking is on point. Working at a go kart track for 4 years, I learned to drive with my eyes. Meaning, I'm looking at what's going on in front of the driver in front of me first. Then, the driver's momentum or cars behavior. This is why i don't always brake when i see brake lights. Because there's a lot of times people will brake just to brake, without actually slowing down.

I realized the other day that my dad brakes with his left foot, and thus he leaves it on the brake pedal all the time, and occasionally he'll be accelerating with the brakes slightly pressed, making the brake lights come on as he speeds up. And of course, a lot of people who have never driven a manual, will do left foot braking all the time, and it's quite annoying to see, but yeah just like you say, because of bs like that you end up driving with your eyes, actually paying attention to a cars behavior on the road more than their random slight brake taps.

I agree some people don't understand the concept of engine breaking. Especially on motorcycles where the effect is multiple times harder because of the low weight, I regularly have cars almost crashing into my rear just because I released the throttle a bit. My 800ccm V4 engine breaks so hard I technically don't have to break at red lights, I would just need to downshift all the way to first gear but because of cars behind me I always lightly tap my break to trigger the light.
@Hiddenus1
@Hiddenus1 2 года назад
I'd say it's more about not keeping a proper distance. I didn't know that motorcycles slow down faster, but then again I rarely see any bikes around where I live, but I generally assume they're more dangerous (by not behaving like a 4-wheel would and general approach that driver is a "soon-to-kidney-donating idiot") and I keep larger gap between me and a bike. Since you drive on a bike, you're in higher risk being hurt, so I wish you safe travels and trust no one on roads.

@stevesamuel263

Engine braking shouldn't be used in the city tbh, the mental effort of judging distance from the car in front of you really adds up over a long commute in city traffic. Much better to just use your brakes lightly, the brake light keeps everyone well-informed and safe. Just cause someone CAN do something doesn't mean they necessarily want to or should. For example, I CAN manually shift between gears to maximize fuel economy on commutes, but I'd much rather just drive on auto rather than putting in the effort to save a couple dollars in fuel and wear after a long day of work.

Thanks for bringing up semi trucks. If I could add one, it would be: Don’t brake suddenly, ease your way to a slow and steady brake. Trucks cannot slow down as fast as cars, especially when we are weighing 80,000lb. But it’s not just for trucks sake, it’s so that the people behind you have a fair amount of time to brake also. Here are some things I would like to drop from my experiences driving in Dallas that really grind my gears: 1. Some drivers would rather pick near-death experience than miss their turn/exit. Seriously, how hard is to take few seconds to plan and prepare your route? 2. People who randomly steps on brake for no reason. Either they're too anxious, under the influence, distracted, or lost. To fix that, y'all need to get familiar with the road, never drive impaired, and plan your routes 3. Those on their phones while driving. Pretty self explainatory, it's more dangerous than drunk driving. Yeah, how would you like if I shove your phone up your ass for a full immersive mobile experience? 4. Going too damn slow on the highway. Like 20 below the speed limit of the highway. That'll make people to slam their brake and possibly ending in a crash. This'll also create phantom traffic jams behind as people will start brake chains. Too damn slow is just as dumb as too fast. If you cannot catch up with the speed of the highway, stay on surface streets. 5. Not turning on your headlight or having high beams on all the time. I mean most cars have dashboard telling you on these. And you can easily confirm this visually. So I don't get how people are so careless. When you tried to let them know with headlight signal (off and on quickly), they don't get it. These are what I experienced the most in Dallas. Stay safe y'all!

Lmao, I just crashed a couple hours ago🤣 Story: so I was late to work and the route I take is some backroads in the mountains (I live in Puerto rico) my dumbass was overtaking other cars, until there was one that did not want to let me pass when I was going yo over take him. So what happened was when I was going to overtake a corolla, he purposely went to the middle of the road and my dumbass still went to pass him but apparently (I didn't know) he stomped on the "gas" yo not let me pass so we were neck and neck. Then a service truck was going about 40 or more mph on a downhill so I wanted to change lanes but the corolla was next to me so I stomped on the brakes (going about 50-60mph) in a car without abs,anti lock, traction control (2002 eclipse) and I just kept going forward until I hit the truck... My 3g eclipse is now totaled, my back hurts so much I barely can walk. This is completely my fault, and I also told the police the whole thing was my fault.

