Adrian Castillo How do you figure? Grayson was an acrobat, Todd was a street urchin that tried to steal Batman's tires. His dad was a crook that Two-Face offed before he ever met Batman, Dick Grayson's parents were murdered by Tony Zucco during a performance that Bruce was attending. The problem was that he was too different. He was hot headed, arrogant, violent, and reckless. Little known fact, Jason Todd was originally a red head. Batman had him dye his hair so that people thought it was the same Robin. This is later revisited near the end of the pre-New 52 series when he was partnered with Scarlet.
TheBlues32 the original Jason Todd origin is a rip off of dick's. The writers wanted Robin to stay in the batman books but dick was in the new teen Titans book. So they just created Jason Todd to replace him. This one was a part of the circus act the flying todds
Batman was a character who was meant to be for everyone as Bob Kane even stated "Batman should never be only dark and serious, as he and many superheroes were created to be slightly campy, all-ages characters, with stories that adults and children could simultaneously enjoy for different reasons. Batman The Animated Series is basically how he should be represented as Batman is suppose to be a character capable of having all kinds of emotions he can be a dark vigilant while also being fun to both watch and read about. Batman is also capable of laughing, smilng, and crackng small jokes. Writers today seem to take too much inspiration from Frank Miller's version who is far from the Idealistic character.
Batman 'wetting himself' wasn't a result of fear, it was a result of being exposed to intense heat from the exploding wall. Smith stated that he researched it and even firefighters have said that when suddenly exposed to extreme heats they have had a bladder spasm causing.. well, you know what that causes.
The adventures of the underground piss boy, that's you Bruce, you're the piss boy. Ok, all joking aside, I'm so happy some Batman writers aren't afraid to make him human. Some writers are so afraid of emasculating him by making him feel normal emotions or have normal limitations to his body that they make him unbelievably invulnerable. He's compelling as a superhero because he's human. His vulnerability is what makes him brave.
Batgirl isn't a surrogate sister to Robin. She's Commissioner Gordon's daughter who just also happens to work with Batman to fight crime. That would be no different than having a romantic interest in a co-worker, which while frowned upon by management and HR isn't creepy or inappropriate.
Sonny Joon That's why I said co-worker and not your boss. Yes a boss subordinate relationship, such as if it were Batman and Batgirl for instance (looking at you animated adaptation of The Killing Joke) would be inappropriate because of HR policies and potential sexual harassment claims in a workplace.
First of all, this badass superhero or anti-hero never started for children. I'm 14 but I don't mind this type of behaviour because my parents never hid stuff like this from me Now back to the main answer. Batman never started out as a kids superhero, the things that this guy has done in the early stages of the comic book series is insane. So yeah, this "hero" IS NOT for kids
@@ivandovranic1001 bro are you kidding? Do you know the fucking backstory for batman? His parents were murdered in an alley way of Gotham...DOES THAT SOUND LIKE A KIDS STORY TO YOU!?
Yeah everything on this list was basically only inappropriate for like 6th grade middle school, there's TONS of things throughout Batman comics that would've possibly dwarfed the majority of these, if not every single one
@@geijienduro7610 yeah like the fact he refered to the killing joke girl as "a teen girl" and not Batgirl/barbara gordon who was also pregnant with her and batmans baby when joker shot her.
You fight a megalomaniac insane psychopath. It is already a wonder that there is no rape involved when lesser criminals have had same charge in real life.
Honestly depends on what you consider crossing the line of rape, he undressed her completely and took photos of her as she laid there paralyzed. I get the feeling Joker would probably at least slide his hand across her body like a creep, you know how he is.
JoaquizzleTwizzle I don’t think the joker is a very sexual being. Due to being the psycho narcissist he is, I feel he’d think rape was beneath him, rape of the mind is more his style ?
Mango Nectar Batman was a kid’s comic from the mid 40s until O’Neal and Adams arrived. He didn’t start that way, but they introduced Robin and got rid of the killing to make it kid friendly.
But the idea of the bat family is that they're all close to each other, like a family. Yeah they're not related, but it just seems weird that Dick and Babs had a thing
lonewolf61ize Where did he say that? I heard he said it in an interview once but I can’t find the source. It would be much appreciated if you could point me in the right direction.
Perhaps Barbara Gordon wasn't raped, but stripping someone naked and photographing them without their consent is certainly sexual assault. Still I'm not convinced, as Moore denied it was rape only after controversy and backlash to the story.
Robin and Batgirl aren't related and they have dated when he became Nightwing so I don't see how that's inappropriate or how it would result in inbred children since THEY ADE NOT RELATED IN ANYWAY WHAT SO EVER!!!
I haven't found any of these guys that aren't totally SJWs but they never mentioned deadpool getting pegged in the movie, apparently only bad things happen in real life. But notice these guys don't say anything about all the PC changes that have been made. New Spiderman was a cultural cluster fuck!
