@@absolutecarnage777 that is not pedophilia. will never understand how so many people can be so ignorant as to think pedophilia is related to rape, hebephilia and ephebophilia. pathetic.
In cinders case, her thought process isn’t all too far off from realistic. In sexual assault trauma cases, in extremes, the victim either avoids anything sexual altogether, or can’t get enough of the act itself. It makes even more sense when you think of the death, she’s killing them with the very thing they use as a weapon. It’s kind of like.. forcing a cocaine dealer to snort 6 lines of it until he has a heart attack. Only in this case, “Cinder” has a trauma aspect and reason to do it. Doesn’t mean it’s right though, obviously
I saw it kind of like "reverse psychology". If you keep saying "don't do it" to a person who's so out of it, their first instinct will actually be "do it" just to contradict what you're saying, so instead just let THEM make the choice. The silence and their hesitation may slowly get them to realize that this is NOT what they really want to do. One HELLUVA risky gamble, though! I'm surprised to see Superman going for that.
It's not so much the concept as it is the execution esp. when Superman prattles on about how life is neither fair nor unfair. Also contrast that with the similar scene from All-Star Superman, like What Culture mentioned, where Superman stops a jumper by telling her she is indeed loved and valued instead of spouting inane bullshit.
the most important part is he stayed there with her for hours and waited for her to decide. and heat visioned the search light. both stories are examples of Clark's empathy and respect for people. did Morrison do it better? Yeah, less wishy-washy.
Arisia was "13" by the reckoning of time on her own planet, and still an adolescent among her people, but further retcons stated that years on her planet and in the lifetimes of her people were the equivalent of more than a dozen Earth / human years -- in other words, she was actually "old enough" to be Hal's great-great-(and a few more "greats")-grandmother! Thought that mitigating bit of info should be thrown in. However: That isn't how the Hal-Arisia relationship was originally written, and the "fix" that I described above doesn't make it any less creepy.
Also the key sentence there is "adolescent among her people". It doesn't matter if your planet's Year is 15 Earth years if you are still counted as a child on said planet.
No. No. Screw your inclusion of number 2 in this list. It is one of the most heartwarming comics I've ever read and you've presented it with no context. The jumper TELLS Superman that she doesn't want him to take her down off the building, because its her right to do what she wants. Supes thinks about it for a beat panel, then agrees. She doesn't jump and instead sits and cries, telling Supes all the things that have happened to get her where she is. Supes, somewhat clumsily, says that he's sorry but sometimes life sucks. The jumper, almost amused at how badly he handled the conversation, becomes emotionally tired and sits down, asking for time. He does everything in his power to make her comfortable, including zapping the spotlights that were giving her a headache and waiting literal hours of doing nothing, allowing her time to think and calm down. After several hours, the jumper says she doesn't know what to do. Supes offers this advice: one of his closest friends just killed themselves because they were chronically ill, in pain and never thought they'd have a good day left for the rest of their lives. He didn't condone them checking out, as he says, but he understood it. If the jumper feels the same, then he won't stop her because he understands how she's feeling, but if she wants down safely then he'll carry her down. She chooses to take his hand and let herself be carried down. As someone who suffers depression and finds myself repeatedly in a spot where everything in my life seems like an obstacle I'm unable to come close to beating, I've felt like that before too and I think about what Supes said a lot. There's almost always another happy day in the future, and I've got to hang on for that. Anyone who wants to can read the full thing here: imgur.com/gallery/Ijdxh .
A year late but I'm glad someone mentioned this. It's one of my favourite Superman stories, its very emotional and shows Superman is if nothing else, a man of his word. But also shows him in a light we dont often see. Helping people with words instead of super powers.
Jules . . . you're acting like Lori Lemaris was created for that Superman: Year One storyline. That character goes WAY back, first appearing in 1959 was _always_ a mermaid, and was always Superman's college-period girlfriend.
