I owned a SPAS 12 for over twenty years and just sold it recently. I never found it to be unreliable, but it is extremely hard to reload quickly and is very heavy.
@@ProtossExecutor100The Benelli M4 Super 90 can do everything the Franchi SPAS-12 better, at a fraction of the expense and weight. Replacement parts are easily obtainable and there’s robust aftermarket support. By every metric, the Benelli is a far better choice.
I was a range officer at a TN TWRA range. Watched a single mom and her 2 sons bring in a new 500 S&W purchased for home defense. They opened up the box and just stared at it. They asked me to shoot it while they watched. They ended up selling it without ever shooting it.
Glock is incredibly overrated. They haven’t done anything cool since they started, now the just make different sizes of the same gun. Yes I am possessed by hipster rage at Glock for being stupid
At 6:25 you mention the modern recreations being, "extremely unreliable". Agreed. I have owned two and they both functioned very poorly. Terrible guns.
The sear on mine stripped out on first disassembly and auto ordnance refused to honour their warranty. So I’ve been stuck with broken have crap heap for like 10 years now.
The P90 only makes sense in its original select fire short barrel configuration for use by non front line troops. It is lightweight, compact and holds lots of rounds.
The ergonomics on the P90 are some of the worst i've ever seen If not the worst. And the cartridge it fires is basically just a demasculated 7.62 tokarev. IMO the p90 deserves to higher on the list than it is.

@@gunengineering1338 The P90 was designed for a very specific use, giving rear-echelon troops a PDW with a bullet that could (not) penetrate the armor that NATO believed VDV troops used. I guess they never considered that if said rear-echelon troops engaged the VDV, that dinky little bullet would have been useless against the 6B5/6B3 vests, and they'd be engaging elite troops with real weapons.
I remember reading Mark Owen's book where he talked about the weapons he carried during his deployments and i remember him talking about the MP7 saying that it was great for compactness, but that it sucked for actually shooting people with.

@@coolsenjoyer yeah, it seems like that's always how it starts then you start seeing more M1 carbines (another weapon never designed to be an infantry weapon) show up in infantry units in WW2/Korea. Another example is the CAR-15/M4 carbine being designed for officers and support units then ending up being a standard shoulder arm.
Yeah, that's the general consensus I've seen from the SMUs. It's ideal for niches like VBSS or PSD work (though things like the LVAW have started encroaching on it). One guy said there was a noticeable lack of terminal performance with the 4.6 compared to rifle rounds, but the volume-of-fire you could manage given the MP7's low recoil and high capacity held compensate for this shortcoming to some degree.
Which manufacturer? I would have added any 1911 because of the complexity of the firearm. Tooless disassembly is the modern landscape. I have a double stack 45 and while I would never get rid of it, I cannot honestly recommend any 1911 45 for general every day carry.
@@davidmilisock5200 turn the bushing with my hand, remove the bushing with my hand, pull the slide back to the correct notch, remove the slide stop with my hand and pull the slide and barrel off the frame. The only tool required for field stripping is your hand.
Its really more about the cut of the tube and the finger. You only put what you need in the crack and apply light pressure with your finger tips. But yes the caulk gun is also pretty over rated.
I had a buddy who had an in with the local cops where I used to live, and we spent a LOT of time on the police pistol range, firing a wide range of light to heavy pistols. of all the pistols I tried, I found the most comfortable and accurate for me to be the old 38 special. Surprised me, given the short barrel, but it is a very comfortable gun to use.
My wife loves her PS90. She is in her mid-70s and doesn’t have sufficient upper body strength anymore to comfortably shoulder/fire her AR. The featherweight PS90 with essentially no recoil and fifty round capacity, lets her load and shoulder on Sunday and then shoot all week. Having said that, we’d love to swap out the factory barrel for the short P90 barrel in order to improve it as a PDW.
There's a great RU-vid with Larry Vickers balling out of a simulated vehicle ambush and then laying down accurate suppressive return fire with a P90 - but that's Larry Vickers, and that guy is a phenomenal rifle and pistol shot. I once took an advanced pistol class from Larry. Extremely nice guy and an excellent instructor. He shot right along with the rest of us; he had target 12, while I had target 13; Larry was continually offering helpful, supportive comments as to how I could/should improve. He was shooting his brand new Alien semi-auto pistol that he had brought to the class for everyone in the class to try out. Mr. Vickers out-shot everyone in the class - LAPD SWAT Detail, LASD deputies, and a number of very capable civilian shooters. Anyway, my wife and I are both better off with well-aimed semi-automatic fire (although spraying 50 rounds of 5.7x28 would be a lot of fun!!! What we would like however, would be the 11.1" P90 barrel in lieu of the 16" PS90 barrel with the ridiculous 5+" long "muzzle brake" required by the State of Commiefornia in order to exceed 26" OAL. @@thatguy22441
Loved the Thompson when I was a kid. An uncle of mine survived the mess in Bastogne during ww2 and somehow managed to ship home a crate of booty before he went home. One item of which was a Thompson he inherited during the fight. Plus he also sent a bunch of german gear but he didn't respect any of it due his experiences. But he let the kids play with the guns and helmets, all except the sacred Thompson which kept him alive during that winter in Belgium. :)
Man my dad had a Thomson 45 when I was a kid to and I could handle it effortlessly at 7 years old. Never had it jam once and it put huge holes in cars , washers and dryers.
My oldest son was 10 or 11 the first time he shot my Mossberg 12g pistol grip. First shot knocked him back 2 steps he looked at me with the biggest smile I've ever seen on his face. So he leaned into it and dumped the tube as fast as he could. I was so proud of him!!!!!
My oldest son was the same way. His OMG gun as a child was the 357 Magnum. He is 49 now and STILL talks about the first time he shot it. He now has most of my guns, but not THAT one LOL, he'll have to wait a while yet.
I bought a broken mp7 many years ago and I got a really good deal on it obviously because it wasn't working but it ended up being a fairly simple fix that h&k was able to do after a lot of begging on my part. But now it's fully functional and dope to show off at the range lol
I agree with what you said on the pump shotgun. If you train with it and are not scared of it, it's an amazing weapon. Carried one every day for years. Had a hard time going to an AR until things changed out in the world. Saw several people shot with shotguns. Fight ended immediately.
Agreed. I have used pump shotguns since childhood. I'm 65 now. Used one for a long time in the Army. Still using pump gun and compete in trap and skeet. If you are not trained on one, there are other options. I keep a 590A1 by the bed for home defense. They are lethal.
Yes. Where a rifle round (especially fmj) will make a through-and-through wound, transferring only a fraction of it’s energy, a 12ga load of buckshot or a slug with it’s greater frontal area will create a larger wound cavity with the potential for greater damage. Chunks of stuff are often removed. Having said that, I’ll almost always choose a rifle.
Id say one of my favorite purchases on amazon this year has been 6 dummy shells for my shotgun. I don't live in a rural area and its tough to get out to the range (dont get me wrong, Ive been out with it - so im very aware of its recoil and how it handles ;) ), but just doing practices exercises of loading and cycling rounds through it safely in my basement is just so very satisfying.
I do the same and it IS very satisfying. It's also critical practice for a tube fed shotgun since they're pretty much always almost empty, but designed to be topped off on the fly. You're having fun and staying sharp for free. Doesn't get much better than that.
I can't believe shotgun was even on the list unless we're just smarter in the south😂 we can use the shotgun to do about damn near anything... you can't go wrong with a shotgun several great options for ammo.. easy to use even for a female ...they are very affordable and so is the ammo...
Interesting piece of history: The first mainstream smg was the German MP18, which was made right before the Thompson and influenced other designs such as the MP28 and MP38.
And they're supposed to be some of the finest shooting smg's ever built from what I hear. Heavy, but not as heavy as the thompson, but exceptionally stable and pleasent to shoot.
I carried a Thompson (first tour the M1A1, second tour an M1) in Vietnam; they never jammed or had any kind of malfunctions.Biggest problem for me was getting enough magazines; had to carry a few paper boxes of ball ammo in reserve and they always fell apart after a while. I carry one on the cover of my book. My first XM16E1 was about a year or so old when I got it, rusty chamber and all, in 1966. Didn't run well at all. After I went Recon I got a Thompson and never wanted anything else.Had a Swedish K in 9MM but too hard to get ammo so I swapped it off. So many folks who never seen the elephant criticize stuff that worked when the chips were down.