Just for accuracies sake joker did not rape Barbra in the Killing Joke. The author Alan Moore has said he did not and it never said the did in the book or following books. Important detail they should not have assumed on. The animated movie implied differently but that because Brian azzarelo wrote (the adaptation) it and he writes most his villains that way... but even with that the producer bruce tim said no to it. So either way no rape in the Killing Joke. It's still plenty messed up without it really. But it rather plot driven
@@Slenderslayer351 I think its plausible because he did have the naked pictures of her after he shot her to show Gordon, so he had to have taken her clothing off, right? Again, never per say said that in comics or even movie that he molested or raped her, but still.
Alan Moore stated years later that he regreted crippling Batgirl. He said he called one of the editors at DC to ask his permission to do that, and to his shock, the editor immediately replied "Sure, Cripple the bitch". Moore said that he was surprised at how much hostility there was towards Batgirl from the male staff at DC....
He doesn't smoke meth he is forcibly injected against his will by bad guys... Once. I thought the backup personality thing was cool. And he doesn't "smoke weed every day" sheesh
This is beyond stupid. When it comes to fiction writing "inappropriate" is not a thing. You can't limit creative freedom. I tend to enjoy disturbing fictional scenarios that delve into madness or is a metaphor to a point. And to say "Batman is a kid's character", think you don't realize that at the time most of these comics were written, was when a majority of kids did not buy comics. After comics started putting in more mature topics, like tackling drug problems, they successfully got rid of the Comic Book Code Authority and they could not sell comics in regular stores anymore. Comics were sold in dark, out of the way, small stores and brought in more adult readers.
milster You really think that the author of A Death In the Family was thinking about the kids. “Oh boy! Oh boy! The kids will love seeing Robin get brutally murdered which they all voted for.” I don’t think it was kids that voted for that.
WhatCulture is an idiot for saying that the killing joke is "too inappropriate". I think it was good at showing that despite all the bad things a person can do, we don't have to become them. After all, Joker always wanted batman to kill him to prove him right and he wanted to push Batman and Gordon further than ever to try and break their morals and principles to prove that any good and/or ordinary person can become just like him.
More like you are the definition of the kind of comic fan that can't stand anyone criticising the blessed pages of nonsense stories about massively silly characters.
Some of the criticisms in the video actually are valid. TKJ stuff makes no sense though; Barbara is not raped in the comic. Where does he get this from? The nude photos? That's a bit of a stretch. And the developmentally challenged stuff is a bit odd since The Joker has often been written as that crazed carny with his collection of misfits. Even in The Dark Knight he's got obviously mentally ill folks working for him (fellow who shoots at the mayor, guy who puts the phone in his gut). This is not anything new to the character.
Shawnee Anderson Exactly! It also annoys me how so many people say ' well now that's too far-' when Joker does something as awful as paralyzing Barbara. No, it's not too far, when it comes down to it, the Joker is evil and you can't predict what he's going to do
About the death of Jason Todd, even Frank Miller said "To me the whole killing of Robin thing was probably the ugliest thing I've seen in comics, and the most cynical", and this is the guy who wrote "The Goddamn Batman"
For a channel that claims to be put together by a bunch of comic book lovers, you sure do put out a lot of videos that point and cringe at comic history.
Darin Wagner they have a film channel too that makes fun of movies a lot too not every comic storyline is good and not every film is good it's fine to make fun of them sometimes.
They gotta have some fresh material to dig into a list. With all the other comic book related pages, maybe there's some behind the scenes deals on who tells what... (shrug)
Ya. Back then it wasn't at all. But then they changed it to more mature. Like the joker for example. Back then he was just a quirky funny diabolical prankster. Now they have him as a psychopathic serial killing madman on hurting the innocent. Lol
Jason Todd wasn't universally despised. The vote by fans to spare him or kill him off was pretty close, but in the end those for killing off Robin won out.
aspiknf It really doesn't matter what you think considering all that matters is that the author confirmed what people misinterpreted as rape. And if you know any fucking thing about The Joker you know that sexuality assault isn't on his resume. People should have the ability to write whatever the fuck they want. It's called creative freedom.
The part about wetting himself is very inaccurate. Aside from "The Widening Gyre" not being canon *ever*, Batman specifically states that he wasn't simply afraid during the scene. It was about the pyrotechnics he used - he did it for the first time in his life, used too much explosives, and was shaken by the explosion he didn't quite control. Other than that, yeah, that comic was *weird*. Still, too bad it was dropped after the "ka-klak, slit" scene.
Inappropriate and appropriate are subjective terms. They mean nothing unless they are being spoken from a certain point of view. The point of the question was to ask why judging culture as "inappropriate" can exist. Nothing happens in the past or future. Everything happens in the present.
