I bought a torque wrench specific to bikes. Well worth it to be sure I'm not over cranking bolts. Retorqued the disc bolts and it made a huge difference in brake feel. Nice vid, thanks guys!
Fishing line, split shot and a vacuum for internal routing. Shot on the end of the line, into the frame and use the vacume to suck it through. Then just connect the cable to the line and pull it through.
Harry Barber no major difference plus sized bikes get misplayed for having rear "suspension" as the tires as that is not true you have to get the pressure .5 accurate to not feel pinky of rocks and roots but to low and you have horrible rolling resistance and rim strikes even if you get the pressure right the "suspension" in the tires is undamped
You greased your disc brakes?!?!?! Don't ever put grease on pad/disc brake omg xD! If your disc are squeaking, it's because(possibility): you're brake pads are too used and you didn't adjusted them over time, meaning the disc and the pad are breaking on a bad angle / You're disc(s) are buckling / or they have a bad runout *Sorry if you sometime miss understand, it's not my main langue :P

That means you fully trust your mechanic and I met too much mechanics more interested in me paying than in repairing my stuffs (cars, bikes...). It's not a problem with mechanical dudes, it's generic issue with all technical workers (and I am a technical dude, working with computers).
I’m actually hopeless when it comes to bike maintenance. I had a mountain bike once I rode it all year round sun ,wind, rain & snow, my gears started jumping because my cassette was worn then one day it locked up & the chain came off. I put the chain back on & I started peddling again & thought 🤔 I’ll try another gear as soon as I changed gear the small cogs below the derailleur we’re ripped off the bike & were hanging on the ground. I now take my bike to a bike shop when ever I have any issues.
Haha so I have a bike it’s a 2005 and I have never done maintenance on this bike, replace the cassette once and the chain twice other then that nothing and it works great, thing is bullet proof. Been trying to kill it so I have an excuse to buy a new one but it won’t die

I only ride my cheap carerra Subway to work and back (Had three more expensive bikes stolen, so needs must). Most things in your videos I will never need, but I absolutely love watching them. Informative, concise, professional, and most importantly, friendly. Good work mate.
Invest in a good set (yes, set) of torque wrenches, and take care of them! Don't drop them, bang them about, or use them for anything other than the final tightening of a bolt to the right torque. Torque wrenches are precision, calibrated tools, not a plumber's wrench, so keep them that way. Recalibrate them every so often so they remain precise. This is especially true for anyone with carbon anything on their bike, as it's impossible to properly gauge the torque on a bolt or fastener by feel, regardless of what anyone says, or how long they've been a mechanic. You'd be amazed at how easy it is to over or under tighten a bolt, just going by feel alone. You can easily damage carbon (among other things) by over-torquing bolts, and in some cases, void warranties if damage occurs by doing so. The engineers gave you the torque specs, so use them.
I may take in a bike shop this video is spot on and pull of the information you would be surprised how many new technicians and I shop make these mistakes themselves
I remember when I was 17 and I just saved enough money to get myself my first nice (but budget) mtb. I went to show it off to my best friend and he cracked out the spray loob. Sprayed the chain, the joints, in the hubs and yes directly into the brakes.. the bike couldn't stop at all the end.
it kinda hurts that people have such nice bikes they spend 5-10 grand on but dont know how to tighten a bolt.. didnt anyone fiddle with shit on their bike as a kid? its like putting the triangle into the triangle hole in that baby toy everyone had.
I know right it’s so sad I don’t even know how to remove my wheels 😭. Nah kidding I can probably disassemble my whole bike and put It back together with no issues or maybe one!

Highly interested in seeing you building something that rides like a 5k bike for under a grand tho. I'd pay to see that since it will save me a lot of money anyways :D