I heard that as well. They tried cannibalising old mags that weren't SCAR mags to save money, but it wasn't compatible and caused problems. I think the internals were addressed with later scars which made it better performing, but took so long to get out that scars were abandoned at that point. Still a cool gun imo. With that pricing though, definitely over rated.
The Scar 17 is not an overhyped gun. I have yet to find a full power DMR that weighs under 8 lbs, quick change Barrel, short stroke gas piston, folding stock, and sub MOA shooter that isn't a Scar 17.
@@JustSomeGuy69420 I love my SCAR and while I could have gotten something similar for half the price, I got what I wanted and it works well. Never had an issue with it and it's just a solid gun. It's never not done what I needed it to do so who cares what other guns do. Some people buy certain cars because its the best bang for your buck but not everyone wants to sit in a Corvette when they could be in a Ferrari. Also those guys who can't "shoot worth shit" are doing as you suggest sitting at the range practicing. More power to them.
You put both Glock 19 and Sig P320 on this list. That is the most honest list anyone could come up with. I don’t think there’s anything to add or subtract from this list.
USP made the list. I love my USP40 and I’m not surprised it made the list but you got to admit it is the OG. The fact that is still being compared to modern pistols is evidence of what a great pistol it is. Great list. I’d like to see more!
@Treblaine or the HK45, or really any H&K product made after the Mp5... they are all solutions in search of a problem. This entire list could be KAC and H&K products and it'd be 100% accurate.
I'm fully well aware that my favorite gun is overrated and useless for a lot of people, but that doesn't stop me from absolutely adoring the Kriss Vector. If you ever get the opportunity to shoot a full auto vector you'll understand why, it is a hell of a great experience!
@@blaiseeltine9516 I got mine from a listing on GunBroker which included three extended mags, two standard G20 mags, a decent but cheap optic, 200 rounds of 10 mm Auto, and a pretty all right case for $1,200 before fees and FFL. Even the nicer SBR enhanced models are only around $1,600 and you can get the pistol models for pretty cheap
Sure, it's well done, for the most part. But it's not $4000 well done. For well under half that you can get an AR-10 that's better in every way, except not being able to fold the stock.
My brother in law has one and it is cool for sure . But I literally bought a Sig Ar10 , 500rds of ammo, a full level 4 body armor setup , and a 3 day training course for less than his Scar.
@randylahey2242 just read up on some of that. FN (per customer) said things like "suppressed setting is not meant to be used" , etc. Very disappointed after reading more into this. I still believe the system is sound but I question FN QC & CS, which, considering that they make a good amount of our military small arms, should be much better than the experiences I've read about after reading your comment.
@sgthop I agree the price is above where I believe it should be but I'd hesitate to agree that an AR10 is "better in every way". A folding stock is a big plus when you're entering & exiting vehicles for example. Also, piston driven, lighter & pretty soft for a .308. Besides the price, magazine choice & FNs take on suppressors, etc as replied to in another comment - what are the SCAR shortcomings?I've shot many a SCAR 17 suppressed without issue- although I do find FNs responses disappointing about this issue, my clients & I have never experienced any issues.
The fact that the AR10 exists basically nulls the existence of a Scar at this point. AR platform that almost everyone is familiar with and is half the price? Or a super expensive rifle that shoots the same caliber?
I've owned half a dozen different p320 pistols in different calibers (2 in 45ACP and 4 in 9mm) and never had a single malfunction with any of them. Pre and post upgrade models. No issues with reliability at all. I no longer own any of them but that's for other reasons. YMMV obviously.
I am jealous! I have had ONE P320 and it has been sent back to SIG 3 times. 2 broken striker assist springs. It malfunctions and is the least accurate handgun I have ever owned. I guess I got a pure Lemon. I'm glad you didn't have any issues!
I've owned five P320s, all different models, put thousands of rounds through them and never had a single malfunction. I've had better luck with the P320 than I did with the Glocks I've owned. And yeah... the drop fire issue was acknowledged and fixed by Sig 6 years ago. Why the fuck are people still talking about it? Probably watching RU-vid videos from 2016 and not looking at the dates. LOL
Because it never should have been included lol. The logic of saying "well some modern guns are kinda better" doesn't make the USP overrated. It's literally one of the greatest handguns ever made.
USP is literally the most reliable and durable COMBAT pistol. It’s not made for AIWB, or for “features” etc, and they often come with 3 dot white sights or night sights. THO is a great Guntuber but he should know that an old gun like that wasn’t built to compete with guns made 30 years after it. It was built to be a combat tank for its era and it certainly exceeded all expectations.