Nothing wrong with the Killing Joke it hits kinda home in what Batman was supposed to be a dark and gritty story with horrible people and also she wasn't raped. The Joker came in and shot her in the spine then took the pictures. Same with A Death In The Family it did a great job portraying that Batman lives in a fucked up world. Would be nice if you actually took your time to either read the stories or read up on them at least.
That All Star Batman by Frank Miller was the first comic that I picked up when I got into them in the mid-2000's. I became a Marvel fanboy up until I became financially unstable in 2013.
That whole Batman getting high thing is absolutely ridiculous since Bruce never takes any substances because he always believes he needs his senses at their peak and would never dull them.
I grew up reading DC and Marvel. Since subscribing to WhatCulture Comics, I've never given to much thought until now just what kind of Whack Jobs the characters of these two universes were, not to mention the story writers. As I follow you, I oft times, like this one, say about the creators and writers. "What the crap were you thinking?" Keep up the good work WCC.
"Grew up reading DC and Marvel" Yet you don't seem to notice more than half of the points he brought up in this video are lies that he claimed he got 'from the comics'. He called Batgirl Robin's surrogate sister despite the fact that her father is still very much alive and has in no way abandoned her, he said the Joker raped her in The Killing Joke and while I would definitely call undressing an unwilling and paralyzed woman sexual assault it is NOT rape, and finally he straight up said it was implied at some point that Batman smokes weed every day.. where and when did that happen can you tell me without coming back to this video? Doubtful. This channel is just sprouting bullshit for the sake of popularity but sure haha tell them to keep up the 'good' work.
What could possibly be wrong with a story about a mentaly handicaped man in armor brutally assaulting people he deems unworthy with weapons and gadgets bieng sold to kids
I'm surprised you didn't mention Death of the Family. That story and its tie ins was super dark, definitely darker than Death in the Family. Everything from Dick having to fight his Joker gas infected ex-girlfriend, to Damian being buried in dead and maggot infested birds, to the Joker making everyone believe he cut their faces off and force everyone to eat their own face. Some dark stuff, man.
For people who claim that they like stories that feel real, you sure can't handle any dose of reality in your comics. A mass murderer blackmailing a gay cop? Do you really feel the second half of that sentence is the worst part about him? The joker being a rapist at some point? Once again, he is a chaotic mass murderer, why would he draw the line there? If you watched a single season of Forensic Files, you would know how often rape and murder takes place so claiming that someone with hundreds of murderers under crosses the line at being a rapist shows your incredibly twisted perception.
@@ironkiss_3397 I get that. I'm a Batman fan and I love disturbing stuff. I was just saying that not all things have to be disturbing to entertain people.
And yet, no matter how many people are about to die we know the Joker will never be killed. Off to Arkham so you can escape and do some more murdering at a later date. Genius.
5:18 How is Batman a character for children? Sure he has action figures and lego sets but ALIEN and Predator have toys and action figures and I doubt those movies are for kids. Have you seen The Dark Knight? Or I don’t know, THE KILLING JOKE?
What do you expect from Batman? The Batusi? The comics were not meant for children. And Robin having a boner? Why are you shaming him for a body function every teenager has?
It was not even "shown" just implied and yes going to toilet has been part of all kind of stories if it fit in the story. Why? To make characters more human.
Ohh so now girls have d*cks? I mean, some hermaphrodites have them but really? That's kinda sexist y'know? I may not be trans or anything, but I am a proud supporter of the female community.
I get the argument for Barbara in the killing joke. The events feel like fuel for another character's arc when it should have been Barbara to get that focus. There should have been plots to how this affected her, how her actions affected others and questioning herself as a hero. Events like rape or sexual assault can be written in stories in the right way. Yeah, there are arcs in comics that probably showed how Barbara dealt with those events, but killing joke had poor execution on barbara's arc
The Killing Joke didn't actually have the joker rape barbara he had only stripped her down and taken pictures of her writhing in pain to imply rape when he hadn't actually done anything after shootign her to drive the commissioner insane with anger
Don't worry Ben is just like other people who assume a woman in comics whose just been paralysed *has to be* sexually violated as well. Barbra had enough humiliation.
Ok, I thought so. I don't know why so many people say he raped her. I own the comic and I never read it as such. I thought the pictures were just used to further torture Commissioner Gordon.
DC Comics has what I call "Superfriends Syndrome" - the compulsive feeling that they need to overcompensate for the cheesier elements of their history, usually by making overly violent and sometimes inappropriate stories.
Auston TGB ya who would have thought that the joker a maniac with no regard for anyone's life would assault someone. Shocking what's next here will fill a room with laughing gas and have everyone laugh themselves to death.
I was just saying which one I thought was worse, as in... if I was doing this list I wouldn't have put it 2nd it would've been first. For me personally
Auston TGB I would put the laughing gas above both that's a scary way to die painful vs being shot and having the wound fucked not pleasant scar you for live but at least your still alive
Not to mention that batman got there before The Joker in the animated movie for the killing joke ...messed up stuff and you thought robin was dodgy lol