Being in the metro Atlanta area you realized people can't drive here and are just inconsiderate drivers. Clogged up traffic by spreading to every lane without changing speed just so they can be the first at the light to drive under the speed or just not behind someone they are driving same speed as.

One of the mods I wanna do on my car is: make the braking and turn signal lights twice or three times brighter. They should come like that from the factory. They should be annoying and jarring so that they do what they were designed to do: catch the other driver's attention. Cars nowadays have those ridiculous lines along their head and taillights that somehow pass certification as turn signal or brake lights
@cwhitley.sawlabs
@cwhitley.sawlabs 2 года назад
Well the thing about most tail lights is they're designed to indicate both where your vehicle is in low-light conditions and whether you're actively braking or not. It's not so much the need to have them brighter (because that can actually be more dangerous than the OEM lights) so much as the need to have them be slightly bigger from factory to more clearly indicate what you're doing.
@miaa7968
@miaa7968 Год назад
I definitely agree that indicator lights need to be brighter. I pass all vision tests needed to get and maintain a license and even then, on a particularly bright day the indicators can be so washed out that situations like roundabouts become challenging because you cannot tell who is going where until they're practically in your face. I just give way to all vehicles coming from my right (Aussie road rules, idk if countries that drive on the other side flip this) even if they're going straight because it's so hard to tell until they've pretty much passed me. Really annoying because it slows me down and I don't want to hold up traffic.

@@MacTheHonse out of all the ones you listed the Veloster is probably the best choice. The FF layout makes it a stable and predictable car wich you can push to its limit safely. 2 things that are so annoying that I see every single day: when people change lanes AND THEN signal when they’re halfway over. Just don’t even signal at that point you’re already in the other lane! Also when people step on the brakes 12 times in 10 seconds especially when nobody’s in front of them. If you drive properly, your engine will slow you down as much as you feasibly need to. @TheApp9
@TheApp9 2 года назад
Absolutely, but not often switching. For example: I known a place where the left and middle lane are going together. The right remains. All „fast drivers“ go left. Thinking they can sprint in front of all. But when you not too early, not too late, change to the right lane, you can see them overtaking you. But when it comes to the specific point, it Stopps and you overtake 20-40 cars. But after this, when cars are accelerating and getting more space between them, it is time to wait for a big gap and change to the left.

And you can very obviously see that it was affecting his driving, whether that’s delayed reaction times or drifting into other lanes during bends. He deadass told me that he’d be even worse had he not used his phone as a fidgeting device. The worst part? His car not only had a phone mount, IT ALSO HAD CARPLAY. I’m driving myself from now on. I may have some rough edges to polish in my driving, but I sure as hell keep both hands on the wheel and keep my phone away or on a proper phone mount for directions…

2 more: when you back out of a parking space, "ease" out so that people can see you're coming out (don't just back out), and 2), when driving down the highway, don't ever jump into another lane immediately because the lane you're driving in has a stopped/almost stopped vehicle, leaving the car behind having to slam on their brakes to avoid smashing into a stopped car that was just "revealed" to them (usually with no signal)...

one time i was behind a truck with a trailer that wasn't plugged in, so their lights couldn't turn on. i could still easily tell that they were braking because it's not hard to see a car slowing down. brake lights are helpful but i never solely rely on them, i rely on the actual speed of cars. the main reason for this is because my car is very light and has good brakes, so if i start smoothly braking immediately when i see lights i still am way too far behind them because my car just comes to a stop quickly. i mainly just use brake lights as an indicator to be prepared to brake. this practice is very helpful when you're behind a vehicle whose brake lights aren't engaging for whatever reason

7:20 interesting point about brake lights. Apparently there's an error in some EV'S where if you use regenerative braking, the tail lights don't come on. So say you're crawling in traffic (but not slow enough for creep mode) and don't apply the brake manually, so the car effectively engine brakes. The tail lights don't light up. Meaning the car behind you, doesn't know that you're suddenly about to go from 30 to 10 or 0 in the next 5 seconds. Wouldn't be surprised if there is an increase in low speed nose to tails because of this flaw.
