Thank you for including the tip about the reflecting pools. I've visited there twice and even though I'm not a New Yorker, I still got very emotional there. I can only imagine what family members must feel when they come to visit and remember that horrible day. To everyone: Have some respect and take your selfies somewhere else.

We visited last Christmas and like you were shocked at the insensitivity of some tourists. We asked a couple of police officers if they found the behavior offensive and they said yes, but to a lot of visitors it’s just an attraction to tick off the list. They also mentioned that measures were put in place because people were carving their initials in the bronze list of victims surround. It befuddles.
@rych7852

Agreed! Saw the same selfie-wankers at the pools. There are signs outside by the pools to remind visitors that it's an area of remembrance and quiet reflection. Not just that, but inside the museum, there's an area with various artefacts from the day. The rule is no photography. The staff remind you, and there are signs up. Yet I saw 1 guy still (trying to be stealthy) taking photos on his phone! Time and a place! @John agreed on the Brooklyn Bridge cycle lane. Lots of people just standing in it and then wondering why locals were shouting at them!

Thank you making being respectful at 9/11 memorial #1. When I went a couple years ago (on 9/11) there were folks posing and trying to get the best selfie. They even posed with memorial flowers. It was so gross and disrespectful. Love the under board tip and will keep that in mind!
@SophieLovesSunsets

Great video Jon! I think it's really great that you spoke out about the 9/11 memorial. I feel not many people address this issue. About two years ago my husband confronted a group of tourists at the memorial who were not only taking disrespectful selfies there, but also posing with posters showing the planes hitting the towers, it's sickening and despicable behaviour with no respect for humanity. We live not too far away from the memorial so we walk there a lot and we very often see people weeping at the reflecting pools remembering their loved ones who died that day and they deserve respect ❤️

I hate to say it but maybe they need to start limiting admission to New Yorkers only, or at least start charging admission to ppl not from NYC in order to discourage tourists from treating it like a tourist attraction. Sad to say but a lot of ppl these days are fully lacking in respect and appreciation

Some good stuff there, Jon. Locating the whereabouts of the conductor on the tube is a nifty tip I shall use. Also, what you said about the 911 memorial is spot on. I went down there shortly after it opened (I think we had to book tickets for it?) and even back then, a small number of people were clowning around like they were at Luna Park. Unfortunately it seems to get worse as the years go by.

Thanks for the subway cardboard tip!!! If you allow me, I would add one tip myself that I learn on my second trip: “don’t look like a tourist” if you don’t, you will avoid so much people trying to sell you tickets, tours, the pictures in Times Square, the “budists” asking for money and many people trying to scam tourists... the difference between my first and second trip was simple, I left the backpack at the hotel and when i needed directions I tried to look for them while still in some building so all those people don’t spot me...

These are the cheapest ways from all NYC airports to Manhattan. Skip the $7.75 Airtrain and take bus/subway. JFK: First get a $33 7 days unlimited metrocard (it pays off after 12 rides) at a Hudson News stand and then head to terminal 5 and take Q10 bus to Lefferts Blvd subway station. Then transfer to a train to anywhere in the city. LGA: unlimited metrocard is also valid on M60 bus to Manhattan, just make sure to get a free ticket with your metrocard from the machine at the stop before boarding the bus. EWR: take bus 62 to Newark Penn Station for $1.60, then transfer to the PATH train to 33rd st in Manhattan for $2.75.

Number 1 is so true and I'm glad you said this!! I've been to NYC 5 times since 2016 and it's the one comment I have made every single time! 9/11 memorial MUST be treated with utmost respect and I think selfie sticks and any show of disrespect should be banned in this area. People who do this should be given a warning to please stop and show respect for what happened here.

As a long time New Yorker, if anybody wants to see a soccer game, I want to give you some tips: 1. New York City Football Club and New York Red Bulls are New York City's official professional teams that play their games at Yankee Stadium (Bronx), and Harrison, New Jersey respectively. Tickets for these games can be as cheap as $15 dollars depending on the opponents. These teams compete in the MLS (USA and Canada's Top-Flight Soccer League). 2: Opponents: If you are seeing another MLS team play, it is very cheap and affordable to see them play. If the opponents is a Latin American team, tickets can still be fairly reasonable. The only time tickets will be expensive to see a soccer game in the NYC area is if European teams, like Real Madrid and Liverpool are playing here, and tickets can start as high as $100.

Another museum tip: I didn’t know there was a Holocaust Museum down near battery park. There’s a special exhibit (extended to Aug 2020) with items brought over for viewing from the camps. It’s not an easy visit to do, just like the 9/11 museum. There’s a boxcar out front which is just haunting to stand and look at. Suddenly you are transported back to 1940, you can almost hear voices coming from within. As difficult as it is to visit, it is an opportunity to experience and bear witness to what humans can do to others. Even as an atheist, I fell it was a duty to remember and feel some the horror others experienced so that we don’t do things like this again to each other. Ever. I recommend not going alone. It’s emotionally intense and being with others you care about makes it that much more poignant.