@Aaron B imagine still trying to speak against one of the best things that happened to mankind. No wonder less progressive places like Texas have higher mortality rates and high teen pregnancy rates
@Aaron B new mexico has the second highest teen pregnancy rate in the US, Texas is the fourth. Look at that. Dont ask for stats when you know you are the ones that cherry pick and manipulate information for a agenda
Actually, Wonder Woman was kept as the JSA's secretary because her original creator (William Moulton Marston) didn't want to give her to other writers, and wanted her focused on her solo adventures.
It actually is mentioned in the original article this video is based on: whatculture.com/comics/10-most-inappropriate-dc-comics-storylines-ever?page=7 But whatever the reasoning behind the scenes, in my opinion it's still wildly out of character for Wonder Woman!
@@jimmykavanagh1927 _NOT_ out of character for the Wonder Woman of the period. Wonder Woman was not designed as a Women's Lib character; she was designed as the embodiment of the ideal that a woman would only find personal fulfillment when she admitted to herself that, however professionally driven she was, deep inside, what she wanted _personally_ was to be tied up and spanked by a man (or otherwise dominated by a man, but the tying up thing explains why women were tied up and spanked in almost every issue of Wonder Woman).
Further, it was desperation to avoid having a sausage party that brought her in at all. The JSA was originally organized around characters who didn't carry their own titles. Batman and Superman had their own eponymous series almost from the start, in addition to starring in Detective and action respectively. Wonder Woman didn't yet have a series under her name until after JSA had started, so the rationale for most of the characters applied to her too. Technically, the original Red Tornado was also in the JSA and another woman but you wouldn't know if you weren't paying attention.
In my headcanon, she entered the JSA as the secretary Diana Prince to secretly spy them and know their dynamic as a hero group, and later revealing she was Wonder Woman all along and becoming a great asset to the team
I have so many questions about deathstroke giving that stroke to his sons fiance.....and why was the wedding going to continue after that in the first place? Edit: WTF batman, robin, and batwoman NTR storylines too?!?
Felt like a very Slade thing to do, whatever sort of love he has for his children...he’s not a good father. Priest’s run was the best Deathstroke since Johns’ Teen Titans run.
@@roguexgambit6544 The Priest Deathstroke? What kinda people you hang out with? Seen little but praise for his run. I get Deathstroke every time he gets a solo, and it’s the first time in more than a decade one held on in a long run, New 52 coming the closest at about 8 issues before the new team tanked it, so, 42 issues short.
@@RagnarokMic They're not exactly my friends. I never really knew who they were but they were really just random people who criticized my writing. It wasn't bad writing rather they disliked it and thought differently. They were like "don't base it off of Priest's work! He sucks! Everyone says it's bad." And I was like "I like the art, not as much the storyline in a certain area but I still think it's at least worth putting something in of its existence into Deathstroke's timeline. Or at least somewhat worth mentioning. I mean isn't it just one of the universes?" I'm basically saying it's just another side story on Slade. It doesn't have to be something everyone agrees with. Btw the girl just continued talking shit about it so I just waved her off
Englehart is responsible for #1 as well as the Hal / Arisia thing. About Hal and Arisia -- and also Deathstroke and Terra -- there is a tic you'll see with aging hippies, where they don't have the same sensitivity to age disparities that we do today. The Sexual Revolution was 100% correct in centering consent as the defining premise behind allowable relationships, but there were a few consent issues that they didn't quite work out. Age disparities are one; power dynamics that aren't strictly coercive are another. Anyway, the Hal / Arisia thing screams of, "... if we age her, that should eliminate the objections, right?" No, no it doesn't, you creepy hippie! And quit asking if my daughter is 18.
@Conrad Kujur I should mention that Geoff Johns retconned it that a year on Arisia's world is much longer than on earth, so even when she met Hal, she was significantly older. So that makes ARISIA the creep. I don't know how things are on Arisia's world, but here on earth we've worked out the formula "half your age plus seven".
this is tricky subject since we're adding a human standard to an alien so since it's fiction I give it a pass if the story is good. IRL tho you get the rope.
here's the thing, tho... they KNEW it was creepy which is why they went through so many backflips to explain it away. it's true about creepy old comic writers living out their sex fantasies through their comics.