I think its fair. USP's especially the DA/SA configuration can have terrible DA and just "ok" SA pulls. Beretta 92's factory triggers are easily better and some CZ's like the P-01 and 75"s are even better. Allll that being said they can be improved, all mine are now LEM and have the GG SRS kits in them. Of course the esperts and the elites have the better triggers and internals as well. Obviously if you shoot anything enough you can overcome even bad DA pull weight and make it work but its nice not to have to. LEM for life.
I have several 9mm semi-auto pistols and one is a USP-9 with night sites. I bought it because it’s 100% capable of handling all types of loads, it is large enough for my XXL size hands with a large trigger guard and it’s very simple to clear a jam. My favorite bit is that it is very easy to service and never runs hot and is consistent. Yes, I think they kick harder, and the ergonomics of the grip is too narrow. My favorites are still 1911 S&W because they are just superior in accuracy and recoil, but standard mags are 7 round capacity and that’s low for a 9mm full size. Hammerless is great, but I prefer the 1911 DA/SA with hammer. I know it and can repair it and find it to be more reliable. I live in CA, so I’d love to shoot a VP9 but can’t if I were to go hammerless. Not a fan of Sigs. Just can’t admire the chunkyness of the slide and garage-door springs on the 226.
As Canadian forced into being able to grab only one pistol before the freeze, very glad I chose a Cz-75 over p320 when those were the two options presented.
I do have a P320. I only got it because of a really good Black Friday sale. I had my doubts at first but I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would.
I have the M17 with the Wilson Combat configuration, love it from top to bottom. But I can understand a lot of people have preferences and you’re quite fortunate to have to ability to try so many different brands and calibers of guns. I am really inclined to buy a Canik just from watching your reviews and hope it’s all you make it out to be
What holds me back from Caniks are some recent issues with the microcompact. But more importantly, the middle east is likely to explode any day into a full out regional conflict. Turkey, although a nato member is becoming closer to possibly joining with other enemies of Israel in war. Will all that upheaval make getting parts for Canik products difficult to get ?
Even in semi, the PS90 with a short barrel is a phenomenal weapon for room clearing and capacity. Probably on of the best designs for inside the home. Anyway, The PS90 isn’t supposed to have a 16” barrel, but it’s inconvenient to Form 1 and expensive.
@@Rufus_McMillianMy P320 xcarry has been 100% reliable out of the box in over 2,000 rounds. But I only shoot factory ammo. Also the drop safe issue is over blown, because it is non existent in post upgrade modela. The majority of people shootings themselves with it broke multiple safety rules. The gun has no trigger safety blade, and a precocked striker, if you are negligent with it, the gun is less forgiving than say …a Glock.
Interesting point in 1943 General MacArthur wanted to replace the Thompson SMG with The Australian Owen SMG . The Owen was far and away the better and more reliable weapon . Now it's often called the best SMG of WW2 . It was almost unstoppable . The top mounted magazine meant the user could lay prone when firing . The top mag also meant that it was in line with the body so no risk of snagging on shrubs . US government blocked the use of Owen guns by the US Army due to political pressure from the Thompson manufacturers .US troops in the SW Pacific would do anything to get their hands on an Owen .
big bore revolvers. I've had two .454 Casull's - LOVED them both, but back then (15+ years ago) it was $2.75 per shot, so I eventually got rid of both. I got the first one because a guy sold it to a gun store while I was shopping there, he said it was his 'house gun,' and the guy behind the counter said 'what kind of houses were you hunting with it, ranches, split levels...'
One thing that is nice if you really want a big bore revolver is that you can sometimes get them cheap at a pawn shop BECAUSE People realize after firing them very few times, you can get one at the pawn shop, very little used and with most of a box of bullets
I find it interesting that the PDWs, that were designed to be used by soldiers in the rear of the front line that did not require a full size rifle or SMG but something better than a pistol, almost all ended up in the use of special forces instead of the original purpose. MP5K, FN P90, MP7... With some exceptions, for example: In the German Bundeswehr the MP7 replaced the MP2/MP2A1 (Uzi with wooden stock or folding stock in A1), so it is usually found on mechanics, tank crews and so on. The Uzi is top on my personal list of overrated. Nicknamed 32-round hand grenade in the German Bundeswehr. Especially the version with the fixed wooden buttstock. If you hit it hard enough on the buttstock, the bolt will travel back far enough due to inertia to pick up a cartridge from the magazine, chamber it and fire it...on the folding stock that is not a big issue, but with the fixed stock it is.
Very interesting about the Sig. I've put at least 1,000 rounds through my Sig P320 X-Carry Legion without any issues. However, it doesn't have the drop-in fire control unit. And I've never dropped loaded or unloaded, so I can't attest to the drop-fire. Great video.
I could imagine your grandfather was hyped to have it back then, its a fantastic sub-gun, but with modern alternatives, its inaccessibility and cost, the tommy just doesn't hold a candle to a LWCR or other modern 45 acps
On an unrelated note payday last week so I'm at my local proprietor of pew pews and this gentleman there had to be pushing 80 an old farmer in denim and an Army vet hat sitting there talking about cowboy action shoots until the guy brings up what he ordered and he opens the box from Smith Wesson and it's that folding PCC you did the 1000 round review and torture test on. So I said to him that's a cool gun I saw this channel on RU-vid review it called the Honest Outlaw and he responds with "yeah that guy beat the crap out of it it kept going". Just thought it was so cool this guy over twice my age was watching the same RU-vid channels as me. And the fact that your reviews and thoughts on these guns really do affect our decisions.
You talked up the 870 at first, I was wondering what you were going to say that's bad about it. But, I fully agree with the cons. However, in the right hands, the 870 is great. I love it.
Very interesting! The 1911 is a great gun as is the browning HP. I have also used the FN fal and have found it to be a very reliable gun. Its a bit heavy but that can be useful when you have to hit someone with it! That's about as modern as I get I'm afraid
Concerning the 12 gauge - I'm 6'2", 220lbs but 70 years old. I now use "lite" - reduced recoil slugs and 00 which DO REALLY Help Big Time! My oldman shoulder likes these rds. Try some - most mfrs make them.
Might also look into the Aguila mini shells, doubles your ammo capacity and is half the kick but half the range. Only need a little 15 buck adapter to feed them in most pumps.
Two things I've done with some of my pumps. One, shorten the stock, I use the Magpul SGA on 870's and 590's, or a youth stock. Then, put the stock into your peck, under your eye, and don't stand bladed to the target. Feels odd at first, but your shoulder won't feel any recoil. Second, use a limbsaver butt pad, or similar.
My father carried a Thompson in ww2 and when listening to the commentary it was pretty well everything my father said ,good in urban situations but too heavy

