One of the ways that many of us software developers learn is through conference talks. So what makes a great software talk or the best software keynote? These take many forms, and these days vast numbers of them are available on RU-vid.
In this episode, Dave Farley author of Continuous Delivery and Modern Software Engineering lists some of the talks that have influenced his thinking and describes what he learned from them. Dave describes talks from some of the best software speakers, from the best software conferences, as well as less well-known software engineering talks from less well-known people. He also describes ideas about what makes a great software developer talk and offers you some thoughts on getting started with public speaking at conferences.

I have been in this industry for a very long time - but I have never seen someone promote TDD in an approachable way like you have and I've been an adversary to testing (and vice versa) because I didn't understand why the code I am dealing with or writing is hard to test in first place. I have changed my entire engineering paradigm based on things I've learned on this channel and researched further, so I have, myself, become an advocate of pure functions and TDD and have been stumping interviewers every time we'd do online programming interview or pair programming. What I can say is, I am looked at as a saint for basically just understanding what TDD is (and isn't) about and it is probably the most powerful ad for this channel - I have told all my friends and colleagues to look into what you have to say because I can not only say but also show, that understanding ideas presented here leads to doing things better - faster. This shows that not only have you gotten better at talking (or writing) about things, you truly do have the power to influence people who are even (in some way) initially opposed to ideas you want to present.

I love "the collapse of civilization" by Jonathan Blow. It speaks about software and the need to evolve it in order to save it from devolving. About hardware that allows bad software to run and seem acceptable. About our compliance with lots of bugs are seeing daily

You're so right about live coding... You can be a brilliant speaker with a fabulous idea and "the demo gods" can turn the whole thing into a pile of poo! This looks interesting... you've missed out ALL of my "old favourites"... so I might find a few "new favourites" in this list. :) With reference to Bryan Liles... all the best talks have a swear word in the title. ;)

@ContinuousDelivery

RU-vid doesn't really work like that. You can subscribe to the channel, and hut the notification and bell symbol, but YT treats that as a preference and still doesn't inform you of every episode, but it will spot if you watch them a lot and mostly show you every one. We release new episodes every Wednesday at 7pm UK time, and periodically, last Sunday of each month, we plan to release longer "Engineering Room" episodes. You can see all the channel content, and subscribe, here: ru-vid.com
