I’m a mother of six adult children. You are spot on! I especially like how you’re teaching boundaries to children by your own example of consistency and commitment to peaceful and polite communication. The matter-of-fact and non-reactive way of dealing with food on the floor or childish tantrums is most beneficial. Children feel uncomfortable and insecure if their emotional outbursts can “cause” an adult to “lose it” too. At those times, a young person most needs a calm, centered and nonjudgmental response from the caregiver. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with others.

WOW Are you self taught? How did you learn all of this - books, classroom and experience or all three? I've been in ECE for over 30 years I've done everything including director of a preschool. I've interviewed and mentored many new teachers. You are fantastic!! My kids are grown but I want to have more just to hire you as a nanny LOL This family is so lucky to have you. You are a natural for sure. Everything you said was SPOT ON! I was good when I was young but your knowledge is so much better than mine when I started. I hope you stay in this field forever because ECE needs you!!

I’m planning on being a live-in nanny next year and I’ve been a babysitter for the past four-ish years and this info is great! I already do the countdown warning thing for anything that’s stopping the child from doing what they want and/or starting something they don’t want to do. I started doing this because my little brother is autistic and giving lots of warning has always helped him a lot and has prevented a lot of meltdowns. I figured it’d be helpful for other kids too, and so far it’s worked out well! Gets kids to not be on devices as much, cause I can be like “ok, you’ve been on the iPad a lot so far, how about we go play outside in ten minutes?” Then another five minute warning and they’re not as against stopping. Also, giving choices is good, because it gives them more control in the situation. Not just telling them we’re doing something and they don’t have a say, I ask them which of two things they’d rather do first and that’s helpful too. An example could be like “do you want to get off the iPad in ten minutes or fifteen?” They’ll likely choose the fifteen minute one, cause it benefits them more, but they’ll be less likely to fight with you about getting off

Responding to cries at different ages depends on how they've been responded to before. You can't assume they're having a fit that doesn't need attention just bc they're older.

Just discovered your video and i’m really starting to understand how to handle certain situations. I’m always open to criticism, see where i’m wrong and apologies where necessary. The child that i’m babysitting for who is 9 years old, he sometimes gives a hard time getting him to do what he’s suppose to do after school. I think I have to reinstall my boundaries by having a sit down conversation with him.

I've been watching a few videos but this helped me feel so much more confident & excited. I have one quick question though, would it be okay to work on homework/other things while a kid is taking a nap/resting? Thank you!
@NicoleGillianHopkins
@NicoleGillianHopkins 2 года назад
I would make sure everything you need to get done is done around the house and you can always ask if there’s anything else they would like you to do. And kinda just put it in the agreement or understanding if there is extra time that you can work on your homework. I’m sure they want you to be successful and get your stuff done as well

Hi:) I liked your video! I saw a job offer for two, two years old. I have only babysitted like five years olds is it much harder to take care of children at the age of two than five especially if there are two children instead of just one?
@NicoleGillianHopkins
@NicoleGillianHopkins 2 года назад
It really just depends on the kids and the family. I think five year olds are easier in some ways. They are more self entertained and use the bathroom and usually are safer while they eat. Two roads could be in the middle of potty training still a little bit wild while eating and need more a one on one support!

@NicoleGillianHopkins
@NicoleGillianHopkins 2 года назад
I don’t know of any unfortunately. My best advice would be to understand children is also just to understand yourself and whatever you need they probably need as well. If you’re thirsty, cold or need to go to the bathroom just always check in that they need to as well or give them those things. Just driving deep into whatever game they’re playing and make it interesting for yourself by asking them questions or making some thing you find interesting and just enjoy being a little kid again!

I could really use some help! I’m a new nanny for a three year old and I’m noticing some behavioral trends with him such as, when I say, “(name) do we jump on the couch?” He’ll respond with an angry face and say “no! You don’t talk!!” And I’m trying to undo a lot of things that he’s already been conditioned to that are causing this behavior... you mentioned in your last tip manners... where do I even start with teaching a sassy three year old manners?
@NicoleGillianHopkins
@NicoleGillianHopkins 3 года назад
Emily D'Antonio I would maybe try reverse psychology... like okay you can jump on the couch and the child will for a while then they will get over it. The child might just be testing you and if you show no emotion or concern they might stop. You can reword with a star chart for every time they listen they get to put a star on their chart and work towards something they like!

i’m a new baby sitter and i just started this job about a month ago. i’m 18 years old and i watch a 4 year old boy and a 7 year old girl. they give me a lot of problems with listening to me and they often times use the excuse when i tell them to do something, they’ll always say, “well mommy/daddy let me do it” (ex: things like sitting on the table, eating a bunch of candy not real food, running ahead of me when outside, not holding my hand crossing the street). the other issue i have is the little girl is always influencing the little boy into listening to what she says instead of me. i don’t want to resort to having a talk with the parents because i feel like it makes me look like i can’t handle the job. i’m really struggling i threaten them with telling their parents or putting them in time out but nothing gets through to them and it’s such a struggle. i really want to grow a bond with them but i feel like they think im mean because the only thing i can resort too 99% of the time is having to be stern with them because they never listen and take advantage that their parents aren’t around. please if you have any advice, it would be so helpful. great video as well and it did help!!!!
@NicoleGillianHopkins
@NicoleGillianHopkins 2 года назад
I usually give the kids two options of what their choices are. Sometimes we have to sit through some screaming but you have to stick to your guns so they know you’re serious. Sometimes a behavior chart chart could work so they can earn something they really want sometimes I will help them pick stuff out on Google or like bath bombs really work for my kiddos and to maybe you just have a conversation with the parents of how you guys can work together to have the same communication for when you’re there and we are not there and to have the parents tell their kids to respect you and to have the kids know you’re fully in charge and your job is to keep them safe

Everyone is human and parents understand if not everything goes perfectly to plan. Be honest. Don’t ever leave the child when they’re eating and give them one bite at a time if you’re worried. Kids do tell their parents everything that they think is interesting. Something happens like you drop spaghetti sauce all over the floor. Be very chill about it and just clean it up. And the child might not say anything about it or just tell the parents how you handled it. Kids want to be heard, get on their level, make a friendship, hopefully timeouts don’t have to happen often. Look for what the child is interested in and give them responsibilities and make sure that they know you are proud of them!

Although I do everything for them, they shout at me and ordering me around and complain to their mom by crying that I want mommy to do this and that for me, not me. Kids will say what they can to get what they want and to get a reaction. Just follow through and stay calm. I try not to take anything personal so I don’t get effected. And just know they’re kids and they don’t have all the words they need yet and they’re figuring out life. Tell them I don’t like that Don’t help them when they shout

I just kinda take it. There is something going on inside them or they might not be happy about some thing. Maybe they are growing and they’re uncomfortable or maybe getting new teeth and they’re uncomfortable not finding the right words they need. Sometimes kids can just be moody and say whatever they want. As if we said whatever I wanted we would have more consequences are you just learn how you don’t want to be treated. I try to sit down and have conversations of why you don’t like me and how we can grow from this or what can I do to make it better. Show them that you hear them. I got told this morning that I was mean nobody likes me. Something along those lines and I asked why and there was no answer. With kids sometimes you just have to be tough and show them that it doesn’t even bother you. Why don’t you think the child likes you?