@@darbyheavey406technically it was replaced by the M2 smg but that was replaced by the M3 before any real production had a occurred. A lot of the problems with the Thompson have to do with it being a 1st gen sub machine gun. It was essentially a blowback .45 that was milled making it super heavy. Funny enough it was so expensive that its price was used as the tax for the NFA as it was seen as an ungodly high amount at the time.

With the mechanical-feeling action when firing and heavy, full-size 45, the USP has always felt like the modern, older brother of the 1911. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for them ever since seeing them in CounterStrike and Half-Life when I was a kid. On the plus size, you only ever need to fully disassemble it once, because you'll never get it back together after that. Gotta love German engineering!
After a video series on the disassembly, and doing several LEM conversion, I wouldn't say they are that hard to work on or take apart. They're engineering I still respect regardless. Carry my USP9c LEM as an EDC.
I remember watching the Stargate TV show, and thinking the P90 was super cool. Eventually, I got a chance to shoot a PS90. I didn't like the scrunched-up shooting stance, or stepping on spent shell casings. It still looks cool, though.

The Thompson hurts. I agree, but it's my favorite gun I own. When I first got mine, my daughter thought I was an idiot because I couldn't stop smiling for an hour after I shot it. Bucket list moment. Also, shooting the original is waaaaay different than the newer copies. Pricey to get one, but I have no regrets.
This is my first time watching one of your videos. I clicked on it expecting to disagree with most if not all of the guns on your lise. But having watched it, I am having a hard time finding fault in any of your choices. I have been around guns most of my life. With 23 years in the corps and a pretty extensive collection of my own. I have personally used most of the guns on your list and completely agree with the order of most of them. I'm fortunate to have come across this video. It was as informative as it was interesting. I'm always interested in getting the honest opinion of someone who has a greater amout of knowledge and experience than me. Clearly your experience level in this arena is far more extensive than my own. Your video was filmed and edited exceptionally well, and your commentary was precise and to the point. Ahhhhhhh. I love my P320 retrofitted with Wilson Combat goodies. Had it since they were released and believe it or not I've never had a single malfunction with either my handloads or commercial ammo in 3000+ rounds. As far as the drop safe or phantom firing issues, I don't remember ever seeing somebody being able to replicate the issues. As your list got shorter and shorter my pulse rate increased hoping that you had either changed your mind or more likely, that you forgot about it. Alas however, such was not the case. Oh well, in spite of our differences I still think you're the best gun reviewer and have the best channel out there.
No offense, but the Thompson should be higher up IMO. It’s an objectively terrible gun that people treat as a scared cow because of WW2 (a conflict where it was promptly replaced by the M3 Grease Gun).
You mentioned Glock’s having more issues over the past few years and I think that it’s not just Glock. I have not bought a Glock in that time frame, but I have bought S&W and Rugers and they had to go back for repairs. I think it’s a COVID thing because they might be working with skeleton crews or perhaps less qualified crews. Just a thought.
You're probably right, but even without the reliability thing Glocks are still over rated. I personally find glocks very reliable and also very over priced and low in standard features
I believe you, but that’s crazy to me that an m&p had issues. I own well over a dozen of their pistols and a couple of their ARs and I’ve never had an issue with one of them over 10s of thousands of rounds.
Maybe so, but Glock's main selling point these days is its reliability. Seems kinda dumb to not focus on keeping the one selling point that keeps them in the game.
Interesting take on the shotgun. I have a pump shotgun behind the bedroom door for home defense. I grew up with them and it's second nature for me, but not so much for my family. I'm going to rethink that strategy.

