Yeah they were very up front about it. One small point, the idea of having someone jack in by a port on the neck is older than Ghost in the Shell. It's kind of a mainstay of cyberpunk as a whole and was showing up even in tabletop rpgs in the late 80s.

The thing about this is that a lot of these concepts can't be directly tied to just 1 source. The misfit Naruto wanting to be "the best" can be traced back as far as Greek and Chinese mythology. People fall in love with inanimate objects a lot in Japanese folklore and tales, from which Chobits got its theme. And manipulating people's dreams to make them do something can be seen in the Bible! These are tropes. Tools used by writers for plot. Just because an anime happened to use it before a film has no bearing the fact that the trope existed long before the anime. Saying that the film stole from the anime makes tons of assumptions and is very closed-minded.

You deliberately picked the weakest comparison though. If you instead opted to discuss Paprika and Inception, the strongest and openly confirmed comparison by the director, then you're just being pedantic. Some of this list was bullshit, some of it was true. The overlying concept is also true, that there are some directors who borrow themes and concepts from alternative media without crediting accordingly. That's all.

Black Swan was also heavily influenced by Perfect Blue. Both films talk about two young girls losing grip of reality and experiencing hallucinations. Their both different, but there are countless scenes in Black Swan that are similar to Perfect Blue

So you're saying as long as a studio can copy a piece of work decades after the original, and do it with better technology, it's not plagiarizing? So a writer can copy Tolkien now, from characters to history to setting, but as long as he writes in decent pop culture language, changing names a little, he's not plagiarizing? Of course Disney plagiarized, it's one thing about paying homage, it's another to copy another studio's work and indecently claimed it's their original idea.
@danzer5214
@danzer5214 7 лет назад
They should give credit where its due. Notice the harsh intellectual property rights they enforce in the US. Yet the Film Industry gets away with copying ideas and not crediting them properly.
@arimihaltses8277

This meme is repeated every time The Lion King is brought up (and I did used to believe it myself) but doing some research I don't think anyone stole anything. Kimba aired on US TV in the 60's when many of the people involved in The Lion King would have seen it as kids. For sure there are influences that carried over, but the artists, writers, directors insist it was unintentional. As for the big name similarity, "Simba" actually means lion in Swahili, so its more a clever homage to its African roots than plagiarism. If they were going to steal, why make it so obvious?
@bodman1
@bodman1 7 лет назад
Ok, so I'm only on number 1 and I'm already confused. The Matrix did not "steal without getting caught" from Ghost in the Shell. Not only did the Wachowskis acknowledge that the film was heavily inspired by GitS, due to how similar some of the scenes would be they asked permission from it's creator before they started filming. There was also a triple DVD pack marketed as 'Anime that inspired The Matrix' that included GitS, Akira & Ninja Scroll. They made every effort to inform people of what inspired The Matrix because they wanted the medium to grow and be appreciated in the West.
@killjoy1887
@killjoy1887 7 лет назад
On a side note Cyberpunk and Shadowrun people have been plugging themselves into the Matrix since the mid 80s. Hell Reeves even did a cyberpunk movie in 1995 [Johnny Mnemonic]. I think the genre actually originated in the west. Regardless of where it is from they were not new ideas in 1995 anymore so than they were when The Matrix came out.
@LMayer-uh1sz
@LMayer-uh1sz 7 лет назад
Not only that, but the "plug in the back of the neck" has existed as a way of jacking in to cyberspace for a LONG time. It existed long before Ghost in the Shell was a gleam in someone's eye. It's been around since AT LEAST the 80's. It existed in the old rpg Cyberpunk, which came out in 1988.