Electric socks on suspension..Take front wheel off..cut hole where toes are....slide up lower fork leg and put battery in steerer tibe..Solves many problems associated with frozen air shocks..Can wrap rear and use velcro or unbolt and slide sock over shock...2. Crazy glue cable ends..A drop of glue in mouth of cable end and slide on cable..Reuseable and doesn't crush cable...3. Tube elastic band hack..Everyone has vid now..I pit elastic band on front brake handlegrip and when parking bike wrap it over brake lever so bike doesn't roll away4. Plug them holes..3/16 black cabinet screw plugs work great on 5mm giant pivot bolts..These little rubber accenters snap right in place..Other pivots use larger sizes as does axle holes and 5mm allen key holes and plugs that work on hollow cranks..Could even store stuff in cranks with caps on..Lastly gotta say that look great when the holes are capped and a bit of anti part theft....I use very carefully a utility blade to pry oo caps5. Iwrap inner tube on bike stand on each claw so it doesn't damage my seat tube.6.Colored bike parts..I use cheap model brush and waterbase paint to see if a color will work on bike..Ex..Paint stem green to match green decals..Paint screw heads to see if anodized screws bolts work..Sometimes color is too much and takes away from bike so wash it off if its not working or buy the part..7.Weight Weenie I have Giant Trance 2 2017 black n green and learning trials tricks on it..30 pounds seems to be key number whether a bike is valued or walmartish..So I wanted 2.6 NNics 780g a piece and sram 200mm centerline(best lookin rotor ever)and a decent seat.So I chopped weight from handlebars stem all ti bolts etc to accomidate the heavier parts..My bike 29.84 pounds dry..8. Disk Rotors and oil..Mtb disk rotors very fragile when it comes to oil contamination so at the grocery store they have rolled up bags for vegis..These are great and don't need to be tied..Wrap around rotor when workin on bike ..quick bleeding washing..waxing etc..handy little bags.9. For aluminum rims..Tubeless..Joints on inside rim I crazy glue or epoxy at seem..Seems tape always worked its way lose and sealent would leak into spoke chamber then ooze out of spoke holes while riding.10. Bike with shiney finish..Hi end Sports car waxes make bike look better than new.I use Meqiires High glooss and wow paint color becomes brillant..11.I replaced wheel bearings with Enduro Max..There fo pivots..No casing seperating bearing balls.. Dirt in Shock pump..Always keep presto adapter screwed into shock pump when not in use as dirt from your carryin bag or traildirt will get into nozzle and you'll end up pumpin the dirt into your air chamber..(very Bad13. Brake levers..left handed people or ex motor cross will find it easy to switch brakes left side rear brake and rightsode front brake...or I guess some countries have that setup initally.14.SLX,,,,,,, had a makeover in 2016..Brakes can slide in and out of the top without unbolting caliper..Caliper Maintenance..What I Do and it works great....Take out Brake pads fire them with small torch the givem a drink of alcohol....Unbolt caliper cover rotors with vegi bag..The further away caliper is from bike the better.......My brakes mineral oil..Stich a finger between caliper postons and squeeze lever slowly til they pop out..(pen top or a little more) Use a tooth brush dipped in mineral oil and clean side of pistons..Wipe with paper towel..Squirt mineral oil on poston push one at at a time back in til fully seated..Put finger in between pistons and slowly squeeze lever til they pop out againRepeat cleaning the oil squirt ..Using fingers top and bottom push piston in and lastly give them a drink of alcohol..I notced when put back together after squeezing lever for brake space between pad and rotor remained constant and piston recessed perfectly..Lubing and cleaning those little piston will prevent early brake failure..15..Permanent black marker fixes blemishes fast..Bolt ends scratches..you name it it'll cover it..Lastly if you can do a review on hidin gps trackers with no subscription fees..That would be great...A device that covers a 100 miles and uses google maps or similar to deterr knooty little opportunists..(Seth bike hacks word opportunist) hehThx Enjoy your Utubey showTim McDroid Merry Christmas
Interesting that you recommend lubricating the suspensions. There's a lot of confusion and debate whether it is better to lubricate or leave it clean. Some big manufacturers recommend a gentle wash and wiping it clean then turning the bike upside down for 20 mins or so letting the oil inside to soak those foam rings. That will help lubricate itself without needing to add anything else. Applying the wrong lubrication to the stanchions will attract dirt and debris which can potential scratch and damage them.
A good maintenance hack seems to be to buy car stuff as bike stuff is often the same thing with a huge price tag. Motorcycle fork oil instead of Fox / Rockshox (make sure it's the correct weight), lithium grease for cars is super cheap, as is brake cleaner. Sure there's a lot of stuff that IS bike specific, but just as much you can save a bunch on.
Be VERY VERY careful when using your foot to remove pedals or any bolts. I had a buddy who worked in a bike shop and was doing as shown in the video when his wrench snapped. He had a cut to the shin bone from the top of his foot nearly to his knee.