@@keithdaniels1994 I prefer the Benelli shotguns myself, as I own an M2 Tactical myself for home defense and absolutely love it!!!! I prefer semi-auto shotguns like the Benelli M2/M3/M4, is because if my home is broken into by multiple armed assailants, you'll definitely wanna sling lead right at them very quickly (especially if you have a 50-shot bandoleer with extra shells at your disposal)
With pumps if you use the Paul Harrell method of pumping off the recoil I think it’s just as effective as an auto but more reliable if you’re not a weakling

I am a little butthurt about the USP but I bought mine because I know it will go bang and land in the right place every time without fail. I like simple and reliable things in high stress situations.
@@f1rebreather123 The only thing that makes the USP 'overrated' is some minor things that make it dated, but can probably easily be addressed. Add an optic cut, update the sights, and address the trigger and it's right there with everything else (aside from the fact that it would still carry the H&K price tag, but one can only ask for so much).

The fact that it’s still being compared to guns 30+ years later means it’s not actually overrated. If you “need” an optic so badly, you can get that done on a USP.
With the possible exception of the P365, I think SIG pistols went down hill after the P220 series. I've carried a P220, a 229, and a 226 and they were all great. The 226/229 became our issue guns and I don't remember them ever having a problem other than one guy who put aftermarket grips that didn't fit and bound up his slide (and my P220 that I bought used years before we issued guns and shot A LOT that wound up needing a new barrel though I traded it for a USP). When SIG embraced the striker fired craze (I prefer hammers, call me old) it seems like their outstanding product just became at best mediocre.
Feel like the Thompson was pretty poorly represented given you judged it on a closed bolt jenky modern commercial reproduction. That being said you definitely made a lot of valid points in regards to the weight and ergonomics, I'd love to see a more detailed video on an actual Thompson if you can manage to get your hands on one! Very much like the content none the less!!!
As a sig p320 owner i dont disagree with it being number one but i havent experienced any malfunctions with mine personally. and also as a .460XVR owner youre 100% correct about big bore revolvers. i got mine just to have fun and im still working on not flinching every time i spend $5 pulling the trigger. training is absolutely a must-have to use it effectively. The Thompson… You are not entirely right or wrong on that one. Original 21, 27, 28, 28A1, M1 or M1A1 I never really heard of reliability issues. However the 1927A1 model that Auto Ordnance makes now yes they absolutely have reliability issues. I’ll fully admit I’ve only put about 300-400 rounds through mine. Got it brand new. So I might still be in the “break in” period. However I’ve only had 1 mag run through clean with no FTF. The more I take it out the more it’s smoothed out. However there’s only so much you can do when it jams every 4 or 5 rounds. Gets very tiring after 2-3 mags. Usually trade off for something else when shooting.
I'd put snub-nosed revolvers, in general, pretty high up on the list, too. So many folks think they're the be-all-end-all of concealed carry, especially in calibers like .357 Mag (which loses a LOT of its power out of a short barrel). But you get a really short sight radius, a really heavy, long trigger that a lot of folks will struggle with (especially female shooters to whom they get recommended all the time), and oftentimes only FIVE ROUNDS, with a slow and awkward reload that can only be made fast if you're Jerry Miculek. There are a bajillion 9mm semi-auto subcompact pistols nowadays that are just as easy to conceal as a snubby, often hold twice as many rounds, and also often cost significantly less (especially when compared to most S&W or Kimber revolvers).
My buddy is a pretty good shot with all firearms I’ve seen him shoot: ARs, striker-fired pistols, SA pistols, clay shooting, etc. He picked up a .38 revolver for like $700 to use as his new truck gun and we went shooting immediately after. That heavy DA pull had him shooting all over the damn place. Sure he will get better with practice but like you said 5 shots? Harder skill curve? I think he bumped his damn head.
Snub nose revolvers are good for one thing, a lightweight back up gun to a good primary gun. I carried one on my ankle during my law enforcement career and, while I could make solid hits out to 25 yards, I was under no illusions as to it's purpose. It was last ditch, short-range gun to save my life. Carrying it as your primary is just silly.

That said, I cringe when women show up to class with either a S&W DAO LadySmith Centennial - or a Glock 43X. Tiny grip, hard to grasp, short sight radius, hella recoil compared to larger models.

