I don’t think the Mallard is overrated, because it gives you more cards, which is exactly what you want from the wetland. The fact that you get to see only 1 card instead of 2 is a big difference, but even if the 1 is not good it is not really a problem. Cards can be turned into food or can be tucked. Ofcourse it is not a bird that you are going to play in the late game, but in early game i would probably choose Mallard over Sandpiper/Snipe, because giving cards to your opponent can be extremely risky. A card type that i think is overrated is Chickadee/Nuthatch. This is because gaining points from caches in the early game is not that usefull. These cards don’t give extra food nor eggs (= usefull resources) but instead just give some extra points. This is not what you need in the early game because it doesn’t give you any tempo. They don’t really make your forest more efficient, they just make it feel as if taking food is not a wasted action (but in reality 1 extra point in the early game is not that impactfull). Because of the low points, it wouldn’t really play these birds in late game either. If you compare this with the Mallard who does actually gives you a usefull early game resource, i think the Mallard deserves his spot in Tier A more than the Chickadee/Nuthatch type.

Mallard is definitely still a tier A! In my experience, the one point per activation from chickadee and nuthatch can quickly add up and swing the game, especially if you have multiple of them in the forest.

Good commentary. I appreciate the hot takes willing to buck the "cult status" around some of these cards. I especially agree that Brant, Kingbird, and Mallard are overrated. Brant can have a huge impact as a player's first play from their opening hand based on what's in the starting tray, but after that, it struggles to shine. It doesn't help that its general qualities are lackluster. Once EE drops, it gains the utility of being an amazing play off the Yellowhammer archetype at the end of the round as a way to scoop up a great card that no one had a chance to get. I've debated De Visme in the past on Kingbird (I think it was him). He seems to see a lot more value in this card than I do. I agree with Flan's take here. I've debated Mallard lovers on reddit. They did manage convince me to move it up on my tier list. I had it in "underplayed" because I just don't use it that often. I agree with Tuck & Cache's take on this.

I think everyone’s list is gonna be different based on individual experiences and play styles.

My humble opinion is that in a wetlang tucking engine the Brant is a very good card. 3 free cards to tuck and cycle are huge. It can be useful as well if the 3 face up cards (or at least 2 of them) are good ones and you either want them for yourself or you don't want you opponents to get them or both.

In specific situation where there are two good birds in tray, yes, brant is quite good.

Hermit Thrush: Good when you are leaning on ravens for food in the grasslands. Otherwise, agreed. Oriole: Agreed. 2 Egg birds: I disagree. In the early game, if you get them down early you can use their bonus to take fewer early grassland actions and give yourself more eggs. This lets you build up more birds. Later game when you're taking lots of strong grasslands actions to max out your egg count, this will help you max out more. I will go for them provided I have at least 4 egg slots of the matching nest type on a different bird. Quail: Agreed. If it laid 2 eggs, it would be in the same league as a wood duck. Baird's Sparrow: I still play these birds only because the seed + worm food cost are the two most common food types. King Rail: Agreed. If you have an over productive egg engine and need the space, sure, but those bonus cards can whiff sometimes and give you 0 points. Kingbird: Disagree: You can stall waiting for that worm too, laying 2 eggs and setting up the wetlands. If the other players go out of their way to stall playing their own forest birds, they can often hurt their tempo. In the late game, the EE has some fantastic late game food dumps that can turn all those free worms into points. At worst, it is 1 food warm body that helps you get to that all important 2 food action in the forest. Brant: Agreed. It needs to be a 1 food cost Sandhill Crane: If you have a strong forest that is equipped to give you lots of seeds specifically, OR your opponents have played a bird that "gives all player 1 food" these 1 food for 2 tucked card birds become good. However, the EE have more flexible food sinks though I know you aren't factoring that into this list. Mallard: Agreed. It is strictly worse than any of the wetlands draw 2, discard 1 because you get to look at more cards, even if you ultimately only get 1 extra card at the end.

the only play the hermit thrush when i have the winemaker/fruit eating bonus card or when i need the star nest for another mission. 7 feather points are good but i hardly ever benefit from its ability

Yea, for quite a few games I felt pretty good picking the hermit thrush as a starter but quickly regretted it.

Hey, don't bash the Sandhill Crane! I get that Canda Goose is generally better, but with something like the Spotted Towhee and a full grassland you get more points. If you try to get rid of all of your eggs (except what is needed to at least get 2nd place in Round 3 EoR) a full grassland with Canada Goose and Towhee as your bookends can get you an insane number of points as you are just laying eggs and using the Towhee to feed the Goose. Any extra food you then use to convert to eggs. At least it isn't like the Double Crested Comarant which I have seen some people try to play only to find it is impossible to work with.

I will bite the bullet and disagree with you on the kingbird. Between the 3 "do [this] when a player plays a bird in [habitat]" birds (belted kingfisher, horned lark, eastern kingbird), the kingbird is the only one that goes in all three habitats, and its power is the most flexible. I agree that it's not as strong in a 1v1 game, but an early kingbird in a 3-5 player game can be a game-changer. Most of the time you can't afford to skip the forest, so you can expect to at least break even with the food cost.

Ngl, I get annoyed when my opponent plays kingbird before I have any forest bird down.

Play those king bird powers move one and you’ll receive 5 plus foods from nothing but others playing. Sandhill crane with a Catbird and a bird that creates Grain is UNSTOPPABLE. Also play brand turn one is amazing! Your guys have probs never scored above 115

Love this content. Brant is very overrated and very rarely good, taking from the tray is bad unless the bird is very good. Sandhill crane is a combo piece, it isn't rated highly so it isn't really overrated but it wins games if you have a wheat generating bird to the right of it.

Some people love the brant, which I do not understand.
@mtk52983

@@tuckNcache I understand it, but I also usually use only when there are 2 cards I either want to play or deny to my opponent. It works a lot better in 2 player games. I find it less appealing with more because everyone could be playing differently. If I have a strong grassland but need cards for tucking it might get me more points to play the Brant than drawing cards if my wetland isn’t independently producing points because I loaded it with white/pink power birds. Not to mention opening egg spots might sometimes be necessary. At that point in the game the chances of making a sudden reveal for my opponent is less likely if I am just doing it for added cards.

It is very handy when you are running a grassland tucking engine.