@@vincentsartain3061 Steve Englehart also created Mantis back in the day (her character was a Vietnamese “bar girl” {Marvel Universe’s entry’s words} ) there was absolutely no way Disney was going to go with that origin for her.
#6: I read that whole train wreck and Deathstroke sleeping with his son's fiancé is not even the worst. During this arc, Joseph/Jericho is so terrified of coming out to his father that he... possessed and killed his secret boyfriend. Yup, I know that the Titans for Hired doesn't have a black or white moral compass, but that's crossing the line.
I will raise you The Slade Wilson/Terra Markov relationship from Teen Titans in the early 80’s. That “dog would definitely not hunt” in this day and age (It was inappropriate back then, and Marv Wolfman took a lot of heat)
The "Clark Kent falls in love with a mermaid" storyline isn't really Miller's invention, though.... the Superman/Lori Lemaris romance was a classic storyline from 1959.
The saddest part is "most" people got got molested at a young ages may used sex as a way to cope with their trauma as a way to show that they are loved or actual dominant one, So it not very far off for cinder to use it on her execution.
I’m a little upset that the killing of Aquaman’s baby was not on here. I feel like people just forget that a baby was killed with no remorse. Just because it’s an Aquaman story line.
Honestly, I love that scene. Superman tells her straight on that the second she's ready to accept help, he is more than willing to stand by and talk to her. And he floats there for LITERAL HOURS to be the shoulder she needs to lean on the second that she's ready. You can't make someone respond before they're ready. You just can't. And Clark showed his patience. And the second something showed up that was bothering her? "Can you tell them to turn off that light?" The next panel is literally just him nonchalantly blasting the wire with heat vision to shut it down himself. It's great lmao
Super late but to also explain Cinders case as a SA victim, from another victims perspective: Hypersexuality and using sex appeal to get your way is an EXTREMELY common reaction or trauma response that victims get, myself included on the topic of hypersexuality (idc about sharing this cuz i do public speaking a lot). In Cinders case, being a meta human can help her get rid of sex offenders, who she sees her uncle in other sex offenders because they have that sick trait in common. Calling it a "cheap gimmick" is- distasteful in my opinion. Molestation can mess a person up, which is why she kills them with what she knows. When you're a victim of SA at any age, it changes your perspective on what punishments they should get. Of course DC comics is completely fictional, but any kind of pedophile or sexual predator deserves a horrendous fate.
Sounds like a lot of copium to me, no real life SA victim who has trauma from their experience is going to go out and use sex to their advantage. That's literally redundant and retarded. And honestly if that's the case, they deserve whatever trauma they're dealing with.
For example, I'm assuming ur a dude. So if you were touched by your uncle, boo hoo a lot of people were. But if you think that's an excuse to go around touching kids, ur a fuckin idiot and the reason society is the way it is. You don't do that bc ur traumatized, that's a choice. People have choices after shit happens to then, if you choose to engage in the exact circumstances your so called trauma is responsible for, you're not a victim. You are just stupid.
@@SamaelDaking I'm a trans man. I NEVER FUCKING SAID IT WAS A GODDAMN EXCUSE TO TOUCH OTHER CHILDREN. And people DONT have choices. I'm a criminal psych major. It is a KNOWN FACT that sometimes when someone is abused in a certain way then they have chances of doing it themselves. What I'M talking about if you used your BRAIN is that a lot of us victims have a bad habit of oversexualizing ourselves and having a higher sex drive. You seriously need to do your research before talking shit. I would quite literally tear a pedophile limb from limb if I had the legal choice to.
@@SamaelDaking Of course I don't expect an internet stranger to believe anything I say but unless you're a victim yourself you're not allowed to say anything about this. You don't have the right. For me it was my uncle, church leaders, and an ex girlfriend that sexually assaulted me multiple times.