I’m so glad my blind buy of a P320 M17 was cancelled by the company I bought it from. It was during peak Covid and they could not get a hold of one for months so I cancelled it. With that same money I bought a CZ Shadow 2…best series of events ever lol.
I prefer my P320 over the CZ Shadow 2 and I perform better both on precision and competitive IPSC shooting with the P320. I didn't want a P320 and wanted to buy a Shadow 2, but it was unavailable at the time and the P320 was the only one I could get, so I ended up buying it thinking I would sell it later to get the CZ... 3000 rounds down the road and now I prefer the P320.
I like this video. As someone who goes at least once a week to the range, your remarks regarding big bore revolvers and pump action shotguns are acknowledged. I love my Taurus 66 and will get a 44 soon but as you said, I shoot those guns regularly. Same applies to my Maverick 88. The big advantage I drew out of mastering large calibers guns was that my trigger manipulation skills improved significantly for 9mm pistols since I started shooting revolvers. This video is very helpful and gives good advice in between what to look for when planning a gun purchase (great side effect I value a lot). Thanks for sharing 👍🤙
I love my Taurus 44. It's probably the single best dry fire training tool available. Yeah, I know there are gimmicks out there that are probably cheaper. But owning a second double action pistol 1: gives you another fun gun to use even if it's just at the range, and 2: a heavier trigger pull to exercise your finger and improve trigger control. I didn't buy the 44 for dry fire practice, or for concealed carry. I bought it for bears when I'm out in the woods. But I love that monstrosity to pieces.
You mention the Hi-Point, I currently have around 30 handguns and have had 50 at various times. My hipoint .45 ($149 at the time) is the only gun I've never had any issues with. A little over 100 rounds. No stovepipe, ftf, jam etc. Literally the only handgun that's been flawless. That's not to say anyone should carry one, or even buy one. It's butt ugly, it weighs around 63 pounds with loaded mag and shoots 5" groups at 10 yards. But in my experience, extremely reliable.
I had a neighbor run out and buy a .44 magnum revolver, right after 9/11. He showed it to me, and I said "uh, okay. Not sure how you plan to use that thing, but good on ya". So, him and I went out to a gravel pit so he could "break it in" and he fired all of about 3 shots and then he was done with it. About a year later I asked him if he still had that .44 and he said that he had gotten rid of it months ago.
Magnum cartridges highly depend on body and hand size. I have an 18.5_oz 7 shot 357 magnum from Smith & Wesson. It's a Scandium frame with a titanium cylinder. I can shoot it very accurately one handed, with full power loads. However, my palms are 11" in diameter, and I'm an ex collegiate wrestler and powerlifter. At 6' tall, and weighing 225_lb due to muscle, magnums aren't as difficult. Put the same revolver in the hands of a small woman, and she'll never want to shoot again. I still can't get that horrific video out of my mind. A man gave a woman a Smith & Wesson 500, and she shot herself in the head and died, after flinching from the recoil from the first shot.
AFAIK, the only real practical reason to have one is if you’re in remote areas camping/in the woods and in the middle of nowhere. I.e. bear defense, Sasquatch, dogman etc.
@@HomeStudioBasics I would agree. I keep a 10mm as my nightstand pistol. But, I very much doubt that a 10mm could stop a large grizzly. It'll stop a black bear. Luckily, I don't live in grizzly country.
Everything you said about big bore revolvers is why I learned to shoot handguns on DA/SA semi-autos and double action revolvers. I got comfortable with those platforms before I ever moved on to striker fired guns. That said, I like my revolvers at .357/.38, thank you very much. I don’t need anything bigger than that 😁
I agree with a 6 inch .44 Mag, I carry a Charter bulldog in .44 Spec. To revolvers as a whole, my wife (5'; 90 pounds) used my 2 inch cobra her first time and kept all 6 in the 10 ring at 25 yards.
I've had a CPL for over 20yrs, and standardized on .38 and 9mm years ago. It's all you need. Plus shot placement is everything. That being said I am interested in getting a CZ 82 or 83. The .32 ACP version holds the most I've ever seen. 15rnds, in a gun the size of a Makarov or PPK. Maybe a little wider though due to the double stack construction.
I qualify annually with a S&W working at a state prison... They're efficient and effective for sure. Interesting how the units still issue revolvers for hospital duties but issue out M&P's to transport (bus duty) officers. I train with both and I'm acceptionally accurate with both striker and hammer fired pistols.
I was in the Army for 25 years, and carried the 1911, and then the Berretta double action. But, in civilian life, I got a revolver for the no jams thingee. Again, as a civilian, there is little to no chance there will be a prolonged firefight, but there IS a chance of a no fire, or jam. That is why I carry the hammerless revolver. Just keep pulling the trigger.
Great video. Gotta agree that the Thompson is the coolest looking gun. I have a semi-auto M1A1 with the 10" barrel (took 15 months to get the tax stamp on that one). Yes---heavy as hell---and I had to get a longer handle for the charging bolt because the action is so stiff. Still, it's an item at the range, and fun to fire. I also have a M1928A1 (Vic Morrow) Thompson replica (non-firing) which I consider to be the most beautiful gun ever. Still...heavy as hell. You can understand why they went to the Grease Gun (M-3).
When it comes to the Thompson, it's only meant to be manufactured from an open bolt and as a machine gun. So it makes sense why the civilian version would jam. However, I do agree about the stock configuration
I absolutely loved the weapon as a kid. My dad broke it out every year and we never had jamming problems. The only problem was the ammo was outrageous even then.

Love my SPAS 12. Great gun to fire. Will admit it's hard to find parts for. Love my .44's as well. They're not overrated. They're just not for beginners. And yes a .44 Special is my concealed carry of choice. Works quite well for its purpose. I have 1 Glock. Reason I have a Glock? I don’t want 2. Merry Christmas.
Great video! I would say the only thing over rated about the USP is the hate it gets... its the most tested, most reliable handgun platform ever made. I have been running a USP platform pistol since 1999 and in over 45,000 rounds I've had 2 malfunctions. Two were from crazy wolf steel cased ammo (9mm had a primer fall out. In 45, it was a bad lot where the cases were rupturing. P.S. I think you missed the Taurus Judge... just saying.
The Judge was mentioned with the big bore revolvers... He only stated that with the cost of the HK and lack of (updated) features makes it overrated. He did state that it's extremely accurate and has a good track record. At the beginning of the show, he stated that this list is compiled of guns that aren't shitty guns, just overrated.