So is Her and Chobits. It basically boils down to ''both are about lonely men who fall in love with machines, so obviously Her stole from Chobits'' despite the premise itself being far older than fucking Chobits. Even Blade Runner explored something similar to that premise to an extent.
@JRGomez81
@JRGomez81 7 лет назад
Also, the main character of Chobits wasn't lonely at all, Hideki Motosuwa was a jovial man who made friends easily, rather than being a lonely man who falls for a computer. At most he is a fish out of water, or a country bumpkin who doesn't differentiate between persocoms and people because he did not grow up with the distinction societal-ly drilled into his psyche at every turn. By the time he leaves the farm (literally) the person he is is too ingrained for this to change.

i didnt understand how the battle of the bands was like naruto wanting to be hokage, yes they both want to be at the top but tons of plots are like that, he could have replaced naruto with one piece as luffy wants to be pirate king, useing such a largely used plot simularity and connecting it to a single show is just stupid imo

Yeah, the thing is Scott Pilgram was doing it to win the heart of Ramona not the battle of bands. All Naruto wanted to be is a hokage and the best ninja. Believe it!! Tyger42 Theres a difference between taking ideas, and directly copying scenes, such as the bathtub scene in Requim. Inception may be inspired by Paprika, but it's also very different, especially the idea of Limbo, I haven't seen anything but small clips of it, but I'm pretty sure that's not in there.

Also, the hallway fight scene, Train on road scene, final scene, intro scene, the diner scene, the bathtub scene, and bassically everyting, there's a difference between having a similar plot, and taking ever scene, which is something Inception doesn't do.

Stolen refers to the directors or writers took the idea from anime and passed it off as there own. The majority of the movies on this list the directors said they were inspired by these works or they credited them. The others were just overreaching. Avatar is not a copy of princess momoke, it is a tale of people being invaded by other people and has been done before and many many times in the history of story telling. Scot Pilgram and naruto was just bogus beyond belief. Serial Experment Lain copied from Lawnmower Man which was also the inspiration behind Johny Depp film. This list is just bogus. A perfect example of Hollywood stealing from Japanese cinema would by The Magnificent 7 which was blatant copy of Samurai 7.

Rey Rei Ulises Serio There's a difference between Homage and Stealing. Pacific Rim pays Homage (as they bloody well said themselves) To old Kaiju and giant robot shows like Gundam, Gigantor, Godzilla and the like. Ghost in the Shell was inspiration for parts of the Matrix, again, it's an homage. Just look at their animated collection. Also, If you think Avatar was stealing from Princess Mononoke, then they stole from a great deal of other places too, Nausica And the Valley of the Wind, for another Ghibli film. Fern Gully, POCHAHONTAS. Avatar was such a blatant "Well this story has always been popular, lets make it prettier" that you can draw parallels between it and GREEN PEACE, for christ's sake. As for Requiem: Ya can't steal what you already own. That's not how that works. Anyway, just needed to rant for a moment *deep breath* I'm good.

The ghost in the shell ones also were pretty popular cyberpunk thropes. The green text, basically that is caused by the old monitors. The cathode ray tubes. They had green on black text, and the fading effect. The plugging in thing, also used in neuromancer in 1985, and artificial brain interfaces was a field that is being researched since the 70's at least, and used in roleplaying games like shadowrun since 1989. The matrix is just part of the cyberpunk genre, just like the matrix.

Scott Pilgrim was written by BRYAN LEE O'MALLEY, not DANIEL. Also, with the exception of the Perfect Blue scene, this list is lazy and inaccurate. Slightly similar concepts do not NECESSARILY mean that anything was stolen. There are tons of examples that exist where anime was stolen from, these aren't it. And to suggest a talented author like O'Malley stole from Naruto is just offensive. I'm assuming you did almost no research and read this on a forum somewhere. Which catch phrases are you even claiming were stolen? You can't make a claim like that and then not even say what they are. And how in the hell is winning the battle of the bands at all similar to becoming a ninja leader? You may as well say Pitch Perfect is based on Naruto by that logic. Or Glee. Hell, any movie or show where a person has a goal to accomplish must be based on Naruto. Also, as point of fact, Naruto itself borrowed heavily from anime that came before it so using it as an example as an originator of anything makes you seem woefully uninformed. Throw some credit to Dragonball or Yu Yu Hakusho or JoJo or Hunter X Hunter before you mention Naruto.