Not sure you understand much about trauma but some people that have had certain traumatic events actually seek out to recreate the traumatization, usually subconsciously.
Before watching this video: I know this more cartoon/ movie but if Batman booking up with batgirl isn’t on here this list isn’t complete. That storyline should of never happened. Everybody who really likes Batman mythos knows Robin/ nightwing and batgirl are like Batman’s unofficial kids and everybody usually accepts nightwing and batgirl dated. There’s no excuse for that storyline
@@KEVMAN7987 The fact that the only guy who really wants it to be a thing...is Bruce Timm...the most important figure in creating Batman TAS and the whole DCAU is what conflicts it even further. Like, WHY tho Bruce?
Just because Batgirl has dated Nightwing before doesn't mean she is his property 4ever... In some other stories NW gets to be with Starfire or him and BG break up and never talk again. I like the idea of having a BAT romance. If Bruce Timm has always shipped them, then why in the blue didn't he at least put a little bit of effort into creating a good love story between them. Sadly no writer nowadays wants to experiment with both of them together because they are afraid of what might happen if they mess the story. I've as many as there are Fanfiction stories and they better get some ideas from there. If written properly this duo could be the sweetest and best pairing Batman has ever had.
I really got to wonder who sits down and think that the fandom would want to see this level of inappropriate sickness. All it really does is destroy the character and make me like them less.
Yeah, never liked when writers pulled this into story lines unnecessarily. It really does just ruin characters. It's not like these sorts of things should never be put into comics, but they must be handled with extreme care and cautiousness. Deathstroke is a good example of this. I know that he's not a good person by any means, but turning him into a pedo and a sexual freak just ruins his image and doesn't suit him, in my opinion (btw, I'm very surprised that him and Terra weren't mentioned in the video). Deathstroke and Terra stuff was done well in Teen Titans The Judas Contract animated movie. There, while it may seem like that something is happening between them at first, it gets pretty obvious later that Deathstroke only uses and, infact, takes advantage of the girl's feelings and "crush" on him, without actually engaging in any form of relationship with her. While it's still screwed up, it's the very right amount of screwed up. It's in character for Deathstroke to do something like this in order to achieve his goals, and doesn't turn him into a creep without reason.
I actually really have a strange yet uncomfortable feeling that the Legion of superheroes was sorta a racist storyline, particularly the story about Tyroc. Thanks for making this video.
And what about the time in the 90s or 80s when superboy dated two grown women, one was a News reporter from Hawaii and the other was a villain name knockout !!?
“This comic is racist” *proceeds to draw the marginalized group the comic is being racist towards with ridiculous outfits* “Ha take that racist editors 😤”
That's one aspect I always hated from Bruce Timm and company verse. Bruce Wayne is too old for Barbara Gordon. I hated that it was canon to New Batman Adventures and Return of the Joker.
I hate this. It damages the character of Batgirl. What kind of person decides to bang their boss/mentor simply because her boyfriend left town for a while?
@@KEVMAN7987 some human beings do that. Honestly I like that storyline, it humanized the characters more, they are not perfect , they made mistakes, if your characters is always a paragon of justice without flaws then we will be returning ton the dark ages of the Silver Age where every character saved the day and nobody died.
Number 9. Superman not specifically telling her 'Don't Jump' is actually a suggested method when talking to someone who is suicidal. Under no circumstances should you give instructions to someone who is on the brink of ending their life. Instead, be calm. Talk to them like they're actually a person and slowly bring them around in a relaxed and caring manner. People reach that state because they think the world and their life is awful. Having orders given to them constantly may well be a major factor in that, so giving them the order 'Don't Jump' may actually be all it takes to drive them to it. Instead introduce yourself, lead a conversation off somewhere else entirely. Let them know there are people who care, regardless of if they know them or are a stranger. Try to find common ground, like a TV show or something and use that to inspire some happiness in them. Superman watching over her quietly, making sure she knew that someone cared and would stay with her, without trying to make decisions for her or give her commands was what convinced that girl to step back from the ledge and choose life. That same approach has worked in real life countless times. If you're going to comment on something as serious as suicide, regardless of if it's in a RU-vid video about comics, please take the time to do the slightest bit of research about the subject.