He's truly entitled to his views. Mad respect. I have a Glock 19 gen 5 (9mm). I drive a Toyota Corolla. My Glock is the same. It's boring. It's a workhorse. But it is reliable, simple. Especially as a lefty, even I can get good shot placement.
I actually used to build the Thompsons for the company that owns the Thompson/Auto Ordance brands, Kahr firearms group. I can concur, they tend to have plenty of issues even during the assembly process. Mostly has to do with feeding, but it's typically a result of the stick mags being so poorly manufactured by a third party company
Yeah but it’s a machine gun that has been redesigned to fire semi automatic and with a closed bolt. Add the extra parts to the mechanism and you get shit. I got rid of my semi PKM because it sucked.

I have to disagree, Criminals aren't looking at our hips.. they're focused on the cash register or just you in general. Just because us lawful carry citizens look for it, does not mean Criminals are. There is no cases of Open Carry Citizens being targeted, that is a total MYTH.. it does deter bad guys. Hence why Mass shooters choose GUN FREE ZONES. That said, I don't care how someone carries.. as long as they are carrying. Each method has its pros, cons, times and places. And depends on the city, town or wilderness as well. I tend to carry more openly but still conceal when I feel it is necessary.
As a man who absolutely loves my USP, I agree. I got it when I turned 21 since I could finally own a hand gun. I just wanted my favorite handgun from video games. Then when I started shooting other handguns I quickly realized that it’s tough, but there are other guns that feel better and run smoother.
Your wise observations on pump shotguns (I'm sure you're referring to the 12 gauge) are why I recommend the 20 gauge. It throws almost as much lead as the 12 with much less recoil.
When my boys were in school they were always bringing their girlfriends to shoot trap and skeet with us and our 12 gauges were beating them up so bad I went out and bought an 870 express youth model 20 gauge and it has become probably the most popular gun in our collection. Light, handy, easy to shoot, can fire magnum rounds if you want, I find myself carrying it around hiking all the time.

I'm in geezer territory now (75), but I was raised shooting a 12 ga. on pheasants and ducks, and I've shot a _yuge_ number of skeet and trap games, almost exclusively using my dad's 12 ga. shotguns (he started me out on 12 ga. guns when I was 8. Light skeet loads, but still...). A few years ago I got a 20 gauge for my wife. I tried it out, then started using it. Now it's my #1, go-to shotgun. If raw power is your priority, bypass the 12 gauge guns and get yourself a 10 gauge (or a 12 ga. that shoots 3½" shells, loaded with _eighteen_ 00 buckshot pellets-the same as standard 10 ga. 00 buckshot shells). But if you're the least bit practical, a 20 ga with #1 buckshot is more than enough if push comes to shove. (IMHO, but YMMV. That's what makes a market, no?) _Remember to keep your booger hook off the bang switch until you’re ready to fire._
I love my 870, but I have to admit when shoulder other brands, they just have much better ergonomics and are just much nicer to aim and shoot. Wouldn't be difficult for Remington to retool and make some design improvements. Good video.
Interesting that you honorable mentioned the G36. In Kosovo I took the German Army marksman test with the G36K. The reflex sights were hyper intuitive (for me anyway), extremely light (compared to my M4 A1), and was shockingly accurate for twitch movements (probably because of the weight). I didn't push any 300 - 500 yd targets, but rarely would I do the same with an M4 (300 yds is the farthest qualification target). I had zero malfunctions, but I heard (from Americans anyway) that issues appear in sub-freezing temperatures. Long story short that's probably the difference between the military and US civilian versions. Edit: corrected typos and added US (civilian version).
If it had a problem at sub freezing temperatures, no military would adopt it. Especially the ones that has at least a quarter of a year in below freezing.
@@john2g1In Europe you can buy a "real" civ G36 . The HK 243 and the only complaint I know: The trigger is OK. The "real" G36 only had problems with "defective" ammo...
The P90 in its original select fire, short barrel configuration along with an FN 5-7 to share ammo is absolutely a monster Personal Defense Weapon. You can keep it under a coat, deploy it in a hurry and it holds enough rounds to make a massacre.