The green screen is from the old green screen computer monitors. It's not something the animator simply dreamed up. As for Chobits, this wasn't a story about a guy who is desperately lonely, but a cautionary tale about what can happen when we let technology take over our lives. The male leading character was neither lonely, depressed, nor introverted. Unlike the leading character of "Her". Hideki Motosuwa of Chobits is an outgoing collage student who finds an discarded android, and activates it, naming her Chi. Chi isn't like the other androids either, she's an AI who is later proven to be self aware.

I just saw "Kimi No Na Wa" (Your Name) yesterday and I seriously feel like Japanese anime films are extremely underrated/looked over. I can't stand anime shows because of the excessive budget cuts, fillers, flashbacks, lazy writing, one dimensional characters, incomplete stories and fan service. The films on the other hand are absolute masterpieces imo, especially when compared to the soulless done cg films of the West which are full of SJW propaganda.

Just, horrible comparisons. Scott Pilgrim is nothing like Naruto, it is a real stretch to say Scott, who does not really care about the battle of the bands, is similar to Naruto, or that the character model is based off him instead of a geeky kid. And Superman has had fight scenes like that, in comics, for longer than you have been alive probably, at least the 80s. Really do not see the similarities between Looper and Akira, aside from an element that attempts to make the viewer think? You guys are really just trying too hard.

A LOT of these things were simply coincidence... Similar thinking producing similar products. The Zach Snyder one about the Man Of Steel's fight scene stealing from an Anime? Um, no... There are fight scenes in the Animated DC Universe where they are similar. Superman Versus Shazam. Superman Versus Doomsday and Darkseid. Etc. A LOT of these things were not stolen. Also, if one guy bought the rights to an anime to use a scene in his movie, it is literally the furthest thing from being 'stolen.'

@andyhoov

So, Darren Aronofsky stole a scene from Perfect Blue by purchasing the rights to use the scene? If that's the case then I've stolen pretty much everything I own! Also, learn the difference between paying homage, taking inspiration from, and stealing. For example, every alien invasion story is not stealing from HG Welles' War of the Worlds, nor is every time travel story stealing from The Time Machine. You can take a core concept, like entering people's dreams or falling in love with an AI, and explore it in different ways.

Raptor 09 neon Genesis evangelion isn't a traditional mechanical anime, its a deconstructive anime with very deep philosophical meaning about life relationship loneliness and aspects of Christianity to it. Whereas Pacific rim is obviously a visual galore movie where you should just turn off your brain off to watch. Thus, no Pacific rim is definitely not based off of evangelion

I'd sooner compare Pacific Rim to any season of Gundam than Evangelion. I mean Evangelion was a masterpiece of an anime, even if it had some parts that I didn't really liked. While in Pacific Rim, there are some huge plotholes, and the best part about it was the awesome soundtrack. and the huge mechs smashing the face of those kaijus was sweet too, but mostly the soundtrack. As for Evangeion and the Christian subtext, I do seem to recall a scene where the protagonist jerks off to a girl who's in a goddamn hospital and is unconcious... I'd rather not bring up any possible religion related to a series like this, be it Christian, Jewish mithology, etc.

Man of Steels city destroying fight scene "OBVIOUSLY" comes from anime influence. Or maybe, you know, literally every Superman cartoon series and animated movie ever made? Also, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was fitted with prosthetics and make-up in Looper to make him look more like Bruce Willis, so that him being a younger version of Willis would be more believable. That he looks like an anime character is pure coincidence. And finally, "Scott Pilgrim uses some of the catch phrases from the Naruto Anime." Such as? A few examples would have been nice. Without them it sounds like you are bullshitting. You make it seem like every time something is even a little bit similar that it absolutely MUST have taken the idea from anime. I'm not saying that Hollywood film doesn't take inspiration from anime, but you are making a hell of a lot of unwarranted assumptions.