3:29 at a pinch, a long straight wide pitch screw, small enough to wind into the tube with out too much effort... Leave the head on, screw it in half the length of the thread, cut the head off (and any non threaded shaft) and screw the 2nd piece of tube on (it helps to hold the 1st tube at the end with pliers so you are holding the thread inside from turning. I suggest you start with the old tube so the pliers don't damage the new tube (although having an excess of new tube so it can be trimmed is a good idea). I suggest when undoing the finished run, again hold the old tube and unscrew from the new (as if you have trouble extracting the screw from the last section.. it doesn't matter as that is most likely to be bin fodder anyhooze) Its good to have the correct tools. Then again I have been known to make my own brake banjo rather than drive a whole 10 mins and buy a $10 one from the local bike shop. Better yet... go buy one from your local bike shop... They are more expensive than online crap.. but they have to hold stock so its there the instant you need it (not when they can ship it to a bulk drop point near you from China).... and then... when you really need a tyre etc NOW... they are still in business... and unlike "Chad", they will look at selling you something that actually fits, suits, and shouldn't break in 3 seconds... let alone in during the install.
I ride dirtbikes so I often find my self doing check ups on both bikes the same way. I found out my rear wheel had a little slop to it. Took it off removed the axel made sure to carefully account for all the ball bearings. Grease the axel grease all the ball bearings retighten the axel to the point where it was just too tight the backed it off a little and the wheel was tighter then when I got the bike new
I had a snapped axle and the grease inside of the rear hub was way too thin because of florida heat and all of the said grease poured onto my disc brakes, at the time I didn't understand that you don't want things that use friction to save you from crashing to have a lubricant applied. You can guess what happens next.
Thanks so much. I have another one. I've often washed my bike at the car washing water jet. Don't spray the water into any ball bearings. It will push out the lube out and you have to replace the components.
4:45 Now here's something I don't quite understand... Bolts are usually right hand thread (righty tighty)... usually a left hand thread is used when you have a bolt that has a predominantly left hand torque applied, so the torque tends to keep the bolt done up. Your pedals both undo to the rear (top backward) Normally there should be near 0 torque on the bolt (apart from a little sheer load friction on the bearings... BUT if the bearings wear out, get dry etc.. you can have some torque.. (A lot with rust). but here's the rub... think about your right hand (chain side) pedal... as you ride, your foot keeps it horizontal (effectively not rotating) while your crank IS rotating clockwise... The effect of this is that your right pedal predominantly rotates Anti-clockwise (top to the back). Soooooooo.... if your pedal is sticky/rusty/dry... it will provide an anti clockwise torque... to a bolt that undoes Anti-Clockwise... If your pedal is loose... and sticky... its designed to FALL OFF rather than tighten itself up.. Hilarity ensues! Can someone explain to me why they seem to have this backward... Imagine doing that with a drill head, or the nut on RC plane propellers etc.
My dad sent a drop on his old 2004 Kona coiler. His deore lx rear derailer got caught in the wheel and the derailer, spokes and chain were ruined. Luckily he had spare spokes but he had to get a new derailer and chain.
*When someone give you his Devinci because the bike is broken top to bottom... I repaired everything, those tips from this video are awesome, but there is one i can't follow. xD What was to repair.. -Both disc brake, buckling, runout, a bit curved. -Cable of brake and derailleur all to changes... -Front and rear derailleur broken. -Bottom Bracket, and everything attached to it, broken and falling apart. -Rayon, almost no tension on them... Welp, actually the only good thing left were the bike it self w/o anything on it xD
I meant to say insert allen key horizontally, with the handle pointing towards the back of your bike (when wheels side down) and apply force towards the ground :)
Mark Wilson right, and if you put the allen key "horizontally" to the 9 o clock position, and push it to the floor is the opposite direction to putting it horizontally to the 3 o clock position and pushing down, and the instructions are the opposite again if you stand on the other side of the bike....
@@danhenderson783 Yes but OP was obviously referring to actual WD-40, you know, the one that's been in production for decades and everybody knows about. We would assume that WD-40 branded chain lube actually does some lubricating, perhaps.
Yeah i use good anti-seize on a lot of bolts threads and axle shafts.. Anything that needs to come off and not rust. And a little goes a very long way. One little can for one lifetime

well I got to disagree on over torqueing some bolts like the stem clamp on the steerer tube side.. cant believe somebody hasn't though of a splined steerer tube... how many times I've turned a corner with my 29'er to snap into another turn and the bars spin, hurts