I bought my first gun earlier this week, a 1911, and I absolutely love it. Then I stumbled across this video and I was a little bit worried it might be on the list. hah I'm well aware it might not be the most cutting-edge handgun around anymore, but boy do they shoot nice and look great.
Honestly it's a great starter pistol. It shoots 45 very well becuase of how well it balances out when loaded. My mom actually preferred shooting it over my more modern handguns and she isn't a gun person.
I think a 1911 should be everyone’s first pistol. Easy to control, great triggers, lighter recoil and relatively comfortable. My first pistol was a Glock 17 gen 3, terrible trigger, pretty decent recoil and I shoot it terribly. Got a 1911 and relearned how to shoot, went back to the Glock a while later and shot it sooo much better.
For one, I'm a fan of the 1911. BUT I would have expected it on the list. Their biggest advantage I have found with them is that they seem to get more reliable the more you use them and the less you spent on them LOL
Everything you mentioned about the pump shotgun can be overcome with training. The fact that your wife couldn't handle a 590 is a problem as they're one of the smoothest out there.
Its actually pretty interesting seeing how some had reliabiltiy issues with their 320. Its the only gun i havent had a single issue with. Just how things roll i guess.
I don't currently own a P320, but I have owned and fired several. They have been 100% reliable and accurate, nor have I heard anyone having consistent issues with them. I really don't know what would make them better performing, so I'm not sure where the over rated designation comes from. I'm not a big fan of striker fired guns, but they do work. The only striker fired gun I currently own is actually my carry gun. For the past few years it has been a P365. It's been a good, reliable, and accurate little 9mm. I put at least a mag through it every range trip, which is 3-4 times monthly. No issues with it.
@@TedintheShedI don't really shoot my 320 legion that often as I'm more of a rifle guy but every time I have and have let friends shoot it, she's been flawless and a joy to shoot. I guess there are always some lemons but everyone that I know that has a sig loves them.
Chris, you are reasonable and you ask for different opinions without having an issue with differing opinions. That's one of the great things about your channel. To borrow your most common line, "With that being said", lol - It wasn't fair to knock down the pump action shotgun because (8:17) "it's usually given to new shooters and people that just want a self defense gun because it is affordable". You seem to be too focused on new shooters when discussing pump action shotguns. I like the fact that you have your wife assist you in videos because it gives us her view and opinion that we can use for our own wives, girlfriends, etc.. But having her trying to rack a shotgun that's new to her, in the cold, with slippery gloves on isn't the average shotgun shooter. The claim is just a bit too focused on new shooters and smaller stature shooters that are new to shotguns and forgets about the huge number of people with shotguns that don't fit into that box. Yes, it has a lot of recoil but that shouldn't make it overrated. The recoil statement is accurate but the claim about new shooters is not able to be verified and even if it was, that doesn't take away from all the of the positive things that you said (7:45 - 8:05) it was, and agreed it was. BTW, not a FUDD, shotguns rule the world guy, although with every birthday I may be getting closer to that description, lol. Great job on the video and this is usually a fun topic for debate, as you already know far better than most.
It's overrated precisely because of the hype. Hop onto a forum and ask what to get for your first piece for home defense, and like a third of the replies will be a 870 or something similar, but it's simply not a great platform for a large amount of the population. For those that can use it, it's pretty great.
Wow! If I could have made the list myself, I think the only changes I would make is how high or low on the list they fell but I think the list is damn spot on. I think the desert Eagle should have been higher and the USP is the only one I would question but as you said, these are not necessarily “BAD” guns but overrated guns. Very well done. Bet you get some people upset with some of them but not me!
I agree w/your opinion of the DE! Over-rated and a solution without a problem to solve. The USP, while very serviceable is overrated and over-priced in the slot. (I find USPs seem to be made for a race of people 15% larger than average. There are many other options from Beretta, Sig, Glock, FN, Springfield in the same price category. HK is also notoriously high for magazines and parts.
The difference between Canadian and American gun laws surprise me sometimes. Here in Canada, we only have restrictions on shotgun barrel length if its a semi auto. You can buy a pump action with a 10" barrel with a regular non-restricted PAL.
Why, they are still over priced and are what they are. Nothing good, nothing bad, just playing off nostalgic ideas. Buy several 22lr rifles and pistols instead and have way more fun.

6:31 In the Thompson's defense converting an open bolt submachine gun to a semi-auto only carbine typically comes at the cost of reliability even ignoring the magazine reliability issues. I fully agree with everything you say about the gun though. ........I still want one anyways.
Though to be honest, converting anything from open bolt to closed is probably going to result in a myriad of issues. Also, I'm going to have to point out that he says if not for the 50-round drums that you're stuck with 20-round sticks, which is not true in the slightest since the 30-round stick mags were standard issue for American Thompsons.
Thing about the Thompson wasn't accuracy and ease of use . It was the knockdown power that was loved . Was plenty of cases where a 9mm and especially the 7.62 of the ppsh being FMJ would just go through a enemy soldier without slowing them in close combat . Resulting in the deat of the soldier firing the small caliber pistol round . The 45 ACP would knock someone flat in close combat . My father told me you didn't shoot a Thompson like regular rifles and so forth . You shot it sideways and let the recoil move it in the direction you wanted . So it was absolutely loved for jungle and urban combat .
My personal overrated gun was my PPK. I wanted to love that thing so bad but it was extremely ammo finicky and rewarded me with constant slide bites. I had a Sig P238 that was similarly unreliable with most ammo but at least didn't bleed me. Ironically my far and away cheapest, and now only, 380ACP pistol, the M&P Bodyguard, is totally reliable with everything I have ever put through it. I have a base P320 full size that has never had a malfunction with over 1,000 rounds through it. It is chunky and not my favorite but my son loves it so it stays. My older son shoots expert with the M17 in the army and likes the platform. My two Glocks are similarly reliable both in their native 40 SW and 357 Sig, and with the conversion barrels, ejectors etc. to run them in 9. I still like my M&Ps best.
I love the PPK within limitations and noticed the same thing, picky with ammo, and likes to bite my hand. As crude as it may sound, because I like the size, feel, caliber and look of the PPK, I bought a Bersa Thunder (yes) and it hasn't failed me once, eats ALL ammo I put in it, and the extended beaver tail fixed the biting issue. Also have a few magazine options to choose from. Even ended up getting the Plus model with 16 rounds without sacrificing much size. Got an old Russian Makarov pistol holster and it fits like a glove in it. 👍
I have yet to shoot a PPK that was completely reliable. My Dad had a West German-made PPKS that was reliable, and I have always wondered about the pre-1968 West German-made PPK's that were importable before the Gun Control Act of 1968. I used to have a Colt Model 1908 (which I rather regret selling) and I still have a Remington Model 51, both of which have always been 100% reliable, even with hollowpoints, despite both those old guns having been designed decades before hollowpoints debuted on the market. Meanwhile, people I've known with modern US-manufactured PPK's could never get them to run reliably with hollowpoints, and sometimes not even with ball ammo.
@@Hibernicus1968 I have a 1930s PPK, never failed to load and fire yet. I have small hands, but the Firstborn has big hands, and he gets slide bite. The most comforting block of metal I own.