So happy you included the bit about the 9/11 memorial. I’ve encountered these types of scenarios often, where people are taking selfies with big smiles on their faces at memorials. I encountered this when I went to Japan as well, at the Hiroshima peace museum. It’s meant to be a place for you to reflect not a place for you take selfies at. I hope people learn that not every single place you visit needs a photo.

One thing I didn't take into account when I took my dad to the city last month for the first time... Downtown is an area of town in other places and not usually based on what direction its in. He was so confused on the subway because he thought downtown was in reference to the epicenter of the city not literally down town, until I explained that was how navigation works in the city. And you're so right about the reflecting pools that's something that really bothered me and my mom on the last trip. we were tearing up at the memories of that day and meanwhile people were hamming it up. Sad, so sad. Makes everyone who comes to visit as a tourist look bad.

Omg ur comments about the 911 memorial are spot on. I’ve been there and I’ve seen those very issues you spoke about. I thought it was in horrible taste. On a side note I also saw a group of kids obviously on a field trip who we totally respectful and were just doing their assignments throughout the museum. I was blown away by how nice and respectful the kids were. Maybe the teachers gave them the riot act before they went in. Also I never understood the store in the museum. Why would anyone want a puzzle or 9/11 coasters. It seems to me like buying something from a cemetery. But I guess if it helps pay to keep the museum nice I could see that side too.

Hi Jon, first of all I wanna thank you once again for your great videos and tips! They really made my second visit to NYC even more special! Your down-to-earth presentation style is great and way more pleasant compared to some other NYC-vloggers I came across here. I totally agree on tip #9 and would add that if you are into basketball and are visiting New York in October, it's easy to get tickets for preseason games. They are cheaper compared to regular season prices and you can still see some high profile NBA stars. I went to MSG in 2018 and to the Barclays Center a few days ago and while both arenas are great, the BC is indeed a lot cheaper and has more local vibe to it.

Wasn't ready for the reflecting pools. Didn't expect to have such an emotional rush as we walked in there. Was totally ok like 10 seconds prior I just remembered looking at one name for so long and wondering how many lives that one lady would have affected and them looking up and just seeing the names lists that never seemed to end. I prayed and moved through trying so hard not to lose it. Seeing people caught up in their own staged candid Instagram selfies made me sad. Sad for them they lacked empathy, kindness and respect, instead locked into the goal of a little hit of dopamine for getting an Instagram like. I love taking pictures in NY but a camera was not on my mind there

Excellent tips! Thank you! 😑I can't believe it even has to be said about not being stupid & disrespectful at the memorial...they need to have signs that remind them to be respectful, no loud talking, taking selfies etc. I know they wouldn't necessarily help but it'd be worth a shot.😔

All I learned from my high school trip was keep moving and don't talk unless you really need to 🤣 it was a huge culture shock from Texas.

Thank you so much for stating your last suggestion. It's a difficult subject and I've seen the same thing all too many times...people treating this somber place like a tourist attraction or Instagram photo op. 3000 people died on those grounds, just everyday people like you and me going to work. For those of you who haven't been there, I highly suggest going through the museum once. Just Just warning, one of the rooms at the end really personalizes what happened that day. Anyone who read those letters or listened to those voicemails will never treat those grounds like a tourist attraction.

John ,your comments on the memorial pods are spot on ! ! ! My partner & I visited at the end of January this year during the very cold spell. When we walked around both the pods I removed my own hat as a mark of respect & courtesy . The behaviour of some people i witnessed was nothing short of disgraceful. Keep up the great work please & we will be looking for you when we return in Feb 2020.

Ex-New Yorker here, don't bring your car, cause of the traffic, AND there's like no gas stations, and if you find one, the prices are insane. Edit: Spelling

I'm from Liverpool England, I've been to NYC a few times and been to the 9/11 memorial twice, it always amazes me how disrespectful people are there, with their selfie taking and smiling whilst doing it, this is the world we live in though! sad but true

Lots of great tips in this video. Here’s another one for you; If I’m driving and my final destination is somewhere in Manhattan, I park in Jersey City at the Newport Center mall. Cost anywhere between $10 and $15 depending on how long I’m staying. Then it’s just a short path train ride into the city.

4:43-This tip also applies to a lot of cities here in (North) America as well, _including_ the city of Toronto where I reside and I'm typing this from. Also, NYC has/is going to introduce congestion pricing, which will eat into your money even more (or just as much as) parking fees.