@@TimTE01 So if you're not going to elaborate, why comment in the first place? I'm sharing advice often given by mental health services to raise awareness of how to deal with someone on the brink of commiting suicide and your input is to just say 'No and I'm not telling you why'. Get a life.
Yeah, I personally thought it was a pretty cool arc for her. Using the fact her trauma has desensitized her to get revenger on the sort of people who made her like that. I feel like the video saying 'Why does she need to have sex with them' is a huge misunderstanding because she's taking everything away from them when they thought they were actually getting what they wanted. To paraphrase Talia Al Ghul in the Dark Knight Rises, 'It's the slow knife... that cuts the deepest'.
In can imagine at the Hall of Justice the heroes swapping stories. And Green Lantern Hal Jordan just realized there is a line not to cross and now he spends his days along side Doom Patrol.
here's the thing about Slade Wilson, he's the Darth Vader of comics. every once and a while a villain comes along that is so badazz that they want to keep using them and make them into heroes (or anti-heroes) so they can let them win. that was Slade Wilson's problem. when this happens, they need to remind the viewer that this is still the BAD GUY. so they make him do terrible things to show their moral compass is messed up. LE characters or "honorable" villains often have this problem. so they have to do something heinous to reestablish their villain cred. Namor, Doom, Ra's Al Ghul, Vigilante, the list goes on.
I bet that spanking-robot issue of superman was written by the same guy who created wonder woman. the bit with Louis being tied up there, gives it away the most.
Nope. A good decade after he died. Nor was it Michael Fleisher, at least fifteen years too soon for him. Just part of the general superdickery of the Fifties.
Number 2 was a good story, and a good thing. He had to let her make that choice on her own, or she'd just do it anyway at home. He wasn't taking away her agency, he was just there to talk to her.
Now I haven't read the second one but it kinda beautiful I mean it's like I'm not going to stop you but I believe that your strong enough to make the right decision
For the green lantern writers. Having hal be a mentor to a young green lantern is fine. Hal dating an alien babe is fine. But they should be two seperate characters.
People are weird. if anyone ever needed some level of proof, then these "stories" should help any none-believer agree. what did the writers/artists smoke when making this.
@Game guy So what about any of these examples presented in the video is meant adults? and not just random juvenile fan-ideas presented through bad writing or very bad products of it's time.
Don't go feeling too superior. Child marriage is still legal in almost every state in the US. Almost all of which are young girls given to adult men. All that is required is parental approval.
@@michaeldougherty6036 to add to the humor, in a country where the concept is widely considered taboo most children think they're old enough to make such heavy decisions already.
Theres a byline in there though. It has to be between someone 3 -5 years proximity of their age. So its illegal for anyone over 17 to be with a 13 year old in Japan.
I don't understand why "superman year one" gets so much hate. It took some getting used to, I admit. But I did find issue number two interesting and refreshing.
#2 I’d say Superman was more/less saying i’ll respect your decision even against his own morals if life is really that bad for her. *She made the choice on her own by facing the reality of death itself & rejecting that reality, showcases that her life still has meaning.* As Viktor Frankl would put it.. “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves. Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way. For the meaning of life differs from man to man, from day to day and from hour to hour. What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general but rather the specific meaning of a person's life at a given moment. Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather he must recognize that it is he who is asked. Each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life; to life he can only respond by being responsible.” -Viktor Frankl It might be out of Character for Superman to let someone willingly die & he has the ability to save them, i’m not all that familiar with the lore myself but my opinion still stands. Blaze my comment section as i know some of you will.
@@Jethammer117 the idea that Superman has sex with other women before Lois Lane is a blasphemy for some Fans. They even object to the idea that he also banged Lana.
